The Grand Fishing Adventure S01E01
Transcript
00:00When the fish hits the net, it's a very safe bet, it's Zamora.
00:06Bobby Zamora.
00:09Don't give up your day job, Al, that's for sure.
00:14Two friends.
00:16I'm glad you give me the head end.
00:18On a fishing bucket list tour.
00:20Lovely fish.
00:22Footballing fisherman Bobby Zamora.
00:24That is the greatest fishing moment of my life.
00:27And me, Ali Hamidi.
00:28Oh, yeah!
00:31Oh, he's got it!
00:32We're kicking off in the Great British Isles.
00:35Look at that coastline.
00:37Visiting some of its most iconic angling venues.
00:40It's more like the Cope of Gabbana.
00:42Living it up Bankside.
00:44This is incredible.
00:45Ours is not looking like that, is it?
00:47And we'll be catching some of Britain's biggest and best fish.
00:51Wow.
00:52UK, thank you.
00:54Got my new PB.
00:55Big cow!
00:56This is the Grand Fishing Adventure.
01:00Oh, my God.
01:01I think we've got an absolute giant on here.
01:05Love it, pal.
01:06England, known for its iconic cities, quintessential villages and some of the most beautiful countryside and coastlines on the entire planet.
01:33Our seas are home to over 350 fish species, from a shanny to sharks, around 50 freshwater species, from sticklebacks to sturgeon.
01:45And there's an estimated 1.3 million passionate anglers in the UK that fish for them, including Zamo and myself.
01:53Give me some moves, Bob.
02:00Come on.
02:03Colin.
02:04Come on.
02:05It's a bit you, doesn't it?
02:06Yeah.
02:07No, I'm a bit more light.
02:08On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited are you?
02:22Is this better than a cup final?
02:24Oh, you didn't play in any cup finals?
02:25Yeah, I did.
02:27Are you joking?
02:29Just didn't win any cup finals.
02:31Oh, didn't you?
02:32This is like winning the cup final, though, going fishing with me, no?
02:35It's a fantastic chance for me to experience and learn from the greatest.
02:40So I've been retired now for a while.
02:48With this free time, I really want to make the most of my fishing.
02:51It was limited opportunities when I could play, limited opportunities to see what I could see around the country.
02:55But now I have a chance to go to the lakes I've always wanted to go to, catch the fish I've always wanted to catch.
03:00And this right here now is one of those.
03:02Our first destination is in deepest, darkest Shropshire.
03:08We were heading to an enchanted lake, a hidden gem, near to Market Drayton.
03:13I'm excited. I am excited.
03:16And so was I, as we'd arrived.
03:20Sutton Lake, one of the last remaining strongholds of enormous true crucians in the UK.
03:26This 40-year-old farm lake was stocked with lots of one-inch crucians 16 years ago.
03:32Many still survive today, with loads over two pounds, several over three,
03:37and a couple that have topped the mighty four-pound barrier,
03:41which is just shy of the UK record of four pounds, 14 ounces,
03:46a lot bigger than my half a pound PB and bobs of just six ounces.
03:51Oh, this is something very, very magnificent.
03:55Because targeting big crucians is pretty much impossible in this country now.
04:00So rare, but if you were going to paint a picture of a lake that held them,
04:05this is it, right here.
04:07Absolute stunning lake, and we know that there's big fish in here as well.
04:11Look, it's lovely chatting to you, but we've got rods to set up.
04:14Let's make the most of it.
04:15Yeah, 24 hours to catch the biggest crucian of our lives.
04:19Let's be honest, there ain't a big target to make.
04:21What is the target? Are we sitting one?
04:23Let's go two pounds.
04:24Two pounds.
04:26So two pounds a target, desperate for that, personally and as a team,
04:30but we know what's in here, and they are massive.
04:33Look, to catch a two-pounder would be good,
04:35but deep down inside the paws of Ali Hamedi, I'm going to catch a three-pounder.
04:40We wasted no time, and I had just the set-up that I hoped would bank us a PB.
04:47Cool, there you go. Have a look at that.
04:48So this is a hybrid-style feeder.
04:51It takes a small amount of groundbait in the base of it.
04:53Some peters over the top, and in that,
04:55we've got a sort of really fishy black groundbait.
04:59We've also got a green one.
05:00Crucians love, for some reason, fish mill green groundbaits,
05:04and then we've got a cereal one.
05:05So three different types.
05:06That should fizz up on the bottom and really get them to hone in,
05:10and then on the top of it,
05:11there's literally one real morsel of food they can get in their mouth,
05:15and that's a red boilie.
05:16I'll also try a yellow one.
05:18They're both soaked in different juices.
05:20They're six mill in size, really delicate, very attractive.
05:23I just hope it catches me.
05:25The biggest crucian of my life.
05:27Wicked.
05:28Bob was using the same set-up and bait as me
05:31to target those wily old cypranids.
05:35Ready to rock and roll.
05:37And we've brought our stealthy secret weapons with us
05:40to get our rigs out.
05:41Because crucians love foliage,
05:43they're living almost like a perch.
05:45They live right under structure,
05:48tight into the bank,
05:49and this is all overgrown,
05:50so you're not going to be able to cast there very easily.
