Motorway Cops Catching Britain's Speeders S07E04 (28th April 2025)
Transcript
00:00It's been an RTC at rush hour. What a nightmare. This car's been coming around the roundabout.
00:08It's in the back of that one. Should be on the forensic investigation unit.
00:13At a crash in Newcastle, PC Jamie Leslie has spotted his chance to grab a gold medal.
00:19I think if I was to go and take part in the international curling, I think I'd be an absolute champion at it.
00:25If the mountain's sweeping up, I'll do. I'll give it a bit of a... I think I'll be a champion curler.
00:34Jobs are good.
00:36Bad drivers, beware. If the cops don't catch you, dashcam will.
00:44With 25,000 traffic convictions a year, down to your cameras, Britain's deadliest drivers have nowhere left to hide.
00:55Here we go.
00:58And on the front line...
01:00It's contact.
01:01...are our motorway cops.
01:03Are we going?
01:04Why, aye, of course we're going.
01:06We join Northumbria police.
01:08You're not getting a selfie with us, no? I've just took your car off you.
01:11...as they chase down dangerous drivers.
01:14Mother, mate, you're all bladded. You've had a drink, haven't you?
01:17I've had two.
01:18And get the worst offenders...
01:19Did they do what I've just done was a stupidity, but I nearly got away.
01:23Nearly got away, but you didn't.
01:24...off our roads.
01:26Do you know how we're good?
01:28Yeah.
01:29Anything I do say may be given in evidence, Mr. Officer.
01:33Helping them in their battle with idiots behind the wheel...
01:37...is dashcam.
01:39Have you seen the dashcam footage?
01:40It's vital evidence...
01:42You're a drift, yeah?
01:43...and proof...
01:44...that Britain's dumbest drivers...
01:47What are you, Dan?
01:48...are a law unto themselves.
01:51Police 1, criminal 0.
01:52Tonight...
02:00Do you know who you buy your cannabis off?
02:02...a drug user gets an unexpected high.
02:06Do I know who I buy my cannabis off?
02:08Aye.
02:08Why?
02:09So I'd ask for a refund.
02:11Ha-ha!
02:12First he did, that'll do me.
02:17Pulled out a more bike.
02:18A crash sees a motorcyclist thrown from his bike and a new driver in shock.
02:27I feel so f***ed.
02:29I'm going to find out if he's alright and everything.
02:33That's another thing I've got to get my eyes done.
02:36And a short-sighted speeder looks on the bright side.
02:39We'll do an eye test for a few years. Do you reckon you'll pass with your glasses on?
02:43I hope so.
02:48Modern day policing relies on cutting-edge technology.
02:58But at Follingsby Nick in Washington, there's one bit of kit that never goes out of fashion.
03:04Yes, we do have cones, a lot of them.
03:07I know traffic cones are a thing for drunk students, aren't they?
03:12And these are actually a good sizing way to put on your head.
03:14I don't think I've ever been that drunk to put one on your head.
03:16Each to their own.
03:17PC Martin Andersen is happy to keep his cones firmly on the road.
03:25The minging as well.
03:26Once you've done this job and you see what these things get put out in,
03:29like mowed and petrol and fuel,
03:31and the last race you want one of them is on your head,
03:33but you think differently when you've had a beard, aren't you?
03:35So, each to their own.
03:36Today, Martin is one of four officers patrolling this patch of Sunderland and is a much valued member of the team.
03:54I don't want to get too carried away with what the lads will say about us.
03:58They'll probably say, oh yeah, Martin is really proactive, top of the league for stats.
04:03You know, best driver, best operator on the shift, best dressed when we go out outside of work.
04:10He's actually quite a handsome lad as well, and I'll be surprised if they said anything other than that, to be fair.
04:17Go ahead, caller.
04:27Of course, pulled up the motorbike from flying off his bike.
04:30Is the motorbike rider injured?
04:32He's lying on the floor.
04:34We'll get somebody right down there.
04:36Right on, AC.
04:38Yeah, received.
04:40I haven't got any injury details at the moment.
04:42Local and ambulance also travelling.
04:45He'll let us know if there's any update on injuries when local get there.
04:48I'll start heading over.
04:50I had no collision in Southwick and Sunderland.
