00:00We're going in the basement because we're hearing the tower make some very, very startling sounds.
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most
00:10unexplainable or terrifying events ever captured on live TV news.
00:15We will watch this all unfold live here.
00:19Number 30. White House Ghost.
00:22During a press conference outside the White House, TV viewers were shocked to see what
00:26appeared to be a ghostly figure watching then-President Barack Obama from a window of the
00:32White House. Many immediately dismissed the idea of a ghost, noting that the image was likely just
00:37a reflection. However, others insisted that the odd face-like shape looked different from other
00:43reflections in the window. Assertions of White House hauntings may seem shocking, but they
00:48certainly aren't new. Reports of eerie apparitions and ghostly encounters in the executive mansion
00:55date back to the 1800s. The Obamas even reported hearing strange noises in the night during their
01:01time there, making the idea of a phantom observer less far-fetched than you may initially think.
01:08Number 29. The Stanley Cup Riots.
01:11It's one thing to be a sore loser, but these hockey fans took their outrage to the next
01:16level following the 2011 Stanley Cup. When the Boston Bruins defeated the Canucks,
01:21a violent mob broke out in downtown Vancouver, which led to a number of fires, stabbings,
01:27and lootings.
01:28It is just after 8.30. The game ended about an hour ago, and this is the scene on Georgia Street.
01:34The riots resulted in approximately 150 injuries,
01:39as well as almost $10 million in damages and legal fees. Many local news stations sprung into action,
01:46capturing firsthand footage of the riots and broadcasting them live to the public.
01:50It was an almost dystopian scene to witness, but people all around the world were fascinated to
01:56watch such a horrendous public response to a major sporting event.
02:00Vancouver transformed into a war zone.
02:06Fires erupted in busy downtown intersections. Flames shot 30 feet into the air.
02:12Storefronts smashed by looters grabbing everything in sight.
02:16Number 28. A Blue Neon Glow.
02:18When a mysterious blue light blazed over the skyline in New York City in 2018,
02:23terrified onlookers didn't know what to think.
02:26The New York City sky lit up in a supernatural shade of blue.
02:30Oh my god.
02:31What is that?
02:32That looks gnarly.
02:34Look at the sky.
02:35Well, that doesn't look good.
02:37Sparking alarms citywide.
02:39As hundreds of eyewitnesses grabbed their phones to record the awe-inspiring sight,
02:44others watched the events unfold live on the news.
02:47Everyone wondered, what could cause such an ethereal blue glow?
02:51Aliens? Bombs? People flooded social media in search of answers.
02:55Thankfully, the source was soon revealed.
02:58A transformer explosion in Astoria had created a sustained electrical arc strong
03:02enough to light up the sky for miles around.
03:05What looked like a scene from an alien invasion movie turned out to be an explosion.
03:09Although the fire itself was small, it wreaked havoc citywide,
03:13creating blackouts and subway delays,
03:16and that unforgettable neon blue glow that temporarily turned night into day.
03:21Number 27.
03:22The Disappearing Woman.
03:24A seemingly ho-hum airport interview with the coach of Denmark's national women's handball team
03:29started making waves online in 2016.
03:32But it wasn't the actual interview that garnered so much attention.
03:35It was something creepy that happened in the background.
03:37As the interview progressed, a woman who could be seen standing nearby
03:41appeared to vanish into thin air as another woman walked past her.
03:45While the footage had many people convinced they'd witnessed something supernatural,
03:49others quickly pointed out that she probably just walked away when the other woman passed by,
03:54unintentionally concealing her departure.
03:57An otherworldly phenomenon or a perfectly timed exit? You decide.
04:02Number 26.
04:03Helicopter Collision.
04:05In 2007, as a man led police on an hours-long chase in Phoenix, Arizona,
04:10five news helicopters captured the action live from the sky.
04:14Viewers watched the pursuit from home until the live feed from two of the stations inexplicably
04:20stopped. The reason for the abrupt end became clear when other news crews on the scene began
04:25reporting that the two stations' helicopters had collided in mid-air.
04:30The exact cause of the accident remains unknown,
04:33but it's assumed that the pilots simply failed to check for other helicopters in the vicinity.
04:38Unfortunately, no one aboard either aircraft survived.
04:42In light of the tragedy, the city implemented new protocols for helicopter reporting,
04:46and all local English-language stations now share a single helicopter.
04:51The safety factor is that those are lives up there, and not only are there lives up there,
04:59there's lives on the ground.
05:00Number 25.
05:01Killed During Live Report.