05:52So we're going to use what's called a baiting pole,
05:55and we're going to be able to put a feeder in it
05:57and slide right under the bushes
05:59and delicately tip the feeder
06:01with the loose feed onto the bottom.
06:05Wicked.
06:06That's it.
06:06They've got no chance, have they?
06:08The rods then went onto our bite alarms,
06:10and the whole process was then repeated
06:13with our second rods.
06:15That is in amongst them.
06:17All the rods were now delicately on the dance floor,
06:20and whilst we waited for the party to start,
06:23we took the opportunity to sort the accommodation for the night
06:26as we were fishing 24 hours straight through.
06:33That's the shelter done.
06:35Come on with crucians.
06:42Crucians, mystical, picky, cute.
06:47They love dawn, they love dusk,
06:49so we've got to be at our fishing best
06:51when those moments of opportunity arise.
06:54Roll on the evening.
06:57Bite time.
07:08Fish on.
07:10Was this the first crucian
07:12or another species?
07:14Yes.
07:16Please be a crucian.
07:17Please be a crucian.
07:20Sounds like one hook.
07:21Oh, it is a crucian.
07:22It's well hooked.
07:24Oh, I think I've done my two-pound target already.
07:27Oh, go on now.
07:28Go on, son.
07:29Go on.
07:30Go on.
07:30Oh, I went from zero to hero
07:36in about two seconds.
07:38Get a look on that, big boy.
07:41Whoosh.
07:42What a specimen.
07:44I've never seen a crucian that size in my life.
07:46I mean, just what's in our net at the minute
07:48is madness.
07:49Blow my mind.
07:50I don't know how big it is.
07:51Was it over the two-pound target?
07:54Go on, lad.
07:56Oh, we'll take that.
07:572.14.
07:59Target done.
08:00Smashed it.
08:02Look at that.
08:03That is absolutely wicked.
08:07Dorsal.
08:07Hold the dorsal up.
08:08Show the rounded dorsal.
08:09Look, the tip of that dorsal.
08:10Look.
08:10That's where it's rounded.
08:12That's the difference, you know,
08:14and they're just absolute characters.
08:18Honestly, that is twice the size
08:22of probably the biggest one I've ever caught.
08:24I've ever seen.
08:24I've ever seen.
08:25Yeah.
08:26Mega, mate.
08:27Thank you, little fella.
08:30The adulation is just miniature perfection.
08:33It's a giant of the miniature world.
08:35Mega, 2.14.
08:37Get in there.
08:39Go on, mate.
08:40You are an absolute,
08:41one of the best fish I've ever caught.
08:51We just needed Bob to catch a 2.00 plus
08:54for it to be crucians complete.
08:56But would it happen?
09:02Oh, come on, Bob.
09:06It looks like a perfect early morning wake-up call for Zamo.
09:10I don't think it's going to beat Ali's, but I do think it might just scrape two pounds
09:24and definitely a PB for me.
09:25Bob was wrong.
09:27We couldn't believe what our tired eyes were seeing.
09:30£3.05.
09:31£3.05.
09:32It must look smaller in the dark.
09:36That is unbelievable.
09:39What an absolute beautiful creature.
09:42That, honestly, ladies and gentlemen,
09:45is off the Richter regarding a specimen.
09:48You're talking a 45, nearly 50 pound equivalent carp.
09:54All right, that is unreal.
09:55Well done, Bob.
09:56Cheers, pal.
09:58Definitely a younger and better looking fish than yours and all.
10:01Just like myself.
10:02As you would expect.
10:06That is like a goal at Wembley.
10:08It really is.
10:10Thank you very much.
10:16Off you go.
10:21Yes!
10:24We'd now well and truly smashed the first mission out of the park
10:29and still we had a short window of opportunity
10:32before the sun fully rose when typically crucians switch off.
10:38Could this be the giant crucian I'd always dreamt of?
10:41Oh, please stay on.
10:47Come on.
10:48Oh, that's a lump.
10:49That is a joke of a fish.
10:53Oh, come on.
10:54It's got to be free.
10:57Come on.
10:57Stay on.
10:58Stay on.
10:59Stay on.
11:00Stay on.
11:00Stay on.
11:01Oh, that's massive.
11:03That's got to be bigger.
11:04That is a G.
11:07That's huge.
11:08It's got a mix of a pair of ours.
11:11Yours, I certainly think, had a bit more length
11:13and mine had a bit more girth
11:15and that is both.
11:17Oh, unreal.
11:19Yes.
11:21What an amazing fish.
11:22He looks so big.
11:24You know, when it started rolling,
11:25I was like, oh, that's bigger than my first one.
11:28Could be even bigger than Bobby's.
11:31Oh, I am so happy.
11:33I've caught a three-pound crucian.
11:34Three-pound nine.
11:36Yes.
11:38Look at that, ladies and gentlemen.
11:40That is one of my ultimate fishing dreams.
11:45Nailed.
11:46I've never seen a fish like that.
11:49Wow, what a start
11:51to our Shropshire tour adventure
11:55crucian dream-making journey.
11:58Mwah.
11:59Coming up,
12:01Zamo scores an early goal
12:02at our next mega venue.
