00:00Good day, welcome to the Gulf News update for Thursday, August 24th, here are the top
00:06stories at this hour.
00:07India's Supreme Court ruled that citizens have a constitutional right to privacy, a
00:11landmark verdict that could have wide-reaching implications for the government's biometric
00:15program which holds data on over 1 billion people.
00:19Privacy is not explicitly mentioned in the Indian Constitution and the government has
00:23argued that the country's 1.25 billion citizens cannot expect an absolute right to it.
00:28But in a brief statement, Chief Justice J. S. Kher said privacy was protected as an intrinsic
00:34part of Article 21 that protects life and liberty.
00:37The judges were unanimous, he said.
00:38The Supreme Court set up a special bench to rule on the issue after a legal challenge
00:43to the government's Aadhaar biometric program, which has recorded the fingerprints and iris
00:47scans of more than 1 billion Indians.
00:50The most powerful typhoon to hit the southern Chinese region in more than half a century
00:54left at least 12 dead as a sudden deluge swamped the gambling hub of Macau, submerging
00:59streets and stranding residents.
01:00Eight people were killed in the former Portuguese colony, including two men found overnight
01:05in a parking garage.
01:06Another 153 were injured amid extensive flooding, power outages and the smashing of doors and
01:11windows by the high winds and driving rain.
01:13Yes, Taylor Swift fans, Wednesday was a lucky one for you.
01:16The pop star who whipped her army of Swifties into a frenzy with video snippets of slithery
01:21snake parts on social media posted the title of her new album, Reputation, and announced
01:26online it will be out November 10.
01:27The first single she said in a series of posts will drop tonight.
01:31And finally, the weather.
01:32Today's high across the UAE will be 43 degrees Celsius, dropping to 31 degrees at night.
