00:00Jade here from 101WRIF, sitting down with Jonathan Davis of the Almighty Korn, who just got off stage at DTE.
00:06How was it, brother? Because from up on the lawn, you looked fantastic.
00:09It was awesome. Thank you.
00:11I mean, I always have fun playing in big crowds. It's my favorite.
00:15I'm just really happy. It's just awesome to see so many people here tonight.
00:19It's sold out, I think.
00:21It just really makes me happy to see that rock is alive and well.
00:24I've seen for a long time that, you know, there's not many of us bands left that can do these big places.
00:31Everything going on with online music now and the saturation of so much music and things are getting watered down.
00:38And, I mean, who's going to be replaced?
00:40Who's going to be the bands for the next generation of kids?
00:44Who's going to be able to do this kind of stuff?
00:45Because, you know, the other band for me was like ACDC and, you know, all that kind of stuff.
00:50We're doing that, but now we're here, but who's going to be that after all of us are gone?
00:56It's just, I get excited.
00:57I just want to just, you know, be happy that there's a rock audience still in it and we keep it going.
01:03And I'm just having fun at this point in my career.
01:05I don't care about anything, but just I want to see people smiling and dancing and having a good time.
01:10Well, I can tell you everyone out on the lawn tonight was dancing and smiling and having a good time.
01:14And what I think is super awesome is you guys just celebrated your 20th anniversary.
01:1923rd.
01:1923rd.
01:20Is it 23rd?
01:2122nd.
01:2222nd.
01:23So over 20 years of melting people's faces off.
01:26And what I think is so awesome is that so many of your fans that I stood out there with tonight singing your songs have grown up with you.
01:33Yeah.
01:33And have been there since day one, since the debut album.
01:37And so, you know, 22 years into the career when you come up on stage and you see people who look at you like, wow, this is my life.
01:43You are my life.
01:44How does that make you feel?
01:45I mean, it's a little overwhelming.
01:47Um, I just really liked from that time period just having a good time living my dreams out and expressing myself and helping people.
01:57At that time, I really didn't know what I was doing.
01:59And I didn't, I was so whacked out of my mind on drugs and alcohol at that time.
02:04And it wasn't until, I think, after Ball the Leader, that's when I got sober in 98.
02:10And what is it?
02:11Tomorrow is my 18th year of sobriety.
02:14Congratulations.
02:15I've been in 18 years.
02:16That's amazing.
02:17I made it really, it's just, it's been an amazing journey.
02:19And to see it, that everyone's coming back and having some fun, living their childhood and seeing all the kids.
02:24There's still tons of kids out there.
02:25So, I mean, we're doing something that touches people.
02:29We're getting ready to release our 12th record.
02:31Yeah.
02:31And people are freaking out over it.
02:34And I just feel blessed to be able to keep doing this.
02:36And I love what I do.
02:38Good.
02:38We love what you do.
02:39Let's talk about the new album, The Serenity of Suffering.
02:42It's coming out October 21st.
02:43And actually, a new song called Insane premiered tonight, I believe, on the BBC Radio Network.
02:51So, anticipation.
02:53When you're on tour and the album hasn't dropped yet, is it kind of different than after the album comes out?
02:59Because you're anticipating the album hasn't dropped yet.
03:00No one has heard all the new songs yet.
03:02So, what's your kind of mental status going into a show where you're like, man, I have all this new music and I want you guys to hear it?
03:09Yeah, I really do.
03:10It's just, you know, it just has to come out how it comes out.
03:13And there's all kinds of things involved that I don't really get involved in.
03:17And it's all business, marketing, all this whatever crap.
03:21I just want people to hear the music.
03:23And it's fun that Rotting the Vein has been out.
03:25And now that we released Insane, it's just you get a taste of the record.
03:28But the whole thing is slamming all the way through.
03:30I think people are going to be really happy.
03:31Yeah.
03:32So far, we've had a great reaction from the new single.
03:34I'm super pumped to hear Insane.
03:37And how was working with Corey Taylor?
03:39I mean, we've worked with him.
03:41I mean, it was awesome.
03:43I actually wasn't in the room with him.
03:45I finished the song.
03:47Nick, the producer, when we were in Bakersfield working on my vocals, said, hey, Corey's in L.A.
03:51And I go, that'd be cool if you came on a song.
03:53So I text him all, you want to sing on a Korn song?
03:56He's all, hell yeah.
03:56And they figured it out.
03:57Actually, he went and flew to Nashville because that's where the guys recorded the music and did the vocals there.
04:02I already had finished my vocals and he did his part.
04:04So we weren't actually in the same room together.
04:06But I knew he did a good job.
04:07He's amazing at what he does.
04:09Yeah.
04:09Yeah, it's awesome to see rock bands who have been rocking for such a great amount of time come together and continue to rock.
04:16Totally.
04:17It's super exciting.
04:18So what is the biggest thing you're looking forward to once this album drops?
04:21I guess just going out and playing them live.
04:26Yeah.
04:26It's just fun.
04:27I mean, I love making records and I love touring.
04:30So all of it's fun for me.
04:33I just, it's what I do.
04:35All right.
04:35Well, there you have it.
04:36You buying his record makes him smile.
04:38And Jonathan Davis has a fantastic smile.
04:40So go on out there.
04:41October 21st, grab the serenity of suffering.