12:04That's a big fish
12:05and I'm just thinking of how big they are,
12:0750s and 60s.
12:09Our UK tour was off to a flyer
12:20with Zamo and I both banking
12:21a beautiful three-pound-plus crucian cart.
12:25Yes!
12:26And we were now arriving
12:28at one of the premier big cart venues
12:30of the entire UK.
12:32I've got to say,
12:34I'm a little bit nervous.
12:36Well, I've never fished the UK
12:38for carp of this size ever.
12:41We were right to be anxious.
12:45I give you
12:47the avenue.
12:49A sublime 10-acre syndicate
12:52that holds an eye-watering stock
12:54of 150 hand-picked pristine carp
12:58with a staggering 60 carp
13:00over 40 pounds
13:01with 15 of those being over 50 pounds
13:04including the heavyweight champion
13:06of the lake, Sweet Cheeks
13:08at just over the sensational
13:1060-pound barrier.
13:12So the fish in this lake
13:14look incredible.
13:16If I could liken them
13:17to football players,
13:18they would be up there
13:18with the best.
13:19So you've got your Cristiano Ronaldo's,
13:21your Lionel Messi's.
13:23Absolutely mega.
13:26Expectation-wise,
13:28knowing what's swimming around in there,
13:30it's hard to have anything less
13:32than the thought of beating
13:34your UK PB.
13:36We'd set ourselves
13:37the monumental mission
13:38of both beating
13:39our current UK carp PBs,
13:41the bar was set
13:43and it was set high.
13:44But this was a 10-fish a season
13:46tricky syndicate water
13:48so it certainly wouldn't be a pushover.
13:51Swim choice
13:51and then rig positioning
13:53would be key.
13:54After seeing some fish
13:55and gathering some local intel,
13:57we began tackling it
13:58from the south bank
13:59with Bob in swim five
14:00and myself in swim seven.
14:02The lake itself
14:03has a raised bar
14:05in three sections.
14:06This acts as a super highway
14:08for the carp.
14:09Fishing just off this bar
14:10would be our starting approach
14:11as all carp across the globe
14:13love structure.
14:15Feature,
14:16carp,
14:17it's like a magnet,
14:17the two come together,
14:19we're going to be honed
14:20into this area
14:21and we're going to get
14:21some food down there
14:22for them big carp
14:23because one thing
14:24I like to give them
14:25is a bit of grub.
14:26So we were embarking on the mother
14:29of all baiting campaigns
14:30with a mix of boilies,
14:32pellets,
14:33particles
14:33and tiger nuts
14:35to create buffet areas
14:36just off the underwater bar
14:38and for now
14:39the carp
14:40could eat for gratis.
14:43Give them food
14:44and they will come.
14:48We had a master plan
14:49to not actually fish
14:51the first night
14:51so no lines in the water
14:53and a free confidence boosted meal
14:55for the carp.
14:56We had about five kilos each
14:58to feed
14:59so we had our work cut out.
15:00That's been a long night's body.
15:23You're not wrong.
15:25That's how I get them rods out.
15:27Now you're talking
15:28but first
15:29a final bit of rig prep.
15:30as it had to be perfect.
15:33Ah, time to get
15:34that first rod out.
15:35Right, starting the tyre.
15:37Rig wise
15:37I've gone
15:38on the lead system
15:39with what we call
15:40a running lead clip.
15:42So rather than
15:42a thick swivel
15:43inside the lead clip
15:44we've got one
15:44that basically
15:45has been closed down
15:47and it comes out.
15:48So if the fish shakes its head
15:49that'll slide away.
15:50So it's sort of used often
15:52to just trip up
15:53those cleverer carp.
15:55And then hook bait wise
15:56because I've been feeding
15:56lots of different sized baits
15:59boilies, pellets,
16:00particles.
16:01I've got two little quads
16:02on there.
16:03One's a fruity one.
16:04One's a meaty one.
16:05Been soaked in loads of juices.
16:07And then the rig
16:08is what I always like to start
16:10on a big fish water.
16:11It's a D rig,
16:12fluorocarbon.
16:14That's what I'm going to be rocking
16:15with from the start.
16:16Let's hope
16:17get it in the mix
16:18and action isn't too far away.
16:22Bob was using similar rigs
16:24but with a boilie on one
16:25and tiger nuts on the other.
16:27So excited.
16:36First bite could be
16:37my personal best.
16:42Two hours in
16:43and I could tell
16:44Bob was feeling
16:45the big game pressure already.
16:47Are you nervous at all?
16:49I am.
16:49I am nervous, yeah.
16:51Big match this,
16:51isn't it?
16:52It is.
16:53It's like you going
16:54out at Anfield, mate.
16:56Big occasion,
16:57fantastic atmosphere
16:58and you have to deliver.
17:01I have to deliver.
17:02You will deliver.
17:03You will deliver.
17:04You've just got to stay
17:05composed, calm,
17:06you know?
17:07Well, I hope you're right
17:08because I'm after a giant.
17:11The air pressure dropped,
17:13the wind increased
17:14and clouds built,
17:15rain was forecast
17:16in the morning.
17:18All great conditions
17:19for big carp.
