00:00Chrissy!
00:01Hi!
00:02How are you?
00:03I'm good, how are you?
00:05Good, I was just telling everybody earlier, I'm just hanging out over here at Carole Baskins.
00:08I was like, where is he? It looks very tropical.
00:12I'm in your home state of Florida right now.
00:14Are you in actually, like, Tampa?
00:16Yes, I'm in Tampa. Yeah, we're in Tampa right now.
00:18Let me see if I can get rid of this, thanks so I can see you. There you are.
00:21So, let me introduce you to everybody.
00:23Chrissy Metz is on the popular TV show, This Is Us.
00:26She's also an amazing author with This Is Me, which was her book that she put out.
00:31And now, she has a song called Talked to God, which is also frightening.
00:39But we want to know more about that.
00:43No, how was that conversation? No, I'm just kidding.
00:46But, you know, in this realm of things, I feel like that's a very appropriate song.
00:49You know, kind of everybody being in a different headspace with everything going on.
00:53What a timely song for you to put out.
00:54Yeah, interestingly enough, I didn't write it.
00:57It was found on an Ashley McBride writer's retreat.
01:00Okay. Those are always fun.
01:02I mean...
01:03I'll tell you what, nails, you know, facials, the whole deal. Always a blast.
01:06Well, some people...
01:07Some people do write songs on writer's retreats.
01:14Oh, that's right.
01:14But, but anyhow, so it was found on the Ashley McBride writer's retreat and my manager was just sort of like asking, you know, like, do you want to hear whatever songs?
01:24And I'm like, yeah, yeah.
01:25Like, I want to hear them every day.
01:26Like, and, you know, from all different writers and I just fell in love with the song and I felt like it was super appropriate for me because, you know, listen, we need some help sometimes.
01:38And I know what it's like to make a decision and regret it.
01:43I have been married before.
01:45I've been a wife.
01:46I, you know, gosh, I think about people who aren't in my life anymore all the time.
01:51So it just felt super appropriate, like, just to, to be the storyteller of the song.
01:56So, I love that.
01:58I love that.
01:58Now, I kind of, I'm, you kind of did a, you were in a band before this too, right?
02:03Very, very briefly.
02:04I, you know, in the moments of needing to find some sort of creativity, some sort of outlet, I wasn't auditioning often and I surely wasn't booking anything.
02:16I was just trying to be creative.
02:17So, my friends and I, a couple of us who were great musicians, sort of got together and, you know, started just trying to, like, you know, find out what my vibe was.
02:27And that was the hardest part.
02:28It's like I could never find the genre that, like, really fit for me.
02:31And it would always come back to country music.
02:34Sure.
02:34For me, it's just the storytelling of country music and the values of it.
02:39Just, I don't know, it just makes sense to me.
02:42And I grew up with it and it's just, I don't know.
02:45What was that?
02:46What was that when you were in that band?
02:47What was that country song you kept coming back to that you knew was coming up in the set that you're about to cover?
02:51You're like, oh, I'm going to crush this one.
02:53Oh, gosh.
02:54I don't ever feel like I'm going to crush anything.
02:56Come on now.
02:57No, no, I really don't.
02:58There's got to be a powerhouse one for you.
03:01No, there's not.
03:03There's not.
03:04All right.
03:04Well, out of all of them, what do you think you did best?
03:07I can't even answer that.
03:09I don't know.
03:10Confidence.
03:10Where's it at?
03:11No, it's not about confidence.
03:12It's about humility.
03:13It's about, like, you know.
03:15You know.
03:15Um, gosh.
03:18Um, I love singing Hypnotize the Moon, Clay Walker.
03:22Yes.
03:22Look at you.
03:23For me.
03:24Going back.
03:24I like that.
03:25I love some old school stuff.
03:27I mean, of course, I love current country, but.
03:29Right.
03:30And then old, old country.
03:32Um, gosh.
03:33I don't know.
03:33It's so hard to choose.
03:34Don't ask hard questions.
03:35I'm sorry.
03:36I was paid to do that.
03:37I should stop.
03:38Oh, you were?
03:39No, I'm just kidding.
03:39No, not at all.
03:40Um, no, that's so great.
03:42Let's.
03:42If we could talk about This Is Us for a little bit.
03:44I mean.
03:44Yeah.
03:45That show took off.
03:47I mean, it was like I heard about it.
03:49And then I really heard about it really, really quickly.
03:51And I just think, what do you think, you know, because there's sitcoms out there and all
03:54that.
03:54What do you think really changed people to really attach to that?
