Celtics reporter Noa Dalzell recaps the Celtics 123-98 win over the Bulls, beginning with Jayson Tatum’s massive performance. Tatum became the first player in Celtics history to record 43 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists. Plus, Noa discusses World Basketball Day and the only concern she has about this team so far (spoiler alert: it’s Sam Hauser’s lingering back injury).

00:00What's up, everyone? This is Noah DelZell, and I'm here joining live from Chicago, sitting
00:26here actually right in the same postgame share where we heard from Joe Mizzoula and Christoph
00:30Sporzingis after the Celtics beat the Bulls in what was really a phenomenal bounce-back win.
00:37And I think this was, no matter how you want to cut it, this was the Jason Tatum game.
00:41And so I said it in our postgame show, but I think this was an all-time Jason Tatum performance.
00:46And obviously, it's a December regular season game in Chicago. It's not going to be the one
00:50that you remember when you think about his legacy and all the big moments that he's had.
00:54But he put together a stat line that's actually never been achieved before in Celtics history.
01:0043 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists. And that's actually never been done before. So
01:05in a very decorated history, but there are some franchises where you can break
01:09franchise records all the time, and the Celtics is not one of those. And we know that. And so
01:14to me, besides for just the stat line that he put together, what you saw from him in this game is
01:20that he didn't force anything. He let everything come to him. He didn't actually start very hot
01:24either. It was actually more of a Jalen Brown start. He was the leading scorer through the
01:27first quarter, but came at a halftime on a mission, 18 points in that third quarter on
01:32seven of eight shooting, five rebounds, four assists, and turned what was somewhat of a
01:36close game to an absolute blowout. And so he's going to have these games from time to time that
01:41I think remind people that this is what he's capable of. This is what he can do. Obviously,
01:47the big thing for him tonight that he had that he doesn't always have was the three-point shot.
01:51You know, he had nine of 15 from three, and we've seen plenty of games where that's not the case,
01:55but ultimately when he can shoot like that, he might be the best player in the world.
01:59And, you know, obviously that's not always how he can shoot, but that's the only thing that's
02:03really holding him back. And I've said that before, I've gotten in trouble for saying it,
02:07but I think really, you know, there are very few players in this league that are better than him
02:11at this point. And sometimes we take it for granted. And I asked Joe Mazula about it post
02:15game. I said, you know, what kind of stood out to you? What do you think is replicable? And he
02:20said, it was kind of fascinating to watch and thought that was an interesting word choice.
02:23So I asked Mazula, you know, what do you mean by fascinating? And he said, you know, I think people
02:28take him for granted quite a bit. And I'll actually read the exact quote because I thought
02:32it was a good one by Mazula. He's been doing great things for such a long time. I still think he gets
02:36taken for granted because he's done it for a long time and because it comes relatively easy for him
02:40and we're in Boston. So that's the expectation. And it is the expectation. And I think that's why,
02:46you know, sometimes he's not as celebrated in his, maybe he would be in a smaller media market or
02:50with a place that doesn't have so many legends and greats. But ultimately I think, you know,
02:56he reminds us from time to time when he's capable of and Porzingis talked about a post game is that
03:00it's not always these kinds of performances that you can't ignore. A lot of times it's more quiet
03:04performances, but he does all the little things to win. And he really just prioritizes winning.
03:09He does not prioritize going for 40 because we've seen a lot of times he's one rebound short of a
03:13triple double or one assist short, and he doesn't try to go back. And Mazula said today, you know,
03:18he didn't lobby to come back into the game to get that final assist. He didn't ask for it.
