00:00Hey everyone, Brandon Plotnick,
00:09the DPD from Fayetteville here.
00:12We're going to walk through the basics of how to create
00:15a post in WordPress or the fundamental piece
00:18to creating content within our sites.
00:21Then we're going to walk through a few of the other steps
00:23within there in some separate videos,
00:26but we will touch on the top level of all of those here in
00:29this one as well.
00:30The first thing you're going to want to do is log into your station site.
00:34Most of them are going to be your stationname.com
00:36slash wp-login right there.
00:39You don't need the rest of this on that first time.
00:41Mine's doing that because it's remembering me from previous times.
00:45Get your credentials put in and then log right in.
00:48That's going to take you into the WordPress dashboard.
00:52Your WordPress dashboard,
00:53most of these things you're not going to need unless you're trying to access
00:56the most recent posts right here.
00:59Best ways to navigate WordPress,
01:02you've got a menu bar across the top.
01:04If you mouse over the new here,
01:06it's going to show you all the new types of content you can create.
01:09Most of what you're going to do is new posts.
01:12We're going to talk a little bit about the difference between posts and pages here in a second.
01:17And then over on the left is all of those same areas.
01:21This is the main area to find them.
01:23So your dashboard, your home pages, your keywords, your posts, your notifications, events.
01:30Your list may look a little different based on your access level.
01:33And then pages right there.
01:35The main areas that you're going to spend time in are probably going to be in posts,
01:40maybe events, depending on your role and maybe pages, depending on what you're trying to accomplish.
01:45The biggest difference between posts and pages is posts are generally reserved for immediate content
01:54that will then cycle out.
01:55So these all come with a date attached to them.
01:58So if you're doing a story, for example, on Brett Young and his wife welcoming a baby,
02:03that's going to be a little more timely and that'll be a post.
02:06Pages are reserved for more things that are more permanent.
02:09So you might have an event or some bigger program that you're doing that may require something like this.
02:15Generally, your DPDs and marketing folks are going to do your pages while you're going to probably be doing posts.
02:23So we're going to be looking at posts, though.
02:24To create new posts, you can come in either through here and add a new post or through the top and add a new post.
02:31We'll click on new post here.
02:34There are several elements that you want to accomplish when you're looking at creating a post.
02:39You're going to need a headline.
02:41You're going to need some content and you're going to need an image, at least one.
02:45Those are the basic elements of what you'll need for a post.
02:49For me, I prefer to write my content first and then write a headline to it.
02:54That way I'm not chasing a headline or chasing my content to a headline.
02:59So what I'll typically do is come down in here in this box and we'll write our content out here.
03:06So today, well, let's do this a little bit differently.
03:10The wonderful talent at Beasley, helps if you type correct,
03:19learned how to do posts today.
03:21So let's pretend you've done several paragraphs worth of content there and you've got lots of
03:31great things within there.
03:32When you're working on content in the post box right here, this is just like an email.
03:38What you see is what you get at a dirt.
03:40You can do anything you want to it, including bolding, italics, bulleted lists.
03:44You can do block quotes.
03:46You can make it centered or right or anything like that.
03:49Generally, you're not going to want to do that.
03:51And then you can also create links.
03:54Links is probably what you're going to do more than anything.
03:57So let's say that we wanted to link the word Beasley off to the BBGI site.
04:02You just click on link and then type or paste your link in here.
04:07Let's just go with that for this example.
04:11That is now linked to that wonderful piece.
04:16What you do want to make sure you're doing anytime that you're creating content is
04:19crediting any source.
04:22So if this was according to CNN.com, we would also then want to make sure that we linked off to
04:32the CNN article with this portion here.
04:35So you'll do that with any piece of content that you're creating.
04:39If any of the ideas that you've come up with have come from another source, make sure you are
04:43crediting them.
04:45There's no reason not to.
04:47And we all use different sourcing for that.
04:49So it's way more important to make sure we're giving them credit when it's due.
04:53After you've finished the content of your post here, all the writing,
04:59then you can maybe write your headline to it.
05:01So in this case, maybe we say Beasley talent.
05:05Step up game.
05:12Giving listeners digital content.
05:18There are a few problems with this headline and we'll go over those more in the SEO post,
05:22but for now we're just going to show you the basics of how this works.
05:27So you have a headline now that goes with your story right here.
05:33You're not going to need a visual for this post as well.
05:37So there are several ways you can add visuals to your posts.
05:40The core way is to add a visual that you have supplied.
05:46If you're going to do that, you're going to click on add media.
05:48And you're going to upload your files.
05:51Select your files wherever they are.
05:53Let's pretend that it's this boxing photo.
05:59You'll put that in there.
06:01As you put it in, it's going to give you some fields where you can add information.
06:04This one already has some embedded information.
06:07We want to make sure it has a title.
06:09We want to make sure it has a caption.
06:11And we want to make sure that it has an attribution.
06:14So who took this photo?
06:15In this case, this one is Michael Mandred from USA Today.
