00:00Thought that Lucknow were chasing 180. But it seemed they forgot that they had to chase in 20 overs.
00:06And the way they were going, it was a damn squib after watching two close games in the last two days.
00:12Once again, they came back to the same Rahul and his company, forgetting that they had to chase within 20 overs and not 25 hours.
00:20Hello everyone. Welcome to Straight Bad with Gulf News and Mr Cricket UAE, that is Anish Sarjan.
00:34We are here to discuss today's IPL match, that is Royal Challengers Bangalore's win over Lucknow Supergiants.
00:42It turned out to be promised much but delivered little, I would say. But I will let Anish sum it up for us.
00:49Thank you, Shyam. Hello, Mr Gautam. Hello, Chavi. Good to have you. And hello to all the lovely people of Gulf News.
00:56Yes, you are right, Shyam. Thought that Lucknow were chasing 180. But it seemed they forgot that they had to chase in 20 overs.
01:04And the way they were going, it was a damn squib after watching two close games in the last two days.
01:10Once again, they came back to the same Rahul and his company, forgetting that they had to chase within 20 overs and not 25 hours.
01:17Chavi, we have a new guest with us, that is Charvi Bhatt. She is a former UAE cricketer and now a TV pundit.
01:29So, let's go to her right away. At the start of the Bangalore inning, 64-4 in 7.10 overs.
01:38Did you think they would make it to 181? Well, they needed a steady partnership which they got of Faf du Plessis and Shahbaz Ahmed.
01:48And courtesy, the few runs that came off their willow. That partnership was key in those middle overs.
01:56And it's a tough wicket to bat on. Not a simple wicket in comparison to the other grounds.
02:01It's nippy. We saw Jason Older getting those odd bounces. We saw that in the second innings as well.
02:08So, it was not going to be simple for even Lucknow to chase this total.
02:12So, anything above 160 would have been a challenge. And it's been a record in this IPL so far,
02:18that all the matches that were played at Divai Patil, anything over 160 has been a challenge for the sides to be chasing.
02:26Gautam is a sports editor. Sorry, he is no longer a sports editor. He is a senior associate editor now.
02:34So, Gautam, tell us something about Faf du Plessis. A brilliant under pressure, isn't it?
02:39Absolutely. I mean, see, Faf is a person who brings so much value for money to whichever franchise he goes.
02:49The way he paced his innings, suddenly you see that at the back end of the innings, he is 50 plus, he is 60 plus.
02:57And he is always there. He bats deep, takes you to whatever goal you need to achieve.
03:04And so that later, DK did not get the chance to wield his willow that much.
03:12But they took it to 181, which was good enough.
03:16At least, shall we say, anything over 160 at the Divai Patil stadium is a stiff total.
03:22But did you at any point feel that Bangalore's 181 was in danger of being overhauled by Lucknow?
03:29Since they bat very deep.
03:31Honestly, as I am… Yeah, shall we go on?
03:35Yeah, I mean, they do bat deep. But you know, the conditions were a bit tough for both the sides.
03:42And you know, Lucknow Supergiants, there were times when I think they got a little hasty.
03:48I am sure Anisa would agree with me that they were not so resilient in their middle overs.
03:55You know what I observed in this game that they were trying to hit the ball too hard
03:59rather than time the ball or place the ball.
04:01And that's what happens when you try to hit the ball.
04:03You are not able to find the placement and get the gaps.
04:07They overly depend on the captain Rahul when chasing a target.
04:11But I probably beg to differ on that Divai Patil, the scores have been chased.
04:16In fact, big totals have been chased.
04:17Maybe this might be one of those wickets where it was difficult.
04:20But I felt there was no intent shown by the Lucknow batsmen.
04:26And once again, they left it strenuous too late to come.
04:29They feel he is a superman who will come and hit 30 runs in two overs.
04:33Gautam Mahanis makes a good point about Stoine's batting order.
04:37But generally, if you look at the teams now, they are very keen on getting this left-right
04:43combination going on, which is why you see Kunal Pandey coming so early.
04:47And last time we saw, again, they also had a different order.
04:55So is that a problem here?
04:57Because the insistence on a left-right combination, is it distracting?
