Costa and Jansen play the stay-or-go game with every Lions free agent this offseason, claiming which players they would keep and who they would be fine with letting go.
Transcript
00:00We are officially into the Lions offseason, and before we get to players,
00:04they may draft down the line or free agents they may target starts in-house.
00:08How about a little stay or go free agent edition?
00:14Tom's got names.
00:16All right, I think the first one's the biggie.
00:19Carlton Davis.
00:21Should he stay or should he go?
00:22I say stay now.
00:24It's going to depend.
00:24Does he want like a three or a four year deal?
00:27That's where it gets dicey.
00:28But he's everything they could have wanted and more man coverage veteran.
00:33And he played very well.
00:34He's a Super Bowl champion to me.
00:35That's a stay.
00:36I think it's a stay as well.
00:38And, you know, part of it, if you're going to bring back or promote
00:41somebody within as defensive coordinator, why are you doing that?
00:44It's consistency.
00:45It's terminology.
00:46You have a guy that has played in this system that.
00:50That Kelvin Shepard is familiar with, knows his skill set.
00:54Why bring in somebody else to do a similar job?
00:57Now, if you're going to try and majorly upgrade, you're going to have to go out
00:59and spend a whole bunch of money and it will come down.
01:02And a lot of these guys kind of come down to what are you willing to spend?
01:05And what's the term going to be?
01:08But I think for Carlton Davis, he proved his value.
01:11And I think this is a guy that you definitely want to bring back.
01:14You want someone you trust if you're going to play man,
01:16you got to put him on an island and he'll come up in the run game.
01:18He's a perfect film.
01:20No more than two years, though.
01:22No way.
01:23No way.
01:24I might go three.
01:26I think he's three if it's really only two, though.
01:28I mean, you can get kind of fuzzy with it.
01:30Yeah. All right.
01:30Levi owns a recay.
01:32This is a hard no for me.
01:34And I know that there was a lot of discussion coming out of training camp.
01:37Oh, he's healthy.
01:38And look at what he could do.
01:39He could play all four spots.
01:42He was still limited in what he was able to do.
01:45I didn't like him coming out.
01:47One year out of the four he's been able to play.
01:51And he may have played well enough to for somebody to pay him.
01:54Just not the it's a very Jonah Jackson esque.
01:58I think player.
01:59I think Jonah Jackson did more than he did.
02:01Yeah, there's no question he did more.
02:03But you didn't want to sign him for 20 million a year.
02:05To me, this is go.
02:06And I feel like we had smoke blowing up our you know what?
02:09He just never delivered.
02:10It flashed for like one game, I think.
02:13But with him, that's a Brad Holmes admission, by the way.
02:16Highest pick.
02:17He will not resign.
02:19All right. Next one.
02:20Kevin Zeitler.
02:23Stay. He was super productive last year.
02:25The offensive lines, the engine.
02:26And I want to have depth.
02:28Maybe Mahogany displaces Glasgow and Glasgow becomes a flex player
02:32who can play center or guard.
02:33But I like depth.
02:34I like productive players.
02:35I'd keep Zeitler.
02:36It's going to come down to money and it's going to come down to amount of years.
02:38Now he was on a one year deal.
02:39Was it a one year prove it deal?
02:41If you prove it, we're going to give you a two year deal.
02:42I don't I don't know that I want to go two years because he did miss time.
02:47So this one is a I.
02:50You could say go and replace him.
02:52I think it's if you can get them at the right price and the right length, then yes.
02:57But I'm fine with Mahogany stepping in there and addressing backups in a different way.
03:02All right. I think this one's interesting.
03:03A little bit of an unsung one with fans.
03:06Tim Patrick.
03:07I said go.
03:08He's productive, but I don't think he's someone that's bolted down here.
03:11And that's a spot you could actually upgrade to depending on how the offseason goes.
03:14I agree. I think that we've seen that that position,
03:17that that that receiver position, we want to call it three, four,
03:21whatever you want to call it, is kind of interchangeable.
03:24You get a guy that you can rely upon for one year and it works.
03:28It helps. But he's had injury issues.
03:31This one's very interesting to me.
03:33I think the toughest one on the list, actually, Derek Barnes.
03:38Stay. I agree.
03:40I think he he provides great depth.
03:43He provides great flexibility.
03:45He can play a number of different linebacker positions.
03:47Special teams, too.
03:48Yeah, I think he's a guy that is valuable to this team.
03:50And I also think he's a guy that has proven his worth, but is not going to.
03:55It's not he's not going to command a big contract to break the bank. No.
04:00All right. The next one, if he Mella Fonwoo.
04:03No, I think this one's easy.
04:06And I know that, you know, coming in at the end of the last couple of years,
04:10he's been a nice addition and it's been fun.
04:13But you can't if you can't stay on the field, we can't be counted on for
04:1715 of the 17 games, certainly not 17 games.
04:20Then no item is to stay.
04:22But these are fringe guys, right?
04:24I think he has a role third safety.
04:26It's just a shame he wasn't healthy at the large portion of this season.
04:30Is that the first one you guys disagreed on?
04:33Yeah, I think so.
04:34But no, it was Eitler.
04:35Yeah, I was I was fine with him.
04:37He was go. Yeah. OK.
04:38Marcus Davenport.