06:20We're going to post his credit right there.
06:23But you could type your own name or whoever you got that photo from.
06:26Again, do not steal photos from Google, even if you're just putting credit.
06:30That is not the way to handle that.
06:32So we don't need to insert this into a post, though.
06:35We just wanted it in here.
06:37So now we can just close out.
06:39What we do want to do is over on the right side,
06:42we're going to scroll all the way down to the bottom.
06:44And we're going to set our featured image here.
06:47Setting a featured image will take you to that media library.
06:50You could have uploaded from here as well.
06:53And we're going to pick that photo.
06:56Then we're going to click set featured image.
06:57And you'll see that image now showing up in your list here.
07:00That's going to put the photo in your story and at the top of it as well.
07:06I'll show you a preview of what that looks like.
07:11See our headline.
07:12You see your author name.
07:14And you see the photo we just added with the photo credit
07:18and the photographer credit on there.
07:21Here's the content that we created.
07:23And here's the link that we created within there.
07:26Next, you're going to want to add the elements to make sure you're publishing this correctly.
07:36There are several things in here that allow you to publish at different times.
07:40That's going to be the biggest difference in this box.
07:42But if you're not worried about, if you're publishing right now,
07:45you can leave publish immediately.
07:46If you do want to schedule, just click edit.
07:49Pick the time that you want to schedule it.
07:51And then click OK.
07:52So let's pretend we're going to do this tomorrow at this time.
07:56So this is great if you're trying to pre-produce content for the rest of the week
08:00or maybe for your show later in the day.
08:03The rest of these elements, you're not going to really need to mess with
08:05unless you want something to expire at a certain time.
08:10Format.
08:10You're not going to really do much with this.
08:12If you do have a video in your post, you can click the video here.
08:16It adds a play button to the display featured image on there for you.
08:20But other than that, it doesn't do anything.
08:23Categories and tags we're going to have a separate video on,
08:25but I want to tell you the basics here.
08:27Always select a category because this is how it gets assigned to a content ribbon on the websites.
08:33Content ribbons are these areas here that have the headlines and the content within them,
08:40are the section header and the content within them.
08:42You want to make sure that you're selecting the content area for your show,
08:48if you're doing a show post or for associated with things.
08:52So if it's a music post, make sure you're picking music, things like that.
08:56There are a lot of categories within here.
08:59Your categories may look different depending on your market and your station,
09:02but generally you're going to want to make sure your show category is selected.
09:06So it shows in your content ribbon and then any other ribbons that matter for it.
09:10So here, let's say we're going to do local news lifestyle so that it shows up into our primary ribbon.
09:16And let's do music just for fun.
09:20Tags allow you to pick different elements that link off to different stories about the same topic.
09:26So if this story were about, let's say, Tim McGraw, Tim McGraw would be a great tag,
09:33because then it would give us the ability to link off to any other articles about Tim McGraw.
09:39Do not over tag, though.
09:40You don't need to do much here, and we'll go over that a little more in depth.
09:43So, but you don't need to do anything more than the basics of what your article is about.
09:48So if your article is about Tim McGraw, put Tim McGraw.
09:52Collections you won't need to do unless you are syndicating content.
09:56And then shows.
09:57Make sure you pick your show page if you have a show that you're associated with.
10:00So let's pick the big wake-up show with Don Chase and Sarah for here in Fayetteville.
10:06Sponsored content right here.
10:08We're going to have another post about this as well.
10:10If this is a sponsored post, if it has anything paid for within it,
10:14all you have to do is add the sponsor's name right here.
10:17So we'll pick Flow Nissan to Fayetteville.
10:20And then you can put the link right here.
10:22These were ones that we've used frequently,
10:25but you can paste in or type in whatever you want.
10:27That's going to add the header to that page.
10:31Everything else here you don't need to do anything with.
10:33We already did our featured image.
10:35So we're all set.
10:37So let's take a look at what this would look like on the final end.
10:40So we have our headline, our talent, our author name there, the image, all of our content, the link,
10:50the category that we associated with this one.
10:53This one's not showing the other categories because I didn't publish it yet.
10:57Let's go ahead and actually change that so that you can see what it would look like published now.
11:06So this is now a live article on our websites.
11:09It does take a couple minutes before it will show up in our ribbon,
11:13but we're going to take a look at what it looks like anyway.
11:15You can now see because we chose the show page,
11:19that has the show page header up on top.
11:22It also has that sponsored by ribbon when we added the sponsor in there.
11:29This also shows the categories that we picked to go into here.
11:33These are the categories that are going to make that ribbon show up.
11:36And then the tags.
11:37So we tagged Tim McGraw on this.
11:39This now makes it so that if I click on that,
11:41it'll take me to any other Tim McGraw content within the site.
11:45That is it. That's the basics on how to get a article together.
11:53We're going to have a little more in depth on some of the other pieces of that,
11:56but those are the key elements for what you're going to need to accomplish.
12:00Happy writing.