05:02Is it distracting the intent or the chase, rather?
05:10Clearly, it depends on how you are…
05:13If the wicket demands that you kind of stay there a bit and you wait for the right opportunities,
05:20right balls to hit or pick the right bowlers to hit.
05:22I mean, today what happened was, we will also have to factor in the exceptional…
05:27You know, in those two spells that Hazelwood did the damage.
05:31So, it's not necessarily…
05:35Yes, much is made of these match-ups these days.
05:38But left-right combination shouldn't tamper with the speed of the chase per se.
05:45Jhavi, you've been a player.
05:46So, does this affect?
05:47Because some batsmen prefer to have regular slots, but that's no longer the case in T20.
05:53T20 is now anybody bats everywhere.
05:56Is that a problem?
05:58It's not a problem.
05:59You know, as a cricketer, you should learn how to adapt to different situations.
06:04You know, the game situation could be anything.
06:06And that's the real test of you being a sportsperson, especially a cricketer.
06:11And it's not really a problem, be it a left-right combination.
06:14They do it to get the inconsistency aspect in the bowlers.
06:20To keep…
06:21You know, when you have a fielder, when you have a left-right combination going on,
06:24you have the field that's changing every ball.
06:26And if the strike is getting rotated, you're tiring the fielders out.
06:30It's also a strategy that you use.
06:33You know, you mentally make that impact on the players.
06:36From a batting perspective, you know you've got a variety of shots that you can play.
06:42You've got scoring runs.
06:43You know the bowler is going to bowl a loose-odd delivery.
06:46And once they start bowling those loose-odd deliveries, then you capitalize on it.
06:50So, the left-right combination is a good thing and a bad thing for both sides.
06:56Yeah, but that also throws the bowler's length and line away, isn't it?
07:00Defensively, you have to…
07:01Of course.
07:02That's the inconsistency aspect of getting that out of the bowler.
07:07Getting that inconsistency.
07:09Because the maximum number of runs, you can hit a six.
07:13A great batsman will be able to hit a six of a very, very good delivery.
07:17But most, what we see the trends now, the batsmen are great.
07:21But the shots, they are coming off certain lines being erred here and there.
07:29Okay, coming back to Hazlewood.
07:31Hazlewood, four wickets did the damage, right?
07:35How good was their guidance?
07:38Obviously, you have to give it to him.
07:39You know, he bowled in the right channels.
07:41He was making sure that he bowled right at the off stump.
07:44And you have to say, the umpire also was a bit lenient to him, not allowing that wide…
07:49I am not giving that as an excuse for Lucknow's loss.
07:51They were never in the hunt, let me be very honest.
07:53They had the game.
07:54But let's give it to the bowler.
07:57He bowled well.
07:58And when you are defending 180, you need one bowler to do well.
08:01And they already have the other Indian guy who keeps getting them wickets.
08:07I keep forgetting his name.
08:08Arshil Patel.
08:09Arshil Patel.
08:09He is a rockstar.
08:10I will tell you.
08:11From the time he has joined, this guy, he has made a lot of difference.
08:16One match he was away, they were clobbered all around the park.
08:19And today, with Hazlewood supporting Arshil Patel, it was a different RCB on the park.
08:24How was your favourite bowler, Siraj?
08:27He bowled well, let's be very honest.
08:29Generally, he leaks a lot of runs.
08:32But as I said, the intent, without taking anything away from Siraj, there was not much intent.
08:37In the beginning, there was something there.
08:39But as I said, they were trying to hit the ball too hard, rather than place the ball or time the ball.
08:45And I felt this could have been chased.
08:48But Lucknow, probably their think tank goes for a toss when sending their players.
08:53Whom to send first and whom.
08:54They waste players like Holder and Stoinis in the end.
08:59Let me stay with you and ask about one more of your favourite bowlers.
09:03This is Hasar Hasaranga.
09:04He didn't have a good match today, right?
09:06Yeah.
09:07He bowled two overs.
09:08The first over was 10 and the second over probably also went for 10.
09:12I am not saying that he had a great game.
09:15But you see, today, you have to give credit to the captain.
