Patriots make Mike Vrabel their next head coach. Thoughts? Did they make the right decision?
Transcript
00:00I haven't been this excited since they announced Outer Banks season number three.
00:06Dreams do come true and I got my guy as the new head coach of the New England Patriots.
00:13Big announcement yesterday, press conference today, Mike Vrabel will bring all of his
00:20alphaness and all of his leader of men qualities into this franchise and will turn things around
00:28and I am assuming that we will carry that press conference live today here on WEEI and on the
00:35Odyssey app, Curtis. I mean barring big Red Sox news, we'll have that at noon. So the only thing
00:41that is alarming me are these random reports that somehow in through all of this, Elliot Wolfe
00:51is retaining some sort of personnel control, which is just, I don't know if that's the
00:59crafts trying to do him a solid on the way out or if that's actually what's going on or Mike Vrabel
01:06said, all right, the guy was in the interview and he was in the room with me. And if you want to
01:12keep him around, I don't know. I know Mike Vrabel wants to bring his own guy in to at least assist
01:18with that. And he is currently with the New York football giants, but I just find if they keep him
01:25around in some capacity, just make sure that he doesn't have the final say in decisions that are
01:30made, especially when it comes to the draft. Like it's okay if Mike Vrabel wants to keep him around,
01:35I trust Mike Vrabel. And if he wants to bring in his own guy to make those final decisions,
01:39that's fine. Keep Elliot Wolfe around, keep him in house or whatever. I think that it,
01:43that Mike took this job knowing full and well that I will have a huge and massive voice in there
01:53and Elliot Wolfe, like you said, Courtney will be somebody that'll help with scouting and those type
01:58of things. But it's ultimately, at the end of the day, it's going to be Mike Vrabel who's going to
02:02be the guy that's waving the big stick. And are you happy with the pick? I'm excited about it.
02:08My thing now is who does Mike Vrabel hire as offensive coordinator?
02:13Yeah. And it seems like, but again, I don't know if this is just being burped into the ether or
02:18not, but it seems like Josh McDaniels may have the, the inside lead on that job. I don't know
02:24how everybody feels about bringing Josh McDaniels back. I mean, he did do a good job. He got Mack
02:30Jones to the, and that team to the, to the playoffs. I mean, I don't know. I don't. Yeah.
02:36I don't care.
02:37What this weekend was, was the Patriots finally getting back to something that resembles an
02:43organization where you have a guy in Mike Vrabel that has experience. He knows the market. He
02:50knows the media. He knows the crafts. He knows the team. He knows the NFL. He knows how to win
02:54without a quarterback. He'll now have a quarterback. I don't know if there'll be
02:58successful, but right now I would say the Patriots are the second best organization in the AFC East.
03:04Yeah. I, I, okay. I like it. I mean, he was, when you look at the dysfunction
03:11that has gone on here for a while he's the guy to come in and get rid of that,
03:18like get rid of all the nonsense and to get guys to, to fall in line and guys to
03:25follow the rules and guys to be at least when it comes to the, the locker room and to,
03:33you know, I don't think you have young wide receivers who are whining about how many times
03:39they get the football or telling you that they have the greatest hands in the NFL when Mike
03:45Vrabel is the head coach of your football team. Oh, hell no. Cause he's going to call him out.
03:50Mike's the type of guy that would be like, yeah, we got receivers complaining about how great their
03:55hands are, but we see them in the games. They can't catch it. Like Mike's that type of guy.
04:00We went 360. We got rid of Bill and we kind of came back to, I want Teddy had said this yesterday
04:06and I think Teddy spot on, uh, Teddy Brewski said this on, what is that?
04:11Yeah. NFL countdown. He said Vrabel is more like Parcells than he is like Belichick.
04:18And I would 100% agree with that because I was with Parcells and that's the difference.
04:23I guess Vrabel is more like, what's the difference between Parcells and Belichick?
04:28Cause Parcells is a, he's not afraid to call people out, talk trash to them in the media,
04:36out front. He's not afraid to do that. Where Bill that's not really Bill's MO.
04:42Uh, Parcells will say what's on his mind. If he feels like we, we, when we play, uh, they said
04:48we have Parcells basically saying they want you to cook the food. At least they'll let you shop
04:53for the groceries. That's the type of person Vrabel is. He's not going to hold his tongue
04:57for nobody where Bill was a little bit more, keep everything in house.
05:02And this quote, you'll see it. I'm sure circulated more. It's in Gasper's column today.
05:06Mike Vrabel is as well suited for coaching as any player I have ever coached Bill Belichick in 2011.
05:15And you know, I listen, this could totally blow up. You know, I was obviously a little
05:21too aroused after one week of Gerard Mayo. So God knows I can overreact, but I, I just love
05:29that Robert Kraft admitted the mistake move forward. You know, I was thinking about this,
05:33Greg. So let's say Bill Belichick got fired a year early. They didn't expect it to happen.