03:58Because there's so many options, you know, with all the streaming services.
04:01Oh, go ahead.
04:02Go ahead.
04:02Sorry, buddy.
04:03Sorry.
04:03No problem.
04:04We've only had this scheduled for like two weeks or something like that.
04:06No, I'm kidding.
04:07I'm just messing with you.
04:09I'm just testing.
04:11Um, anyway, but yeah.
04:12So what do you think people gravitated towards that show so much?
04:16Well, like I always say, I think that, um, it's sort of given us a blueprint of how
04:20to deal with life on life's terms, right?
04:23Like none of us have given, have been given a handbook of like, okay, when, uh, paternity
04:28issues happen in your life, when weight issues seem to plague your life, when death or illness,
04:33like nobody knows how to handle that.
04:35We are just trying to figure it out as we go.
04:38Um, and being more vulnerable, I think, um, allows that space for other people to open
04:44up about their own trials and tribulations.
04:47Yeah.
04:47And whether you're watching it and you're like, okay, I can't quite talk about it.
04:50But I can relate to it.
04:52Yeah.
04:52It sort of opens up that space to say like, oh, like we're all going through the same
04:56things.
04:57Right.
04:58Well, you know what?
04:58You've been committed for that multiple times, just in this conversation alone.
05:01I'm being serious.
05:02And people say, like, she's just got a beautiful soul.
05:04And she, you know, you are a very accessible person to people.
05:08And that's been a lot of the research I've done before this interview to talk to you
05:11is like, she's just so accessible.
05:13She's so relatable.
05:14And the fact that you can, I mean, it's one thing to have things on a script.
05:18None of us got this figured out.
05:20We're all doing what we're trying to do.
05:22And, um, and it's okay.
05:24Like, it's, it's okay to not know what's going on.
05:27Absolutely.
05:28I mean, you can't say it at a better time than right now.
05:30I mean, there's, you can just take care of yourself right now and, you know, and just
05:34wait for the next moment or the next direction of where we're supposed to do.
05:37So, I mean.
05:38Yeah.
05:38Being present.
05:40It's so crazy.
05:40It's something we do not know how to do because we're constantly like either worrying about
05:45the past or, you know, having anxiety about the future and being present is something
05:49you're like, what the hell is this?
05:52Present, present also known as quarantined.
05:54It's like stopped right here.
05:56Yes.
05:56Like, you know, you got to figure out what's going on.
05:58What have you been doing in the, to stay safe?
06:00Um, honestly, just staying at home.
06:02We are been like, my best friend and I, Donnie, we're super diligent about like cleanliness
06:07and like washing our hands and masks if we have to go out and, you know, it's just super
06:11important because whether or not, you know, you're sick, like you don't know if you're
06:16asymptomatic, right?
06:17Or you don't know if you're going to infect vulnerable people.
06:21So we've just tried to like be very diligent about that.
06:23But in the meantime, you know, we're playing tetherball.
06:27We have yet to plant our garden.
06:29It's coming at some point.
06:31Right.
06:32I don't know what I got myself into y'all.
06:33Um, but, uh, you know, like just trying to be creative.
06:37We've tried to do some rights on zoom and, and, you know, FaceTime, which is challenging.
06:43All the artists have been saying that.
06:44Absolutely.
06:45It's challenging because of the, the energy is not, you know, like it's not quite cyclical
06:49and there's a delay and blah, blah, blah.
06:51So, you know, whatever, listen, whatever can keep us at baseline is what we need to be
06:56doing.
06:57Are you in California right now?
06:58No, I'm in Nashville.
06:59Oh, you're in Nashville.
07:00Okay.
07:00Wow.
07:01You're really getting in there now.
07:02I didn't know if you were, okay, cool.
07:04So I didn't know if you were still doing things out, out in LA right now too.
07:06I mean, I know everything's shut down, but yeah, well, we shut down.
07:10I came here March 12th to finish my album.
07:12Okay.
07:12And then obviously I think the studios are just now starting to open up with all the
07:16precautions.
07:17Um, but yeah, I've been here just trying to get acclimated and then we don't know when
07:23we're going back to this show.
07:24I typically go back in July, but I don't know.
07:28Hopefully.
07:29Hopefully.
07:29Hopefully.
07:30Yeah, absolutely.
07:30Yeah.
07:31Uh, well, I'm glad that you're in Nashville.
07:32Let me ask you this.
07:33Uh, first big, did you book a TV show or a commercial first?
07:37Your big, let's, we can call it a break or just your first, like, okay, I'm starting
07:41to get some traction.