04:58My concerns with this, with any art that you see that involves a motorbike, is just that, you know, obviously on a motorbike, you're so vulnerable.
05:11You know, on a car, you've got a bit of protection around you and a bit of a shell.
05:15On a motorbike, you know, you just get exposed.
05:18Shockingly, more than 100 motorcyclists a week are killed or seriously injured on Britain's roads.
05:25Unsurprisingly, over half of the most serious collisions involve a car.
05:37Rural roads pose a greater threat to riders than urban ones.
05:40And with motorbikes less visible than cars, drivers fail to see them.
05:52It only takes seconds to turn a near miss into a direct hit.
05:59Thankfully, the motorcyclist who captured this terrifying crash on dashcam recovered from his injuries.
06:10In Sunderland, Martin is racing to a collision between a motorbike and a car.
06:274-6-1 is pulling up one scene.
06:29Right there.
06:304-6-1 is pulling up one scene.
06:47Prepare for battle on Britain's highways.
06:51As dangerous drivers go on the offensive.
06:55Launching missiles.
07:02On not-so-military manoeuvres.
07:08If all else fails, get ready to retreat.
07:16Where's your pain, mate?
07:18Top of your neck, lower down your back.
07:20What's that for you, mate?
07:22It's all.
07:23It's all.
07:24It's all right, mate.
07:26In Sunderland, Martin is at a collision between a motorbike and a car.
07:31Hold your neck.
07:32Just for your soap.
07:33It's just there.
07:34Exactly there?
07:35Yeah.
07:36Right.
07:37What about up here?
07:38No, it's all right.
07:39Just there.
07:40Just there.
07:41All we're going to do is get you straight.
07:42It's all right?
07:43Yeah.
07:46While medics look after the motorcyclist.
07:49Is this the driver of the car, sir?
07:50It's the driver, yes.
07:51He hasn't been breathalised as of yet.
07:52Right.
07:53Martin deals with the driver.
07:55Come on, have a jump in my car and I'll do the breathalyser on that on you, mate.
07:58What's happened here then?
07:59So in your own words, what's went on?
08:03So I was waiting at that junction opposite to go straight on.
08:05Cars this side stopped to let us out.
08:06And I just didn't see the bike coming on the inside lane, but on the cars that were signalling
08:10right to let us out.
08:11So when I pulled out, the bikes are sort of paid in front of my car.
08:12Another motorist has captured the crash on dash cam.
08:14Another motorist has captured the crash on dash cam.
08:16What's happened here?
08:17What's happened here then?
08:18So in your own words, what's went on?
08:20So I was waiting at that junction opposite to go straight on.
08:23Cars this side stopped to let us out and I just didn't see the bike coming on the inside
08:27lane, but on the cars that were signalling right to let us out.
08:30So when I pulled out, the bikes are sort of paid in front of my car.
08:37Another motorist has captured the crash on dash cam.
08:46It shows the motorcyclist riding along the road when suddenly the Vauxhall Corsa crosses
08:52the junction straight into his bike.
09:02Because you've been involved in a road traffic collision, I'm going to request a specimen of
09:05you.
09:06Are you happy to provide one?
09:07Yeah.
09:08Right.
09:09When's the last time you had a drink?
09:10Yesterday I had two cans.
09:11Right.
09:12Have you had anything to drink in the last 20 minutes?
09:14No.
09:15Right.
09:16How long have you been driving like?
09:17I've passed 24th of April.
09:19Oh, right.
09:20So just a month?
09:21Yeah.
09:22You'll know I've done one of these before if you've not been driving for
09:24long.
09:25I've never seen one before.
09:26Right.
09:27I'll keep hold of it.
09:28All you need to do is take a big deep breath and blow into theirs as if you're blowing
09:30a balloon up.
09:31Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
09:35That's a zero, as you probably would have thought.
09:41You're all going to go ready brace lift, OK?
09:47Yeah.
09:48Ready, brace, lift.
09:49Back.
09:50Back.
09:51Back.
09:52Here you go, guys.
09:54I feel so ****.
09:55Will I find out if he's all right and everything?
09:56I hope so, yeah.
09:57But it'll take a while because you'll probably have to go for scans and things like that just
10:12so they can make sure there isn't any, you know, sort of breaks or internal injuries
10:15and things like that.
10:16Right, mate, you can, you can go.
