00:00Before watching the video, let me remind you that there is more content on the R.E.D.I.M.E. website.
00:05When we talk about environmental pollution,
00:07we usually don't think of clothes at first.
00:10But in fact, every piece of clothing from a fashion store
00:13will be thrown away on average within a year.
00:15The waste produced by the world every year
00:18reaches 90 million tons.
00:20And the number is constantly increasing.
00:22So how do we make second-hand clothes cheap
00:26to reduce the key to prevent waste?
00:29In Uganda, there is an entrepreneur
00:31who makes second-hand jeans
00:34and then sells them for a living.
00:37He hopes to reduce waste,
00:39reduce environmental pollution,
00:40and contribute to the future of the earth.
00:44In the city of Kampala, the capital of Uganda,
00:47the second-hand clothing shops are lined up
00:49to form a unique landscape.
00:51This country with a population of 4 million people
00:53is not developed in the textile industry,
00:55so they import 80,000 tons of second-hand clothing from Europe and the United States every year.
00:58However, some vendors say
01:00that these second-hand clothes are not as easy to sell as they seem,
01:02and are often subject to cancellation.
01:04But a local entrepreneur saw an opportunity.
01:07They recycled the lost jeans and corner pieces
01:10and turned them into new fashion items
01:12to create unique, trendy clothing.
01:14We are trying to protect our environment
01:16by using sustainable material.
01:18So we try and reuse denim that has been thrown or put to waste.
01:22So that's where the first process starts with,
01:24sourcing the wasted denim or the offcuts of denim,
01:28sourcing materials,
01:30and then we look at now bringing it into our factory,
01:33where we start cutting out patterns and pieces
01:35to add specific designs.
01:37These jeans that have been given a new life
01:40start at $60,
01:42and are loved by local celebrities, artists, and fashion enthusiasts.
01:45They are also becoming a popular item.
01:48I love the authenticity about the products here.
01:51I love the creativity.
01:53I believe they really think out of the box
01:55and try and repurpose denim.
01:58It gives denim more depth
02:02and makes us appreciate denim more.
02:04Because these products are well-received,
02:06sellers have decided to increase production.
02:09This not only helps promote the local second-hand clothing market,
02:12but also hopes that one day,
02:13these recycled clothes will be exported
02:15back to the place where they were first thrown away.