03:22He wasn't going for it at all. And I actually wanted to put him in. And sometimes I'm not
03:26aware of the fact that he's one stat short of a triple double. And I want to give him an
03:30opportunity to reward him for all the sacrifices and all the things that the guys do for one
03:34another. So really, I'm just sitting here in Chicago. It's 1120 on Saturday night. And I'm
03:39thinking to myself, this is, you know, this was one of those games where you're sitting there in
03:43person, you're realizing you're watching an all-time great. And that's the way that I felt
03:47watching it. And again, not the most consequential significant game, but sometimes you just watch
03:53someone dominate every aspect of the game. And you realize like, it almost feels like someone's
03:57kind of figured out the game, they've unlocked it. And this was one of those games where both
04:01the passing, the shooting, the drives on Hill. He had that one monster dunk. That was awesome.
04:06He actually had a couple of dunks in this game. I felt like he was almost making a point of it,
04:09but kind of just had a perfect game and did it all. And in turn, the Celtics win 123 98
04:15to bounce back from Thursday's loss. That game feels very far away now. And, you know,
04:20you're looking at a Celtics team. That's again on pace to be one of the best teams in the league.
04:25I have not had any concern about this team all year, because even though they've had a couple
04:30of losses and that's just the nature of things, they always seem to bounce back. And last season,
04:34they never lost more than two games in a row this season. They haven't lost more than one. And I
04:39think that they're on pace to have a similar kind of level of sustained success as they did last
04:43year. They're 22 and six right now. And you're just seeing good habits. You're seeing trust in
04:48one another and you're seeing their great players performing at a high level and Tatum led the way
04:53there. But I think that Jalen helped really set the tone early on. So I don't want to overlook his
04:58performance, even though this wasn't the Jalen Brown night, this was really more of the Tatum
05:02game, but he still puts it, put up 19 points and eight assists. And those are the kind of playmaking
05:08bleeps that I think people would have loved to see from him earlier in his career. And he's
05:12willingly making that pass. He had eight, eight assists today, just two turnovers. And again,
05:17he didn't have the shot. He was over five from downtown, but he was driving downhill and making
05:21really good things happen. And I think that really helped set the tone for this team. So
05:25your superstars showed out tonight, Tatum, Brown, Porzingis had a really solid game. He had 22
05:30points, seven rebounds. He shot at eight of 15 from the field. And I asked him post-game,
05:35do you feel like you're back? Do you feel like you're a hundred percent? He said last week that
05:39he didn't feel that way. And he said, no, no, and you'll, you know, not quite. There's still the
05:44stamina piece. I'm not quite there. You'll know that when I'm there and I'll tell you when I'm
05:48there. And so I think that we're talking right now about a Celtics team that is really healthy.
05:53And I want to acknowledge that because there's a lot of teams in this league that are
05:57way, have, have just been dealt such a difficult injury card. We're talking about Orlando where,
06:02you know, the Celtics are headed tomorrow. They're going to face the Bull, the Magic,
06:05excuse me, on Monday night. And that's a team that has just been ravaged by injuries.
06:10And so Celtics have been healthy. They've had it. They've had it pretty good. Obviously Porzingis
06:16missed the first, you know, period of the season. Sam Hauser has been in and out of the lineup.
06:20There's been some lingering things, Jalen's hip, Tatum's knee, Derek's foot, but nothing's major.
06:26So I want to acknowledge that first and foremost. But I think that what we're maybe forgetting is
06:30that this is still not peak Christophe Porzingis. We're going to see him get to another level.
06:36And so I'm looking forward to that. I think that he would tell us if he felt like he was a hundred
06:40percent guys, we'll say that. And he's not at that point right now. And that's a good thing
06:44because they're already quite dominant. And I think he's looked really good. I honestly feel
06:48like he hasn't been substantially worse than last season, maybe not quite as dominant, but
06:52I was pretty impressed by how quickly he was able to ease kind of back into the lineup. So
06:58overall takeaways from this game is that you're just talking that you're, you're realizing you're
07:02witnessing greatness. That's how I felt. I don't always feel that way. I think being a journalist
07:06in this field, you're thinking about, you know, what's my story going to be? What are the quotes,
07:10you know, the stats, making sure you're not missing any key plays. And once in a while,
07:13it's almost like, even as a viewer, you're in a flow state where you're just kind of watching and
07:17you're like, wow, this is, this is really awesome to watch. And, and this was one of those nights.