10:20Yeah.
10:21Yeah.
10:22What are you doing?
10:23To keep walking, go we're going.
10:25It's not moving though.
10:26I think you should keep moving.
10:27I think you can move on.
10:28Oh my my God.
10:29Yeah.
10:30To keep going, go.
10:31Oh my God.
10:32Oh my God.
10:33Oh my God.
10:34Oh my God.
10:35Oh my God.
10:36And then I'm as we go, I'm your guy.
10:37Oh.
10:39Oh my God.
10:40Oh my God.
10:41Oh my God.
10:41Oh my God.
10:42Oh my God.
10:43Oh my God.
10:45Oh my God.
10:46It seems like you're a nice enough lad, in fairness, he's quite shaken up by it, as
11:07you'd expect.
11:08He's only been driving for a month, he only passed his test about four weeks ago.
11:12It's a shock for anyone, but when you've only been on the road for a couple of weeks, it's
11:18going to have given me a bigger fright, I would imagine, but yeah, certainly could have been
11:22a lot worse.
11:23Evenings.
11:24Evening.
11:25Feeling ready and raring to go, full of energy.
11:41I'm a little bit in the wars, went to the gym, and I've twinged my back a little bit.
11:45Oh, the excuses are coming out already.
11:47So, you're going to have to do all the grafts tonight.
11:50PC's Jamie Leslie and Moya Cullen are already straining under the weight of a busy night
11:55shift.
11:56So I'm going to have to do all the grafts again tonight.
11:58What if I pull my back, get my pen out, you know, get a paper cut or something, we're
12:03going to be unable to do any film of proper graft.
12:06I'm sure we'll manage.
12:07After you.
12:13I haven't really felt tired until now.
12:20Which is pretty good going.
12:21Since I started talking.
12:22Yeah.
12:23It's like, oh.
12:24Oh, here he goes again.
12:25For new team member Moya, Jamie needs to warm up his conversation.
12:32As well as the car.
12:33Is that too cold for you?
12:34Wait.
12:35No, no, no.
12:36No, no, no.
12:37No, no, no.
12:38No, no.
12:39I'm sorry.
12:40No, no.
12:41No.
12:42No, no.
12:43No.
12:45No.
12:46No.
12:47No.
12:48No.
12:49No, no, no.
12:50No.
12:51No.
12:52No, no.
12:53No.
12:54No.
12:55No, no.
12:56No.
12:57No.
12:58No.
12:59No.
13:00No.
13:0119.5
13:04Like we'll go 19
13:06I was saying I feel colder now
13:10And it's July than May
13:11It's ridiculous isn't it
13:13Like this is the British summer
13:14Miserable
13:15That sort of depressing thing
13:18Went away for a week
13:19It was like consistently
13:20At least 30 degrees
13:22And then I've come back
13:24And I haven't even got any sort of colour
13:25My excuse is that it's been so miserable here
13:28I've had absolutely no way
13:30Of getting out and getting any sort of like
13:32So you can always get a bit of a build up
13:34Before you go
13:35Like a pre-tarn
13:36Pre-tarn
13:37This is it
13:38Keep your eyes open for something
13:47So when you see you want to stop
13:48Give us a shout
13:49What more that car's going a bit fast up there isn't it
14:03Speedy
14:06Just got a car which has been travelling quite fast up Stamfordham Road
14:12He's just this guy in front of us
14:17So let's see if we can get him stopped
14:20And see he's still putting his foot down a bit
14:22Like he's not got great lane discipline this lad
14:24Has he?
14:26Not indicating
14:27He's not taking that roundabout too well either
14:29Has he?
14:30Turned the injured off bunny lad
14:55Turned the back of my car
14:57Do you value your licence?
15:04Yeah do you want to say it?
15:06No I said do you value your licence?
15:08Yeah
15:08Is what I said to you
15:09You had a drink?
15:12No
15:12Just seeing this car absolutely flying up Stamfordham Road
15:21Looks like a child who's driving it
15:23But he reassures us he's got a licence
15:26A car full of them
15:28I don't think he's particularly that bothered about the way he's driving
15:33Right
15:36Know why I've stopped you?
15:38No
15:39You don't?
15:40Probably speeding
15:41Probably
15:42Probably is
15:43So how long you had your driver's licence for?