17:21We woke to rain
17:23with no carp caught
17:24throughout the night.
17:26Not surprising though
17:27as this lake had done
17:28only one night bite
17:29in six months.
17:31Porridge.
17:33It's going to have to
17:33tide me over
17:34for the next 12 hours.
17:36Zamo,
17:37always thinking
17:38about his stomach.
17:40I was just hoping
17:41the carp were doing the same.
17:47Yes, Bob.
17:49Yes.
17:51Oh, I'm nervous.
17:55It was the rod
17:56with the tiger nut
17:57that had gone.
17:58Proper having some,
17:59isn't it?
18:00The car was now
18:01lunging close in.
18:04Whoa.
18:07I'd never seen
18:08Bob this serious.
18:10Was he playing
18:11his new personal
18:12best carp?
18:12Yeah.
18:16Yeah.
18:21That's a decent fish
18:23that had looked wide.
18:25That looks wide.
18:27Yeah, well.
18:30Keep the head up.
18:32Keep the head up.
18:34Keep the head up.
18:36Keep the head up.
18:37Bobby Dazzler,
18:38well done.
18:39You have nailed one.
18:42First fish.
18:43Oh,
18:43and it could be a nice,
18:45a nice fish.
18:46Woo.
18:47When I hooked into it,
18:49I thought it was about a 20.
18:50The closer it got,
18:52I thought it got maybe a 30.
18:53But look at it in the net,
18:54it possibly,
18:55possibly
18:56touched 40 pounds.
18:58Bob's PB
18:58was 43 pounds,
19:0010 ounces.
19:01This
19:02was going to be close.
19:0538,
19:0611.
19:07That is a big fish.
19:08That's a big fish.
19:09And I'm just thinking
19:10of how big they are,
19:1150s and 60s.
19:15Well done,
19:16geezer.
19:16Nice one.
19:16That's a great start.
19:18Well,
19:19that,
19:19ladies and gentlemen,
19:20would make
19:21a season
19:22for an angler
19:23in the UK,
19:24but Bobby
19:24has literally
19:25caught it
19:26as our first carp.
19:27How are you feeling?
19:28Chuffed.
19:29The nerves,
19:29the nerves have settled now.
19:31I'm excited
19:31for the rest of the week.
19:33Bob,
19:33I want to fist bump you,
19:34but I'll fist bump the fish instead
19:35because you can't fist bump me.
19:36Well,
19:37let's go and get some more,
19:38eh?
19:39But bigger.
19:40That fish
19:41has settled my nerves,
19:43put me in a good place.
19:44I was happy
19:44the way I went out,
19:45the tactics
19:46that I've had,
19:47and it's just
19:49proven
19:49that I was right.
19:51Thank you
19:52very much.
19:56Patience
19:56is certainly
19:57a virtue
19:57when it comes
19:58to fishing,
19:59but what a reward
20:00and what
20:01a fish.
20:02Nice one,
20:05Zammo.
20:06We learn a lot
20:07from a capture,
20:07you know,
20:08there was three
20:08of our rods out there
20:09with boilies on
20:10and one
20:11with a tiger nut.
20:12The tiger nut rod goes,
20:13so it's a bit of education
20:14and the most important thing,
20:16pressure off the camp,
20:17Bobby's buzzing,
20:18so I'm buzzing.
20:20So now,
20:21four tiger nut hook baits
20:23out on our baited areas
20:24along the edge
20:25of the bar.
20:25An hour later,
20:34Bob was in again.
20:37Not feeling anything
20:38at the minute.
20:41But the carp
20:42had snagged him
20:42in the lily pads.
20:44Keep that line up,
20:45Bob.
20:46Up.
20:47Yeah.
20:47So it was Hamidi
20:48to the rescue.
20:50Using a landing net pole,
20:51I tried to spook
20:52the carp
20:52out of the pads.
20:53Right, yeah,
20:54I can see it.
20:55Fish still on,
20:55geese.
20:56Yeah.
20:56It's coming out.
20:57It's coming out.
20:58All right.
20:58Yeah.
20:58It's coming out.
20:59Coming out.
21:00Go on, Bob.
21:02Good man, Ali.
21:04Not all heroes
21:05wear capes.
21:07They're short
21:08and they wear camo.
21:10Cheeky little common.
21:12Cheeky big common.
21:14It's a clever fish,
21:15I know that.
21:17Go on.
21:18Yeah.
21:19Yeah.
21:20Yes, Bob.
21:21Good wingman.
21:22Good wingman.
21:23Good wingman.
21:24Oh, that's brilliant.
21:26Knew exactly
21:26what he was doing there,
21:27didn't he?
21:28Yes.
21:29The plump,
21:30feisty common
21:31weighed 33 pounds,
21:33seven ounces.
21:36Never going to behave,
21:37that one, is it?
21:37Never going to behave.
21:39And that's why
21:39you weren't a goalkeeper.
21:42The following morning
21:43was technically
21:44a special day for me,
21:45although I was feeling
21:47far from happy.
21:48Good morning
21:50and happy birthday.
21:52Well, Bobby Davler,
21:54it is not
21:55so happy at the minute.
21:56You know what I said to you
21:57about mental strength?
