00:00The following program documents a real homicide case.
00:09The investigation, the pursuit of justice, and the lasting impact on the loved ones left
00:14behind.
00:15We got a lot of blood right here.
00:21This was my first homicide.
00:22I was nervous.
00:23All right, y'all, show me where to walk.
00:26I really didn't have any leads.
00:29We didn't have any ballistics or DNA.
00:32I knew she was kind of hitting the wall.
00:35You don't kill.
00:36You're like a woman.
00:37That's when the game changed.
00:38We had a surviving victim.
00:39I told him, think about your friend.
00:40Either he's landloss, because he's scared, or he's involved.
00:41If Keylon's friend isn't testified, we don't get justice for Keylon.
00:42My main witness could not be found.
00:43And I'm starting trial in less than two hours.
00:44I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:45I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:46I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:47I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:48I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:49I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:50I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:51I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:52I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:53I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:54I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:55I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:56I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:57I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:58I'm going to have to go to jail.
00:59I'm going to have to go to jail.
01:00I'm going to have to go to jail.
01:01I'm going to have to go to jail.
01:02I'm going to have to go to jail.
01:03I'm going to have to go to jail.
01:04I'm going to have to go to jail.
01:05I'm going to have to go to jail.
01:06I'm going to have to go to jail.
01:07I'm going to have to go to jail.
01:08I'm going to have to go to jail.
01:10That's when you take things personal.
01:13You're speaking for the deceased.
01:15This is the story of the fight for justice.
01:19In the weeks, months, and years after the first 48.
01:40On a quiet residential street.
01:43What's your emergency?
01:47I just got gunshot.
01:48I think I've driven up on somebody that might be shot.
01:52Your green is bleeding sir.
01:53Yes, it's incredibly bleeding.
01:56Yeah, it is bleeding.
01:57We already have assistance on the way.
02:06But it's too late, to save him.
02:12From the beginning of my career, I wanted to be in homicide.
02:24My cousin was murdered a little under 20 years ago, and his case is still unsolved to this
02:31day.
02:32I chose to come to homicide because maybe I can communicate with people and hopefully
02:38bring them closure, because my family didn't get that.
02:42We are headed to Maiden Lane.
02:45We'll see what we got.
02:46I was able to shadow other lead detectives on their cases, but this was my first homicide.
02:53I was nervous.
02:54I hope I do everything right.
03:02Good morning.
03:13You got a name on the victim?
03:17Keylon Williams.
03:21Twenty-four-year-old Keylon Jamal Williams worked as a TSA agent while trying to make
03:26it as a musician.
03:28He was the father of two young sons.
03:35Looks like he's just been shot once in the chest.
03:40I'm looking at the blood that's all over here.
03:43I'm looking at his chest.
03:46I still remember my first case.
03:49It was very nerve-wracking, but it's your case, you're in charge, what you say goes.
04:00I think he was shot outside the car.
04:03He was in the sand in the woods.
04:06Yeah.
04:07Maybe this was a robbery.
04:10But it doesn't look like anything had been taken.
04:13So I just really didn't know what to think.
04:17All right, y'all, show me where to walk.
04:20Five cases and two projectiles.
04:30Federal 3-8-0.
04:40Hey, check this out.
04:43Up the hill, a block from Keylon's body.
04:50Wow.
04:51I didn't believe it.
04:53I was hoping that that was going to be the murder weapon.
04:59Then...
05:01He's the only one who's got a homeless guy.
05:03It's time to be an eyewitness.
05:05Oh, really?
05:07Now, my hopes did start getting a little high.
05:20Four hours in.
05:37And that's what I wanted.
05:39Up the hill.
05:49That gave me information to know that there was another person.
05:54But I'm thinking, why is he in his underwear?
06:02This could be a robbery gone bad now.
06:06It made sense.
06:08Sometimes it's a power trip by the suspect.
06:11It's almost like, hey, I'm in charge.
06:14I have control of you.
06:26The gentleman that was running,
06:28I needed to find out who that person was.
06:31Does he know the people that shot Keylon?
06:35Is he involved?
06:43Five hours in.
06:46Lewis and Detective Summer Benton search Keylon's wallet.
06:50Check that out.
06:52Oh.
