00:00Good day, welcome to the Gulf News Update for Sunday, December 15. Here are the top
00:09stories at this hour.
00:12South Africa held a state funeral for Nelson Mandela today, closing one chapter in its
00:17tortured history and opening another in which the multiracial democracy he founded will
00:22have to discover if it can thrive without its central pillar. The Nobel Peace Laureate
00:26was honoured with ceremonies that mixed military pomp with the traditional rites of his Xhosa
00:31Abu Dhabi clan. The funeral drew 4,500 guests from relatives and South African leaders to
00:38Britain's Prince Charles, American civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson, and
00:43talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
00:46Dubai Municipality has started a campaign against bachelors who share bed spaces in
00:51neighbourhoods such as Satwa. As a result of the inspections, the number of offences
00:55has shot down from 2,321 in 2012 to 1,523 this year. More than 5,000 people in the Gaza
01:05Strip have been evacuated from their homes because of severe floods caused by torrential
01:09rain. Rescuers have had to use rowing boats to reach residents trapped by rising flood
01:15waters. UN officials have described parts of the northern Gaza Strip as a disaster area.
01:21Tunisian politicians have agreed on a new prime minister after talks between the ruling
01:26Islamist Al-Nahda party and the opposition. Mahdi Jumaa, industry minister, will head
01:31a caretaker government until elections are held next year.
01:36Sport. An England midfielder, Jack Wilshere, may face a Football Association inquiry after
01:41appearing to make an obscene gesture during Arsenal's 6-3 loss to Manchester City at
01:45the Etihad Stadium. A frustrated Wilshere made a gesture during the game for the Premier
01:50League leaders, who now lead City by only three points.
01:55Eva Longoria, Ricky Martin, Haifa Wahbi and rapper 50 Cent raised thousands of dollars
02:00to help blind people around the world at a charity event in Dubai last night. The rapper
02:05dropped into Longoria's Global Gift Gala to auction off a set of headphones.
02:10Rock band Black Sabbath are booked to perform in Abu Dhabi next year. The group, led by
02:15frontman Ozzy Osbourne, play at Yas Island on May 29, with tickets going on sale tomorrow.
02:22And finally, weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 27 degrees Celsius, dropping
02:26to 21 degrees at night.
02:29That's all for now. Thanks for watching. And as always, you can get the latest news