21:59Well, I need to listen
22:00to my old mottos
22:01because I am not
22:03feeling fresh
22:04at the minute.
22:05So, what are you thinking?
22:07I'm thinking,
22:08and I'm going to go
22:08stalking over that side.
22:11I'm going to take
22:12the baiting pole.
22:14Listen, hopefully
22:14you go over there
22:15and smash the water
22:16to pieces,
22:16scare them all over
22:17towards me
22:17and smash the 50s.
22:19But no, sorry,
22:20it's your birthday.
22:22I shouldn't think
22:23like that today.
22:27With the carp
22:28showing on the other
22:29side of the bar,
22:30I wasted no time
22:31in getting round there.
22:33My rigs were ready
22:34to rock.
22:37The first I placed
22:38in a dissolvable
22:39PVA solid bag
22:40full of ground bait
22:41and shipped it out
22:42using my trusty
22:43baiting pole
22:43to the area
22:44where I'd seen
22:45the bulk of the carp.
22:46The second rod
22:47was on a double
22:48tiger nut,
22:48fluorocarbon D-Rig.
22:50Both traps were set
22:51and their tense
22:52waiting game
22:53began again.
22:57Bite.
22:58Is that a bite?
23:00Yeah.
23:01For a weight.
23:01It was the tiger nut
23:03hook bait rod.
23:03Ooh.
23:05Birthday bite.
23:08That baiting spoon
23:09has paid off.
23:11I'm very nervous.
23:15It would be amazing
23:16to catch a PB
23:17on your birthday.
23:18But who knows.
23:21Don't think it's a PB.
23:23It's a lovely scaly one
23:24though by the look of it.
23:26Getting close now.
23:28Deep.
23:29Deep.
23:30It's ready.
23:31Go on.
23:31Oh, where are you going?
23:33Yes!
23:36Well, I haven't blanked.
23:38Love it, Al.
23:39Cheers, Dazzler.
23:40Cheers, Dazzler.
23:41Happy birthday.
23:43There's your present for you.
23:45Rob, the lake owner,
23:46was on hand for carp care duties
23:48and it weighed in at a very respectable
23:5033 pounds, eight ounces.
23:53Not a PB, but who cares?
23:55Look at this.
23:57Oh, absolutely impeccable.
24:00That is one of the nicest carp
24:02I have ever caught.
24:04Awesome.
24:06Feeling good now.
24:07A little weight off the shoulders
24:08and I can start to really gun
24:11for that PB.
24:17I feel like my session's just starting.
24:20Mega.
24:22What a carp.
24:24Go on, mate.
24:24Off you go.
24:26Might see you again
24:27when you're 55 pound plus.
24:30What a perfect day.
24:32It just felt like
24:34it was missing something though.
24:35Couldn't quite put my finger on it.
24:39Happy birthday, Al.
24:40Let's call this a cheat though, shall we?
24:44You know, honestly,
24:46not my type of thing
24:47to eat sugary stuff, but...
24:50Don't eat near naked flames, kids.
24:54Just two of us.
24:58Oh, this is nice.
25:00Have another go at that, Bob.
25:04I've always been to be eating cakes like that.
25:08Happy birthday.
25:08I'll make a wish
25:10before you eat, yeah?
25:13Coming up...
25:14We're awake.
25:15Is this my big moment?
25:16Come on.
25:17You're a lump, I can tell.
25:19Tell you what,
25:19I've got butterflies.
25:20It was our fishing main event in Shropshire
25:29where we were attempting
25:31to beat our UK personal best carp weights.
25:34We hadn't hit those heights quite yet,
25:36but Bob had caught two minters,
25:38the biggest and upper 30.
25:39Let's go and get some more, eh?
25:40And I'd managed a perler
25:42of 33 and a half pounds.
25:44That is one of the nicest carp
25:46I have ever caught.
25:47Just four full days of the trip
25:49now remained
25:50on this tricky syndicate venue.
25:52The action had slowed down,
25:54but we knew our rigs
25:55and tiger nut hookbaits
25:56were working.
25:57So for now,
25:58it was a case of biding our time.
26:00And as the day drifted past,
26:02Bob's quality of meals
26:03got steadily worse.
26:04You would struggle to work
26:07in a burger joint.
26:09Right?
26:10You couldn't even flip a burger,
26:11could you?
26:12Look at Stater.
26:14Look at that.
26:15What is that?
26:16That's all you've bought, mate.
26:17I'm not that far away
26:18from eating boilies.
26:21Look,
26:21the bottom line is
26:23your whole career,
26:24you've had everything done for you
26:25and it's clearly created
26:27an incapable human being.
26:28So,
26:29I've planned something big
26:31because I don't want
26:32this to carry on.
26:33If it means I get fed today,
26:34I'll do it.
26:36And not just baked beans.
26:39I'd arrange for
26:40double Michelin star chef
26:41and twice winner
26:42of the great British menu,
26:44Daniel Clifford,
26:45to pay us a visit.
26:46Oh,
26:47and he also happens
26:47to be a very keen carp angler.
26:50Daniel,
26:51come to save my life.
26:52Yeah,
26:52come to feed you.
26:53How are we?
26:54Teach him how to cook.