06:53I was very surprised to see that he had a concealed weapons permit.
06:59And who is Sandra...
07:01That might be who's calling.
07:05I knew that that had to be a girlfriend
07:08or a wife or somebody close to him.
07:11And I'm not gonna lie, I was nervous.
07:18Hello, Sandra?
07:22This is Keylon's wife?
07:24Yes.
07:25Be direct and to the point.
07:28This is Investigator Lewis from Atlanta Police Homicide.
07:32When I introduced myself, she...
07:35she paused, and I think she already knew.
07:39Where's Keylon?
07:43That night, he was supposed to be on his way to perform.
07:46The day Vion was up, he wouldn't go to sleep.
07:49He kept saying he want his daddy.
07:51Normally, Keylon calls me wherever he's going.
07:54But this specific night, Keylon never called.
07:57And then a female answers the phone.
07:59Where are you located right now?
08:02I'm at my house.
08:04Okay, we're getting ready to come out and see you, okay?
08:07Is Keylon okay?
08:09I knew something happened.
08:11Something's wrong with Keylon.
08:13I just could not just tell her the news over the phone.
08:16I needed to see her face to face.
08:18I'll be with you momentarily.
08:20Okay, thank you.
08:22That's horrible.
08:32When I first met Detective Lewis,
08:35I just really wanted to know what was going on.
08:39I felt like we need answers.
08:51It wasn't good.
08:54It's not an easy thing to just go in
08:56and just tell someone that their life is about to change.
09:0013 hours into the investigation...
09:05Mr. Detective Lewis.
09:07...the ballistics results are in.
09:09Okay.
09:11The gun that was found in the bushes,
09:13it was determined that it was actually Keylon's weapon.
09:16And he was not shot with his own weapon?
09:18No.
09:20Keylon's gun doesn't match the casings at the crime scene.
09:23It was found in the bushes.
09:25Keylon's gun doesn't match the casings at the crime scene.
09:29It was that gut-sinking feeling,
09:31like I felt sure that was gonna be the murder weapon.
09:35I knew she was really struggling.
09:37The first case is always the hardest case.
09:40Like, how and who put the gun where it was?
09:44I'm gonna call his wife back, she called.
09:48I was calling you because I'm hearing the last one was him.
09:52I did know who Keylon was out with that night.
09:56When Sandra told me that she possibly knew who Keylon was with,
10:00I was pulled to my breath.
10:12Me and Keylon met in high school.
10:15We got married May 5th, 2014.
10:20Everybody raise your glass up.
10:22Congratulations.
10:27What drew me to Keylon?
10:29He was just funny, he was a class clown.
10:32We just had that bond.
10:36Keylon working for TSA,
10:38getting up 4 o'clock in the morning every morning.
10:41He was always tired.
10:44But when he came home from work,
10:46he always played with the kids.
10:56My brother asked me the end of last year
10:59if he can take my boys for a year
11:01because their dad is not here.
11:03It's things that they need to know as men.
11:09After two months of being away from Sandra,
11:12Davion and Tekevion are back for a visit.
11:18My kids won't be able to know their father,
11:20but I wanted to see him maybe
11:22if I can talk to them about it.
11:24They want to know what happened,
11:28what's all they've been through.
11:30I'm very proud of them.
11:42Keylon's friend, I heard of him.
11:45He was mentioned a few times to me.
11:48They were supposed to be really close.
11:58All right, thank you.
12:03She doesn't have a last name for your guy?
12:05No.
12:07Either he's laying low somewhere
12:09because he's scared,
12:12or he's involved.
12:2035 hours into the investigation,
12:23Keylon's friend comes forward to be interviewed.
12:27Things are starting to look up now.
12:29Like a ray of sunshine.
12:31This could potentially be the break she needed in her case.
12:34My main goal in how to approach Keylon's friend
12:37was as a victim, not a suspect,
12:40to find out what's going on.
12:50Keylon's friend says he got out,
12:52while Keylon stayed in the car to make a call.
12:56He had a random stick.
13:08He says the man took his phone and wallet at gunpoint.
13:26Keylon, Keylon, Keylon, Keylon.
13:41He was terrified.
13:43He was in fear of his life.
13:50Okay, it's two males.
13:52He says there was a getaway driver
13:55He was trying to go to sleep.
