In the crucial New Hampshire primary earlier this year in the United States, a voice purportedly of US President Joe Biden was calling Democratic voters over the phone and telling them to stay at home because “your vote makes a difference in November, not this Tuesday.” It was fake.

Using artificial intelligence voice cloning technology, the fake message of Biden went viral. But it was detected and shut down. This is election year in many key democracies around the world. India, the United States and the United Kingdom, are among the countries holding elections in 2024.

00:00With more than 50 countries around the world holding general elections this year, the problem
00:09of deep fakes that are generated through artificial intelligence has become a huge issue.
00:15We've already seen that in the US presidential election, for example, where a fake audio
00:19message of President Joe Biden went viral back in January during the New Hampshire primary,
00:24where Democratic voters suddenly got a call from Biden saying that they didn't need to
00:30come out and vote for the primary, it was their vote in November that mattered and not
00:33at that time.
00:34Of course, it was called out and a full investigation was done.
00:37But the point is that these are very lifelike images, audio, etc.
00:43And this is a big problem that we're seeing as far as disinformation is concerned in many
00:47countries that are holding elections.
00:48In the UK as well, there is great concern about this.
00:51But the question is that while tech companies, including Chad GPT, have said that they're
00:57going to take steps or they are taking steps to ensure that their technology is not misused.
01:03It's also true that implementation on the ground has been very, very patchy.
01:07So in some cases, particularly when it comes to the US elections, while these companies
01:12seem to be acting with much more alacrity, that's probably not the case when it comes
01:17to cases outside the United States.
01:19And many of these companies are frankly, basically American.
01:22Therefore, the question lies that are they doing enough to clamp down on this problem
01:27outside the borders of the US?
01:30The EU has taken a very tough stand and has taken a stand which I believe other countries
01:35should follow in putting together a law now, which it has just passed, which will be implemented
01:41later this year, that identifies different categories of, you know, artificial intelligence
01:48as high risk, low risk, limited risk, etc.
01:51And, you know, what kind of scrutiny they will face depending on the risk factor, deep
01:56fakes are also listed there.
01:59So that is something that is important because you are cracking down on disinformation and
02:05yet you're not stifling innovation.
02:06Ultimately, all of this, of course, will be put to the test.
02:10But tech companies need to be held far more accountable for what can go wrong with AI,
02:16particularly in election year, as I said, in more than 50 countries.