07:22And that's my biggest feeling sitting here in Chicago. We spoke with him today at shoot around.
07:28He said that his knee was feeling a lot better. He missed a couple of games for tendonitis. And
07:32he said that that's something that him and his trainer, Nick saying they were working together
07:36on and that he's improving. And that I think it was somewhat of the result of seven games in nine
07:42nights or whatever ended up being so really just a great bounce back for him. And if this is the
07:47beginning of a stretch where he's going to put together these hips performances, that's going to
07:51go a really long way towards his MVP candidacy, towards the steam trying to fight claw back for
07:58the number one seed, which somehow I think the calves are holding on in, in pretty remarkable
08:02fashion that they're still in that number one seat. I think there are 21 and four, if I'm not
08:06mistaken. And so 20, sorry, 25 and four, that's, that's pretty an incredible win, right there.
08:13They've won 86% of their games so far. So I think they're going to need a great Jason Tatum stretch
08:18here to try to make up that two game difference, a two and a half game difference between those
08:23two teams. Not really concerned about anybody catching up for the two seed New York right now
08:28is in third place. They're four games behind Boston. But I think you want to get home court
08:33for the entire playoffs if you can. And right now the Cleveland Cavaliers stand in your way.
08:37So that's kind of the only thing there. But yeah, I really post game was all about Tatum. It was all
08:43about just kind of acknowledging his greatness and how sometimes that gets overlooked. And I
08:48think that the stat sheet doesn't always capture his impact. And we talk a lot about NBA ratings,
08:52and I can talk a little bit about that here, though, I'm mostly done with that conversation.
08:56But one of the things that happens with when people aren't watching games and when they're
09:00watching highlights and, you know, statute watching and all that is that they're missing
09:04out on the little things. They're missing out on the attention that he attracts on the court,
09:08the, you know, the hockey assist, the screen assist. And so sometimes the statue doesn't
09:13capture it tonight. It did. And that was what was fun to watch.

10:17dollar lineup. Prizepix run your game. So one of the things that stood out to me from this game
10:24is that this season the Celtics have been the only team that have six players that average
10:28at least 16.5 points. And that's the five players that have averaged that are Jason Tatum,
10:37Jalen Brown, Christoph Porzingis, Derek White, and Peyton Pritchard. Sorry, five players. They're
10:41the only team that have done that. And I think that's really fun to watch. And I wrote an article
10:46about how they're unselfish and how their selflessness has been what's standing out to
10:49opposing coaches. It's what stood out to Joe Mizzoula and it's what makes them really hard
10:53to game plan against and really hard to guard. That being said, I think sometimes for fans they
10:58want to see their favorite players just go off. And I don't personally really understand why that
11:03matters to people, but I think that we live in a world where there's fans of the Celtics, but
11:07there's also individual fans of Tatum and Brown and you want to see your favorite player succeed.
11:12And so this is one of those games where if you look at the shot attempts, Jalen Brown attempted
11:1620 shots, Jason Tatum 24, Porzingis 15, Derek White 12, and outside of that nobody attempted
11:23more than seven shots. And that's kind of unusual for Boston. And especially for Tatum to take 24,
11:27that's unusual. And so this was a top heavy kind of scoring affair. And I want to acknowledge
11:33the fact that though it's fun to see that, and I thoroughly enjoyed this Jason Tatum performance,
11:38a lot of times you're seeing him score 25 or even Jalen score 15. And that's because
11:44Pritchard went off or Drew Holiday. And in this game, Drew just took five shots and Pritchard
11:49just took seven. And that's despite particularly 30, 32 minutes. So my point is, is that sometimes
11:56people are disappointed that they're not dominating the game more. And I don't think
11:59that there's a right answer. I think it's all about kind of what the defense is giving them
12:02and what the game is calling for. And in this game, it called for the superstars to dominate.
