00:00we're we're um in a tour bus today i know it's beautiful that is a tour bus
00:05is that better that's perfect it's awesome i used to go to like the uh the rv um just to walk in
00:13them like yeah i go in the rv shows like wow he's really fancy but you'd never buy one but like
00:18that's the one i would want to buy right look let's be very very clear i did not buy this
00:24it's good every year this these suckers i had no idea how expensive these things could be
00:31these are like two or three million dollar buses you're like that is why you rent a bus for a tour
00:37and you call it a day that's the move you see it's like owning a boat it sounds like a good idea until
00:42you actually do it in which case oh no terrible decision yeah yeah yeah yeah well i love it i
00:48love sleeping on the bus it's got that nice little rock and roll you know just kind of glides you to
00:52sleep it's good that's awesome that's great uh so let's uh let's talk about um uh first of all
00:59so this is i don't think i've seen this before you're you're it's a two-parter sometimes like
01:04they'll release an album right get 11 songs 10 songs whatever it might be and then there'll be
01:08that one extra single and then they'll make you buy it again at target you've been flat out honest
01:13you're like this is lauren daigle this is the album but there's more coming it's the extension of the
01:17album yes yes so so we we wanted this whole process to be an entire one solid right right
01:26i recorded all the songs in real time together and i remember uh julie came in julie greenwald and
01:34she said hey lauren i got a question for you would you want to have this record release half at one
01:40point and then half at the other and i was like oh and she said just think about it you're a records
01:46girl like i love albums if i'm gonna sit and listen to a record i want to listen from the top
01:50to the bottom like i love it and um she said but asking people to listen to 23 songs
01:57can get a little bit grueling in the whole screening era and i was like no don't don't
02:04singles shame me right now don't singles shame me i love records and so uh she said what do you
02:12think about cutting it in half and i was like i don't know let me think about it and when i went
02:17home i thought man i really don't want tracks like 14 to 19 to get lost you know because of people
02:23getting listening fatigue or they got to jump out the car because they got to go pick up the kids or
02:27whatever like i want people to be able to sit and enjoy this so um and if you were a fan of my last
02:33record it's been five years since i released a record so to be able to have two releases for people to
02:39get excited with and to have um like a record that they could live with marinate and then by the time
02:45they kind of get that one in their veins another one is coming out to complete the whole story
02:49that was kind of the vision it's not it's not your fault you have so much material right yeah
02:54it is something songs and i was like how am i supposed to cut this down to like 15 songs
03:01i was like there's no way like i love i love it too much you know so um
03:06what do you do let me do 23 what what do you do with the songs that you record and you're writing
03:13them and you love them and and they're so special to you and you have to say nope you don't make the
03:18album do you save them and then say you know what i like this one and i'm gonna release it today or
03:24tomorrow you know what do you do with those songs okay so i always believe a song will land right when
03:30it's meant to like a song knows the exact day that it's supposed to arrive uh by writing it and it
03:36knows the exact day that it's supposed to be recorded and it knows the exact it's like you know
03:40god's just sitting up there orchestrating it all well i i remember there's this one song on the
03:46the uh back half that's about to come out that we actually wrote seven years ago and i remember
03:53thinking when i actually hand over this song to be put on a record i will know that that record is like
04:01one of the treasures of my heart um and so i waited and waited and waited for seven years to be like
04:07i want it to be the right time at the right for the right record and it ended up landing on this one
04:14i'll give you a little tidbit it's called it's a song called turbulent skies and i wrote it
04:18like yeah seven seven or eight years ago and um so so they sit my they sit in an archive and you know
04:28every time i go and make a record i go back to the archive and say is there anything in there that
04:32seems like it would make sense for what we're working on and um yeah i that one seemed to be
04:38one of them there's a couple but i also love like having fresh material from experiences that i'm
04:44currently going through um to also be represented on there so it's a little amalgamation your policy
04:51on music's my policy on uh computer wires like you know i'm not on this cable i want to throw it out
04:56but like i'm going to need it one day i'm just going to keep it here you just you never know when