15:45Three months probably
15:49Three months
15:49Round about there yeah
15:50Right
15:51You had any alcohol at the day?
15:52No
15:53Not at all?
15:54No
15:54Well
15:54Like
15:55Pint
15:57One pint
15:58How long ago?
16:01Roughly
16:01An hour
16:02Smelled on your breath
16:05Take a deep breath
16:09Low
16:10Keep going
16:11Keep going
16:11Keep going
16:12Keep going
16:12Stop
16:14That's a feel mate
16:22You're going to be low and 50 late
16:24So you're going to be arrested
16:26Drink drive
16:27You understand?
16:28What?
16:29I'm resting you on suspicion of drink driving okay?
16:36You don't have to
16:37Listen
16:37Listen
16:38I swear
16:39Listen to me
16:40Listen to me
16:40I know but I wouldn't do this
16:42I've been at a party
16:42Someone's supposed to be putting my drink
16:44I don't believe you for one second
16:46Alright
16:47Yeah but I wouldn't do stuff like
16:48I played
16:49Right well you have
16:50Haven't you?
16:51Yeah but I played
16:51I wouldn't do stuff like that
16:52So why did you drive like that?
16:55Was someone making you drive like that?
16:57So I must have made you drive like that
16:59As well as
16:59Like the same as what they've put you in your drink
17:01I'm just in the car at my friend's house
17:02And do you want to kill them all day?
17:04No
17:04Obviously not
17:05Do you read the Chronicle website
17:10He got it on Instagram that
17:11Do you know when you see it every day
17:12That there's like
17:13This person's been killed in a road traffic collision
17:15This person's been killed in a road traffic collision
17:17This person's been seriously injured in a road traffic collision
17:20Do you know who deals with all them?
17:21And has to go and tell the family
17:22The people that have killed
17:23Me
17:23He's a young lad
17:28He's only had his license he's seen for three months
17:30The driving was despicable
17:32Even at this roundabout
17:33When he had been aware that I was behind him
17:34We might get into custody
17:36He might blow under the legal limit
17:37At the end of the day
17:38Yeah I'll be happy with that as well
17:39Because we could have stopped
17:40His four mates getting killed by
17:43And maybe he's himself
17:44The best thing you can do in this situation
17:51All right
17:51That when we go to the station
17:53You've got to do that breath test
17:54What my advice would be to you
17:56Is don't fail to provide
17:58Because then you'll lose license straight away
17:59If you provide a spencer man
18:01It might come under
18:01All right
18:03Where am I going now?
18:23She don't know
18:23I'm going to Fourth Banks custody
18:25In the town
18:26In our central station
18:27Is this the first time you've been arrested?
18:30Just keep holding you
18:41Just in case you fall over
18:43Just have a seat on there mate
18:51As soon as the custody sergeant comes down
18:53We'll get the custody off you
18:55All right
19:00He actually looked about 12 didn't he?
19:13He did
19:13I was shocked he had a license
19:15He's only had his license three months
19:17You try to
19:19Kind of put that realisation to him
19:21That you're not invincible
19:23You know he's a canny lad
19:24You seem to be taking it on board
19:25When we got into custody
19:27And he's laughing on
19:29And failing to provide
19:30He's totally messed it up
19:34You know
19:34Unfortunately he's going to pay the price now
19:37It's not a good start
19:38Not at all
19:39To having your license is it?
19:40The office looks nice and tidy for a change
19:55I was wondering if you noticed anything this morning
19:58When you came in there
19:58I did
19:59I did
19:59I thought I'd actually been in early
20:00Because it was up to my standard
20:02At Eatle Lane Nick in Newcastle
20:05Grime fighters
20:06PC Mark Crammond
20:07And Sergeant Glenn Robson
20:09Are ensuring standards don't slip
20:11I had me marigolds on
20:14I was tidying up
20:15Tidied the cups up
20:17Done the dishes
20:18Wiped the desks down
20:19Who's his dirtiest desk?
20:21Definitely the inspector's desk
20:22Is the dirtiest
20:23Yeah
20:24Lead by example
20:25Right
20:26Let's go
20:27Raring to go
20:36I'm with the sergeant Glenn
20:37Hopefully I'll bring him a little bit of luck
20:39I'll have to do a lot of work
20:41They're impressing
20:42I'll have to be good
20:44Are you ready for a drive out?
