00:48Things can any day go wrong.
00:50We are talking of entrepreneurship.
00:52The mornings never really end.
00:54You show up and then you show up and then you show up
00:56and you figure out it's midnight
00:58and you still have to show up for something.
01:00So it's a thing of the heart.
01:01As a young person, ask yourself,
01:04I have like 40 years to work.
01:07What is it that I can turn up for daily?
01:10How do you go about finding your own purpose?
01:13It's actually so simple that we miss it.
01:16Ask yourself, what do I see as important in the world today?
01:21We are equipped with our education
01:23and our smart me figure out the right challenge to engage with.
01:26There is no way you can fail
01:28if you never stop trying.
01:31Today we have a special session with students
01:43from the University of California at Berkeley.
01:47They have been wanting to have an interaction with you
01:49for quite some time.
01:51So right now we have thousands of students, faculty
01:56and also other participants who have joined the session.
02:00Hi, I'm Padma Jai.
02:01I'm a master's student in global studies here at UC Berkeley.
02:04Currently in my second year.
02:06I have been following Achariji for a while now.
02:10I'm really excited for this conversation.
02:12My first question to you, Achariji,
02:14is that your teachings have emphasized rationality
02:18and practicality,
02:19which have deeply impacted the way I approach my life
02:22and decisions.
02:23As I nearly graduate from Berkeley
02:25in just about three months,
02:27I've been reflecting on the path forward.
02:30In many ways, entrepreneurship seems to be an answer,
02:33which could be potentially the career
02:35that I choose going forward.
02:37However, it does feel a huge leap into the unknown.
02:41It's undeniably risky.
02:42And despite wanting to rely on logic and reason,
02:45I often find myself needing to trust
02:47in something beyond pure analysis.
02:49How can, according to you,
02:51someone striving to achieve big, uncertain dreams
02:55like building a business,
02:56balance the need for rational decision-making
02:59with the faith required to sort of take on
03:01those bold leap forward?
03:04There need not be a balance.
03:09To begin with,
03:15there has to be a certainty.
03:21And certainties are not balanced.
03:25When you talk of a balance,
03:27you are talking of probabilities.
03:30In the external world,
03:32obviously things are probabilistic.
03:35The outcomes are not in your control.
03:38But in the inner world,
03:42there can be a certainty
03:43and that's where one has to start from.
03:47Right?
03:48Be it entrepreneurship
03:49or be it anything worthwhile
03:51one wants to undertake in life.
03:55So one starts from there.
03:57One knows what one is getting into
03:59is definitely worth doing.
04:01It is something one can give herself to
04:07irrespective of what comes out of it.
04:12That kind of certainty.
04:13And then comes the rational planning
04:19and decision-making part.
04:22So I'm into something
04:24that deserves to be done.
04:26And then I apply my intellect,
04:29all the accumulated knowledge
04:31and my skills I have gathered
04:33over my MBA or other programs.
04:35And I come up with a plan,
04:38a roadmap that looks into the future.
04:40And obviously,
04:41there you cannot have certainty.
04:43There you will have scenarios.
04:46And all scenarios are probabilistic.
04:50And you look into them
04:53and you want to obviously
04:54maximize the probability
04:57of your success.
05:00Success in terms of numbers,
05:02attainments,
05:03break-evens
05:04and such things.
05:10But then those are all probabilities.
05:12Things can any day go wrong.
05:16What will uphold you then
05:18is the fundamental certainty
05:22you started from.
05:25And that itself is faith.
05:31To get into what is right
05:33without worrying too much
05:35about the outcome.
05:38To be sure
05:39that the effort
05:43and the process itself
05:45is worth it.
05:47Even if nothing
05:50or very little
05:52tangible comes out of it.
05:54That is faith.
05:56If you want to have everything
05:58neatly
06:00planned out
06:03and
06:05set in stone,
06:08then it does not