05:01you're going to need it exactly uh lauren this is um this is if you count the the christmas album this
05:05is your fourth slash four b album it's a and it's a self-titled out why this one to be the self-titled
05:14i'm always curious when the first one's not the self-titled album what makes this one the lauren
05:19day album i think there was so much that we all experienced through the pandemic i feel like there's
05:26um just a moment in time where i was like oh i feel like i'm being remade i feel like i'm being rewired
05:33and what a lot of people don't know is that in the very beginning of my career i was signed off of like
05:39a happenstance oh no my the lead singer of this band that i was singing with got an emergency
05:45appendectomy the morning of a showcase that we were supposed to sing for this record label
05:49and i didn't have any material or anything so they said hey can you just step in and sing lead
05:54i say one song and thing got signed and i just remember thinking to myself i'm having to learn
06:01everything from scratch like the second i walked into the studio i was like i don't have any clue of how to
06:07sing into a studio mic um i don't know what any of these buttons do i don't know how to express my
06:13ideas in the studios that and like within 15 months we had a record out you know same with like singing
06:19in front of crowds like i had to make all my mistakes in front of people because i didn't have
06:24all these 10 000 hours of childhood to like kind of you know pour in and do it it just really was uh
06:31learning in front of people so that the reason for the reason why i'm telling the backstory is
06:36because i feel like they're first in the second record uh like look up child and how can it be
06:43those records were me really learning how do i communicate my artistic ideas how do i um what
06:50like chords do i love and like that suit my voice the best and all of these nuances that you pick up along
06:56the way i was finally able to pour what i've learned into this record and um so that's why i decided to
07:03actually make it a self-titled record wow that's that's beautiful what uh what are i'd love to know
07:09what artists are listening to like what are you listening to on your bus because everyone's like
07:15i don't listen to myself so what are you listening to though because we're listening to you we're definitely
07:19judging you this is this is going to be the worst like every person is like oh my gosh you're an
07:25artist you must be listening to so much good music you might be like this underground person that has
07:29this insight onto all this i'm like unless you're like jay-z and justin timberlake like they're getting
07:34music that nobody's ever heard of before hey this is hilarious i actually just listen not only this
07:42i mean i listen all sorts of music but lately i've been listening to spa music really spa yes yeah
07:52yeah there's no there's no horns no horn section yes it's just rama dasa yes not glenn stephani
07:59it's zen no it's zen and i i literally this morning my friend walks in uh this back room and she was she
08:07looked at me and she's like what is what is that sound i was like oh sorry i'm just that's
08:12listening to my spa music like getting my day started he was like what are you doing and he's
08:17like look i'm telling you it is the trick of the trade like i'm driving around everybody's like all
08:22mad and upset in la traffic or whatever and i'm over here just like zen in my brain out i'm like oh
08:28my gosh i love this it just like turns everything off because i live in such a loud environment so
08:34i've been listening to spa music lately that's really great because on my way to work i listen to
08:39like dateline so like maybe i should do spa i'll be in a much better mood definitely yeah
08:45mellow i don't know yeah that's that's hilarious that is my plan i'm like turn down the noise yes
08:51chill out for a second i know you're you're going on tour no vegas date kind of bump you do have a
08:55vegas uh there's a little bit of history of vegas though it was idle in 2012 you made it to the
09:00vegas round you didn't make it and i honestly think that is the best case scenario for america because
09:07you look i mean you know you know dot tree dot tree lost right didn't all the losers do really
09:12well right really well i know i know carrie underwood kelly clarkson those girls they're
09:19the outliers like yes holy moly they have made incredible careers but yeah i remember the first
09:25okay this is my one of my favorite um this is going to show like yeah home go you was raised in the
09:32swamp okay i remember getting to vegas so i'm from louisiana i got to vegas never been there in my
09:40life didn't know anything about it and i rock up we stayed at the aria hotel on the street and i
09:47remember i opened my door and the curtains go they just slide open by like by the door opening it was
09:55like a queue and i called my family i was like you're never going to believe the grandeur of
10:03these hotels and stuff my mind was just absolutely blown um and thus i've been back to vegas uh over
