00:00At the prime of her life, Yi Zilin was loud and outgoing, but the 28-year-old is now a shadow of
00:08her former self as she lies on the hospital bed with the steady beeping of the heart monitor,
00:14the only sign that she's breathing. On September 19th last year, Yi's boyfriend Max Goh received
00:22the terrible news that she had been involved in a horrific crash on the Kuala Lumpur Karak Highway
00:27while driving back from her hometown in Kemaman, Terengganu. The crash left Yi with a punctured
00:33skull and severe brain trauma. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, a neurosurgeon confirmed that
00:41she had fallen into a chronic vegetative state and the chances of her making a full recovery
00:46are extremely slim. I talked to the fire department, the officer that actually had to come and
00:52rescue her from the car wreckage. They mentioned that she was bleeding a lot when I got to the
01:02hospital. By the time I got to the hospital in Kuantan, she's already gone through like 13 pints
01:09of blood.
01:10However, Goh and Yi's family are not giving up hope. Yi's mother is now preparing to bring her
01:17daughter home to Kampar Pirak, determined to provide her with dedicated round-the-clock care.
01:23A talented digital artist, Yi made a name for herself after graduating from Dazen Academy of Art.
01:30Her vibrant illustrations were featured in the Kuala Lumpur Art Book Fair and the 8th China Illustration
01:36Biennial and Illusboom Illustration Festival.
01:40Her friends know her as this very positive, loud, happy, positive kind of person.
01:52And yeah, all that is just kind of stolen from her because of the accident.
02:00The house is awfully quiet without her around.
02:10Those who want to lend a helping hand can visit Honey in the Rock, a restaurant in Damansara
02:15Kim, Petaling Jaya, to purchase a tote bag printed with one of Yi's illustrations.
02:21Or bank your donation to Persatuan Kesaksamaan Demi Kedamaian Rakyat Sejagat with the reference
02:27donation to Zerlin.
02:32Natasha Buse and Tan Chin Tung, FMT.