05:03Journalists are trained to think on their feet and to prepare for the unexpected,
05:07but no one could have anticipated what happened to two unsuspecting Virginia news employees in 2015.
05:14While conducting a live interview for station WDBJ,
05:17reporter Allison Parker and photojournalist Adam Ward were ambushed by an armed assailant.
05:23As the trio was focused on filming their interview, the killer sets his sights on them.
05:29Shocked viewers heard gunshots and screams before the live feed died amid chaos
05:34and abruptly cut back to the anchor at the news studio.
05:38Both Parker and Ward died from their injuries on the scene.
05:41Vicki Gardner, who Parker was interviewing at the time of the attack,
05:45was wounded but later made a full recovery.
05:47The gunman was identified as a disgruntled former employee
05:51who was let go by the station in 2013.
05:54For Allison Parker and Adam Ward,
05:59the prayer vigils and makeshift memorials are out front of the WDBJ newsroom and inside.
06:05Steve Grant, who was an anchor at our sister station.
06:08Colleagues from sister stations in the Midwest have flown in to help.
06:13Number 24.
06:14Tiananmen Square Massacre.
06:16The 1980s brought significant change and economic growth to China.
06:20The population was divided over these dramatic shifts,
06:23with some people supporting the increased freedom while others wished to preserve state control.
06:28They turned Tiananmen Square, the country's symbol of sovereignty,
06:32into a hub of dissent and protest.
06:34They want a crackdown on corruption.
06:36They want freedom of press.
06:38They call for an awakening to reform and progress in China.
06:41Soon protests became common, particularly among university students
06:46favoring further political reform.
06:48In April 1989, following the death of Hu Yaobang, a well-known economic reformer,
06:55thousands of protesters gathered in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
06:59The government declared martial law to remove the encamped protesters.
07:03In June, troops and tanks descended on the area, killing hundreds.
07:08Horrified viewers watched as coverage from Beijing flashed across the news.
07:12Estimates run from several hundred to over ten thousand.
07:16Some argue that by shooting at civilians,
07:19the Communist Party lost its legitimacy to rule,
07:21and with it, an opportunity for political modernization.
07:24Footage of an unidentified civilian standing alone in front of a line of tanks
07:28became one of the most enduring images of the decade.
07:31Number 23.
07:33The Station Nightclub Blaze
07:35On the night of February 20, 2003,
07:38flames engulfed the Station Nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island.
07:42In a matter of moments,
07:44the club was a small single-story wooden building.
07:47It had no sprinkler system and didn't have a license for pyrotechnics or firework displays.
07:51Pyrotechnics went off during Jack Russell's Great White Band's first song.
07:56The display ignited the soundproofing insulation in the walls,
08:00and the resulting fire grew rapidly.
08:02Patrons pressed toward the doors, desperate to flee the intense heat and thick smoke.
08:08The band had just started playing.
08:10Ironically, the man taking these pictures was shooting a video about safety at pop venues.
08:16Then the pyrotechnics ignite the ceiling.
08:18The cameraman is already backing away.
08:20But several people tripped,
08:22piling up at the doors and blocking the only means of escape.
08:26As the situation escalated,
08:28local news station NBC10 interrupted its regular 11 p.m. programming to broadcast the story.
08:34More than 200 people were injured,
08:36and 100 people died as a result of the blaze.
08:40Number 22.
08:42Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster.
08:44One of the most terrifying and defining moments of the 1980s played out live in front of millions.
08:50Let's go down to the Kennedy Space Center and take a look at Challenger sitting on the pad.
08:549, 8, 7, 6.
08:57We have main engine start.
09:004, 3, 2, 1.
09:03And liftoff.
09:05The much-anticipated Space Shuttle Challenger launch
09:08was associated with the New Teacher in Space Project,
09:11an initiative designed to cultivate student interest in science, math, and space technology.
09:16Teachers across the country wheeled TVs into their classrooms on the morning of January 28,
09:211986 to watch Krista McAuliffe become the first teacher in space.
09:26But just 73 seconds after takeoff, disaster struck.
09:31Viewers nationwide sat in stunned silence as the spacecraft broke apart and disintegrated
09:38off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida.
09:40All seven people on board perished, including McAuliffe.
09:44The incident was the first fatal in-flight spacecraft accident in U.S. history.
09:49Today is a day for mourning and remembering.
09:52Nancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the Shuttle Challenger.
09:57We know we share this pain with all of the people of our country.
10:0021. Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami
10:04On March 11, 2011, the Tohoku earthquake became the largest recorded seismic event
10:10in Japanese history.
10:11The massive quake triggered a horrifying chain of events.