07:41What was it?
07:42A TV show or a commercial?
07:43I never felt like I got traction until this is us.
07:45Let's be honest.
07:46Okay.
07:46That's all right.
07:47That's the actual, that's the right way to think as an actor, right?
07:51Yes.
07:51I mean, I feel that way anyway.
07:53Right.
07:53Yeah.
07:54Um, and I, in no means, I'm like, yeah, I got this still, even though I'm on this great
07:59show.
08:00Um, but one of my really special shows, um, I did an episode of Entourage on the second
08:06season.
08:07Nice.
08:07My scene was with James Cameron and some people who are like huge Entourage fans are
08:12like, oh my God, I know what exactly, what episode, what scene, but let me tell you something.
08:17I almost quit acting that day.
08:20I was so, I couldn't get my line.
08:23What the lines that I auditioned with were not the lines that we did on the show.
08:27And then there's like all these things that are going on in the background.
08:29And even one of the, the background artists was like, um, I think you got to hit your mark
08:34this.
08:34I was like.
08:35The extra.
08:36I'm like, Oh my God, I don't know what I'm doing.
08:39I don't know what I'm doing.
08:40And then I went to do the, to the, the line is like one of the trickiest lines I've ever
08:44ever done in any acting scene in my life.
08:48And I was like, I don't even know what I'm saying anymore.
08:50Like when it becomes just like, yeah.
08:52Jumble mess.
08:53So I freak out.
08:55I go in the bathroom.
08:56I start crying.
08:56I call my manager and I was like, I can't do this.
08:59I am not an actress.
09:00I can't do this.
09:01And she's like, you put your big girl panties on and you figure it out.
09:04And I'm like, so that will always like stick in my mind that like, you have to sort of
09:11work through the uncomfortability and like, you know, there's going to be people who are
09:16going to say all kinds of things, but like, just keep it moving.
09:19Just keep trying to suit up and show up.
09:22So, right.
09:23All right.
09:23So your first big, uh, let's say, let's say showbiz check.
09:29What did you buy?
09:29What was your big purchase?
09:31Okay.
09:31Y'all some, some people know this if, if they're my, my, my, uh, followers on Instagram, cause
09:36I've talked about it before, but I sat in the parking lot at the mall before I went into
09:40the Apple store to buy a laptop because I never owned my own laptop.
09:44Uh, like the, I purchased myself, I got one, but, um, and I was like, I really don't need
09:50it.
09:50I don't need it.
09:51And my boyfriend at the time was like, you kind of do need it.
09:54Like it's a work expense.
09:55And I'm like, I don't know.
09:57I like literally an hour debating, debating if I should get this laptop.
10:02So that was my first big, um, my purchase.
10:05And then I bought my friend a refrigerator and then she, well, I lived with her when
10:13I was broke, broke, broke.
10:15She's the one that gave me money to go to my, this is us audition.
10:18Cause I didn't have enough money.
10:19And I was like, how can I ever repay you?
10:22And she's like, you can't don't even worry about it.
10:24I don't want anything.
10:25And I'm like, don't you need a new fridge?
10:27And she's like, I would love a new fridge.
10:29I thought you'd never ask.
10:32That's awesome.
10:33I love it.
10:34Well, we're so excited for you.
10:36I mean, I'm so excited to hear your stuff and just, I think this is a perfect, even
10:41though it's a weird time right now, the trajectory of us getting to know you as a person versus
10:45us getting to know you as an artist, then a person is a really neat thing.
10:49Cause you know, in being in this business for 15 years, I'm always getting to know, hear
10:53a song and then I get to meet the person.
10:55And sometimes it matches up and sometimes it doesn't.
10:57So the fact that we're getting to see a real side of you and then a song, uh, like talk
11:01to God is just a, um, it's a cool transition for you.
11:04I'm excited for you.
11:06Yeah.
11:06I'm really excited.
11:08And I'm, I'm really excited about the other songs that are going to be out on the EP.
11:12Um, hopefully we'll get the album done sooner rather than later, but yeah.
11:15Um, EP is that when, when's the EP out?
11:17Um, I think it's going to be within a couple of months, but we'll have like another song
11:22coming out.
11:23I've heard, um, today I had a meeting that it should be coming out pretty soon.
11:27Good.
11:28All right.
11:29Good.
11:29You can't give us any hints.
11:30I don't even know.
11:31Like, I don't know the exact date yet.
11:33All right.
11:33How about this?
11:34Do you, is there a song on the EP that we got to listen to besides talk to God?