09:19The difference between the two matches today, I feel, was the captain Shiva Phap.
09:22Not because he scored runs.
09:24But the way he utilised his bowlers.
09:25He was using the bowlers according to the batsmen coming on to the crease.
09:28And that credit has to be given to him.
09:31Without taking away anything from Phap, I would say that he was bang on.
09:35And yes, Hasaranga was not up to the mark as he always is.
09:39But one day, you will have a bad game.
09:42Absolutely.
09:43Gautama, Anish makes a good statement about Phap to place his captaincy.
09:49Phap to place is not the explosive kind of captain.
09:51You won't see him talking much, saying much or expressing much.
09:55But he is there with his bowling changes, his fielding, field setting.
09:59He is pretty much there.
10:00And Shaba, especially the time he introduced Shaba Samad into the attack.
10:05Four overs, 25 runs and one wicket.
10:07I thought that had a very good impact on the game.
10:10What did you feel about that?
10:13Yes, with the choice of spinners that he had, he brought Shaba on in the power play itself.
10:19Shaba did the job.
10:21But yes, one of the reasons why Hasaranga may not have been that effective today,
10:27I thought that there wasn't much grip on the wicket for the spinners.
10:31I mean, neither could Bishnoi make much of an impact early on.
10:35But yes, he believes in getting the job done.
10:38I mean, after being there and done that,
10:41he believes in getting the job done.
10:43And I've got quite a bit of faith on him.
10:45I mean, still, the team has quite a few holes.
10:48We can talk about it later on or keep it for some other day.
10:51You know, but yes.
10:53That all the teams have.
10:55Yeah, quite a revelation.
10:57No, I mean, I would have picked your brains and Anishbhai's brains about
11:01Kohli's dismissal today.
11:03Some other day.
11:05Some other day.
11:07Kohli himself is one full episode, actually.
11:11So, let's leave that for another day.
11:16I had something in mind when your Kohli thing just threw me out of kilter there.
11:23So, is there anything more you need to add, Shari?
11:29Well, I think it was a good game of cricket.
11:3210-nab went on to become a one-sided one after the 16th over.
11:38But kudos to RCB.
11:40On their decisions that they made, they set the field right.
11:44They had the fielders at the right spots.
11:46And we've seen some good catches come in play too.
11:49We had one catch that, you know, we had the fielder come running, sprinting in
11:55at the backward point region.
11:56And, you know, that catch was of Krunal Pandya.
12:01By, you know, Prabhu Desai.
12:04That was, I think, that was one of the turning points of the game.
12:08And if not for that catch, I think Krunal Pandya would have taken the match through
12:11all the way.
12:12Because he was looking in good touch.
12:16That's true.
12:16But Anish made one statement about lack of intent from left now.
12:25Do you agree with that?
12:27There probably was a little bit of lack of intent.
12:31I wouldn't 100% agree to it.
12:33But I just feel that the odds were not in their favour.
12:37And the batsmen, they hurried through to get to the total, hoping for the fact that,
12:44you know, they thought they were going to run out of the 20 overs.
12:47So let's hurry through it.
12:48They did not see through some of the difficult overs.
12:51Now the pacers, they were getting a little bit of an odd bounce also.
12:55And because of that, if you see most of the wickets that fell, that fell off the balls
13:01that hit the seam, they hit the deck on the seam.
13:04And they got that odd bounce and they got a top edge.
13:07Some of those essential wickets fell like that to the pacers.
13:13Okay, I totally get what Anish was saying.
13:16Because at no point, there was a haste.
13:18There was no hurry.
13:20So you never felt like they were chasing.
13:23I got the impression they were trying to dig deep into the game.
13:27Simply because they have a whole lot of all-rounders coming down the way.
13:31Gautam, did you ever feel that Lucknow was in the game and they're chasing?
13:39No, I didn't.
13:41This is to Gautam.
13:43Sorry.
13:44Yes, I'm not really, you know, they lack that partnership.
13:48You know, that 70-odd partnership which Faf and Shahbaz got.
13:54You know, something like that was missing.
13:56So they now need to decide that whether they're going to bring, you know,
13:59they've got two quality all-rounders in Jason Holder and Stoinis.