10:14A large tsunami with waves reaching an estimated height of 132 feet struck the coast shortly after.
10:21Whole towns were washed off the map, leaving nothing behind.
10:26Over 100,000 people were evacuated.
10:29The devastating rush of water destroyed homes and critical infrastructure, and claimed numerous
10:35lives.
10:36The accompanying snowfall and freezing temperatures crippled early rescue efforts.
10:40Further complicating matters, a power grid failure led to the biggest nuclear disaster
10:46since Chernobyl.
10:47The incident, known as the Fukushima nuclear accident, resulted in the release of radioactive
10:52contaminants throughout the surrounding area, including several evacuation zones.
10:57The tsunami flooded the nuclear power plant.
11:00Result?
11:01Massive overheating and reactors 1, 2, and 3 suffered meltdowns.
11:05Worldwide, viewers were transfixed as these events played out in the news.
11:1020. Alligator Freakout
11:19Sometimes you have to wonder how journalists get talked into holding animals on live TV.
11:28Boston's sport anchor, Steve Burton, was handling an alligator,
11:45and you can tell he's a little nervous.
11:47Then he makes the unfortunate mistake of getting it too close to the other reptile in the room.
11:52The four-legged guests clearly had some kind of argument before the newscast,
11:57because the proximity got them all riled up.
12:08As the alligator tried to squirm out of Burton's grasp,
12:12everyone around must have been picturing those sharp teeth taking a bite.
12:16Luckily, the handlers quickly got the situation under control.
12:20Burton still looked a little out of sorts, but the handlers clearly thought it was pretty funny.
12:2619. Bugged
12:27This incident was scarier for the reporter in question than the viewing audience.
12:32However, most of us can understand the primal fear inspired by something big flying at your face.
12:38Oh, oh, oh, what is that? That's because it's hot outside. Stuff like that happens.
12:44Was that live? Are we live? Oh, brother.
12:47Fox TV reporter Brad Wills was ready to report from the beach when a giant bug
12:52came straight for his head. He screamed in terror and smacked it away.
12:57After a quick recovery, Wills finally thought to ask his cameraman if the feed was live.
13:02It definitely was, and everyone got to enjoy the blooper at home.
13:0718. Far-Right Rage
13:10Disagreements between political parties are to be expected. However, this debate came to blows.
13:16When Greek politician Renadourou from the Coalition of the Radical Left
13:21said that Ilias Kassidiades' neo-Nazi party would take the country back centuries,
13:26he decided to prove her point. He threw water in Dourou's face, and when communist party member
13:33Liana Cannelli hit him with a newspaper, he slapped her three times in the face.
13:38Kassidiades was restrained in a room backstage,
13:41but broke through the door and left before police arrived.
13:45You don't have to speak Greek to understand that. We should have told you how disturbing
13:48that video actually is. He's currently in prison for directing a criminal organization
13:53implicated in violence against anti-fascists, activists, and immigrants.
13:5917. Mugged On Air
14:01Although journalists know better than anyone that crime can happen at any time,
14:06this incident was disturbing for both reporter and audience alike.
14:09CNN's Bruna Macedo was on the scene in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to report on rising river levels.
14:16Early in the report, a man can be seen watching her from a bridge in the background.
14:21Later in the broadcast, Macedo was approached by the menacing figure.
14:25While the studio co-host continues to talk, the assailant confronts the surprised reporter.
14:31Although not clearly visible on camera, the mugger threatened her with a knife,
14:35until she handed him two cell phones. The thief then fled. Thankfully, nobody was injured.
14:4216. A Close Call
14:44There's no denying the terror a moving vehicle can inspire.
14:54In 2016, the viewers of KTVU News feared for the life of reporter Alex Savage.
15:00He was facing the camera with his back to the street. Viewers watched in fear as a
15:05bumped car veered directly towards the reporter. Luckily, the photographer on the scene warned
15:14Savage just in time. They both jumped out of the way as the car smashed into the camera.
15:20While staring at a lone hubcap on the street,
15:22viewers must have been relieved to finally hear someone call out that everyone was okay.
15:3115. Lightning Strike
15:41We've all heard that it's dangerous to be at the highest point in the area when lightning strikes,
15:51so standing on a roof to do a storm weather report seems like a bad idea.
15:56Regardless, that's where Dave Malkoff was for this broadcast.
16:00In the middle of his sentence, a large blue flash could be seen overhead. The deafening
16:04thunderclap that accompanied it was almost instantaneous, and the fear in the reporter's
16:09face was clear as day. Later, he explained that he could see a column of lightning dissipating,
16:23and that the strike was directly above him. Realizing this, he made the wise decision to
16:28get off the roof and into a safer location. 14. A Shaken News Station
16:46News teams are used to calmly covering natural disasters as they happen.
