00:00In Boronan City, Eastern Summer, trophies are more than just awards.
00:04They tell a story of transformation, turning discarded wood into meaningful symbols of victory.
00:10V. Tolentino Gumban of Philippine Information Agency, Eastern Summer, tells us more.
00:18During the recent Eastern Visayas Regional Schools Press Conference and the Regional
00:23Festival of Talents, winners did not take home the usual factory-made trophies.
00:29Instead, they received handcrafted awards made from repurposed wood, thanks to an innovative
00:35project led by Edgar Tenasas, OIC Schools Division Superintendent of Borongan City,
00:42the host of the two regional events alongside the City Government of Borongan.
00:58Tenasas personally collected abandoned wood from barangay schools, then worked with a local
01:13furniture maker to shape them into a one-of-a-kind trophy. Each piece carries a deeper meaning.
01:19The intricate carvings represent Borongan slush forests and rich biodiversity,
01:25while the hands in the design symbolize protection, honoring nature while lifting
01:30up student achievement. For the winners, these awards are more than just prizes.
01:35They stand as reminders that creativity and sustainability go hand in hand.
01:40Beyond the competitions, the impact of this initiative continues.
01:44Inside the Borongan City Division Office, wooden artworks made from the same repurposed materials
01:50served as a lasting legacy of the project.
01:54Through this initiative, Borongan City proves that success isn't just about winning.
02:00It's also about making a difference. And sometimes, the greatest achievement
02:05doesn't come from what is new, but from what was once forgotten.
02:09From the Philippine Information Agency, Eastern Samar, Vito Minkino Gumban, Balitang Pambansang.