13:57I keep thinking about this in my head.
13:59He was actually very hard on himself
14:01because he faulted himself
14:03for not being able to do more.
14:09Something prompted them to shoot
14:11and not run.
14:13When Keylon's friend was explaining
14:15how things transpired,
14:17I can actually visualize it.
14:19He's running down the street,
14:21yelling his name,
14:23and eventually Keylon heard him
14:25and was going for his gun.
14:27The suspect probably saw the gun,
14:29probably took it.
14:31They decided to throw it out the window
14:33when driving off.
14:35If that's the scenario,
14:37they don't really want to get caught
14:39with that guy's gun.
14:41And then by them going up the street,
14:43tossed it right there.
14:45I mean, it made sense.
14:47As the first 48 ticks away.
14:49When I learned that Keylon's friend's
14:51cell phone was taken,
14:53that was a major thing.
14:55So I got a search warrant for his cell phone records.
14:59She just needed that one little piece
15:01of information.
15:03Lewis was definitely discouraged.
15:09For the next few months, the case got cold.
15:13But I made sure I kept in contact
15:15with the family.
15:17I knew that it was frustrating for them.
15:19My kids were going through a lot.
15:21Davion was acting out.
15:23Some days you don't know what to do.
15:25Sandra was saying that
15:27the boys were having such a hard time.
15:29So I asked her,
15:31would you like for me to try and talk to them?
15:43Hi!
15:45My cousin was murdered, so maybe
15:47the loss that I had in my life,
15:49maybe that's what drew me to do it.
16:05He's not coming to get you.
16:07I promise you he's not coming out here.
16:17Do you know why?
16:19I really can't tell you.
16:21Sometimes people do bad things.
16:25Sometimes people do bad things?
16:27Mm-hmm.
16:29And when people do bad things to each other,
16:31sometimes it hurts people.
16:33It was comforting to me to know
16:35that she was there,
16:37not just as her being a detective.
16:39That's kind of what happened to your daddy.
16:41They heard him and he went to heaven.
16:43I don't know why he went to heaven.
16:47Well, because God needed him home.
16:57I definitely felt horrible
16:59for those children.
17:01I told them
17:03that I'm going to do my best to find out
17:05who did this to their father.
17:13Three months
17:15since Keylon's shooting death.
17:17I think I got some good news
17:19for HRAC.
17:21Detective Lewis was feeling the pressure,
17:23and then we got the robbery victims'
17:25cell phone records.
17:27She ran with it.
17:29It just blew up.
17:31The phone was used
17:33about half an hour
17:35after your victim was shot.
17:37This is Keylon's friend's phone.
17:39So, of course,
17:41he's not making these phone calls
17:43because he doesn't have his phone anymore.
17:45Apparently, one of the suspects
17:47actually made them.
17:49He called one number
17:51of the victim's cell phone
17:53and the victim's cell phone
17:55was turned off.
17:57The victim's cell phone
17:59he called one number
18:01a lot.
18:03Having extended conversations
18:05that afternoon.
18:07That was the best news that I've gotten in months.
18:13I was calling to see if I could
18:15maybe come by to speak with you.
18:17Okay.
18:21I just needed to find out
18:23who was this person that possibly
18:25stole the phone.
18:27That's what I'm calling knows.
18:29Hopefully, they'd be willing to do
18:31the right thing and tell us
18:33what they know.
18:39I'm going to go back to
18:41July the 3rd.
18:43My choice
18:45to interview her in a car
18:47was so she could feel comfortable
18:49to let her know that I'm not here
18:51to arrest you.
18:53You got a phone call about maybe
18:55half in the morning.
18:57Who called you?
19:01She gave me the name.
19:03Oh, my God.
19:09There were actually two victims.
19:11One is living
19:13and one is dead.
19:15Oh, my God.
19:25When she said that,
19:27my heart just leaped like,
19:29oh, yes.
19:31Who's Monte?
19:35The witness, who is a friend of Fernando Hogan,
19:37gives Lewis contact information
19:39for Monte.
19:41And then he told you about...
19:45that he might have killed somebody.
19:49Getting the suspects' names,
19:51I was overjoyed.
19:53I couldn't get back to headquarters quick enough
19:55to find out their identities.
