1 January - national forecast presented by the Marco Petagna
Transcript
00:00Hello, here's your latest weather update from the Met Office. I'm Marco Britannia.
00:03During the course of the afternoon, we'll see some wet and windy weather across the
00:06south and south-east of the UK. In fact, a wind warning is in force here until three
00:10o'clock this afternoon. Wind and rain gradually started to clear away to the south-east. Across
00:14the central slice, we'll see some brighter conditions, but also some wintry showers,
00:18some snow, mainly on the hills here, whereas towards the north, much cold air digging down
00:21from the north. So for Scotland and Northern Ireland, a mixture of sunshine and wintry
00:24showers, some snow, especially across parts of Scotland here, and locally down to fairly
00:29low levels as well. Feeling cold in the north and north-west, temperatures here no better
00:32than three or four degrees in places. At this stage, we hold onto mild air towards the south
00:36and south-east, but that colder air will also start to push down from the north and north-west,
00:40reaching all parts as we go into the overnight period. So the last of the wind and rain clears
00:45away to the south-east through the evening. The showers across the central slice will
00:48also start to ease overnight. So overnight, showers become mainly confined to areas exposed
00:53to the north to north-westerly flow, so northern parts of Scotland there, Northern Ireland,
00:57a few running down through the Irish Sea, and also a few down at North Sea coast as
01:00well. Inland areas though, mostly fine, plenty of clear weather, but wherever you are, it's
01:05only very cold. Towns and city temperatures below freezing, and I think in some rural
01:09parts of Scotland, we could be down to minus seven or minus eight degrees by Thursday morning,
01:13and icy conditions too across many northern parts, so start the day on Thursday. So as
01:18for Thursday then, the ice and the snow will gradually start to become more confined again
01:23towards the north and north-west into the morning, but the showers then feeding down
01:26from the north to north-west as we go through the day, mainly into Scotland, Northern Ireland,
01:29again through Irish Sea areas, down the North Sea coast at times as well. Whereas across
01:34inland parts, after that cold, frosty, locally icy start, plenty of sunshine, but it won't
01:38do too much for the temperatures, no better than six or seven degrees as we go into the
01:42afternoon. Six or seven down towards the south-west is into the low forties in Fahrenheit. Add
01:46on the effect of that north to north-westerly wind, and wherever you are, feeling much colder,
01:50in fact across the north and north-east of the UK here, temperatures feeling more like
01:54minus five to minus eight degrees, so you certainly need to wrap up warm if you're heading
01:57out and about tomorrow. As for the evening, well the showers again will tend to become
02:01more focused towards coastal areas, exposed to the north to north-westerly feed there,
02:06so inland areas turning mostly fine, but very cold again, a widespread, quite harsh frost
02:10developing as we go into Friday morning. That's pretty much it for me, but of course you can
