00:00Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail insists that police officers cannot randomly stop

00:12He said today that enforcement officials need to have a clear reason to conduct checks on
00:18mobile phones, such as information suggesting an individual is involved in criminal activities.
00:25He also urged the public to lodge a report if the police check their phones without a
00:30valid reason.
00:32On Monday, Inspector General of Police Razaruddin Hussein claimed that police can go through
00:37a person's mobile phone if they suspect a crime has been committed.
00:42Razaruddin said police officers with the rank of Inspector or higher have the authority
00:48to check a person's handphone under the Criminal Procedure Code and the Communications and
00:53Multimedia Act 1998.
00:56Yesterday, the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia urged the government to clarify
01:01Razaruddin's statement, describing it as troubling.
01:05In response, Saifuddin said he will ask Razaruddin to discuss the matter with Suhakam.