26:55He's an absolute disaster,
26:57Daniel.
26:57So,
26:58what we're going to do today
26:59is we're going to do
26:59beer can chicken.
27:00This is how I would cook
27:01if I went to France for a week
27:03because I go to the supermarket,
27:05I buy my ingredients
27:06and then I set myself up
27:07for the week
27:08because I like to eat well
27:09and obviously,
27:10I don't catch a lot
27:11so I've got a lot of time
27:11on my hands
27:12sitting on the bank.
27:13We're the same.
27:14We're the same.
27:14So,
27:15what I've done
27:16is I've brined the chicken
27:17in beer.
27:18Beer,
27:18so I've taken a litre of beer
27:19and I've added
27:21100 grams of salt to that
27:22and I've marinated that
27:23with the chicken
27:24for 12 hours
27:25and what that does
27:26is it seasons the chicken
27:27and also gets that beer flavour.
27:28I've tied it up
27:29so it keeps its form
27:30and then what I'm going to do
27:31is I've taken a can of beer
27:33and that can of beer
27:35goes up the...
27:37The chipati.
27:38The back entrance
27:41and now we're going to put that
27:44onto the barbecue.
27:44The barbecue's set about 180
27:46and the nice thing about this
27:48is it's a covered barbecue
27:52so the idea is
27:54that once we pull this down
27:56I've got an hour
27:57where I don't need to open
27:58I don't need to open it
27:59I don't need to keep checking it
28:00if the temperature's
28:01absolutely perfect
28:02I can carry on fishing
28:03or...
28:04What are you going to feed him
28:05in that hour though
28:06because he can't go
28:0710 minutes without eating
28:08so...
28:09I'm going to keep him
28:10really busy
28:10so I'm going to start
28:11building up his appetite now.
28:13What we're going to do
28:14is...
28:15Ali you're going to pick
28:15some thyme
28:16so I need some thyme
28:17leaves picking
28:17because that's going to
28:18go into the sauce
28:19so all I want is
28:20the minute, minute...
28:22Pick them off.
28:23Pick them off.
28:24Right this is a herb
28:25called tarragon
28:26so this has got
28:26like an aniseed flavour
28:28so if you could quickly
28:29pick me just the outside leaves
28:31not the firm ones
28:33and this is going to
28:33go into the sauce.
28:34I'm going to chop
28:34the chives quickly.
28:36So some expert
28:37plucking and chopping
28:38proceeded
28:38which you could easily
28:39do in advance
28:40of your fishing trip
28:41if you wanted.
28:42Zamora then gets put
28:43on spud slicing duties
28:45which he flies through.
28:47Lad's obviously starving.
28:48Done chef.
28:49Perfect.
28:50So if you transfer
28:51Bobby transfer that
28:52into there.
28:54Next to a pre-made
28:55sauce of ketchup
28:56brown sauce
28:58Worcester sauce
28:59and Tabasco
28:59you add shallots
29:01gherkins and garlic.
29:03Then finely chop
29:04some fresh tarragon
29:05My mouth's watering
29:06I'm not going to lie.
29:08Add a good pinch
29:09of salt, pepper
29:10a squirt of lemon juice
29:12and give it a whiz.
29:14First time you've ever
29:15whisked anything
29:16in a bowl is it mate?
29:17Dan does this look like
29:18it's the first time
29:19I've ever whisked it?
29:19I'll be honest with you
29:20I'm thinking about
29:20offering you a contract
29:21and taking you with me.
29:22There you go Al.
29:24Listen you just get
29:25your little hands
29:25picking those little leaves.
29:27That's taken like
29:28two hours to do them.
29:30Ali if you could give me
29:31a pinch of those in there.
29:32Pinch?
29:32You sure?
29:33Please.
29:35That's lovely.
29:36Right we just need
29:37to whisk that in
29:38and then we need
29:39to season that perfectly.
29:41I then slice onions
29:43with finesse.
29:44Bobby what we're doing
29:45now is as you can see
29:46when I open it
29:47the chicken is starting
29:50to steam.
29:50The beer inside the chicken
29:52is steaming through
29:53the chicken
29:53and what that's doing
29:54is keeping the moisture
29:55as we get that
29:56beautiful colouration
29:57around the outside
29:57of the chicken.
29:58Right so now
30:00Done chef.
30:01Done chef.
30:02Right so now
30:03we've got to cook
30:04the green beans
30:05sauté the potatoes
30:07and wait for the chicken
30:08so we're sort of
30:09pretty organised.
30:12Yeah they're nicely done.
30:13Now would be a perfect
30:14time to catch a fish.
30:16It is bite time
30:17around now on here you know.
30:19Afternoon they love it
30:20in the heat.
30:20Look at that.
30:22He's hungry as well.
30:23Look at that.
30:24You don't see them
30:25diving on your spots
30:26normally look.
30:27While Bob and I
30:28chilled out watching birds
30:30Daniel took the chicken
30:31off the barbie once ready
30:33and covered it
30:34while the beans cooked
30:35and he sautéed the potatoes
30:37with butter and bacon.
30:39All pretty simple really
30:40especially if you do
30:41most of the prep
30:42before you hit the bank.