20:01It's Fernando.
20:03Fernando Hogan is 28 years old
20:05and works for a moving company.
20:09Assault on a female?
20:11Wow. Mr. Hogan.
20:15Let's see if I can find the other one.
20:19Montez...
20:23Lamontez Hinton.
20:25Lamontez is 22.
20:27He went to high school
20:29in Atlanta.
20:31Wow. It's going on and on.
20:35A lot of violent stuff going on
20:37in his criminal history.
20:39He has prior convictions for theft
20:41and burglary
20:43and is in jail for unrelated charges.
20:47Arrested in a blue Dodge...
20:55The vehicle that he was driving
20:57when he was arrested
20:59was actually the same
21:01make and model and color
21:03of the vehicle that
21:05Pilon's friend described.
21:07Hi. It's Detective Lewis.
21:09Lewis requests that Lamontez
21:11be transported to headquarters.
21:17At that point, I researched the owner
21:19of the vehicle
21:21and went to go and meet her.
21:23Okay. I'm going to
21:25jog your memory a little bit.
21:27Who else drives your car
21:29besides you?
21:31Lamontez.
21:33Okay. On July the 3rd,
21:35was he in possession of your car?
21:37Just tell me the truth.
21:39He stole my keys that night
21:41and I had to be at work at 5 that morning
21:43so we were having a big argument.
21:45My friend,
21:47that was the break that I need.
21:49I'm developing probable cause
21:51but I didn't actually have it.
21:55While the search is on for Fernando,
21:57Lamontez has arrived at headquarters.
21:59The goal going into
22:01this interview was to present
22:03what information and evidence we have
22:05in hopes that they realize
22:07oh boy, maybe I should talk
22:09and cooperate.
22:37It can be frustrating.
22:39Why would you not want to talk to me?
22:41If I wasn't involved, I'd be like
22:43I need to clear my name.
22:45I think we're going down the right path here.
22:47So we're going to take him back to the jail now.
22:51I still had to build my case
22:53to where I can go ahead and make an arrest.
22:57I'll just go ahead and put a line up together
23:03before I can type up warrants.
23:05We needed Keylon's friend to confirm
23:07that this is the people who robbed him
23:09and killed Keylon.
23:15He picked out both suspects
23:19without a shadow of a doubt, almost instantaneously.
23:23Keylon's friend identifies Lamontez
23:25as the shooter
23:27and Fernando as the driver.
23:29That right there is more than enough
23:31probable cause.
23:33Finally, four months
23:35into the investigation.
23:37Fernando Hogan was picked up
23:39last night.
23:41Fernando had been arrested on unrelated
23:43charges of giving a false name
23:45to a police officer.
23:53Hello.
23:55Hey, how are you?
23:57Fine, how are you doing?
23:59Sandra's reaction to me telling her
24:01that we got the suspect,
24:03I think she cried.
24:09And that was...
24:11I'm about to cry myself.
24:15I knew it wouldn't bring Keylon back,
24:19but it was a relief.
24:21I'm going to go do a surprise
24:23visit to Fernando
24:25at Paulding County Jail.
24:35If he was just a driver,
24:37he wasn't a shooter,
24:39he could have maybe pleaded to a lesser charge
24:41and testify against the shooter.
24:43We had the opportunity
24:45to complain on something
24:47because I have you identified
24:49as the driver
24:51of the giveaway car
24:53of a homicide.
25:13...
25:19I don't even know what y'all are talking about.
25:21Are you ready to spend
25:23the rest of your natural life
25:25in prison for a trigger
25:27that you did not pull?
25:31I was at work that day.
25:33I work for the professional movement.
25:35He did give us an alibi,
25:37which I was very shocked about.
25:39But
25:41I'm going to check it.
25:47I was calling about Fernando Hogan.
25:49Do you have any documentation
25:51on July the 3rd?
26:01Was Fernando with you about 2.30 in the morning?
26:07That's all I needed to know.
26:11There goes his alibi.
26:13I actually wanted to throw confetti in the air,
26:15like, oh my God, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
26:17Alrighty.
26:19Lamontez and
26:21Fernando are charged with
26:23murder.
