Newcastle United lost 2-0 away to Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Transcript
00:00Liverpool 2 Newcastle United 0 Kia at Anfield this evening. The same old story for Newcastle
00:08on this ground. They haven't won Kia for 30 years and yeah they never looked like ending
00:12that tonight. I think in the main Newcastle competed well but never looked like scoring
00:19and giving away two very poor goals. Liverpool really weren't out of first or second Kia.
00:27It was a victory that they sort of coasted to in the end. I think that's the biggest
00:32disappointment for Newcastle as they weren't able to really lay a glove on Liverpool. It's
00:38hard when you don't have Alexander Isak available. That was a big blow for Newcastle at the start
00:42of the game to be without their top goal scorer, the man who scored 21 goals this season. He
00:48was left out with a slight drawing issue. The good news on him is that it doesn't seem
00:53to be too serious. I hope to get him back pretty quickly. He was with the squad and
00:57I would suggest it was a very late call on Isak but they ultimately made the decision
01:01not to play him. Callum Wilson came into the start XI. His first Premier League start since
01:08May. A long time and I think that rush he has probably showed for Callum Wilson. Newcastle's
01:13best chance came through Callum Wilson in the first half. He had an opportunity to make
01:17a 1-1. He was set in behind by Dan Byrne. 1-1 to Alisson and he sort of scuffed the
01:24ball wide if you like. It didn't make a very good connection. He should have really curled
01:28in the net but didn't do so and flew past the post. That was Newcastle's best chance
01:34of the night. He went behind Thierry in the 12th minute to Dominic Sobozolai. Just a really
01:41poor goal to concede there. Sandro Tannoli loses the run of Sobozolai. Sobozolai takes
01:47his shot, goes through the legs of Tannoli and Dan Byrne in the air. That's 1-0 after
01:5112 minutes. Gives you a mountain to climb. Don't be conceding early goals here. And then
01:57the hour mark. It was Alexis McAllister who made it 2-0 again. Sandro Tannoli who I actually
02:04thought did okay at night but two costly moments for him. Giving the ball away in midfield.
02:08Liverpool break forward. Mo Salah on the right hand side finds McAllister in the box
02:13and he flashes the ball past Nick Pope. Eddie Howe made changes in the second half to try
02:21and impact things. Bringing the likes of Willa Sula, Harvey Barnes. It didn't have the desired
02:28effect. Liverpool coasted to victory in the end. Familiar tale here at Anfield. Will Newcastle
02:36ever win here? I'm starting to think that's really doubtful. 30 years without a win here
02:40and they never performed well here. Okay they went bad tonight. It wasn't the worst performance
02:47in the world but it wasn't a performance that was going to beat Liverpool who are the runaway
02:52Premier League leaders. Went 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League tonight.
02:56So you've got to give credit to Liverpool. Newcastle, this is a tough place to come at
03:01the best times but Liverpool are flying high and look Newcastle season won't be defined on
03:07what's happened tonight but it's just disappointing that they didn't quite compete in that final third
03:14and of course a giveaway to really disappointing goals. So yeah Newcastle quickly put this one
03:21behind them. Of course it was a dress rehearsal for the Carabao Cup final. Hopefully Newcastle
03:27have Alex and Isak back for that. They should do given that his injury, according to Eddie Gough,
03:33isn't too serious. So yeah the tensions. I thought I'd switch in towards the Carabao Cup final but
03:40before that Newcastle have got two very important games. Brighton and Hove Albion are changing
03:44their spot on Sunday for a place in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup and then they go to
03:48West Ham on a Monday night before Wembley and yeah it's a big two games coming up for Newcastle.
03:56Two sides. If you had a night duel all again at Wembley, a trophy castle could come out on top
04:01that day but yeah 10 years without a win against Liverpool. There was signs tonight that Newcastle
04:08can't compete at Liverpool but they're going to have to perform a lot better
04:12particularly in the final third if they are to lift the Carabao Cup.