30:43Oh that looks delicious.
30:45Right.
30:47There you go.
30:48That's amazing.
30:49My pleasure.
30:49Thank you very much.
30:51There you go.
30:51Look at that.
30:52Look at this.
30:54Well enjoy.
30:56Unbelievable.
30:57This is incredible.
30:59So can you knock this up now?
31:02Yep.
31:03When you boil in the hemp
31:04for the next fishing trip
31:05you brine the chicken
31:06in the beer
31:08and the salt.
31:09Unbelievable Jeff.
31:10Thank you very much.
31:12Eating well when you're on the bank
31:14makes you feel better
31:14as a fisherman.
31:15I honestly believe that.
31:16Don't.
31:16Hear, hear.
31:17He's going to catch a 50 tonight.
31:19Certainly.
31:21Well listen.
31:22Daniel's food was magnificent.
31:24All I've got to say is
31:25I wish Daniel was doing
31:26the show with me
31:27and not Ali.
31:28Well there's gratitude for you.
31:31The 50 pounder Daniel predicted
31:32never materialised
31:34after another fruitless night.
31:36Karma eh Zamo?
31:36We felt with just three more days
31:40and nights left
31:41to try and beat our PB
31:42something needed to change.
31:45So I decided to move camp
31:47after seeing a few signs of fish
31:49over the other side of the lake
31:50returning to the swim
31:52I'd caught from
31:52two days previously.
31:54I opted for setting up
31:55small traps
31:56just single hook baits
31:57to try and snag a carp
31:59and Bob also put out
32:00single hook baits
32:01on a third rod
32:02in the swim to his left.
32:04All traps were set.
32:05It was now down to the carp.
32:07Expectations were high
32:08but so too were anxiety levels.
32:11It's not an easy lake to fish.
32:13I think we started off really hot
32:14catching fish pretty early
32:16and it's really died down
32:19really slowed down.
32:20You know we've been unfortunate
32:22with the size of the fish so far
32:24so it only takes one fish
32:25for either one of us
32:27to beat our personal best.
32:30Oh.
32:36Oh we're away.
32:41The nerves.
32:42Honestly we need this so badly
32:44as a team.
32:46Come on.
32:47You're a lump I can tell.
32:49Ali's in.
32:51Tell you what I've got butterflies.
32:54UKPB to be.
32:56Let this be the moment.
32:58My 46 pounds 4 ounce UK record
33:02had stood for 10 years
33:03was I about to supersede it.
33:06My heart was beating out of my chest.
33:09Come on.
33:10It's got to be a good one.
33:17It was now just under the surface.
33:22Yeah it's a big one.
33:25I thought I heard the words big fish.
33:29Almost ready for netting.
33:31This was my do or die moment.
33:33Here we go.
33:34Come on.
33:34No no no.
33:36Don't go anywhere.
33:37Come on.
33:39Come on.
33:41I ain't got a clue how big you are.
33:43You look pretty big.
33:45You look pretty big.
33:46You look pretty big.
33:47Get in that net.
33:48Yes.
33:49Come on.
33:52Yes.
33:53Go on now.
33:54Cheers Dasla.
33:56We needed that boy.
33:58Nice.
33:58Is it a PB?
34:00It might be a 40.
34:02I'm not sure.
34:04Doesn't know.
34:05It's still very hard to tell
34:06sometimes when a fish is in the net.
34:07A PB of 46 pounds 4 to be
34:11and I think that could be
34:14possibly around that mark.
34:16It's hard to say when they get to that size.
34:19Sometimes they surprise you
34:20and sometimes they let you down.
34:23Come on.
34:25Oh.
34:26Oh.
34:27Hey.
34:3048.
34:3148.
34:319.
34:329.
34:32Cheers Roberto.
34:34Brilliant.
34:34Yes.
34:35Well done.
34:36Get in there.
34:37I'd only gone and smashed my UK PB.
34:40Mega.
34:41Ladies and gentlemen.
34:43What an absolute buzz that is.
34:4648 pounds.
34:489 ounces.
34:49I hope it don't take another 10 years
34:51until I catch another 40.
34:53Oh.
34:54UK.
34:56Buzzy.
34:57Hats off to him.
34:58He's made the move.
34:59He's paid off.
35:01New PB.
35:03Well done Alex.
35:04A true fishing highlight.
35:05A magnificent UK carp
35:09I may never ever top.
35:12What a moment to savour.
35:14Look at that.
35:16Yes.
35:18Go on then darling.
35:19That'll make someone else
35:20very happy one day.
35:21Oh.
35:30Powered back.
35:31What do you make of that Bob?
35:36He he he he he he he.
35:38Well yeah mate.
35:39Well yeah mate.
35:39Well yeah that was such a good fish.
35:41It was just such a good fish.
35:44Well done pal.
35:46Got an huge one.
35:48Well done mate.
35:49Brilliant.
35:50Coming up is Bob connected
35:52to the fish of his dreams.
35:53I am
35:54double nervous now.
36:03I'd just caught my UK PB carp
36:06of 48 pounds 9 ounces
36:08and was on cloud nine.
36:09What'd you make of that Bob?
36:11A very wet cloud nine at that.
