Stoney and Jansen go through the list of probable cap casualty cuts around the league and decide whether the Lions should look to sign them or not.
Transcript
00:00Uh, but because of the salary cap that we have in this sport, uh, there are what they
00:05call cap casualties.
00:08Players who will be cut, and usually they're cut, you know, shortly, uh, or a lot of times
00:15they're announced, but they call it like June releases or whatever.
00:18Right, June 1st.
00:19Yes, because of cap ramifications.
00:20I don't understand all the machinations of that, but.
00:23Well, it basically cuts it in half.
00:25Just to give you the, the Cliff Notes version of it, it's a June 1st designation.
00:29So you can cut now that way, whoever it is, and let's just use Aaron Rogers.
00:34They've talked about him.
00:35He'll probably be a June 1st designation.
00:36So he can be a guy that can get into free agency and sign another contract.
00:41But it, it does it instead of taking a $50 million cap hit this year, they basically
00:47could take 25 this year and push 25 of it down to next year and split up the difference.
00:53All right.
00:54So I want to give you some guys who are going to be cup, cup, cap, cap casualties.
01:03Some obviously will have no, I don't think the Lions would be interested in, but you
01:07never know.
01:08Here we go.
01:09Kirk Cousins.
01:10No, they don't need him.
01:12Another quarterback, Derek Carr.
01:14No.
01:15And both of these guys on Monday, we did the, you know, uh, the quarterback carousel, and
01:20I think there'll be in the market and it'll be interesting to see if anybody wants to,
01:26ideally for both of these teams, they would trade them instead of cut them.
01:31But, and it might be a possibility for Carr.
01:34His contract's not quite what Kirk Cousins is.
01:37I think Kirk Cousins is going to have to be one where they just cut them and, and he'll
01:40be a June 1st and they'll just have to bite the bullet on that one.
01:43The next guy I'm going to mention, he would fit in with the quote unquote culture and
01:49grit and all that kind of stuff.
01:51I just don't see them needing him per se, and that'd be Kyle Juszczyk, the fullback
01:56for San Francisco.
01:57Oh, he would be, yeah, I mean, he would definitely fit.
02:00He's a tremendous player and I'd be surprised if he doesn't rework his deal or they don't
02:07rework his deal.
02:08He's such a big part of that offense in San Francisco.
02:11Um, you know, I just, I would be surprised if he ends up becoming available, but I mean,
02:18yeah, culture fit, but I don't necessarily know that that's an expenditure that they
02:23need.
02:24All right.
02:25I'm going to give you, uh, some receivers here.
02:27Okay.
02:28Okay.
02:29Devontae Adams.
02:30No, too much drama.
02:32Tyler Lockett, um, he's 32 years old, so this would be one that I would kick the tires on
02:42because who do they got now?
02:44We've got, um, Jackson Smith and Jigba and obviously, um, DK Metcalf.
02:51So he's, he's that third receiver.
02:54He's $31 million of a cap hit for this year, right?
02:59For, for the Seattle Seahawks, but if he's cut, whoever signs him is not going to take
03:04on any part of that.
03:05Right.
03:06I know.
03:07But so he's set to be there.
03:08The fourth largest cap hit of any was any receiver.
03:11And he's their number three, number three.
03:14And I think he would be a great number three.
03:15It just depend on what you would have to pay him to, um, to be that Josh Reynolds type
03:21of receiver.
03:22Right.
03:23You're assuming that Tim Patrick probably won't be back, right?
03:26I doubt it, but yeah, you know, so they're going to, they're going to be looking for
03:29a number three.
03:30What about Cooper Cupp?
03:32Again, this is, they wanted to trade them and I don't think they're going to find a
03:37trade partner.
03:38So if they cut him, would I rather have Cupp over Lockett?
03:41Yes.
03:42It's going to cost more than Lockett Christian Kirk for the Jaguars.
03:47No.
03:48I mean, he got a ridiculous deal to begin with.
03:51Was it 72 million over four years?
03:53Yeah.
03:54It's just, he's been hurt.
03:56Hasn't been productive.
03:57Yes.
03:58Tight end lines.
03:59Don't need everything.
04:00Everything.
04:01We're going to probably cut.
04:02All right.
04:03Here's an interesting one.
04:04Jack Conklin.
04:05I have to tackle Cleveland.
04:06Now, obviously with Sewell and Decker, you probably don't need a tackle.
04:10No.
04:12But you do need depth at that position.
04:15I don't know.
04:16How old is Jack Conklin right now?
04:17Doesn't say.
04:20But so it would all depend on where he is in his career.
04:24Could he be a swing tackle that could back up both?
04:28He's 30 years old.
04:30So he is approaching that point of his career where he might be a nice piece to add depending
04:37on how much he would cost as a tackle that could back.
04:40Because, I mean, Decker didn't make it through the entire year last year.
04:45And we've had really nice health with Penny Sewell.
04:49At some point, he's going to get dinged up as well.
04:51Do you think the Lions should go after any defensive tackles?
04:55Now, McNeil probably won't start this season.
04:58You got a reader.
