00:00Good afternoon and Jai Hind sir, I am Rhea Tiwari, a student of Delhi University and
00:08my question to you is sir that people define success by different terms like influence,
00:13happiness, fame or name fame etc.
00:17So sir when did you started considering yourself success?
00:26First of all thanks for inviting me here, I don't consider myself a success even today.
00:39So your question is founded on an assumption and you say that when in the past did you
00:45start considering yourself a success?
00:48You are assuming that at some point I did or currently I do, no I don't.
00:55I don't think there is any end point called success.
01:07As long as one is alive there is more and more to be done continuously.
01:15One can declare herself successful only if the target is too small, too limited and then
01:30you can get close to the target or win it and say that you are successful but that kind
01:40of declaration means nothing.
01:43One is then just fooling, pampering himself, does not mean much, there can be milestones
01:54along the way.
01:58As you move you can probably see that you are going past a few important points and
02:10even those points are important only relatively, relative to where you currently stand you
02:18might find that a few milestones mean much to you.
02:26But in the overall sense, in the absolute perspective hardly anything that you have
02:37gone past makes much significance or holds too much of a meaning.
02:50So one has to continuously keep moving this notion of becoming successful, this idea that
03:03by reaching a particular point or by having a certain accomplishment one can declare himself
03:11as successful is not very mature and is also dangerous because it limits you.
03:25It tells you that there are certain things to be had and more or less those things are
03:31universal.
03:33You want to have an educational degree, you want to have a job, you want to have money,
03:39you want to have a settled kind of life and you want to be regarded highly in the society
03:47and if you have all these things then you start calling yourself successful.
03:52This is a limiting rather debilitating idea.
04:01It will not allow you to move beyond these things that we just listed.
04:10And even among these things, what is it that counts in the common idea of success, money.
04:19Because if you have money, prestige can be bought.
04:23If you have money, much under the sun can be bought.
04:31So primarily the idea of success as it is prevalent in the youth today and is being
04:37aggressively sold in the market is about having money.
04:42If you have enough money you can call yourself successful.
04:45No, that is not a valid idea because you have to look at yourself and ask yourself
04:58who am I?
05:00Why am I born?
05:01Why do I exist at all?
05:04Is there complete fulfillment?
05:08Isn't there more that needs to be done?
05:12Isn't the fire still burning?
05:16There are frontiers after frontiers.
05:19There are skies beyond skies.
05:22How can you stop at some place and just abruptly, randomly, arbitrarily call yourself successful?
05:36What I have seen from my little experience and when I look at my peers and my batchmates
05:47is that the moment you call yourself successful, you start stagnating.
05:54Because success is like a destination.
05:57The idea that we have been sold is that you move to attain success.
06:09Extend it logically, then it means that success is the end of all movement.
06:16If one moves, that is, if one works to attain success, if that is the idea, then success
06:21will be the end of all movement, the destination.
06:28And if you reach the destination, then what are you still traveling for?
06:38If the train has reached its destination, you are supposed to deboard, aren't you?
06:43And if you don't get down on your own, you are thrown out.
06:47That's the meaning of success, deboard, finished, game up.
06:51Why do you want to finish the game so early, too early?
06:58Life is anyway short.
07:02Life is anyway short.
07:03You can never have too much of it.
07:07And on top of it, you want to end it inwardly at the age of 30, 35 or 40.
07:15That doesn't make sense, right?
07:17So Vedanta says, charaiveti, charaiveti, continuously keep moving.
07:23Don't fool yourself by declaring yourself as arrived.
07:28Don't tell yourself that you have reached any important position.
07:33Don't inflate yourself.
07:36Don't become a big one or a successful one in your own eyes.
07:43Retain that humility and don't douse the fire.
07:51Because that's the fact.
07:53Nobody is yet fully liberated as long as he or she is alive, which means that the mission
08:03still remains unfulfilled.
08:06If you are breathing, if you are still breathing, then the mission remains on till your last
08:17breath.
08:20You are somebody who must keep working, walking, moving.
08:28So first thing I would advise, know what is it in life that you must keep striving
08:38for, working towards and then endlessly work in that direction.
08:47Let there be a direction, but never a destination, right?
08:53So you know the broad direction in which you have to move.
08:57And the movement has to be immense, endless, infinite.
09:04One moves in the direction of liberation without ever arriving.
09:11That's something that does not quite please the ego because the ego likes to arrive.
09:15It likes to settle matters.
09:18It's like to say the end, the matter stands concluded.
09:25Don't fall in that trap.
09:26Thank you, sir.
