00:00The New York Mets are indeed winners with Juan Soto.
00:04Bringing back Pete Alonso is the big linchpin for me
00:07because now you really have something to wager upon.
00:10Joe, when we talk about the big three,
00:11there's Lindor, Soto, Alonso.
00:12I think Vientos can be in that conversation as well.
00:15I think if Alvarez takes the next step,
00:17now you've got a really deep lineup.
00:19Senga's gotta be good.
00:20Klay Holmes is gonna be fun.
00:22I think Griffin Canning is even there, if I'm not mistaken,
00:25and the bullpen is what it is.
00:26Let's talk about the Mets.
00:28Well, Juan Soto, the biggest off-season acquisition
00:31by any team, so just from there, they're a winner.
00:33But bringing Pete Alonso back
00:34and lengthening this lineup is huge
00:36because now you're talking about Lindor,
00:37you're talking about Soto,
00:38you're talking about Alonso, Vientos, Nimmo.
00:42This is a really solid, deep lineup here.
00:45And they bring back Winker.
00:46I think Vientos is gonna be a star.
00:48I think he's got the possibility
00:49to hit 40 home runs this year.
00:51I think he's that good.
00:52And what about Francisco Alvarez,
00:54who was one of the best minor league hitters
00:56that we've seen in a long time?
00:58He hasn't even come close to reaching his potential.
01:00Now, I know the starting rotation
01:02looks underwhelming a little bit, and that's fair.
01:05Kodai Senga returning from injury again last year.
01:07You saw him a little bit in the playoffs.
01:09But what's so interesting about the Mets
01:10is they bring back Sean Mania,
01:11and they did an organization that's done a really good job
01:14of finding these pitchers with talent
01:17and getting the most out of them, right?
01:18You change the arm angle and the position on the rubber
01:20for Sean Mania,
01:21and he basically became Chris Sale last year.
01:23And that's not hyperbolic.
01:25Well, look at the numbers.
01:26It was insane what he did in the second half.
01:28You hope that maybe you can get the same thing
01:30out of Montosi getting a Severino last year.
01:32Another guy that was off the scrap heap,
01:34people rolled their eyes.
01:35But something about this Mets pitching organization right now
01:38and what the Stearns regime is doing is obviously smart,
01:42and they're getting a lot out of the return
01:44on investment with pitchers.
01:46I'm gonna give you a Clay Holmes comparison,
01:48and I want you guys to take this to heart.
01:50Think about Derek Lowe years ago with the Boston Red Sox,
01:53another guy who was in the Boston Red Sox bullpen, right?
01:58Extreme ground ball pitcher,
02:00was effective in the bullpen.
02:01They converted him to a starter.
02:02Remember how good Derek Lowe was as a starter?
02:05I think Clay Holmes can beat Derek Lowe
02:07with a bit higher strikeout rate.
02:08I think that's what he could become potentially
02:10if you look at all the deeper metrics on him.
02:12They are extremely similar.
02:14And I think if you're looking for a pathway
02:16to what Holmes might be as a starter,
02:18it's a Derek Lowe with more Ks,
02:20and that could be really good for the New York Mets.
02:22So I would love for them to go out there
02:24and get one more big starting pitcher,
02:26a Cease, a King, somebody like that.
02:28I don't think they're done.
02:29And I think they know exactly what they're doing,
02:31which is, hey, we're gonna hang tight
02:32and then continue to make the deals we have to.
02:35But the one thing they're not gonna overdo
02:37is overpay for pitching in long-term contracts,
02:40because that has been a huge albatross
02:42on this organization in the past,
02:44and the Stearns regime just is not doing it.
02:46So good on them to have the discipline,
02:47and we'll see what this rotation gives them.
02:49But Juan Soto, that's a game changer.
02:52So you're saying to pay a lot of money
02:56for long-term contracts.
02:58Let's talk about the New York Yankees here
02:59and what they've done.
03:01They had Max Fried on an eight-year deal.
03:03Devin Williams comes over in a trade,
03:05Cody Bellinger, Paul Goldschmidt.
03:07I think there's a ton of potential here.
03:08I'm really excited to see how the Martians bat,
03:10what it does to this lineup.
03:12I wanna see if fan favorites like Peraza get playing time.
03:15I think the entire staff could all take a next step
03:17as Cole takes a step backwards.
03:19I think the pen is good.
03:20Talk about the Yankees.
03:21Take us out.
03:22Yeah, look, I think eight years is a lot for Max Fried.
03:25I think it's too many for Max Fried,
03:26a guy who's already had some iffy arm issues
03:28in the last couple of years.
03:30What they did was they spread the wealth.
03:31They said, okay, we can't pay Soto 50, 60 million a year,
03:35so we'll spread the money around.
03:36And that was smart because the Yankees
03:38did lack a lot of depth last year.
03:40Goldschmidt, I'm not sure what's left in the tank.
03:42I gotta say the numbers are not very encouraging,
03:44so that's not great.
03:45Can he help himself by going to Yankee Stadium?
03:47Sure.
03:48And then potentially Devin Williams
03:50at the back of his bullpen, that's a huge help
03:51because that was a big deficit for the Yankees in 2024.
03:55So if Fried stays healthy
03:56and Cody Bellinger can have a renaissance,
03:59the fact that he plays first base and outfield
04:01gives you a little bit of flexibility there too.
04:03So I like what the Yankees have done.