16:51It becomes more difficult when the catastrophe is wreaking havoc around you, though.
17:00In 2017, a Mexican news station was in the middle of a live broadcast
17:05when a 7.1 earthquake struck. The whole set started to shake.
17:10The hosts calmly told the viewers to follow safety protocols as the station began to fall
17:23apart around him. Blurred shots from live cameras outside revealed the intensity of the quake.
17:29Meanwhile, inside the studio, overhead lighting began swinging wildly.
17:34It was a terrifying incident for both the news team and the viewers at home.
17:3813. Out of Control Guests
17:41This is the moment two journalists taking part in a TV debate in Jordan
17:45became so angry with each other they wrecked the studio.
17:48All you have to do is watch the panicked face of presenter Zuhair al-Ada to see that something is
17:54about to go wrong. During a live debate about the Syrian civil war on the Jordanian show
18:00Between Opposing Opinions, emotions got the better of journalists Shakir al-Juhari and
18:05Mohamed al-Jayousi. Al-Jayousi accused al-Juhari of supporting the revolution,
18:11while al-Juhari accused al-Jayousi of supporting the government. As they lunged at each other,
18:17they shoved the desk back and forth until it completely came apart.
18:22Al-Adha was powerless to stop them, and the production team had to jump in to separate them.
18:2712. World Series Earthquake
18:30On October 17th, 1989, during the live broadcast of the World Series,
18:35people watching at home suddenly saw their TV sets flicker.
18:39There were panicked voices, and suddenly the broadcast cut.
18:43Second base, so the Oakland A's take-
18:46Take-
18:47I'll tell you what, we're having a-
18:52As audio returned, viewers could hear people shouting in the stands.
18:56The event was of course even scarier for people who were there in the ballpark.
19:02I don't know if we're on the air.
19:05At that moment, the Loma Prieta earthquake had struck California's central coast,
19:10causing damage in both Oakland and San Francisco. While those in the ballpark were okay,
19:16the quake left 63 people dead and 3,757 people injured in the area.
19:2311. Freaky Doll
19:26Is there anything scarier than a creepy doll?
19:36In 2017, the viewers of a British morning show had a real-life experience with one.
19:41The guests claimed a doll was haunting their family, and even scratched the husband while
19:46they slept. During the segment, the object in question was sitting on a rocking chair on the set.
19:52As the show hosts were discussing the incidents with the owners, the chair began to slowly rock.
20:04There were many tweets from audience members and people freaking out about the seemingly
20:08paranormal occurrence. The hosts didn't seem convinced that the haunted doll was actually
20:14spooky, but there's definitely something creepy happening in this footage.
20:1810. Bouncing Back
20:23Reporter Tori Yorkey probably wasn't expecting an exciting evening when she
20:28went to report on a water main break in West Virginia. Then, she got hit by a car on live TV.
20:39Viewers could clearly see the vehicle coming up behind her as she reported on the flooding.
20:44As Yorkey falls out of sight, there's one brief horrifying moment when no one is sure
20:48if she's seriously hurt. However, the cheerful reporter quickly bounces back into the scene.
20:54My whole life just flashed before my eyes, but this is live TV and everything's okay.
20:58After announcing that she just got hit by a car, she blows it all off with a laugh.
21:03You stand there waiting for your shot to go on air for a few minutes at least, and of course,
21:10right as I'm about to talk, you know, it happens, and it just was amazing that it, like,
21:15got so in the frame.
21:189. A Bolt of Adrenaline
21:20During a monsoon in Phoenix, weatherman Matt Rodewald had a shockingly close call.
21:26The entire area where he was reporting was flooded. Cars were getting stuck in the roadways.
21:31The journalist was getting ready to report on the dangerous situation when a bolt of lightning
21:35struck behind him. It lights up the entire sky, and the bolt is startlingly clear.
21:44After initially moving to assess the situation, Rodewald quickly jumps back in front of the
21:49camera with a nervous laugh. Although the lightning missed the quick-footed journalist,
21:54it did take out power in the area.
21:56And probably about two minutes before we hit the air, a very strong lightning strike,
22:00probably about a half a half a mile from where we are,
22:03knocked out the lights on the street. Very nerve-wracking for sure.
22:068. Strange Skylights
22:09When anchors at a Milwaukee news station cut to an outdoor camera in the early hours of February
22:1527th, 2018, they got a much stranger scenic view than they were expecting.