20:48Let's go
20:57Typical British
21:04North East weather
21:05Isn't it?
21:06It's about to put my sunglasses on
21:08We'll tighten it down
21:09I hope you'd set the sign for the day
21:13We'll have a little rain cloud following me around
21:16Doom and gloom
21:27I will have a look at what that car up there
21:40It's um
21:41It's indicating it's flashing a bit
21:43A bit too quick
21:44So it's obviously got one not working
21:45Looks like a bit of a shed doesn't it Glenn?
21:47It does
21:48It's getting a bit sharp as well
21:49Can I get a vehicle check please?
21:51Hello Polly Harriet
22:13Are you got any insurance on this car?
22:15It's just showing up
22:15It's not having any insurance
22:17That's all on ours
22:17Are you able to show us it?
22:19Hey I'll have to get it
22:21Shh
22:21What do you want here mate?
22:27Do you have a driving license?
22:28No
22:28Eh?
22:29No
22:29You come and sit now
22:33I can't hear you when you're mumbling away
22:35You're mumbling away sat there
22:36I can't hear a word you're saying
22:38Who says it's a car?
22:56You don't know whose car it is?
22:58Well is it stolen?
22:59We'll see you now
23:05Bad drivers are in need of some good parenting
23:20To learn to take turns
23:25And not fill themselves with junk
23:29All this pushing and shoving
23:34And throwing toys out of the pram
23:40We'll see naughty motorists getting grounded
23:46Who says it's a car?
23:55You don't know whose car it is?
23:58Well is it stolen?
24:00I'm not saying no
24:01In Newcastle
24:03Glenn and Mark are searching for answers
24:06With the driver of an uninsured car
24:08You're not saying no
24:09Is it your mum's car or something?
24:12Because it's down to someone
24:13I'm not saying no
24:15You're not saying no
24:16Because of how you're presenting
24:19You're standing at a driving before
24:21I'm going to request a sample of saliva from you
24:23Do you consent to provide a sample of saliva
24:25Which tests for cannabis and cocaine at the roadside?
24:27Yeah
24:28Yes
24:28Pop your tongue out for us
24:35You used any drugs recently?
24:37I've smoked cannabis but I haven't
24:39Yeah I'm not under the influence now
24:41It's not what I have to do is it?
24:44No I'm not under the influence now
24:46I look like I'm under the
24:51Do I look stoned like?
24:52Is that what he's just been saying?
24:53Your eyes are a little bit glazed eye
24:55Because I've just woke up
24:56Like 15 minutes ago
24:57That could be a reason why
24:58So it's just
24:59I mean you speed up there
25:01In the 20
25:02Up here you're touching 40
25:03It's an hour
25:04You call you know what I mean
25:05I wasn't trying
25:06I wasn't speeding
25:07I was just accelerating a bit more
25:08So I could get up the hill
25:09You were speeding
25:10But you were going quick
25:11Out of 20
25:12Do you know who you buy your cannabis off?
25:19What?
25:20Do you know who you buy your cannabis off?
25:22Do I know who I buy my cannabis off?
25:24Oh yeah
25:24Why?