26:25I'm not going to lie, I was a little nervous
26:27when I sent over my full complete case
26:29file to the Fulton County
26:31DA's office
26:33because it was one of my first cases
26:35and you don't want to miss anything.
26:41In this case,
26:43we didn't have any
26:45ballistics, we didn't have any
26:47DNA, we didn't have
26:49any type of scientific
26:51evidence, but we had
26:53a surviving victim
26:55and those are always
26:57powerful witnesses,
26:59but we were having a really hard time
27:01locating Keylon's friend.
27:03I needed my investigator to find him.
27:05My job in the
27:07DA's office was to work
27:09on high profile cases,
27:11locating witnesses.
27:13I don't want to show my face because
27:15a lot of times the type of people that I
27:17was dealing with and looking for,
27:19I don't want to know what I look like.
27:21His friend, he didn't want
27:23to meet with us.
27:25So I told my investigator, like, we can
27:27try to regroup and figure out another plan.
27:29Recordings of the police
27:31interviews are inadmissible as evidence,
27:33so Griffin needs witnesses
27:35to testify in court.
27:37But a lot of people
27:39just don't like to be involved in the criminal
27:41justice system. They don't want to come and
27:43testify.
27:49That witness, for one, has
27:51disappeared.
27:53But we have other witnesses
27:55that we ended up
27:57being able to locate
27:59Monte's friend and Fernando's
28:01friend.
28:03I'm listening to the interview between
28:05Steve Lewis and Monte's friend.
28:15So
28:17this part of the statement was
28:19extremely helpful because
28:21she gives their M.O., like how
28:23they take off their clothes, which is exactly
28:25what happened.
28:28But
28:30when we first made contact with her,
28:32she was saying that she didn't want to talk.
28:34She was a very hostile witness in this.
28:36So we went to the apartment
28:38and knocked on the door.
28:40And she opened
28:42the door. Then she tried to slam it
28:44back. So I stuck my foot
28:46on the door to push it back.
28:48And we served her the subpoena.
28:52Even with all of that, we
28:54didn't know what to do.
28:56Even with all of that, we were not confident
28:58that Monte's friend was
29:00still going to show up for court.
29:02We needed to make sure we had
29:04Keylon's friend available and ready
29:06to testify in this case.
29:08Time's getting closer and closer
29:10for me to start this trial.
29:12I just really didn't know
29:14what to do.
29:16Keylon's friend
29:18was very active on social media.
29:20So what
29:22we ended up doing was creating
29:24a profile of a young female
29:26of a stock photo.
29:28And we sent him a direct message
29:30saying, hey, we think you're cute.
29:32You want to meet up somewhere?
29:34He responded, like, instantly.
29:36And we set up a time
29:38to meet him at a local restaurant.
29:40We walk in
29:42together and we're like, hey, are you
29:44Keylon's friend? I told him
29:46we're here to interview you.
29:48You have been avoiding us
29:50and running from us.
29:52I got you.
29:54He was in total shock.
29:56I had to try and
29:58get him to trust us.
30:00I told him, just think about your friend.
30:02Your friend can't talk now.
30:04He's talking through us.
30:06That's when he started telling everything.
30:08He opened up
30:10a lot about how
30:12Keylon wasn't the type of guy to be in trouble
30:14and how he shouldn't
30:16be dead.
30:18He really loved that guy. I think he felt like
30:20he deserted his friend.
30:22A lot of guilt.
30:24He cried and
30:26he was like, I'm going to be there for my
30:28friend. I'm going to testify.
30:30Monte's friend,
30:32Fernando's friend,
30:34and Keylon's friend,
30:36those were the three essential witnesses
30:38for the case.
30:40So we were ready to go.
30:42It was very important for me to
30:44be at the trial. I was
30:46still hurt, but I wanted
30:48to know details on what
30:50happened.
30:54The morning of Lamontez and
30:56Fernando's trial.
30:58I get a call from
31:00the lead investigator stating that
31:02my main witness, Keylon's friend,
31:04could not be found.
31:06And I'm starting trial in
31:08less than two hours.
31:18Keylon has seen his boys.
31:20I think he will be very proud of them.
31:24Hey, boys.
31:26Hey.
31:28What's up?
31:30I bought some old stuff from your dad.
31:32Want to look at it?
