Roubaix has had to accept two economic blows: firstly, the decline of the textile industry and the associated mechanical engineering for looms, and secondly, the end of coal mining. As in other regions of Western Europe, beginning in the Ruhr area, continuing through the Saarland and Luxembourg, and extending into Belgium and France, a transformation of the economic foundations is taking place. Unfortunately, some of it is short-lived, while other changes are here to stay. This also includes many faculties at the universities in Roubaix and Lille, some of which are also linked to the old textile know-how.

00:00Unlike a few years ago, Roubaix welcomes us in beautiful sunshine, with lots of culture
00:12and interesting corners, even beyond the recommendable window shopping.
00:29In addition to the recommended window shopping, we focused on three cultural highlights this
00:33time.
00:43One is in an old factory building and is called La Condition Publique.
00:52The contemporary art and current social issues really caught us.
01:00The next is the manufacture of Roubaix, an old textile factory that today presents this
01:05theme and gives an insight into textile production back to the Middle Ages.
01:27The third highlight is La Piscine, which is a very artistic approach to the integration
01:31of culture and society.
01:33This old swimming pool did not remain a pool.
01:35It is the heart of the development of the historic center of Roubaix.
01:39A museum.
01:40The sheer amount of world-class exhibits alone, gathered under the powerful windows on the
01:44front sides, is always worth a visit.