11:38I mean, what's your fave besides that one?
11:41Oh my God.
11:42Um, besides talking to God, um, gosh, um, probably the one that's coming up next.
11:51Well, what is that?
11:52You got to give me something.
11:54Um, uh, it's about, um, a breakup.
11:58It's about a breakup.
11:59About a breakup.
12:00Um, yeah.
12:02I don't know.
12:03Um, I'm not trying to get you in trouble.
12:06I'm not trying to get you in trouble.
12:07I know, but I'm like, how can I like tell you without telling you?
12:10Yeah.
12:10It's about a breakup.
12:11Yeah.
12:12Wait, so are you from Tampa originally?
12:14I'm not.
12:14I'm from California originally.
12:16No.
12:16Yeah.
12:17So you want to, I'll give you a, this is not about me by any means.
12:20No one's going to care about this, but I will tell you, um, I was on a show called
12:25Victorious with Ariana Grande.
12:26Wait, wait, wait.
12:27Okay.
12:28Okay.
12:28Okay.
12:28This is strange.
12:29Okay.
12:29So I used to be on the team that represented Ariana.
12:33Okay.
12:33So this is before she started singing.
12:35Yes.
12:36Well, no, no.
12:36She's always been singing.
12:37She was like on Broadway.
12:39Right.
12:39So yeah.
12:40I'm a pop star.
12:40Right.
12:41Right.
12:41So she was on, so I was on for like, uh, one episode, just like you were talking about
12:46your entourage thing.
12:47Right.
12:47So I went on there and I had a scene with her and I played this guy cause they went to
12:51an artsy school.
12:52So I played this guy that was from college that came down and was a teacher of stage
12:56fighting.
12:57I did the, I was like, um, the stunt man that taught them how to do stage fighting.
13:02So it was this one where her and, uh, uh, God, I'm forgetting her name right now.
13:07So, but, um, Ariana and, um, uh, not Victoria, but the other one, uh, is it Jeanette, maybe?
13:16Yeah.
13:16Jeanette McCurdy.
13:17Yes.
13:18Anyway, they have like a little thing where she fakes an injury.
13:20Like she got hit in the face and tries to get Victoria and in whatever, in trouble, whatever.
13:25The whole deal is.
13:25I remember being on this show though, and hearing Ariana sing on the soundstage.
13:30And I remember asking her and I'm like, are you going to like be a singer?
13:34Like, what's the deal?
13:35And she's like, nah, I just like acting.
13:37She's like, I like acting.
13:38That's what she told us.
13:39That's what she told me.
13:39Like on the set.
13:40Now she may have just been messing with me, but then five years later or whatever, she
13:44just, you know, it's Ariana Grande.
13:47Yeah.
13:47Well, she came from Broadway.
13:49She was doing a 13 on Broadway, Jason Robert Brown's, um, musical and like, but she's
13:55always, like, if you see tapes of her when she's a little baby, like she's always been
13:59able to sing her face off.
14:00Yeah.
14:00I had no business being there.
14:02It was all like these super talented kids.
14:04Wait.
14:04Okay.
14:04So you don't want to be an actor?
14:06Like you wanted to be an actor?
14:08Uh, I was doing it for a while as I was doing some radio and TV stuff.
14:11I did like a EA sports commercial.
14:13I did.
14:14I was on, uh, ABC.
14:15I was on ABC Family's Greek for a couple episodes.
14:18So I did.
14:19So I did a little bit.
14:20I, um, I was, uh, just, you know, just who's that frat guy over there?
14:24Pretty much.
14:25And then, isn't that so-and-so's boyfriend?
14:28That was like kind of my, uh, those were my one lines that I had.
14:32And, uh, it was, uh, it was fun.
14:34I had a good time.
14:35And then I just, opportunity came up to get back into, uh, radio and some opportunities.
14:40And I just kind of chose to do that.
14:41But I've always wanted to, uh, keep my hand in that somehow, some way, but it's, uh, it's
14:47been fun.
14:47Where were you, where were you raised?
14:49In LA?
14:50I was raised in Orange County.
14:51So I grew up, yeah, born in Ray.
14:53Born in Ray.
14:53I didn't call it the OC.
14:57That would be different if I called it the OC.
14:58Right, right.
14:58Uh, I grew up in Orange County, then went to, um, uh, San Diego for school and then started
15:03radio, then LA for some things.
15:05And then, um, Orlando, then Texas, and then back now to Tampa.
15:11So.
15:11Do you like Tampa?
15:13I love it.
15:13I love it.
