00:00If there's a fire, it's not only the people who are in danger, but also our health and life.
00:07That's right, Magie. In this situation, the importance of knowledge about first aid and responding to injuries is very important.
00:14That's why our campaign is still active this Fire Prevention Month.
00:17We're here with the Emergency Medicine Specialist, Dr. Mark Paul Castilla. Good morning, Doc.
00:24Good morning. Good morning.
00:26Good morning, Doc.
00:27I'll start by talking about the things to remember before a fire.
00:35We should remember that for an ignition to start, there should be fuel, heat, and oxygen.
00:42Fuel means anything that can be burned.
00:44Heat is any source of fire and then oxygen.
00:49So the prevention is geared towards eliminating one or two of the components.
00:55Like that, we have to unplug or disconnect appliances when not in use.
01:00We also need to remove or replace damaged appliances.
01:07When cooking, we need to be on guard while cooking.
01:11If possible, you have a fire extinguisher or a fire prevention system in your home.
01:18If possible, do not use open flames or candles or if ever, keep an eye on them.
01:26You also keep away flammable materials and you store it in dry and safe places.
01:33If better, don't smoke.
01:36But if you can't avoid it, please don't smoke inside your homes.
01:40And one important thing is that you should have an emergency plan or emergency drills in your homes or at home.
01:51Okay.
01:52Doc, this is Meiji, by the way.
01:54What are the things that should be included in an emergency kit?
01:58And how can this help during a fire?
02:01Because some people don't prepare an emergency kit, right?
02:04But this is very important.
02:06What are the things that should be included?
02:09Okay.
02:10So usually, our first aid kits are different.
02:14But basically, for burn emergency kits, you have burn dressing or gauze where you will cover the wounds.
02:22You have burn gels or cooling gels.
02:25Gloves to protect you and the patient from contaminations.
02:30Scissors to cut clothes and bandages.
02:35Fire blanket, if ever, you wrap it around the body to protect you while escaping.
02:41You also have masks to prevent inhalation of significant materials.
02:47Pain medication, sometimes topical antibiotics.
02:51And of course, leaflets or instruction materials of that first aid kit.
02:56Doc, what are the common health issues or injuries that can be experienced after a fire?
03:05So there are two components.
03:08Thermal or burn injuries.
03:10And then indirect, which is inhalational injuries.
03:14Other types of burns, you have chemical burns or electrical injuries.
03:18And those that are not directly connected to the burn or to the fire,
03:25you can have bodily trauma such as contusions, abrasions, wounds, fractures, etc.
03:34Doc, when we speak of burns, what are the stages of burns that our countrymen can experience if ever they experience a fire?
03:48So the most common or the most classic classification is based on depth.
03:55So if it's just superficial or in the epidermis layer, this is called the first degree.
04:02The classic example of this is sunburn.
04:05Usually, there is no blister formation and this is painful or happy.
04:10We have the second degree, which involves epidermis and part of the dermis.
04:16Usually, you can see that they have blister formation.
04:21And then we have the third degree, which involves epidermis and dermis.
04:26And then the fourth degree, which involves tissues under the skin.
04:33We still have a lot of questions, but thank you very much, Doc, for your time.
04:37Again, we are here with the Emergency Medicine Specialist, Dr. Mark Paul Castillo.
04:41Thank you very much.