25:24So I would ask for a refund
25:26Ha ha
25:27Of course
25:28That'll do me
25:29Clear as a whistle
25:33I'm going to be reporting for the offence
25:38Driving with no licence
25:40And no insurance
25:41That's the end of year
25:43Short stay with us
25:44Okay
25:44Of course
25:45But you might want to tell your mum
25:47Then if your mum's driving us
25:48Because it's not showing us
25:51Having any insurance
25:51The only thing is now
25:53Is that the car gets seized
25:55Anything you want in it
25:56Get it out
25:57So you don't have to go
25:58No
25:58Oh you're just a strange kid
26:06He's probably going to be disqualified
26:21Disqualified from holding the licence
26:23Before he's even passed the test
26:25Silly sausage
26:26Silly sausage
26:27Yeah
26:27Ignorance isn't it
26:32He's above the law isn't he
26:33No comment
26:35I'm not going to complain about the sun
26:55Because we hardly see it
26:56I prefer when it's a little bit
26:58On the cooler side
26:59I don't mind today
27:00Because there's a bit of a breeze
27:01But when it's red hot
27:02It gets unbearable
27:03For Glen and Mark
27:06The forecast has improved
27:08Prompting
27:08A heated debate
27:10I feel the heat quite easily myself
27:13So I'd spend most of my time
27:14Even in the winter
27:15In a pair of shorts
27:16Slider shorts
27:19T-shirt in the summer
27:20In the winter
27:22Put a hoodie on
27:22I'd agree with that
27:25But I wouldn't agree with the
27:26The slider side of it
27:27Not good for your feet
27:28Not just comfortable
27:30They're one
27:30Very particular about them
27:33They can't be like
27:34Proper flip-flops
27:35With something in between
27:36Your toes
27:36Put a slider
27:37Slider pair of slippers
27:40Try this one
27:52Oh yes
27:53He's bullying up the back end
27:56Of this car
27:57He's in two minds
28:01With it
28:01To go into that lane
28:02And go around
28:02The outside of everyone
28:03He had a little
28:04Little luck
28:05To see if he was
28:05Going to do it
28:06The worst thing is
28:07It's a straight mile
28:07Now I'm speeding
28:08To go into the rest of my head
28:20Volume car is out of the way
28:20Again
28:21We're up to
28:25Over 90 now
28:26She's not going to be held down, isn't he, by the car on front.
28:31Right up the back end of him again.
28:36Speeding drivers, who act like they own the road, put lives at risk.
28:44In Harrogate, a speeder in an Audi couldn't care less as he floors it on a wet motorway.
28:50With North Yorkshire police on his tail, he flies through red lights.
28:54And in his bid to stay ahead, only just avoids a collision with an HGV.
28:59The pursuit hits the busy A1, as the driver races down the hard shoulder.
29:05Still hard shoulder, risk is high.
29:08He takes a detour down a country lane, where his driving becomes even more reckless.
29:13He's gone wrong side, other road, wrong side.
29:17Topping speeds at 139 miles per hour.
29:20Unaware, another cop car lies in wait, ready to deflate his tyres.
29:27Vehicle stung, vehicle stung.
29:29Ending the chase.
29:30The driver pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, dangerous driving, and failing to stop, and was jailed for 10 months.
29:45Volume car's out of the way again.
29:46The driver's going to be held down, isn't he, by the car in front.
29:52Then again, perhaps, right up the back end of him again.
29:56North of Newcastle, Glenn and Mark are in an unmarked car, on the tail of an impatient driver with his foot down.
30:03North of Newcastle, Glenn and Mark are in an unmarked car, on the tail of an unmarked car, on the tail of an unmarked car, on the tail of an unmarked car.
30:33bomb.
30:36Hello, sir, how are you doing?
30:38Did you not see the guy that cut us off?
30:42Where?
30:44What was it round about?
30:45No, I've been following you for a little while, to be fair.
30:48You just knock the engine off and come and join me, please.
30:57I'll tell you, he cut me off.
30:59Who cut you off?
31:00It was, er, in fact, it was a Volvo.
31:04But then you went into the second lane.
31:06Nobody cut you off?
31:08Yeah?
31:08Nobody cut you off?
31:10We've been behind you since the Spine Road.
31:12We nearly lost you because you were driving that quick.
31:16How fast do you think you were going?
31:17I honestly don't know.
31:19It was over 70, I should imagine.
31:21Well over 70. Keep going.
31:23Go on, I'd like you to have a guess.
31:25Honest? I don't think I was touching the out, really.
31:28And aside from that, when you started tailgating the BMW in front of you,
31:32do you notice what he done?
31:34I honestly didn't notice.
31:35I was watching you just when you put the lights on.
31:37It was just before we put the lights on,
31:39because you were driving that fast
31:40and you were that far up the BMW's bottom,
31:43he put his foot down.
31:45I don't disagree.
31:46If that's what it is, that's what it is.
31:49Is it your car, is it, Paul?
31:50Yes, yes.
31:52I'm not trying to be funny,
31:53but that's coming up six-year-old in September
31:57and I've only done 13,000 metres.
32:00Exactly a month of the year, I'm 72.
32:03I'm not on the roads.
32:06You shouldn't be, driving like that.
32:08If you said I was doing it, I can only apologise.