04:40Go, go, go on the list.
04:44Yeah. And I mean, if you could ever get the most out of him, then.
04:49Yeah. And it was a good gamble.
04:51But he's a China doll. He just gets hurt.
04:54And that's a spot I want him to upgrade, by the way, to
04:56I wouldn't just feel comfortable rolling it back with him.
04:58I said that unsung fan favorite kind and Tim Patrick this year a little bit.
05:03But this is the true fan favorite Dan Skipper.
05:08To me, this one is a stay and I don't care about the whole fan favorite.
05:13This is a guy that
05:15when he came in, the first time he came in to play left tackle
05:18when Decker was down, I thought, oh, no.
05:20And it was not good.
05:22But the next time he was serviceable, I think he's a swing tackle
05:27that can be a backup on either side.
05:29We've seen what he can do as an extra offensive lineman.
05:31I think he provides really good value.
05:33He is an amazing locker room guy.
05:35His story is the stuff we all love.
05:39I want to see them upgrade the third tackle spot.
05:41I don't know how long Decker is going to be as productive as he's been.
05:45I'd like to invest in a swing tackle, so I would let Skipper go.
05:50All right. Next one, Khalil Dorsey.
05:53Go. Yeah, this is a guy that
05:57he can come in and play a very limited role.
06:01And the term I have down here and for the next guy is upgradable.
06:06Could certainly upgrade them.
06:07And it's not going to cost you a lot.
06:09And this next one, there's an acronym now, ABV,
06:12and it's anybody but Vildor.
06:14I think that's what fans want.
06:15I think that's what we want.
06:16Just you know what?
06:17You've got to have a depth guy.
06:18So Kendall Vildor, do you want him back?
06:20Again, upgradable.
06:21I know I'm jumping ahead in the line here, but I mentioned both guys upgradable.
06:26I think he gets a bad rap for the ball going off his face mask
06:29in the NFC championship game.
06:31He did play at times as a serviceable corner or nickel corner.
06:36But again, you're not going to have to pay much to upgrade.
06:40PFF graded him out as 114th out of 118 players at his position.
06:45It's not just us that don't like him.
06:47You can go.
06:48All right. The next one.
06:49I'm going to butcher this maybe, but Al-Quadeen Mohamed.
06:52Oh, good job. I think that's good.
06:54He had a couple of moments this year.
06:55I keep him stay.
06:57You're talking about some depth guys here that I think do provide.
07:01Good depth, and he can come in
07:05and give a guy a breather for a couple of plays.
07:08You can you can rotate him in.
07:09And I think he's a guy when you start talking about having to pay him,
07:14you're paying him for what, 10 to 12 plays per game max.
07:19And so that's how you've got to value him.
07:21But he can come in in those 10 or 12 plays.
07:23You're not going to get a huge drop off.
07:25Last one, Teddy Bridgewater.
07:27Hmm.
07:29This is interesting.
07:32And and I think that this this opens up the.
07:36Rabbit hole to go down for Hendon Hooker,
07:40the QB two, and what happens if Goff gets hurt?
07:44I don't even want to talk about if Goff gets hurt, but.
07:47I think you bring him back because I don't think Hendon Hooker
07:50is developing into the guy that they thought he would be.
07:53And Bridgewater is not old.
07:55Like, I know he stepped away, but what is he, 32?
07:58He is a guy that could still be serviceable like he was in that game.
08:04I think it's a lower ceiling with him as the backup, right?
08:08It's a it's a it's a lower ceiling.
08:11This this is some of the stuff that I hate during the draft.
08:14Lower ceiling, but higher floor.
08:16He is a guy that is is he's safe.
08:18That's a great way to put it. I think he's safe.
08:20What's going on with Brunel?
08:21Is he staying? I don't think we know yet.
08:23So he could be Bridgewater could be the quarterback coach.
08:25Very likely. I actually I was going to say that I go.
08:28He's already been into coaching, and I think that's the direction he wants to go.
08:31I think you still have to give Hendon Hooker a shot to be the backup quarterback.
08:34This was a go for me.
08:36But he could stay on the coaching staff.
08:37Can I throw something else at you?
08:39You didn't get to prepare, so it's a little unfair. It's fine.
08:42Who on this roster is most likely going to be the most surprising departure?
08:47And it can be on this list or could be somebody else
08:51like a cut candidate, you're saying?
08:52Just.
08:52Sorry, I shouldn't have done that.
08:57I will not hold this to you.
08:59Oh, boy, I'm I'm trying to look at this, I think.
09:03All right, you know, I'm saying is it Darius?
09:06Maybe it would.
09:08There's a roster bonus. They may have to rework that.
09:11They may just want to pivot somewhere else.
09:12I don't know. I don't you're not holding me to it,
09:14but there's a name that's out of left field that maybe could surprise people
09:17if he wasn't back.
09:18Zytler would be the other one, but I don't know how surprising it is.
09:20Given he's getting older and even Holmes kind of in his press conference,
09:24Brad Holmes acknowledged, hey, you know, as you get older,
09:27there are some considerations there.
09:29I think the big surprise might be Derek Barnes.
09:31I think there is somebody out there that might decide that he is worth
09:35more than the Lions are willing to pay him.
09:37I could see that at stay or go.
09:38Lions free agents. Ninety seven.