31:34People sent these letters to y'all
31:36after your dad's death.
31:38Let me see.
31:40Atlanta City Council.
31:44Can I keep this?
31:46Can you keep what?
31:48The earrings.
31:50We'll have to see.
31:52I don't know.
31:54I don't know.
31:56I don't know.
31:58I don't know.
32:00I don't know.
32:02We'll have to see.
32:04It takes a lot for a child to
32:06want to strive knowing this
32:08is what happened. This was my life and this
32:10is what I went through.
32:12Look at my dad's ID.
32:14I have avoided talking to the boys about it
32:16for all these years
32:18because I don't really have
32:20answers.
32:22That's the card he gave you?
32:24Yeah, that's his card.
32:26I know
32:28it hurts.
32:34You got any questions?
32:36Y'all want to know anything?
32:40How many times
32:42did he get shot?
32:46He got shot twice.
32:50Why did he get
32:52healed?
32:54Why did he get healed?
32:56That I don't know. I still can't answer that.
32:58I don't know.
33:06We just wish he was here.
33:24The first day of Fernando Hogan
33:26and Lamontess Hinton's trial.
33:30If we did not find
33:32Keylon's friend, the problem was
33:34mine.
33:36It just threw things in disarray
33:38at the very last minute.
33:42Was he afraid of what the people in the neighborhood
33:44were going to say about him? Yeah, he was.
33:46Did he fear for his life?
33:48Yes.
33:50We had to go find him.
33:52I don't believe
33:54he's running from us.
33:56I said, something happened.
33:58Give me the time
34:00to locate him.
34:04At 9.30
34:06I was scheduled to do my opening
34:08and I really don't have time to rewrite it.
34:10Anything gathered
34:12from Keylon's friend.
34:14I can't talk about that evidence
34:16because he's not here.
34:18She said, what am I going to do?
34:20I said, I want you to put additional witnesses
34:22up.
34:24She said, okay.
34:26The fact that there were more witnesses,
34:28this was the saving grace to this case.
34:34I called Fernando's friend
34:36but she completely changed her story.
34:38I asked her,
34:40did he tell you that he had robbed
34:42somebody?
34:44Her response was, no, he didn't say that.
34:46He said that somebody
34:48was trying to rob him.
34:50It shocked me.
34:52It shocked me because I knew exactly what she said to us.
34:54Did she get a witness stand and do that?
34:56She tried to make it seem
34:58like it was Keylon
35:00and his friend that were the robbers
35:02and not the two defendants.
35:04Griffin asks Fernando's friend
35:06to read the transcript of her interview
35:08with Lewis out loud
35:10for the jury.
35:12But the defense pushes back
35:14because the original interview
35:16was omitted as evidence.
35:24This is where Keylon
35:26and his friend were parked before they were robbed.
35:28The defendants came
35:30from this way to approach
35:32them.
35:34Keylon's friend was already outside of the car
35:36and once the robbery
35:38occurred, he ran
35:40that way towards Bonaventure
35:42after they had stripped him
35:44after they shot Keylon.
35:46So if he was
35:48the one doing the shooting or doing the
35:50robbing of them, why was he the one
35:52without any clothes on? Why was he the one running?
35:54He was asking for help,
35:56asking people to use their phone to call
35:58911.
36:00It was heartbreaking to hear
36:02because, yes, this is your
36:04friend, but they're also killers.
36:06If
36:08this was done to a family member
36:10of yours, you would want
36:12the person to be convicted
36:14and take responsibility
36:16for their actions.
36:18But then there was another witness.
36:20Montez's friend could
36:22talk about the car that she owned.
36:24She can talk about how he
36:26was late returning the car.
36:28But she wasn't cooperative by any
36:30means.
36:32You get this witness up there
36:34that's trying to take back
36:36everything she already said.
36:38I mean, I got a death stare.
36:40It was a case of amnesia.
36:42I think because she didn't want
36:44to have to hurt Montez.
36:46At the end of
36:48day one of this trial,
36:50I was upset.
36:52But that's when things changed.
36:54The game changed.
36:56Keylon's friend
36:58had been arrested
37:00in another county in Georgia.
37:02He decided he wanted to go break
37:04in a car. The Sheriff's Department
37:06agreed to go pick him up and bring him to the
37:08station.