05:01There's only one that I would like them to explore if he's cut.
05:06And I don't know if he's on this list.
05:07Okay.
05:08Obviously, being tapped into Washington, I've heard that Jonathan Allen might be.
05:14He's on the list.
05:15Okay.
05:16So if he is...
05:17He was my next one.
05:18If he's cut and he enters free agency.
05:19I know his productivity last year was a little bit down, and that's one of the things we
05:23talked about, both of those defensive tackles.
05:27And the fact that they weren't great stopping the run, I think alongside Lee McNeil with
05:32DJ Reader, Hutch, I think it would be a great addition.
05:36I'm not that familiar with this guy's work, David Onyemada of the Atlanta Falcons.
05:42It says here, dropping Grady Jarrett, also a possibility for a Falcon organization that's
05:46currently almost $12 million overdrawn as his departure would free up $16 million.
05:53He's a run-stuffing nose tackle.
05:55That would be a luxury to have a third.
05:58And you're kind of hoping, praying that...
06:01What's his face?
06:02Project Martin develops into something?
06:03Well, keep praying.
06:04Yeah, I know.
06:06I know you're praying, man.
06:07That's right.
06:08That face.
06:09Oh, Lord, please make Project Martin a good player, please.
06:22So this one kind of goes along the lines of, would you rather have him or Jonathan Allen
06:26if they're both available?
06:27Would you rather have Lockett or Kupp if both are available?
06:32Jonathan Allen's going to cost more.
06:34Cooper Kupp is going to cost more.
06:36But would I rather have Cooper Kupp as a number three receiver?
06:40Absolutely.
06:41Edge Rusher, there's two here with very familiar names.
06:46One is even older than the other.
06:48One is one former Ohio State Buckeye, Joseph Bosa.
06:53No, he's just...
06:57Availability.
06:58Yeah.
06:59I mean, as soon as he walks out of the locker room, I don't know if he slips and falls or
07:03trips, whatever it is.
07:05He's just always hurt.
07:06I would hope they would cut Khalil Mack and Lions would...
07:10I think Khalil might be available, yeah.
07:13And the other one is Vaughn Miller.
07:17Too old.
07:18Too old, too banged up.
07:21Situational pass rusher.
07:22No, no.
07:23I just don't...
07:24I wouldn't trust that he'd be available when you need him most.
07:26Do we need a corner?
07:28Yes.
07:29Okay.
07:30He's the one who's really, really good, but he showed a lot of drama last year.
07:37But he might be motivated if he gets cut, especially because it's in the division to
07:43sign with somebody like the Lions.
07:45Jair Alexander.
07:49I would explore it.
07:50I think he's going to cost more than the Lions really want to pay.
07:55Given the option, all things being equal, would I rather have Jair Alexander or Carlton
08:01Davis?
08:02I'll take Jair Alexander.
08:03Yes.
08:04Although he was injured a lot of this year, too.
08:06He was.
08:07Yeah.
08:08How about Jamal Dean of Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
08:09You're talking corners.
08:10Yeah.
08:11I mean, if we're going to explore the Tampa Bay corner market we did with Carlton Davis,
08:16why not Jamal Dean?
08:17Yeah.
08:18He's a pretty good player.
08:19He's a good player.
08:20Solid player.
08:21Yes.
08:22His cap is $15.1 million, so they'd be willing to maybe cut him.
08:26And the other one on this list is somebody we talked to before, I talked about before,
08:30and that's Darius Slay.
08:31Yeah.
08:32And this would really come down to how long does he want, what's he looking to get out
08:37of the last few years of his career?
08:40He definitely wants to play one more year.
08:41I don't know if he wants to play more than that.
08:43Well, so he's got, he hasn't been cut yet.
08:46He's got one year left on his deal with Philly, and if he is, then yeah, I would definitely
08:51find out, and I'd be willing to go two years with him.
08:55Those conversations behind closed doors, because if he retires in the middle of the contract,
09:01and we've kind of gone down this road different times in the Lions history, the cap hits not
09:09quite as much as if you cut him.
09:12So you could explore different ways to be creative with a contract for Darius Slay.
09:17Yes.
09:18Who do you think the Lions are going to start cutting?
09:22Who are they going to ax?
09:23Yeah.
09:24Well, I mean, they've had, there's a lot of guys that were on prove-it deals.
09:29That's kind of the bread home specialty.
09:31Right.
09:32But they were one-year deals usually, right?
09:34So they're not under contract.
09:35They're not under contract to be cut.
09:37So I mean, I guess I'd have to look at- What about Glasgow?
09:42It all depends on who's available in free agency.
09:45Who can they get at that guard spot?
09:48Do they want to pay more than they're paying him?
09:50Will they get more for what they're paying for?
09:52And they might have to get a guard to replace Zietler possibly too.
09:55Right.
09:56Because Zietler's a free agent.
09:57Yes.
09:58So again, it depends on how many guys they want to add to that.
10:04Or are they good with going with Christian Mahogany at one and Glasgow at the other,
10:11but then getting a swing guard as a backup?
