29 January - National weather forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Hello, very good day to you. There's actually a decent amount of fine, sunny weather on
00:04offer for many of us, not all of us as we go through today. Towards the south, there
00:09is a feature that's tracking, well, to the south of us. It's actually a feature that's
00:13been named Storm Ivo by the Portuguese Met Service. That's because it's bringing greater
00:18impacts to parts of France, Spain and Portugal. But for us, it is going to bring some heavy
00:22rain but confined mainly to southern most counties. That being said, we could see some
00:27high totals, 25, 30 millimetres perhaps, over the far south of Devon and some heavy
00:32rain spreading across southern parts further east as well. Also need to watch out for some
00:36strong winds in the southwest but not enough to cause too many issues. Elsewhere, and like
00:41I said, a lot of fine weather on offer. A bit more cloud across central southern parts
00:46but the further north you go, greater chance you have of seeing some blue skies. Although
00:50across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland in particular, there will be some showers
00:54coming down on this north-northwesterly wind and some of those showers will be falling
00:58as sleet or snow above maybe 200 to 300 metres, so not particularly high ground. Temperatures
01:03are going to be around average for the time of year in the sunshine, not feeling too bad
01:07I guess, but towards the south where we have that rain and under that cloud, it is going
01:12to feel fairly chilly but that's not surprising, it is January. Later on, we are going to see
01:17more wet weather then across the far south but that rain does clear away as we go overnight
01:21and into Thursday. Otherwise, plenty more showers piling in across parts of Scotland,
01:26Northern Ireland, also a few showers feeding into perhaps north-west England but also northern
01:30and western parts of Wales. These could still be a little bit wintry, some sleet or snow,
01:35mainly over Scotland, but even some higher ground further south could see a little bit
01:39of sleet and snow perhaps. Otherwise, and we need to be aware that temperatures are
01:43going to drop where we get the clear skies, towns and cities generally holding up just
01:48a bit above freezing but rural spots falling below and so some frost is quite likely, a
01:53few pockets of mist, but also need to watch out for some icy patches, especially across
01:57northern Scotland, Northern Ireland because we are seeing those showers coming through
02:02and where they fall on frozen surfaces, we are going to see some pretty slippery conditions
02:06tomorrow morning. Otherwise, and as we go through tomorrow, any cloud lingering from
02:10that rain in the south-east will clear away and then yes, there will still be some showers,
02:14particularly around some northern and western coastal parts, some showery rain also affecting
02:19Orkney and Shetland, but for most, it's actually looking largely dry. Decent amount of bright
02:24and sunny weather, though temperatures not especially high at all. They're similar to
02:28today, obviously in the south where we see greater amounts of sunshine compared to today,
02:32it is going to feel a little bit nicer. Notice out towards the west, we do have a system
02:37coming in, so a bit of cloud building across parts of Northern Ireland through the afternoon
02:41and then some rain is going to spill its way east and south-eastwards as we go overnight
02:46into Friday. So Friday, we will see that front pushing through, then it's gradually going
02:50to clear away to the south-east through the day itself. Another ridge of high pressure
02:54builds in, so we will see something a bit drier for a time, but as we go through into
02:59this weekend, we are going to see a north-west-south-east split. By that I mean towards the north and
03:03west, a greater chance of some strong winds and some heavy rain. Further south and east
03:08you are, you're more likely to stay dry, but that rain will eventually push through, albeit
03:13a bit lighter than it will be towards the north-west. For more information about what
03:16we can expect through this coming weekend and beyond, do make sure you check out our
03:20latest 10-day trend, which will be available later on this afternoon with Honour. I'll
03:25see you again soon. Bye-bye.