06:10require any faith
06:11and then
06:12there is no
06:14thrill in it either.
06:15And somehow
06:18the nature
06:19of
06:20the right work,
06:22the right endeavor
06:23is always
06:24such that
06:24you can never be sure
06:26of the outcome.
06:28Reason being,
06:29it is never
06:30the beaten
06:31track
06:32when it comes
06:33to the
06:35right endeavor.
06:37You can be sure
06:38of things
06:39when
06:40let's say
06:40you
06:41are entering
06:42an industry.
06:44Then you can
06:45look
06:46at the
06:47data
06:48of
06:49the
06:49startups
06:51over the last
06:5110 years
06:52in that particular
06:53segment
06:54and you could say
06:55well there seems
06:56to be a success rate
06:57of 48.4%.
06:59For that
07:01you need
07:01others who have
07:02taken the same path
07:03and you are
07:06just following
07:06the trail.
07:07but that's
07:09not
07:10really
07:12the
07:13nature
07:13of the
07:14right work.
07:15When you will
07:16get into something
07:17really worthwhile
07:17you might find
07:19that you are
07:20probably the
07:21first one
07:22going in that
07:22direction
07:23or very few
07:24have gone
07:24in that
07:25direction.
07:26So you will
07:27not have
07:28data to
07:30compare yourself
07:31with
07:31or the
07:32right metrics
07:33to base
07:34your projections
07:35on.
07:35So then
07:37you will have
07:38to simply
07:38say well
07:39we do not
07:39know
07:40what's going
07:41to come
07:41upon us
07:42tomorrow
07:42but what's
07:44definite is
07:45that the
07:46effort and
07:47the journey
07:47are going
07:48to be worth
07:48it.
07:50And this
07:51in no way
07:52excludes
07:53rationality.
07:57It
07:57includes
07:58everything
07:59that you
07:59have learned
08:00at your
08:01university.
08:03It
08:03includes
08:04application
08:04of your
08:05IQ.
08:06It
08:06includes
08:07meeting
08:08experts.
08:09It
08:09includes
08:09doing
08:10industry
08:10analysis.
08:11Everything
08:12that can
08:12be done.
08:14But
08:15first of
08:16all it
08:17is about
08:17starting
08:17from the
08:18right place.
08:19You start
08:20from the
08:20right place
08:21and then
08:22let
08:22intellect
08:23be the
08:23tool
08:24to achieve
08:26the
08:27end
08:29that you
08:29have in
08:29sight.
08:30or if
08:32there is
08:32no
08:33particular
08:33end
08:33in sight
08:34then let
08:34intellect
08:34be the
08:35tool
08:35to help
08:36you navigate
08:37the path
08:37you have
08:38chosen.
08:39Even if
08:39that path
08:40has no
08:41clear destination.
08:43So this
08:43is what I'm
08:44talking of
08:45is not at
08:46all just
08:46mystical
08:47or irrational.
08:49This involves
08:50the application
08:52of all the
08:53rationality you
08:54can summon.
08:54But
08:57rationality is
08:58not the
08:58point you
08:58can start
08:59from.
09:00Because
09:01at your
09:03core
09:03you and
09:06I and
09:07each one
09:07of us
09:08are people
09:09seeking
09:09purpose.
09:12Purpose
09:13and
09:13fulfillment.
09:15Now
09:15fulfillment
09:16has no
09:17rational
09:18answer.
09:20It's
09:21like love.
09:21rationality
09:24assumes a
09:26secondary
09:26position there.
09:27We are
09:28not saying
09:28you need
09:29to be
09:29irrational
09:30there.
09:31But that
09:31comes later.
09:33So as a
09:34young person
09:35setting out
09:35in life
09:36you must
09:37ask yourself
09:38I have
09:39like 40
09:39years to
09:40work.
09:42What would
09:42I want
09:43to invest
09:43this single
09:45precious life
09:45I have
09:46in?
09:48It's
09:48not
09:49about
09:50emulating
09:52others
09:52seeing
09:53where
09:53the
09:54maximum
09:54chances
09:55of
09:55financial
09:56success
09:57are.
09:59Not
10:00that those
10:00calculations
10:01need not
10:01be done.
10:02I am
10:02reiterating
10:03again and
10:03again.
10:04Those
10:04calculations
10:04obviously
10:05need to
10:06be done
10:06but they
10:07come
10:07later.
10:08The
10:09first
10:10dialogue
10:10is
10:11with
10:11oneself.
10:13I have
10:14a long
10:14life to
10:15live and
10:15I have
10:1540 years
10:16to work.
10:17What is
10:18it that
10:18I can
10:19turn up
10:20for
10:20daily?
10:22You'll
10:23have to
10:23show up
10:24every
10:24morning.
10:25And if
10:26you're
10:26talking of
10:27entrepreneurship