36:14Another night had since passed.
36:15No more carp had been caught
36:17and just 48 hours remained
36:19for Zamo to also beat
36:20his UK PB
36:22but it was me
36:23who was hooked into
36:24what felt like another
36:25huge carp
36:26that had taken me
36:27into the lily pads.
36:29So I had to enter the water
36:31with team member Gabby
36:32helping to try and net it
36:34but the carp was so hard
36:35to control.
36:37Yeah it's foul hooked.
36:38That's why.
36:39Disaster.
36:40The carp wouldn't count
36:41and it looked massive.
36:44Oh that's why it battled.
36:46It's foul hooked.
36:47Foul hooked.
36:48For it to count
36:49it must be hooked
36:50in or around the mouth.
36:52This carp had been
36:53hooked in its flank.
36:55Rob the lake owner
36:55confirmed my biggest fear.
36:59Last time I ate
37:00that fish was 54.
37:02Oh wow.
37:04Got to work eh?
37:07Deflating.
37:08Really deflating.
37:10Especially when you find out
37:11it's one of the really
37:12rarely caught carp here
37:13and one of the true
37:15you know the top three
37:16in the lake.
37:17Madness.
37:18It's funny really.
37:19I can only laugh about it.
37:20What else can you do?
37:21Have one look at her
37:22out of respect.
37:24Look at that fish.
37:24Look at the flanks.
37:25Look at those lovely
37:26symbolic scales
37:28on the shoulder.
37:30And she's been through enough.
37:32Wasn't to be
37:33lovely but we did get to look
37:35at one of the true
37:36beasts
37:37of this lake.
37:41Ah,
37:42carp fishing.
37:42Don't you just love it?
37:44Madness.
37:45Moments later
37:46the madness
37:47continued
37:48but this time
37:49for Bob.
37:51Aye.
37:54After days
37:55of waiting
37:56a hook pull.
37:57Oh no.
37:58Absolutely gutted.
38:02Gutted.
38:04Yeah.
38:05The fish are so big
38:07in here
38:07when you lose one
38:09you can't help
38:11but feel
38:11really truly
38:12deflated
38:13and
38:13you know
38:14his PB
38:14is very achievable
38:16on here
38:16and that will hurt.
38:22Get it back out there.
38:23A double disaster
38:25so close to the end
38:27our fortunes
38:28had certainly
38:28taken a turn
38:29for the worse.
38:30The rest of that day
38:31proved fruitless.
38:37The following day
38:38we spent watching
38:39the water
38:40looking for signs
38:41of carp.
38:42Nothing was showing
38:43and no more bites.
38:44It looked like
38:45we were going to be
38:45leaving on a low note.
38:47The sun set
38:48on our final night
38:50in Shropshire
38:50and I prayed
38:51Bob got one more chance
38:53before we left
38:54in the morning.
38:55Just hoping
38:56for one last
38:57big hurrah.
39:04Nothing through the night
39:06pretty standard
39:07for this lake
39:07but with just a few hours
39:09before packed down
39:10the carp
39:10showed themselves
39:11in the area
39:12between Bob and I
39:13with many
39:14in the warmer upper layers
39:15so I moved
39:16to the swim
39:17to my right
39:17to target
39:18the cruising carp.
39:20Last chance saloon
39:21I'm going to use
39:22a zig rig.
39:22This is basically
39:23a suspended bait
39:24that comes off the lead
39:26and it's sitting
39:26sort of mid water
39:27so any fish
39:28that are cruising
39:29enjoying a bit of the sun
39:30might just trip up.
39:33My four foot zig
39:34was being cast
39:35just off the bar
39:36in the centre of the lake
39:37where the carp
39:38seemed to be congregating
39:39in about seven foot of water
39:42meaning my bait
39:43would be just
39:44three foot
39:44under the surface.
39:45but then
39:49on the other side
39:50of the lake
39:51I am
39:57double nervous now
40:00last couple of hours
40:03please
40:07please get it in Bob
40:08please get it in
40:09surely this had to be
40:11a 40 plus
40:12hasn't got those
40:13big slow movements
40:15of a big carp
40:16but
40:16haven't seen it yet
40:18but so nervous
40:21come on Bob
40:22come on son
40:23oh wow

40:31the babies in here
40:33but nice to get
40:37one more for sure
40:38if I get it in
40:39that is
40:40it looked like
40:41Bob had hooked
40:42one of the lake's
40:42stockies
40:43not one of his
40:44giants
40:45in the net
40:52when the fish
40:53hits the net
40:54it's a very
40:55safe bet
40:56it's Zamora
40:57Bobby Zamora
41:00don't give up
41:01your day job
41:02Al that's for sure
41:03but
41:04yeah
41:05nice to have

41:09stumper fish though
41:09but
41:10I'm sure it's
41:11an absolute cracker
41:12you can't decide
41:13which carp
41:14picks up your
41:15bait I guess
41:15dazzler
41:16what an incredible
41:19achievement
41:20you have singled out
41:22the smallest carp
41:23in the lake
41:24that is a serious
41:25accolade
41:25you need to take
41:26that and cherish it
41:27this is a brand
41:28spanker
41:28so this has never
41:29been called before