22:20Are those fireworks?
22:23Who's that?
22:27Aliens?
22:28Multiple streaks of white light could be seen moving quickly across the dark morning sky.
22:33The anchors' first thoughts were that it could be fireworks or maybe aliens.
22:37At first, their tone is light, but you can hear a growing concern as
22:41the phenomenon continues with little obvious explanation.
22:44You see it, right?
22:45I'm actually, uh, yes, I do see it.
22:48It's getting weirder by the second.
22:49I know.
22:50It's like they're sticking around.
22:51We're gonna do some digging and figure out what that is back in a moment.
22:56Later, the news station reported that it was a flock of seagulls reflecting
23:00early light in a long-exposure camera shot.
23:03Although this seems like a logical explanation, many viewers were still skeptical.
23:087. Zombie Apocalypse
23:10We're stretching our criteria for this one, as it came during a tabloid talk show,
23:15The Steve Wilkos Show.
23:16In 2013, viewers of local Montana station KRTV heard an unbelievable and terrifying announcement.
23:24The show was interrupted by an emergency broadcast warning of the zombie apocalypse.
23:28Civil authorities in your area have reported that the bodies of the dead
23:32are rising from their graves and attacking the living.
23:35They were told, in a calm, authoritative voice,
23:37that dead bodies were rising from graves and attacking the living.
23:41The serious nature of the report had viewers worried.
23:44Many called in to local police stations.
23:47It was later discovered that the news station's emergency alert system was hacked,
23:51and the whole incident was a hoax.
23:53The station, as you can imagine, is saying it's trying to find out how this happened.
23:58Most residents probably knew that it wasn't real,
24:00but we're guessing that they chose to stay inside for a while, just to be safe.
24:056. Helicopter Havoc
24:07In 2004, footage of an out-of-control helicopter stunned viewers.
24:11We're following breaking news in Brooklyn,
24:13and you're about to see dramatic pictures of a helicopter crash.
24:17The scene was like something out of a movie, not a real-life event.
24:20While covering an incident in Brooklyn, the aircraft started to spin and spew smoke.
24:26It clipped the edge of a building, taking chunks off the structure.
24:30The chopper belonging to TV station WNBC losing control, as you can see,
24:34hitting a building and crashing on a rooftop.
24:37The tail of the vehicle broke off,
24:38and the cabin crashed into the roof of an apartment complex.
24:42Whether watching on TV or from the streets below,
24:44viewers were shocked that the pilots and reporter on board suffered only minor injuries.
24:505. Frightening in-flight video
24:53Not long after JetBlue Flight 292 made it into the air,
24:57the pilots realized that they had a serious problem.
25:00The plane's landing gear was off-kilter and wouldn't retract.
25:04Ultimately, they decided to land at LAX,
25:06but first had to burn as much fuel as possible to make the emergency landing safer.
25:12Unclear as to what they might be able to do to right that nose gear.
25:15In the meantime, firefighters at the Long Beach Airport,
25:17they are standing by and prepared for every possible emergency.
25:20Viewers at home watched the drama unfold on live TV.
25:23Thanks to in-flight access to direct TV, the passengers did as well.
25:28Luckily, the video on the plane was turned off before the nail-biting landing.
25:33Although there was smoke, sparks, and flame, the malfunctioning aircraft landed safely.
25:38All viewers, in and out of the plane, breathed a huge sigh of relief.
25:43But you can see no indications of any fire on board this aircraft.
25:47It appears that this has all come to a very safe conclusion.
25:51Number 4. Alien Message
25:54Are we alone in the universe? Maybe we already have an answer.
25:58These include stopping the execution of all captured prisoners of war.
26:02On November 26th, 1977, an independent television news program was suddenly interrupted in parts
26:14of southern England. A distorted voice identifying itself as Ashtar Galactic Command
26:20ordered humans to get rid of their weapons to attain a higher state of evolution.
26:25This is the voice of Command, representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command.
26:32Speaking to you, for many years you have seen us as knights and astronauts.
26:39The interruption lasted six minutes, prompting hundreds of calls from worried viewers.
26:44The perpetrator was never identified. Our species didn't abandon its weapons,
26:49so maybe the enlightened extraterrestrials threw up their hands and wandered off to contact
26:54other worlds. We understand that viewers in some parts of the region are receiving a
26:59breakthrough in sound. We're sorry about this and we're doing our best to rectify the fault.
27:04Number 3. Thirsty Ghost
27:07This freaks us out just to watch. In December 2015, the Honduran morning show Primera Edición,