15:14I live in St. Pete to be exact, but yeah, I love it out here.
15:16Yeah.
15:16I love it over here.
15:17I went on my book tour through there and I, it was so nice.
15:20We were like, why can't we stay here more?
15:22Like.
15:22I know.
15:23A couple more days.
15:24So you're home.
15:25You're from Homestead, right?
15:26I was born in Homestead.
15:28Then you went to Japan.
15:30Yeah.
15:30Mm-hmm.
15:30For nine years.
15:31And then Gainesville for like, until I was 20.
15:34And then LA.
15:35Very nice.
15:36Yeah.
15:36Well, I got to end it with this question.
15:38Yes.
15:38I want to hear about your, uh, Turks and Caicos jet skiing experience.
15:42No, you don't.
15:43No, you don't.
15:43No, you don't.
15:43No, you don't.
15:44Um, let me give you a little background because people might have seen this on Jimmy Fallon
15:49where she told this story.
15:51But prior to going on a jet ski, she took some, uh, two preliminary lessons.
15:57Correct.
15:58Why don't you go ahead and talk about that, baby?
15:59On the YouTubes.
16:00On the YouTubes, folks.
16:01Here's the thing.
16:02My really, my best friend, Donnie, has always ridden jet skis.
16:07And he's like, Chrissy, you're going to be fine.
16:09What are you doing?
16:09Like, watching tutorials on YouTube?
16:11I'm like, yes, I am.
16:12Yes, I am.
16:13Because I know that when we get down there, they're going to be like, oh, here's your key
16:15and just let me get, no.
16:18And here's the thing.
16:19We're in open water.
16:21Who knows what's going to happen?
16:22I need to be well-versed on what's going to happen.
16:24Anyhow, guys, I got on the doggone jet ski and was so afraid.
16:29Like, look at your face.
16:30You're like, oh, God.
16:30No, I'm just waiting where this is going.
16:32I was literally like, meh, meh, for like probably 30 minutes.
16:39Meanwhile, Donnie's like, shoo, shoo, like splashing me.
16:42And I'm like, oh, I can't handle this.
16:44Yeah.
16:44It was, honestly, it took me probably about 45 minutes.
16:47We were only on there for like an hour and a half.
16:49I was like, this is, it was cool once I got the gist.
16:52Okay.
16:53But y'all, it was.
16:55It was kind of like being on Entourage.
16:58It was, it was something like that.
16:59Yeah.
17:00I mean, I can't say that I was in the honey video, Mariah Carey honey video, because I
17:04would just, but what's.
17:07What a reference right there.
17:09I love that.
17:10I know.
17:11I know.
17:12So, yeah, it was very fun.
17:14But I have to say it was very stressful.
17:16I feel more equipped now to do it again.
17:19But it only has to be in three feet deep water.
17:23Really?
17:23And something, well, it has to be water that I could like eventually like get.
17:27So you can bail?
17:28You can bail?
17:29Yes.
17:29Okay.
17:30Yes.
17:31And also, I need to see the bottom of it.
17:32I'm not going to no Florida lakes.
17:34No, no.
17:35I'm not doing it.
17:36All right.
17:37Well, if you come to Tampa, we'll figure out something that's shallow that you can go in.
17:40Yeah.
17:40Even like shallow ocean, like a little shallow ocean.
17:43Perfect.
17:44I will make it happen.
17:45Excited.
17:46Well, plug the song.
17:47Plug the song and the EP.
17:49Yes.
17:49Talking to God.
17:50I don't have a title for the EP just yet, but my single Talking to God, you can check it
17:54out on all streaming platforms, on the YouTube, wherever you want to access music.
17:59And I'm so glad that everybody's loving it.
18:01Love it.
18:02Well, we appreciate you, Chrissy.
18:03You're the best.
18:04Keep up your attitude and just being you, okay?
18:06You too.
18:07Bye.
18:08I'm going to see you on set.
18:08Watch, watch.
18:09I would love it.
18:11Hey, you need someone.
18:12You can know where to call me.
18:12You need me to stand in and just be in the background.
18:15Yeah.
18:16I'll tell you where to hit your mark.
18:18How about that?
18:19Like that one background person.
18:21How bad is that?
18:22Okay.
18:23Wow.
18:23I can't believe they said it to you.
18:25I can't believe they said that to you.
18:27That's so funny.
18:27She was trying to help.
18:28She's trying to help.
18:28I got you.
18:29All right, girl.
18:30Talk to you later.
18:30Take care.
18:31Take care.
18:31Bye.