37:10I was on edge because I still didn't know
37:12what Keylon's friend was going to say
37:14when he got on the stand.
37:16His behavior had been so erratic.
37:18If Keylon's friend doesn't testify
37:20about what actually happened,
37:22Montez and Fernando
37:24get acquitted.
37:26And we don't get justice for Keylon.
37:38My plan for the second day
37:40of trial is to get
37:42Keylon's friend to talk about
37:44the night of the event.
37:46He just had to tell it the way it really
37:48transpired out there.
37:50That's what we need to win this case.
37:52He was very scared
37:54of retaliation from testifying
37:56in court.
37:58But he stood up and he did the right
38:00thing. He did right by his friend.
38:02I was relieved
38:04that I'm expecting the defense attorneys
38:06to do a vigorous cross because
38:08now they get to say
38:10that basically it was a robbery
38:12gone wrong.
38:14The defense claims that Keylon and his friend
38:16were the robbers,
38:18not Fernando and LaMontez.
38:20What the defense
38:22harped on was something that
38:24Keylon's friend told
38:26Detective Lewis.
38:28Let me just say this. Have you all been
38:30doing things together
38:32that you shouldn't be doing?
38:34He said
38:36they were about to do a robbery.
38:38The defense argued
38:40that they were out doing robberies that day.
38:42According
38:44to the defense, it was Keylon's
38:46friend who shot Keylon
38:48accidentally.
38:50That's when
38:52you take things personal.
38:54You're speaking for the deceased.
38:56And so it's
38:58insulting when they try to blame
39:00someone who cannot get up and speak
39:02for themselves.
39:04But the defense conveniently
39:06left out the rest of
39:08Keylon's friend's statement.
39:18He says
39:20Keylon was a good person.
39:22He was a great father.
39:24He came from a good home.
39:26I know the street.
39:28He ain't a street person.
39:30At the end of the day,
39:32sometimes I feel like it should have been me
39:34rather than him.
39:38It was just a relief to know that
39:40he was really Keylon's friend.
39:42The whole time, I thought it was something
39:44he was covering up.
39:46But he did the right thing.
39:48He's emotional. He's
39:50teary-eyed. And then you have
39:52the defendants sitting
39:54at the table, and
39:56they're smirking. They're
39:58smiling.
40:00The jury leaves
40:02to deliberate.
40:10Waiting
40:12all weekend to get a verdict.
40:14I just wanted to hurry up and know.
40:16It was a holiday,
40:18and so we had
40:20Friday, evening, Saturday,
40:22Sunday, and Monday
40:24to sit and think about what was going to be
40:26the outcome of the case.
40:28I can't eat.
40:30I can't drink. I can't do anything.
40:38The jury came back, and they returned
40:40the verdict of
40:42guilty for a malice murder for Montae
40:44and
40:46felony murder for Fernando.
40:50I didn't feel sorry for anybody.
40:52I wanted
40:54them to never see the light of day.
40:58My victim's family
41:00got the justice that they deserve.
41:02I didn't experience that with my cousin.
41:04Maybe
41:06because I have gone through things in my life,
41:08I just don't stand
41:10for things like that.
41:12Right is right, and wrong is wrong.
41:24It's been nine years
41:26since Kevon has been gone.
41:30It still feels new.
41:32My boys,
41:34they have their days.
41:36We're all in counseling.
41:38I think talking to somebody
41:40helps. We just take it
41:42day by day.
41:44Kevion is 11 years old,
41:46and he's been in the hospital
41:48for a year and a half.
41:50We just take it day by day.
41:52Kevion is 11 years old.
41:54He is
41:56Keyline all over again.
41:58He made a song for his father.
42:00The name of the song is
42:02A Letter to My Dad, right?
42:04So it's like you're reading it to him.
42:08Like, why did you go?
42:10Now I don't know what direction
42:12to go.
42:14Now I'm just trying to find my soul
42:16inside, and every
42:18day I wish he'd survive, but
42:22every day I'm asking God, like, why?
42:26I wake up
42:28sometimes, and I
42:30see Keyline's face, like,
42:32standing over me.
42:34Keyline's right there.
42:36You see the lights flicker?
42:42Keyline's watching us.
42:48Keyline.