14:03Whether they are going to be their number four or five.
14:06Or they will keep on with Krunal and, you know, then Badoni.
14:12That's the thing which they have to decide if they look at maturity.
14:15People who can change, you know, the pace of their innings.
14:19Effectively, the lack of a partnership and somewhat over-dependence on KL Rahul again,
14:26which was the undoing of the chase.
14:28No, actually, they have a very good batting side there.
14:32Between Vikok and Rahul, they have one of the best opening players in IPL.
14:38And coming back to this intent thing, there was only one brief spell when I thought they
14:43were really serious about chasing.
14:45That is when Krunal and Rahul were together.
14:48After that, I mean, it just wilted actually.
14:51The whole chase wilted.
14:52And like I said, it promised so much in Chile.
14:54And it just, I mean, that promise never came through.
14:59A damn squib.
15:00Yeah, exactly.
15:01Finally.
15:02And okay, before we wrap this up, Anish, tell us about the contest.
15:10Oh, yeah.
15:11Every day we have a wonderful competition for all our Gulf News fans.
15:16And you got to praise the winner, which is difficult, to be very honest.
15:22Last seven have all gone wrong.
15:25And you walk away with a beautiful track set, which is a T-shirt,
15:28track suit, as well as a cap and a digital subscription from Gulf News for a year.
15:34And I have been getting all my predictions wrong.
15:36But that does not stop me from predicting.
15:38But today also, I wrote a piece predicting my latest predictions.
15:42Okay, well, tomorrow we have Delhi Capitals against the Punjab Kings.
15:45What's your pick, Charvi?
15:47Well, I think it's probably going to be a good game.
15:50Because both the teams, they need to get those two points to climb up on the table.
15:54And it will be a good fight.
15:57But I guess I will stand by Delhi Capitals.
16:00And, you know, because…
16:03Why?
16:04Sorry?
16:05Why?
16:07Why Delhi Capitals?
16:08You know, they are not such a bad side.
16:11And I think they deserve to win.
16:13They deserve to win.
16:14But they have won only two out of the five games.
16:16That's why I asked.
16:17Why?
16:18You know, it's a long tournament.
16:20We still have almost a month to go.
16:22And, you know, we're all part of a funny game called cricket.
16:26It's T20 format.
16:28You never know when the tables turn around.
16:30Tomorrow, I will not be surprised if Mumbai climbs up the table and wins all their remaining games.
16:35And they'll be part of the qualifiers.
16:37So anything can happen.
16:38We still have an entire season ahead of us.
16:41We still have an entire month to go.
16:44And, you know, I'm watching the game so closely, day in and out.
16:49Taking the game through ball by ball.
16:51So, you know, it can be anybody's day.
16:56Punjab are doing very well.
16:57No doubts about it.
16:59But, you know, I will second Delhi.
17:02Perhaps because I'd like to see them win.
17:05Gautam, do you subscribe to Charve's theory that the Delhi knees will win?
17:12Delhi has been showing quite...
17:15Delhi is not the same Delhi which we have seen over the last three seasons, really.
17:20I mean, there have been...
17:21I mean, it's the opening partnership which is firing.
17:24They're certainly missing the like of a sheer sire at number four.
17:29A couple of things are there.
17:30And even in the attack, I mean, they have to do without Anrich Nauke.
17:35So I think I will say it's 60-40 in favour of Punjab.
17:42Anish, what about you?
17:44I have been always backing Delhi because of the firepower.
17:47But now what has developed in the camp after that Mitchell Marsh, you know, catching COVID.
17:52I don't know how mentally prepared they are.
17:54They have been under quarantine.
17:56So I'll back Punjab.
17:58Yeah, and you make a very, very good point there.
18:00Because that COVID, I think, will definitely have an impact on this game.
18:05So I think Punjab would be in a better frame than I will go with you guys.
18:09So Charvi, you are the only one for Delhi and we three are with Punjab.
18:13Let's see how it pans out tomorrow.
18:14But thank you for tuning in.
18:16Thank you for being with us for the latest developments and updates.
18:21Please log on to galsnews.com and all our social media channels.
18:24Till tomorrow.
18:24Good night.
