00:00The big game out in New Orleans Super Bowl 59 live from Meteor Row and I got a special guest for you right here because I
00:06Grew up on Buddy Ball, and it's Mike Golic senior. I love the picture behind me
00:12Oh, it's back like when I look like an athlete
00:15Even though I wasn't that great of an athlete, but I kind of look like an athlete much different than now with the graying beard
00:20Yeah, I mean you
00:22Institutionalized for me as a kid, but let's go over everything how it went down grew up in Ohio
00:26How did you get to Notre Dame?
00:28Well my brother to four and a half hour drive my brother Bob who's six years older than me
00:32He went there in 75 so I kind of was
00:36Brought up on it a little bit when he went there. I was 12, and I got hooked on it. We'd go watch his games
00:42So I was hooked on it
00:44That was kind of where I wanted to go
00:46Once the recruiting cycle started for me, and then we basically brainwashed all our kids to go there as well
00:52Great institution at that point so you get drafted into the NFL you wind up with the Houston Oilers
00:57How was that that was it was I was a 10th round pick
01:00So it was a struggle to make the the team and for you young listeners out there
01:04It used to be the Tennessee Titans. Yeah is the Houston Oilers that make that make that connection there
01:10It was I was there for two and a half three years who was the coach there
01:14It was Jerry Glanville. It was his first head coaching Wow and what he was known for is on away games
01:20He would leave two tickets for Elvis
01:23Did he ever show up though Elvis with her impersonator showing up not show up in the house?
01:29But listen I enjoyed it. I was a linebacker in college and then all of a sudden went to the defensive line
01:35I like devolved yes from an athlete to an on athlete going down and put my hand in the dirt now you find your way
01:41to Philadelphia late
01:421980s this is when football finally turned in Philadelphia 1980 go to the Super Bowl some down years Mary Campbell you come in under buddy
01:49Ryan, how did you find your way to Philadelphia, and how did you think that fit was right away?
01:53Well, I got cut by the Houston Oilers after the after the the strike
01:58I was kind of real pro Union
02:00And they cut me after the after the strike ended and I went and visited a couple of teams
02:05But but it was a Tuesday. I got cut Thursday
02:08I visited Philadelphia and fell in love with buddy and his obviously I knew about buddy Ryan's defense
02:14yes, you know from the Bears and
02:16And buddy seemed to like me and they offered me a job on the spot
02:20I what I got cut Tuesday went there on Thursday and actually played in the game against the st. Louis Rams
02:27Yeah, that's Sunday by the way talking about that 1987 strike season
02:30Which was interesting because buddy always struck a nerve in Philadelphia being very pro Union
02:34It didn't want any of his players crossing that picket line at that point
02:37And I always understood that once they came back pro Union everybody was fine
02:41But buddy was very upset with the way some of the other teams handled that strike
02:45Oh, listen, I was upset. I was a 10th round pick. You're not making a comparatively other players a lot of money
02:51I was walking the picket line then all of a sudden the high paid
02:54Quarterbacks and rye receivers and defensive players the high paid ones were crossing the line
02:58I'm like what the hell is going on here. You're screwing us
03:02So yeah, it obviously did not end well
03:05Reliving the pass there, but buddy. Yeah, I gave out like fake rings and such
03:09Yeah, he really really disapproved always like this. Look at the Norman Brayman
03:14I remember I think Keith Jackson got a limo sent to the airport when he finally got paid
03:17But I do want to talk to you about this you played in one of the most iconic
03:19Football games in Philadelphia history correct me if I'm wrong the fog ball ball
03:23That was a playoff game the fog ball in Chicago was wild because the the fog rolled in and we weren't sure what it was
03:31Yes, we were like is there a fire is there smoke, but it didn't have that smoke fire smell
03:35It had no smell at all then all of a sudden we were engulfed in
03:39In fog and the wild part about it the ref would stand in the middle of the field
03:44And he would have his microphone to the to the the officials in the in the booth
03:49And he would say oh, I can still see both goalposts, and we're looking at him going
03:54What the hell are you looking at you can't see 20 yards away, but they there's no way
03:59They were gonna postpone that game. Yeah, once they started. There's no way they were gonna send everybody home
04:04So basically whoever was leading when the fog rolled in was gonna win and unfortunately for us
04:09The Bears were leading when the fog rolled in but that was a wild game
04:13I mean so many good games there this heartbreak watching the playoffs you lose the Chicago Bears
04:17I think it was the next year when I said was the Rams and veteran Stadium and then lost
04:21Yeah, they were tough all the way through but certainly iconic
04:24Just give me a quick anecdote because you played with Reggie white Jerome Brown Mike Pitts Clyde Simmons
04:29You know endless superstars on that line. How did you fit in with them?
04:32And like how did you earn the respect and the trust of them um just by being kind of the lunch pail guy?
04:37They were the great players the great athlete
04:39Yeah
04:39I was kind of a lunch pail guy that knew all the defense that knew all the calls
04:44Kind of kept everybody lined up where they should and then watch them do exceptional things
04:49Yeah on the field it would and and the thing about it is this was before free agency correct
04:54So they were all better friends to me than teammates guys. There was no movement
04:59So I mean listen losing Mike Pitts and and Jerome Brown
05:04And Reggie white and and Wes Hopkins and Andre waters was just devastating it really was it was a golden area there for the Philadelphia
05:12Eagles that we thought we're gonna go one Super Bowl
05:14Randall gets injured in 91 and we have that but I'm talking about big things Mike in your career
05:18Maybe nothing bigger right now than we're talking about here with you know a little bit about this product
05:22I'm gonna help you well
05:22I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in my early 40s like my father was and
05:27You need ways to monitor your glucose yes, and with stello. It's it's the first FDA approved
05:34glucose bio
05:36Biosensor that you can buy over-the-counter you do not need a prescription for it
05:40Yeah, and it hooks up to an app on your phone, okay?
05:42And it gives you what your glucose numbers are after a meal after a workout your sleep. It's continuous
05:48So instead of pricking your finger a hundred times a day to continuously find out what your blood sugar is
05:53You just have this app and it can give you great readings, okay?
05:57I shouldn't eat this or I shouldn't work out at this time, or I need more sleep
06:00It's kind of like a health advisor with an app, and it's a sensor fits right on the back of your arm
06:05You don't have to see it if you don't want simple to use great to use so
06:10Stello.com is where you can go check it out get all the info fantastic now. We're at the big game
06:14It's the Eagles and the Chiefs
06:16I got to ask you who we pulling for who we looking to win this guy picked
06:20Buffalo over Kansas City AFC championship game, and I was wrong. I'm picking Philly Philly has the better roster
06:26Yeah, but Kansas City just knows how to win especially one-score games
06:30But I think Saquon like he's been the difference all year Kansas City has to prove to me
06:35They can stop him they can stop him stop that old line and not have Jalen have to throw it 40 times a game
06:42None better in the clutch than Patrick Mahomes and those one-score game like I mean talk about it all the time at this point
06:47He's been absolutely phenomenal, but was phenomenal talking to you today. Enjoyed it much norton much needed success out there in the future
06:52Hopefully the Eagles can win, but I just want to thank you playing buddy ball and making us
06:56I enjoyed the time and you're maybe not the vet field so much, but I enjoyed playing for the Eagles absolutely
07:01I'll do it here for Radio Row. Thanks guys
