00:00The Philippine contingent is ready to be sent to Myanmar to assist in the humanitarian and disaster response
00:06following the strong earthquake there.
00:08That's what Rod Lagusan reported.
00:12Tomorrow, April 1, the Philippine contingent team left for Myanmar.
00:18This is to assist in the ongoing rescue operation following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake.
00:24According to the Office of the Civil Defense,
00:2690 personnel from various agencies, such as the Philippine Army, Philippine Air Force, BFP, MMDA,
00:32DOH, and the private sector will be sent.
00:35Some of these will be the first to be sent to the earthquake-stricken Turkey.
00:39Our main mission there is to help in finding possible survivors,
00:46in the structures that are collapsing.
00:50We will also provide medical assistance to the victims of the strong earthquake.
01:00Ten of them are from the 525th Combat Engineer Battalion of the Philippine Army.
01:05They are specialized in collapse structure search and rescue.
01:09That's why they were chosen to be sent to Myanmar.
01:12Before taking action, the area must be assessed properly.
01:17Our colleagues are well-trained.
01:21They know how to shore and how to properly move debris
01:26to avoid further collapse of the structures.
01:32They brought various equipment to assist in the rescue operation,
01:36such as a hydraulic cutter for cutting steel,
01:39a snake-eye camera to see the situation inside the debris,
01:43and a listening device to detect voices or movements.
01:47The country's contingent will stay in Myanmar until April 12.
01:51Meanwhile, here in the Philippines, according to PHEVOX,
01:54the West Valley Fault that last erupted in 1658 is now submerged
01:57and the so-called The Big One is possible to erupt,
02:00which can reach a magnitude 7.2 earthquake.
02:04Based on the Metro Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study
02:07conducted by PHEVOX, MMDA, and JICA in 2004,
02:11The casualties will reach 33,500 and the injured will go as high as 113,000.
02:19Our casualties will increase if not all of our injured are treated,
02:26it will reach 100,000 and there are additional deaths by fire,
02:30it will reach 18,000.
02:31Yes, that's right, around 51,000.
02:33That's in Metro Manila alone.
02:35In 2016, the Metro Manila provinces had a new earthquake together.
02:41From 33,000, it will reach 48,000 during rush hour.
02:46The OCD prioritizes the possibility of conducting a new study
02:51with JICA in 2026 or 2027.
02:55Aside from this, the Philippine Fault in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija
02:58that can generate a magnitude 7.9 earthquake
03:01while a magnitude 8 earthquake can generate a magnitude 8 earthquake.
03:06It can be felt in NCR, especially in high-rise buildings
03:10just like what happened in Bangkok, Thailand
03:12that even though it's far from Mandalay, Myanmar,
03:14it can be felt.
03:15This is because of the so-called long-period resonance.
03:18While in Metro Manila, there can be a magnitude 8.2 earthquake
03:22that can cause a 3.5-meter tsunami wave
03:26and an additional 2 meters if there's a high tide
03:29and it can reach more than 2 kilometers.
03:32Aside from this, there can be a tsunami wave in the northern part of the country
03:35if there's a strong tsunami wave in the Pacific Ocean
03:38just like what happened in Chile or Alaska.
03:41We cannot be 100% prepared but as I've mentioned,
03:44we are now more prepared than several decades ago.
03:49But there are still challenges that we need to handle
03:52and we're on our way.
03:54For example, the infrastructure vulnerability.
03:58So some older buildings, roads, bridges,
04:01and other critical infrastructures in Metro Manila
04:03may not be earthquake-resistant.
04:05Retrofitting and reinforcing buildings are important
04:08and this is what our government is doing.
04:11Also included in the population density,
04:13how the evacuation and emergency response will proceed.