12:07And I think there's going to be a games where Pritchard is going to be the guy that's left open
12:11and he's going to capitalize on that or Sam Houser is going to come in. And you might look at this
12:16and not see this type of production, but I don't think it reflects on Jalen and Jason's impact on
12:21the game or dominance of the game. So I want to highlight that because obviously I spent most of
12:25the beginning of this podcast kind of talking about what we saw tonight from Tatum. But ultimately,
12:29I think even in games where this is not, it doesn't stand out as much, his impact never
12:34really wavers. It's very unusual that it wavers. And I think that once in a while you see performance
12:38where he doesn't seem like he's quite there. And I think he had one or two of those with the knee
12:42in that stretch where they played five games and seven nights, but ultimately he's very consistent
12:48in the type of impact that he has on both ends. Something else that we talked about here,
12:53and I'm going to zoom out a little just because part of me being in Chicago is I want to give
12:57you guys an idea of just what it's like to cover the team on the road. I'm going to be at almost
13:02every road game for the next few months. And that was a priority of mine because I think that as
13:06much as you can cover the team from Boston, they're on the road half the time. And so making
13:11it a point this season, my second season to be on the road as much as I can be. And this isn't
13:15going to be my first year traveling this much. And so basically what it looks like is today
13:22we had a shoot around availability. And when you go to shoot around today, it was an optional
13:26shoot around. So players don't have to attend. And that means that no player is guaranteed to
13:31be there. We spoke to Peyton Pritchard and Jason Tatum. And if you want to catch those, if you're
13:38a crazy Celtics fan who wants to know literally everything that was said, and I respect that,
13:42you can catch those full videos on CLNS media. And you can also, I usually post clips on my
13:48Twitter, DoaDalzel. So we go to shoot around. We can request certain players to hear from.
13:54And I think we requested those two as a media bee. There were only three Celtics reporters here
13:58on the road, myself, Abby Chin, the Sideline reporter, and Gary Washburn, who's one of the
14:04Boston Globes columnist. So it was a small beat here, not a national TV game or anything like
14:10that. But that being said, we spoke to those two players. I'm working on a couple of stories. It
14:15was an opportunity to kind of get questions for bigger picture stories where there's less media
14:19and you're not sitting at a podium. And then you have a couple of hours in between because the
14:24Bulls also have shoot around in Chicago. The Celtics were actually pushed back. I got out of
14:28here at like 1.30. I got out of United Center at 1.30 PM. And then I was back here at like 4.30.
14:35And so it's just funny that the turnaround is pretty quick on game days, especially when you
14:39have a late shoot around. And then you come back here and I'll watch the guys warm up. I'll watch
14:43Jordan Walsh and Jaden Springer and all those guys work with the player development coaches.
14:48And then once they kind of get through that warmup, then you have the starters come out.
14:51And that's closer to when the game actually begins. Derek Whiten and Przingis and Pritchard
14:57is usually the last guy out there on the floor. He seems to like having the latest slot and that's
15:02kind of what works for his rhythm. But there are so many Celtics fans here in Chicago. It's not
15:06one of the craziest cities I've been to because obviously Chicago does have like their own fan
15:10base, as you might expect. But still, there was quite a massive conglomerate here. And
15:16they were kind of crowding Tatum and Horford and some of the other guys as they were finishing
15:20their postgame availabilities and everything just kind of walking off the floor. But also pregame
15:26as guys were warming up, they were watching all those. They were watching the warmups and
15:30taking photos and getting autographs and everything. And the Celtics stars are really
15:34good about signing things and taking time for fans. I noticed opposing team stars, I would say,
15:39are on average less committed to doing that. So it does stand out. It's one of the cool things
15:44about covering this team is that the stars, I think, recognize that this is a dream come true
15:49for them. And one of the things that we talked about today is that it's World Basketball Day
15:53and Tatum and Pritchard both reflected on that at Shootaround. Abby Chin asked them about it. And
15:59they both said, you know, this game is just as you might imagine, this game is they far
16:02exceeded their expectations, far exceeded their wildest dreams, given them everything.