10:10and over and over again for shows and different things we we actually just played in vegas a couple
10:16like maybe three months ago or something we played at um resorts world
10:21awesome resorts yeah and then i i jumped over because american idol was next door and they're
10:29like hey you want to come pop in and then i surprised this girl her name's megan danielle
10:34and we did a little i did a little pop-up cameo surprise and that's awesome that's uh for her with
10:40her during her audition that's great and so you have a lot of ties and you have a lot of ties to
10:46american night like to i guess singing competitions as a whole you were on the voice you were on american
10:51idol then you were also a uh not a coach but um what are they called a mentor yeah yeah do you love
11:01do you love the singing shows or are you bitter because like it kicked you off and you're like i don't
11:07know like this is awful but i'm like okay my dream came true with it or without you know and but what
11:15i will say is those there is a lot of training that does happen in those environments like i would lose
11:22my i lost my voice in hollywood week like i was like what in the world how are these people sustaining
11:27their voice because there is so much going on and that's kind of true you know that's how it is when
11:32you're out on the road you have like i'm staring right now at a massive dirt patch like everything's
11:38dirt and that's like oh it's so dusty and dry and you just have to keep your voice going you know
11:43so there's a lot of training that really does come out of those shows um but i do think too
11:51my favorite thing was always the camaraderie like the the friends that i made on that show i had for
11:56years and years and years to follow so that's uh that's probably the best part yeah that's awesome
12:00yeah and now you started the whole idol thing i think that was the year that simon cowell left
12:04right that was the first year for that or was it the last year for cowell um i was there with cowell
12:09i was there oh before it was after paula it was after paula it was after paula there we go in 2009
12:18yep actually where where did you audition where did you audition for for that the first time was atlanta
12:24um and i that was the first time that i it was like that light bulb moment of wait can i actually
12:31sing wait what is happening because at the time i only sang for like 200 people at our local church
12:39or our local fair or you know whatever it was there was nothing happening and you're just hoping that
12:45everyone's not trying to be really nice and say that you can sing exactly yeah yes i so i went to
12:51american auto thinking like are these people liars or are they telling me the truth so i ended up
12:56showing up in these i remember um making it through the first round and that there were 10 000 people
13:02in that first round and i was shook i looked at my dad and i was like are you kidding me my dad came
13:09with me i showed him that golden ticket and i could not believe it because to go they deduced that
13:17from 10 000 to like i think it was like 200 people or something they it narrowed down so much so i was
13:24like whoa okay i'm at least good enough for like the first round of american idol and then as we went
13:30like i got seven rounds into it and i remember thinking this is this is the beginning of something
13:35i don't know what it is but it's the beginning of something yeah i was i worked american idol that
13:39year like interviewing people that were auditioning in the boston area and like there's 200 people out of
13:43the 10 000 but like of the 200 a hundred of them they're putting in because they know they're going
13:48to get destroyed so really like exactly back then like simon was still doing his simon thing that was
13:54she bangs time so like you know it's just a very very cool i'm thinking i hope i'm on the right side of
14:01the fence for this and then when i when i got caught i looked at simon i said simon cowell i'm giving you
14:09the moment to be mean to me like tell me why i'm getting kicked off and he was like oh just come back
14:15next year and i was like tell me why i'm getting kicked off and he wouldn't he was like i was like
14:21there's there's three other blonde girls that made it and i'm the blonde girl that didn't tell me why
14:27and he because you know it's all casting so i said he said well you just there's just not enough
14:33slots it just wasn't your year i was like i need a critique boy he wouldn't do it he was like just
14:41come back next year so oh my god that's the thing that could ever happen i still say it was great i
14:47couldn't tell you any of the last 10 winners facts not one i know it worked out it worked out well i've
14:53enjoyed it that's great we've been playing thank god i do uh here on the station uh and we're loving
15:00it we're loving seeing uh that there's going to be more music coming down soon with the full album
15:04the full self-titled album i've ever seen i you know i gotta ask this because you know let's get
