00:00Singapore's former Transport Minister S Iswaran has been placed under house arrest
00:06just four months after being sentenced to 12 months in prison for receiving gifts worth
00:10over S$400,000.
00:14The Singapore Prison Service confirmed that Iswaran 62 had been placed under its home
00:18detention scheme, CNA reported.
00:21The department said the sentence includes specified conditions such as curfew monitoring
00:25using an electric monitoring tag, being gainfully occupied either in work, study or training
00:31and reporting to the Singapore Prison Service for counselling.
00:35It also said Iswaran was deemed suitable for the home detention scheme as he was at low
00:39risk of repeating the offence, had strong family support and did not commit any institutional
00:44offences while jailed.
00:46Iswaran pleaded guilty in September to amended charges involving four counts of receiving
00:51gifts and one of obstructing justice.
00:54He was initially charged with 35 counts, including corruption.
00:57In January 2024, he resigned as a minister and MP, as well as from the ruling People's
01:02Action Party, saying he would defend his innocence in court.
01:06Singapore's Prisons Act allows inmates to be placed under the home detention scheme
01:10for a maximum of 12 months.
01:12The inmate must have been sentenced to more than four weeks in prison and served at least
01:1614 days of the sentence.
