00:00Boy, the party has started here in the Riff Hallway for the 50th anniversary.
00:07You guys came in and it was like a tornado on Detroit rock stars.
00:17WRIF, baby. Detroit's longtime rock station is celebrating 50 years on the air this weekend and they're bringing back some of the legendary voices we've grown to love over the Eagles.
00:36I gotta get this out of the way right now. 101 WRIF, the home of rock and roll.
00:42WRIF, baby. Jim Johnson and George Byer from J.J. and the Morning Crew kicking off the Riff's Legends weekend with a stop at the studio on Friday.
00:52Radio legend Kim Calvert joining the party too and dropping some inside knowledge on us during our visit to the studio.
01:00So you know, it was never really baby. It was A-B. Because you never really got the B out.
01:06So you ready for it? Here we go, folks. 1, 2, 3. 101 of MWRIF.
01:11Hey, buddy!
01:17From 1979 through 1986, J.J. and the Morning Crew rock the airwaves.
01:23Yeah, it's been 50 years for the radio station, only six years for us.
01:26But to this day, I can go walking down the street and I've been at several other radio stations since then.
01:31I can hear people point and say, you're the Riff guy. Right?
01:35Just like Yul Perkins at Channel 7. I really think so.
01:37Well, that's not true. But what is true is that back in the day, Detroit was considered the rock and roll capital of the United States.
01:47And WRIF was a big reason for that. Artists like Alice Cooper and Bob Seeker became friends with the staff, becoming part of the Riff family.
01:59It was one of the greatest days of my life. The happiest 15 years I've ever, ever had. And I wish I could go back. We're here in the hallowed halls of 101 FMWRIF.
02:11We had so much fun. Groundbreaking. New artists. So many bands coming in and out. Softball games.
02:21Pine knob opening. It was just unbelievable.
02:25The official 50-year anniversary will take place on Valentine's Day. But we're told it will be a year-long celebration.
02:32So stay tuned for on-air tributes, the station personalities, and music from five decades of rock and roll.
02:40Congratulations to WRIF and everybody who's ever worked here for making this the home of rock and roll.
02:49It'll be alright.
02:52Employees are friendly.