16:07I want to acknowledge on World Basketball Day how much this sport has meant to me.
16:10I grew up playing basketball. My dad played professional basketball overseas, but
16:14I wasn't somebody that was like naturally good at sports or into sports. But I remember the
16:19first time that I picked up a ball and I made a layup. And I think I was shooting underhand at
16:24the time because I was so weak and I wasn't even that young. I was like maybe 10 or 11.
16:28But I remember getting just addicted to this concept that you could actually, you know,
16:33as much as the rim looks so small, like you could actually learn to figure out how to
16:38consistently make shots. I thought that was the coolest thing in the world. And I was like
16:4210 or 11, maybe even 11 or 12. I was in middle school, so I got a late start.
16:48But I remember thinking this was the greatest thing ever, and it became my obsession. And I
16:51wasn't that good, but I worked hard to get a lot better. And I played in high school, and then I
16:56played club at Northeastern, which was, I say it's kind of like a D3 minus, maybe a little worse than
17:02D3. But we were pretty good, honestly. We were better than like a high school varsity team.
17:06But the sport, I thought that if my relationship with it was going to end. And I was, one of the
17:11hardest things for me, honestly, graduating high school was thinking I wasn't going to be on a
17:14basketball team again. And then got to experience it, not only at Northeastern,
17:17but I experienced it for six years, because I did my master's there as well. And they're actually
17:22the league that we played in, NCBVA. You actually have six years of eligibility. So I was that 24
17:28year old playing against 18 year olds, and I enjoyed every minute of it. So as a player,
17:35this sport has given me my best friends. I'm here in Chicago with two of my best friends that
17:40played basketball with the Northeastern. And in high school, my best friends were from the team.
17:44So maybe it hasn't brought me as far as it did Tatum and Pritchard. But when I woke up today,
17:50and I saw that it was World Basketball Day, I was like, I'm super grateful for that. And I think a
17:54lot of you, whether as players, or as fans, or as spectators, or whatever it is, I think the sport,
17:59if you're listening to this, probably the sport has had some impact on your life. And for me,
18:03I'm so grateful that it's continuing to impact my life, and that I continue to be in position to
18:09celebrate the sport, and to witness greatness, and to be able to literally watch and talk about
18:15basketball for my job, and write about the sport, and ask the greatest players in the world about
18:19their experiences playing it. So yeah, not to get too sappy here, but just wanted to give a
18:24shout out to World Basketball Day, and thank all of you for listening, and for tuning in,
18:29whether it's to our postgame show on CLNS, or to this podcast, New God Boston,
18:34or it's to my written content at SB Nation or Celtics blog. It has just been, it's been a
18:39privilege of a lifetime to be able to continue to talk about the sport, and to be around it,
18:43and to be literally, I'm sitting at a, you know, United Center right now, sitting in the postgame
18:47press conference, thinking like, it's pretty cool that I get to do this, and I'm very grateful.
18:52There's nothing I love more than going to watch Celtics games, NBA games, and just going to events
18:56in general, and I always use GameTime for all of my ticketing needs. GameTime has a new feature

20:09So I'm going to try to do these post-game podcasts after every single game. So far,
20:13I was doing more kind of live shows, and I know that there are a lot of post-game podcasts out
20:18there, and we do a post-game show. So I'm just going to give my quick thoughts, and for those
20:23of you that want more content, you can tune in, whether on Spotify, Apple, on YouTube, and just
20:30hear my thoughts on this game. And if there's specific things that you want to hear about,
20:33questions you want asked, things you want me to explore, I'm always happy to do so.
20:38I can attest that I have asked questions that fans have messaged me on Twitter asking me to ask.
20:42If I think they make sense and I think there's more questions, I will be happy to do so.
