00:00This February, we celebrated National Cancer Awareness Month
00:03as a reminder of the importance of proper information and early action against cancer.
00:08This month, World Cancer Day is also celebrated, which will be held tomorrow, February 4, 2025.
00:13That's why in our design, Doc, we will have with us the President of the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology,
00:20Dr. Chita Nassal Matunog. Good morning, Doctor.
00:25Good morning. Good morning.
00:26Good morning, Doctor. This is Diana and Audrey.
00:28Alright, Doc, what is the purpose of celebrating World Cancer Day and why are we celebrating it?
00:35World Cancer Day is an international celebration of cancer that is held every year, every February 4.
00:45It aims to increase awareness on the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer.
00:52This is led by the largest cancer organization, which is the Union for International Cancer Control, or UICC.
01:02Okay, Doctor, what are the activities and projects that are being carried out?
01:11Actually, if you look at the website of the UICC, they have a map of activities.
01:17And all the cancer awareness activities to be held tomorrow or during this week,
01:23you will see on their map of activities for every country.
01:28Now, if you click on the Philippines, there are several activities going on tomorrow.
01:35And the biggest probably is this. This is the World Cancer Day 2025 celebration,
01:42which is being led by the Quezon City local government.
01:45And this is in partnership with several cancer organizations like the Philippine Cancer Society,
01:52the Philippine Society of Oncologists, our society, the Philippine Society of Medical Oncologists,
01:59other partners like the government and private hospitals in Quezon City like the Lung Center of the Philippines,
02:08the East Avenue Medical Center, and St. Luke's Medical Center.
02:13So that will be held at SP Park on IBP Road, Batasan Hills from 8 to 12 noon tomorrow.
02:23And there are other free cancer screening activities that will also be held in conjunction with that celebration.
02:33All right. Doctor, how common are the number of cancer cases in the Philippines?
02:39And what are the most prevalent among these?
02:44Okay. Cancer is the second most common disease causing mortality or death among Filipinos.
02:53It is second only to heart disease.
02:55And third after cancer is stroke, followed by diabetes.
03:01So if you notice, these are non-communicable diseases that are the top five leading illnesses causing mortality in the country.
03:14So according to the Global Cancer Observatory or what we call Globocan,
03:19which collects all the incidences and deaths of cancer worldwide,
03:24the estimated incidence rate of new cancers in 2022 in the Philippines is about 189,000 with about 113,000 deaths during that year.
03:39A five-year prevalence rate of probably about 466,000.
03:45So that's how prevalent cancer is in our country.
03:50Well, Doctor, early detection is important.
03:56Are there free screening or check-up programs that are allocated to the public?
04:03Okay. Based on the most common cancers, I didn't mention it earlier.
04:07So the most common cancers in men is lung cancer, followed by colorectal cancer,
04:13the cancers in the stomach, and then prostate cancer.
04:18In women, number one is breast cancer, followed again by colorectal cancers, and thirdly by cervical cancer.
04:28So most of the screening activities that we have are focused on these main cancers.
04:34So I think in health centers, there is an existing cervical cancer screening using the visual inspection using acetic acid that our barangay health workers or midwives do.
04:52For breast cancer, as I've said, tomorrow, there will be a breast cancer screening that will be happening in Quezon City.
05:03In Davao City, where I come from, the biggest hospital there, which is the government hospital, Southern Philippines Medical Center,
05:11is also holding a breast cancer screening activity for women, employees of the hospital, and also the community.
05:22In the Lung Center of the Philippines, their project has been going on for a long time.
05:27There is also an early lung cancer screening program for patients who are high-risk for lung cancer.
05:34So usually, what is used here is not a chest X-ray, but what we call a low-dose CT scan.
05:41This February, there will be a new cervical screening test that will be provided to the public using the HPV DNA testing.
06:00So this is the most common virus, which is a risk factor for cervical cancer.
06:07And come this July, PhilHealth announced that mammogram and ultrasound of the breast will also be included in the PhilHealth coverage already.
06:17So those are very welcome screening procedures that can help detect cervical, breast, and lung cancer.
06:29Lastly, what is your message to those who are currently fighting this disease?
06:37Cancer is a really devastating disease when you are diagnosed with one.
06:44So my advice to patients is to really know your cancer.
06:49Knowledge is power.
06:51So for them to have basic information on what disease they have,
06:56they have to ask their doctor.
06:59Ask questions.
07:01What disease is this?
07:02Where did it come from?
07:04Where did it spread?
07:05What is its stage?
07:07What are my options for treatment?
07:10What are the side effects of the treatment that you will offer?
07:15And what are the goals of treatment if I undergo one?
07:20Will it be for cure?
07:22Will it be for control?
07:24So one third of cancers is preventable.
07:30One third is curable.
07:32But sadly, we get our patients late and most of them will be for control of the disease.
07:38So for any stage of the disease, we can offer something to help the patient.
07:43So it's also very important for patients to have a support system.
07:49They can't be alone.
07:51They need help.
07:53There are loved ones, family members, caregivers who should be helping the patient go through their journey.
08:01And then it's very helpful if they will communicate not only to their family members, their loved ones,
08:09but also to other patients who have the same experience or who are undergoing the same journey.
08:15Sometimes, they are still listening.
08:19So sometimes, it's easier for them to understand their treatments
08:24or it's easier for them to understand and undergo their treatments
08:28if they hear it from another patient who is undergoing the same experience.
08:33They should also continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle despite having the cancer already.
08:39Because the problem will only increase if they will not.
08:43So they have to continue eating a healthy diet, continue to exercise, and get enough rest.
08:49And then they themselves should develop their own ways on how to deal with their cancer.
08:57Probably, whatever helped them in the past to go through rough times,
09:03they can use the same strategies to also help them go through their cancer.
09:07Alright. Thank you very much, Dr. Chita Nassal-Matunog, for your time and for sharing important information about World Cancer Day.
09:17Thanks, Doctor.
