Hosur, Tamil Nadu – A shocking case of child marriage has emerged from Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district, where a distressing video surfaced on social media showing a young girl being forcibly carried away by her husband while she cried for help.
Police confirmed on Thursday that five individuals, including the girl’s parents, husband, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, have been arrested in connection with the illegal marriage.
According to officials, the 14-year-old girl, a Class 7 dropout, was married against her will to 30-year-old Madesh from Kalikuttai. The wedding took place in Bengaluru on February 3. Following the marriage, she was taken to her husband’s home, where she repeatedly expressed her objections.
When an opportunity arose, the girl attempted to escape. However, her family tracked her down, and upon her refusal to return, Madesh forcibly carried her on his shoulders while she cried for help. The incident, captured by locals, quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread condemnation.
In response to complaints from residents and social activists, the Tenkanikottai All Women Police registered a case under the POCSO Act and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
On March 5, authorities arrested the girl’s mother, Nagamma, her husband Madesh, and his brother Mallesh. They were later remanded in Salem Jail. Further investigations led to the arrests of the girl’s sister-in-law, Muniyammal, and her father, Muniyappa, on March 6.
The incident took place in a village near Hosur, home to approximately 5,000 people, and is part of the region's hill settlements, including Onnepuram, Siddappanur, Chikkamanji, and Kiriyanur.
Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, reports indicate that child marriages remain prevalent in these areas. Authorities have assured that further investigations are underway.