20:46But yeah, my intention is going to be to kind of recap the games and what stood out. And obviously,
20:50I think in this game, the Celtics did play a lot more physical than they did on Thursday,
20:54and that was a concerted effort. They said actually post-game, Porzingis and Jovo said
20:58that they weren't trying to go into the paint more. It certainly looked that way as an observer
21:03that there was a concerted effort to go downhill, to find KP in the pose for Jalen to attack,
21:08whether they didn't want to say it or they actually didn't make a concerted effort and
21:11those were just the reads, I don't know. But it was fun to watch, and I think it opened up
21:16other things for other people. And I'm looking here at the box score, and they still shot just
21:2115 of 45 from three. And if you take out Tatum, they actually shot six of 30 from three. So it's
21:28pretty impressive to win by 25 against a pretty solid team, despite still really, they haven't
21:34found a rhythm offensively to the level that we know they can. And if you look at their average
21:38three-point shooting last year, they led the league in three-point percentage for most of the
21:41year. This season, they're right in the middle of the pack. So I think that's going to change.
21:45I think that water is going to find this level. I think the guys like Jalen Brown and Drew Holliday
21:49are going to shoot better than they have been. The one maybe negative thing, I don't want to end on
21:54a negative thing, but Sam Houser misses two consecutive games here with lower back spasms.
21:58He was at shootaround, he was on that early bus that arrived here, which was an optional
22:02shootaround, so I'm sure he did some things. When media was available, he wasn't doing anything
22:06that I could see. But Houser's injury seems to be somewhat lingering slash chronic, like he
22:13missed some time earlier this year. He's missing some time now. He has set on record that it's
22:19something that he started dealing with over the summer. So again, I'm not sure if it's something
22:24that's really, really cause for concern or if it's just they're playing it safe with him right now
22:27because it's December and there's no need to force things. But certainly, I think we don't have a
22:32backup. We're not aware right now of a backup wing that has the capabilities that Houser has.
22:38And there's very few in the league that can do his job as well as he does. He's one of the best
22:41three-point shooters in the world, which is kind of crazy to think about, but I really do think he
22:45is. And tonight we didn't see Jordan Walsh or Jaden Springer in real minutes. I mean, they played
22:51the last few minutes of the game, but those two guys are not in the rotation right now. Jaden got
22:54his opportunity on Thursday. Jordan got some opportunities earlier in the year. Drew Peterson,
22:59not with the team. JD Davison, Drew Peterson, Baylor Shireman, and Anton Watson have all been
23:05with Maine in the G Leagues. It's actually the G League showcase in Florida right now. So they've
23:10all been over there. I don't know if Drew would have gotten an opportunity if he had been with
23:13Boston, but honestly, if they wanted him in Boston so bad, he'd probably be here. So it seems like
23:18there's still an outstanding question of who gets those backup wing minutes. And if there's one guy
23:22or if there's going to be multiple guys, depending on the matchup that get those remains to be seen.
23:27But from my standpoint, if there is a concern right now about this team, it's the fact that
23:30we're not quite sure of the severity of Houser's situation. We're not sure if it's something that
23:34we should be concerned about, if it's something that could spill into the playoffs even. I don't
23:39want to go think that far ahead, but when something's been going on for five, six months,
23:43which is, it seems like that's when it started, he said, over the summer and not for any particular
23:47injury or reason, you have to be a little concerned. So that's my one, I guess, negative
23:52thought here. And we haven't heard anything substantive. When I've asked Houser about it
23:56in the past, he said, it's fine. It's not something that I don't think he wants to go
24:00into. Joe doesn't ever like going into injuries, which I understand. But we see that he's stretching
24:05it out, that he has like a hot pack on his back and that it's something that he's kind of working
24:09through. And he actually was in a pretty good rhythm. He had a couple of good shooting games
24:11right before he missed the last two games here. These two games were Chicago. So we'll see. He
24:17wasn't, he was questionable for today. So he could have played, you know, he wasn't, it wasn't like
24:20he wasn't even in the running to play. So clearly he kind of came up short here, but maybe he'll
24:25play on Monday for Orlando. We'll be back with more coverage on Monday, post game show, live
24:31on CLNS media, and then you got Boston for additional thoughts. I also try to go live at