05:39And Robert Kraft had promised Gerard Mayo the job. Okay. Let's go back a year contractually
05:45promised him the job, right? Would it have been more, uh, mischievous, more under,
05:51under board, more pathetic, whatever, whatever term, more of disloyal act by Robert Kraft
05:58to never let him get the opportunity. Or did Robert Kraft do what he did and keep his word
06:04while you get a year of Mayo, hoping it would work out, fearing it may not.
06:09So you know what I'm saying? Like, would it have been a bad, would it have been a worse
06:11look for the organization? If they said, you know what? I know you, I know I told you this
06:15Gerard, but you're not getting the job or what they did. Yeah. I'm assuming that they would
06:20have had to, and you know how they react to this. They would have had to pay Gerard Mayo.
06:24Although maybe Gerard Mayo would have hung around under Mike Vrabel. So you're saying
06:29Mike, Mike Vrabel was available a year ago. Why, if he was your guy, why don't you just go get him
06:36and, and not deal with all the Gerard Mayo stuff?
06:41No, no. I'm just saying that like, if, if Robert Kraft, everybody's mad at craft nationally about
06:45how he treated Mayo and that he didn't give him an opportunity and all these things. I'm just
06:50wondering what would have been better. Cause clearly we see that Gerard Mayo is likely not
06:54going to be the next Vince Lombardi. So if he had hired Vrabel a year ago and told Mayo, he can be
07:00the DC, but he's not getting the job. Would that have been worse than firing him after a year?
07:04He wouldn't have stayed though, because he already had interest for interviews. That's why,
07:08that's why craft jumped on him. So he would have left and then craft would have been better to go
07:12that route than what they ended up doing. Well, craft should adjust the biggest thing with him.
07:17And you can kind of see it is that I, I don't, I don't want to really use the word, maybe no
07:24loyalty, but I get what craft's doing. It's his team, but there really is no loyalty when it
07:29comes to what he decided to do and how he wanted to do it. It's really no loyalty anywhere when it
07:36comes to business and to work, I guess that, I guess you're right about that. But when you stop
07:42promising people one thing, and then you start doing another thing, I know there's no loyalty
07:48when it comes to work and job, but that's kind of a bad, if you'd like, you could ask Mrs. Mayo,
07:54if she feels like there was any loyalty when it came to this. I was, I'm intrigued by the
08:03Instagram messages of Chantel Mayo on Friday afternoon, and which she offered, I think,
08:10probably one of the better verbal threats in the history of social media threats, which was that
08:17false stories need to stop before the true ones are beginning to be told. So I don't know what,
08:26I don't know what they hold when it comes to evidence and to what went on and what the true
08:32stories are. But I give Mayo a lot of credit because if those stories were coming out about
08:37me being on the plane, playing cards and you know, all this other stuff, I'm coming out there,
08:41guns are blazing. I'm telling my story. I mean, I, I think you sign a piece of paper that says,
08:46Hey, we'll give you all your money that you're owed and you can't say anything for X amount of
08:52time or whatever, but you better hope that in there it says your wife can't either because
08:56if it doesn't, I'm going and telling everybody. Well, the other part of that though, is doesn't
09:00the organization have some side of that too? In other words, why couldn't the, if you're saying
09:04Gerard Mayo be quiet and here's your money, the organization should have a gag order about
09:09smearing your name, right? Yeah, that's true, Curtis. Yeah. And that's what they did. They
09:13smeared his name because do you think based on the way they made Mayo look, do you think that
09:22he really gets another opportunity? I don't know that he, I don't, I think it would be a while.
09:29I think he ends up, he can end up coaching somewhere. I mean, he's got a lot of money
09:33coming, right? It's got the money issue, but the coaching element of it. Yeah. I mean, I think he
09:38probably will. I think he would end up on somebody's staff somewhere at some point. I don't
09:42know. I don't know. I think he's going to have to go to college. Maybe he's done with it. Maybe
09:45he wants to go back to business. I mean, I don't, maybe he wants to go back to the corporate world.
09:49I don't know. I just love this. I hope she continues. Like give me all of the Mrs. Mayo
09:5651 content. I hope that she does not go into the night quietly. Yeah. I want to hear her side of
10:02it. Yeah. Uh, this is DJ from Hyannis. Hello, DJ. What's happening, Greg? What's up?
10:11Good morning. Hey, your Salvador's on the rise. Yes. I'm very excited. Very, very excited.
10:22The theoretical sourdough is on the rise. The actual sourdough is not doing so well.
10:29The starter is taking longer. Good God. But yeah, I'm very excited.
10:35DJ, he's the guy I wanted. Hopefully he's the guy that you wanted as well.
10:40All right. I do a good job with that one. Curtis nailed it. I can't wait for Vrabel to hear about
10:44your sourdoughing. Well, Mike Vrabel will be on this show every Monday to win. What's your
10:51relationship like with him? Chummy? It's chummy. I like that. I think it's chummy. It was honestly
10:57dysregulatingly close.
