00:00Hi, welcome to In the Doghouse with Gloria. I am Kristen Herman. This is Gloria, of course,
00:26the star of our show. And with us today is Dr. Katina Pingakis. She is from BCA Knightswood
00:31Animal Hospital. And today, because it's August, we are celebrating Doggist. And Doggist is the
00:37month where we celebrate the birthdays of shelter dogs because we don't really know when they were
00:41born. Gloria is a shelter dog. We don't know what her birthday is. So we celebrate it in Doggist.
00:46And with any celebration comes treats. Humans, pets, everybody. What are some great treats that
00:52you would say we might even have in our fridge that dogs would love and can help to celebrate
00:57their special day? That's a great question. So the first thing that I like to mention when we talk
01:01about treats for pets, treats are great, but they shouldn't make up more than 10% of the calories
01:06that your dog has per day. Some really great treats that are low-calorie are carrots. My parents' dog
01:14Zoe really loves them because of the crunchiness with carrots. And since they're low-calorie,
01:20they're something that if your dog is trying to lose a little bit of weight, it's something
01:24that you can replace more fatty treats with. Yeah, absolutely. And easy to find and inexpensive
01:29food. Absolutely. Now what would you say are some common foods that we may not know are harmful
01:34to our pets that we eat maybe, but that could really hurt these guys? Yeah. Grapes and raisins
01:39are a really big one to watch out for. They cause kidney failure actually in dogs, which is certainly
01:45very serious. And grapes and raisins can be sneakily found in some baked goods like cookies
01:50and bread. So make sure that you keep those away from your dogs at home. That's a really
01:55good point. Cause yeah, you'd think grapes, fruit, you know, would be great for dogs. Not
01:59good. What would you say we should do if pets do get into something like that? I know there
02:04are these great videos online of dogs getting into the trash or, you know, peeking into your purse,
02:08which every dog loves to stick their nose in there. What should you do if something like
02:12that happens? Yeah. So since every toxin or food that can disagree with dogs a little bit,
02:19it might be a little bit different. And the best thing to do is contact your veterinarian
02:23or you can call the ASPCA poison control line and they can advise you on what to do.
02:28Well, thank you so much for joining us. It's In the Dog House with Gloria. Happy doggest, everybody.