10:27the mornings
10:29never really
10:30end.
10:31You show
10:32up and
10:32then you
10:32show up
10:33and then
10:33you show
10:33up and
10:34you figure
10:35out it's
10:35midnight and
10:37you still
10:37have to
10:38show up
10:38for
10:38something.
10:40So it's
10:41a thing
10:41of the
10:42heart and
10:43you have
10:43to be
10:43very clear
10:44there.
10:45You see
10:45I have
10:45seen a lot
10:47of startups
10:47my
10:49batchmates
10:50and others
10:52and have
10:55mentored a
10:56few of
10:56them in
10:57fact.
10:58We often
10:59talk of
10:59the
11:00dismal
11:01success
11:01rate of
11:02startups
11:02but we
11:05do not
11:07research deeper
11:08into it
11:08and figure
11:09out where
11:11exactly did
11:11the decision
11:14to down
11:15the shutters
11:16come from.
11:19It is
11:20usually not
11:21coming from
11:23an inherently
11:24flawed business
11:25plan.
11:27You all are
11:28smart people
11:29and similar
11:30in India
11:31we have
11:32smart people
11:33who come up
11:33with really
11:34good business
11:36plans.
11:37It's just
11:38that that
11:39entire plan
11:40is for
11:40the sake
11:41of
11:43a
11:46financial
11:46end result
11:48at which
11:52point people
11:52want to
11:53come up
11:54with an
11:54IPO
11:55and then
11:56make an
11:57exit
11:57and then
11:59enjoy the
11:59fruits of
12:00their
12:00smartness.
12:03So people
12:04don't quit
12:05because
12:06success is
12:08not forthcoming
12:08at all.
12:09People quit
12:09because
12:11their
12:12expectations,
12:13their financial
12:13expectations
12:14are not
12:15really being
12:15met.
12:18They find
12:18that the
12:20numbers that
12:22they targeted
12:23may take
12:24three times
12:26more effort
12:27and more
12:29duration to
12:30come at.
12:33They may
12:34and then
12:35if you
12:35really have
12:37your
12:38conviction
12:41and your
12:41heart into
12:42it,
12:43then you
12:43will try
12:44to find
12:45different
12:45ways.
12:46You will
12:46say,
12:46I'm not
12:47going to
12:47quit.
12:49You will
12:49say,
12:49if this
12:50thing is
12:50not working
12:51out,
12:51I'll try
12:51it this
12:52way,
12:52I'll try
12:52it that
12:53way,
12:53I'll try
12:53it that
12:53way,
12:53because
12:54quitting
12:54is not
12:55an
12:55option.
12:57But
12:57quitting
12:57is a
12:59very,
12:59very
13:00lucrative
13:01option.
13:01when you
13:03want to
13:05gather
13:06riches in
13:07the fourth
13:07year itself.
13:10And that's
13:11the reason
13:12some of
13:12the very
13:14good ideas
13:16and
13:17feasible
13:18projects,
13:19they are
13:20brought
13:21to a
13:22quick and
13:23untimely
13:24closure.
13:26Had those
13:27people
13:27persisted,
13:30probably
13:30they would
13:32have reached
13:33somewhere,
13:33maybe not
13:33the place
13:34that they
13:34targeted,
13:35but some
13:35other
13:36decent
13:36place.
13:38Then
13:39there was
13:41no
13:41conviction
13:45in the
13:46project
13:47itself.
13:49The
13:50I
13:51was
13:52very
13:53focused
13:54on
13:55using
13:55the
13:56project
13:56to
13:57reach
13:58a
13:58particular
13:58place
13:59in the
13:59shortest
14:00time
14:00possible.
14:02And
14:02that's
14:03what
14:03results
14:04in the
14:05so-called
14:05failure
14:06and
14:06closure
14:06and
14:07these
14:07things.
14:09There is
14:10no way
14:10you can
14:10fail
14:11if you
14:13never
14:13stop
14:13trying.
14:17Failure
14:17in
14:18something
14:19like a
14:19startup
14:19is only
14:20when
14:20you
14:21decide
14:21that
14:22you
14:22have
14:22failed,
14:22right?
14:24If
14:25you say
14:25I have
14:25not yet
14:26failed,
14:26I'll
14:28give it
14:28another
14:29go.
14:31But
14:31then
14:32when
14:32you
14:33have
14:33already
14:33raised
14:33a
14:34huge
14:34cost
14:35structure

14:38you
14:38want
14:39commensurate
14:40revenues

15:02personal

15:04and

15:07structure

15:10demands

15:11of
15:12revenue
15:12and
15:12if
15:12that
15:13doesn't
15:13seem
15:13in sight

15:16I'm
15:16hanging
15:17up

15:17boots
15:17don't
15:19let
15:19that
15:19happen
15:19first
15:22of

15:23internal
15:24dialogue
15:24should
15:25be
15:25very
15:25clear

15:28one

15:30fail

19:14always speak

19:16should know
19:16the right
19:16time to

19:23long as you

19:26dynamics of this
