00:00And regarding the location of Vulcan Canlaon and the following earthquakes that were recorded in the sea in Ilocosun,
00:06we will talk to VPOC's Director, Dr. Teresito Bacolcol.
00:10Good afternoon to you.
00:13Yes, ma'am. Good afternoon to you as well.
00:16Yes. We would like to know how you are monitoring Vulcan Canlaon.
00:22Okay. So for the past 24 hours,
00:25we were able to record 25 volcanic earthquakes
00:32and between December 23, 12 a.m. to December 24, 12 a.m. earlier,
00:40we were able to record 25 volcanic earthquakes.
00:43And yesterday, we were able to record 2,200 times per day of sulfur dioxide.
00:48This is lower than what we recorded on December 22, which is 7,198 times per day.
00:55Vulcan Canlaon is still at the alert level, meaning there is a high level of unrest.
01:00And we expect that there is a possible that there will be a hazard of eruption within the next two weeks.
01:10Oh, okay. So within the next two weeks, we can expect a stronger eruption
01:18and we can raise the alert level of Vulcan Canlaon?
01:25The possibility is always there within the next few weeks.
01:28We don't know if it will be within the next two weeks or within the next three weeks.
01:33Our definition is within the next few weeks.
01:36The next few weeks.
01:37And the possibility is always there.
01:39So we have to closely watch Vulcan Canlaon. We assess this on a day-to-day basis.
01:45We look at the parameters.
01:47If there is an uptrend, then we may raise it to alert level 4.
01:52And if there is a downtrend, then of course we have to lower it to alert level 2.
01:58I see. Okay.
01:59And regarding the upcoming earthquakes that will be recorded in the offshore of Ilocos Sur,
02:06what do you see happening in the next few days?
02:10We know that the earthquakes will not be predicted.
02:12But what is the implication of this?
02:16Okay. So if we look at the sequence of earthquakes in the offshore of Ilocos Sur,
02:22the number of earthquakes from December 19, where we recorded magnitude 5,
02:28on that day, there were 70 earthquakes.
02:31The following days, the number of earthquakes decreased.
02:37So on December 20 to 21, it was 14.
02:40On December 21 to 22, it was 10.
02:43And on December 22 to 23, it was only 10.
02:46And between 23 to 24, 4 a.m. earlier, it was only two.
02:53So hopefully, this will dissipate.
02:56But of course, there is always a possibility that there could be a bigger earthquake which may produce a tsunami.
03:05So if the earthquake is shallow and the magnitude is high,
03:10then it's always a possibility that there could be a tsunami.
03:14Not only in Ilocos Sur, but around the other trenches as well.
03:20So we have six trenches that are capable of generating tsunamis.
03:25Okay. We were told in the recent news that if there is a new earthquake,
03:32there could be a tsunami and the waves could rise within three feet.
03:37What is the level that you can see?
03:42The maximum height that a tsunami can generate
03:47would be at least 10 meters.
03:5410 meters?
03:55That's the maximum height that a tsunami can generate.
03:58All right. I hope it doesn't happen.
04:00Thank you very much.
04:02And advance Merry Christmas to all of you.
04:05Thank you very much. Merry Christmas to you as well.
