00:00Well, it's been a pretty bad few weeks for the UK's Conservative Party. Prime Minister
00:09Rishi Sunak's Tories have had a very resounding defeat in two recent Parliament by-elections.
00:16And the reason why this is important is that these were seats that were actually Conservative
00:19strongholds which have now been won by the Labour Party. One of these seats, in fact,
00:24has been a Conservative seat ever since its inception in 1931. And the very fact that
00:30the Labour Party has now breached these erstwhile Tory strongholds indicates just how unhappy
00:37Conservative voters are with their own party at the moment. It comes at a time when the
00:42UK is facing a cost of living crisis, trouble in the economy overall, the fact that the
00:47healthcare system is under pressure and is on the brink of collapse, transport workers,
00:52nurses, doctors, everyone's been routinely going on strike. And the fact is that while
00:57Rishi Sunak has brought in a degree of stability since his year or so in office, at the same
01:02time, the anger against the Conservative Party clearly runs deep. It's also a remarkable
01:08turnout for the Labour Party and for Keir Starmer, who until a couple of years ago were
01:12being written off in all national polls, and today they have a decisive lead over the Conservatives.
01:18It appears, for the moment, that the Conservatives are heading for a big defeat in the general
01:23elections.