15:09you're a christian artist that that's making the move in a mainstream quote-unquote radio
15:14your connection with faith i am i got my my mom was a born-again christian my dad was a non-practicing
15:19catholic uh i'm like faith-wise super confused what's your connection to faith what got you
15:26really connected to that and make it such an important part of your life oh that's that's a
15:31great question well people always say uh like how what was your story and it was food okay so here's
15:39the deal i remember when i was a kid i'm such a fan of you i know that like a lot of christ is like
15:45great juice or whatever but like okay continue like lauren be a little more like religious i'm
15:50like yeah okay yeah this is what it is so i i grew up my parents with the church but we were we were
15:57always like fun it wasn't like a rules regulated intensity right we my parents were fun and had a
16:04good life and it was great so i never i don't there was only one season where i remember thinking
16:11church and religion was like this like oppressive thing um and it was and i would cry every single
16:18day going to or every single week going to church and my mom looked at my dad one day and she's like
16:22we're done with this we gotta we gotta move on you know just because it's meant to be fun and enjoyable
16:30and pure and so uh fast forward i remember sitting in this church and i looked at these crackers the
16:39crackers and wine or crackers and grapefruit juice that they drink and stuff and i wasn't getting
16:45any and i looked at my mom and i was like what's this about like i was seven years old and i remember
16:49thinking why are you giving me this and she was like oh well they want you to be baptized you know
16:54you gotta be baptized for this and i was like well put me in the water because i'm going to be
16:58eating some food and that's literally what happened i've had this exact same thing i'm at the church
17:04you're like well you can't get it you map it back to i was like why the heck not what everyone else is
17:08eating this is not fair it can't hurt i was like a midday snack you're taking a midday snack with a
17:14seven-year-old like let's get this drink and and i actually think like it was god's sense of humor
17:19with me because i'm such a foodie and i think he was just like yeah girl i'm gonna show you who i am
17:25through food and i just i did that is really how i kind of got into it but but i went in high school i
17:32went through a circumstance where um i was placed on homebound for two years and i remember thinking god like
17:38if you are real if this if this whole thing is real like i give me a way to share hope with the
17:45world like get me out of this situation and it was in that season that he started showing me i wasn't
17:51even singing he started showing me tour buses and charts and songs and all and people's faces and
17:57crowds and i remember thinking i'm losing my mind i'm getting cabin fever like y'all need to check
18:02me into the psych hospital and i was like god if this is you like if this is real just show me
18:08and it was like moment after moment there was just these little things that would happen
18:12um where all the doors were aligned and open right and so i was i remember thinking this is
18:18exactly what it would look like in those dreams this is exactly what it would look like in that vision
18:22or whatever and so through that i remember just saying god whatever music whatever it looks like
18:29because my mom put me in voice lessons to just stay out of depression i started getting really
18:35depressed i'm clearly a people person i love to talk to people and i was in total isolation and so
18:41um she kind of like was like do you want to do voice lessons or something and i said yeah get me i
18:47i needed some type of outlet and in the process of that i feel like i just started getting closer
18:54and closer to jesus and learning what actual hope is like i mean you know when you're a 16 year old
19:01and everybody's going out and driving and having this you know newfound freedom and you're laying in a
19:07bed like yeah it's definitely not fun and it'll teach you a lot about yourself yeah and so i needed
19:13that hope and that hope came for me and and so i remember saying i'll share that hope with the rest
19:19of the world for the rest of my life whether it's music whether i'm a school teacher whatever it looks
19:23like like that's my plan so that's how i collided with i love that yeah i love that so much but we're
19:30so excited for you we love the songs can't wait to hear the second half and what one more time what
19:35was the song that you said seven years is going to be out in september uh that one was turbulent skies
19:41okay seven years ago okay finally fresh out the oven yes we put on a real low sous vide for a long time
19:50but it's ready the crock pot it's gonna fall off the bone she loves her food it's true lauren dagel
19:58it is a pleasure talking to you on your amazing tour bus that you didn't have to pay for that's
20:02the way to be thanks for joining us we love talking to you thanks lauren oh thank you thanks for having me