32:13Just listen, what we're going to say,
32:14because that's one of my pet hates,
32:16you're not sorry about what you've done,
32:17you're only sorry about what you've been caught doing.
32:19Yes, I will, yeah, yeah.
32:21Otherwise you wouldn't do it in the first place.
32:22Essentially, I'm speaking to you about the offences
32:28I've just witnessed on the road there.
32:29Careless driving, tailgating people.
32:32You could say that the speeds that you were getting up to
32:34and the way you were driving
32:35could actually constitute dangerous driving.
32:38Honestly, do you?
32:39I can see you're apologetic
32:41and everyone's behaviour always changes
32:43once I get put in the back of a police car.
32:45So I'm going to report you for the offence of careless driving.
32:48What I propose to do, OK,
32:50is to put you on a driver education programme.
32:54Anyway, is this for me, can you see it, OK, from there?
32:56Oh, not really.
32:58That's another thing I've got to get my eyes done.
33:01What?
33:02You want to see?
33:04You need to get your eyes done.
33:05Oh, no, I can see that.
33:07Right, OK.
33:14We'll do an eye test with you as well, OK,
33:16to make sure you're fit to hold your driving licence.
33:20So it's 20 metres, OK, away from your car,
33:22and I'm good at it.
33:23Do you reckon you'll pass with your glasses on?
33:26I hope so.
33:27So do I, otherwise you're in trouble.
33:29Is that the wife in the car, is it?
33:31I'm going to get absolutely murdered.
33:34She's going to get in trouble.
33:38So he measures out the 20 metres,
33:41then I'll ask you to read the reg in his hand.
33:43It's A-G-19-G-Z-L.
33:49Right, perfect.
33:50You've passed.
33:58Please take this a lesson and drive safely, OK?
34:01Well, you've got a mouthful of her.
34:03Well, I'm not surprised.
34:03You deserve it.
34:04Just his manner of driving's my concern,
34:25his attitude to the road.
34:26He's been driving since the 60s.
34:29It's been years since he's done any sort of training.
34:32I think one of the good things to have
34:33as police officers in dealing with traffic offences
34:36is to have discretion.
34:37He's probably going to get more benefit
34:39out of going on an educational course
34:41than getting points, fines, or disqualification at court.
34:44It's all about making the road safe,
34:46and I think the best option with this one
34:48is to send him on that course.
34:50Once it's been sort of spelled out in black and white,
34:53it's quite shocked that he's behaving in that way.
34:56It's a different type of character, isn't he?
34:58What can I get for you?
35:14A white coffee.
35:15Yeah, if you go.
35:17That's all, thank you.
35:18With just a coffee for company,
35:21Martin's staying alert on the night shift.
35:24It's quarter past one in the morning.
35:26The darkness is upon us,
35:29combing the streets of Sunderland,
35:32but I think we are the only car on the road.
35:36Driving round in the middle of the night
35:37when there's not much going on,
35:38it's a little bit lonely.
35:42It's a little bit surreal as well.
35:44It's sort of how you imagine these, like,
35:47end-of-the-world movies.
35:50There's no sign of the apocalypse,
35:53but Martin's not taking any chances.
35:56But it's all about being prepared
35:58for, like, a coiled spring,
36:01ready to burst into action
36:03if something appears in front of us.
36:05But up until now,
36:07and for the last sort of 30, 45 minutes to an hour,
36:11we haven't seen much, to be honest.
36:15It's very, very quiet.
36:16Oh, there's a car.
36:23That's the first one we've seen for a while.
36:30Fire, isn't he?
36:37He's hooping it, isn't he?
36:39Driving in the UK
36:54is like a holiday from hell.
36:59Cue jumping at the check-in,
37:00running late for your flight.
37:10The race to bag the last sun lounger.
37:17And then,
37:18it ends up being a washout.
37:20Oh, there's a car.
37:31That's the first one we've seen for a while.
37:34It's 2am in Sunderland,
37:36and Martin is on the night shift.
37:37Fire, isn't it?
37:39It's going to try and catch up with this white van
37:53because he's still making good progress
37:56away from us.
37:58It just sort of raises the question
37:59as to why
38:00has he got his foot down?
38:02Is it just a little bit of
38:03absent-mindness?
38:06Is he putting his foot down
38:07because there's nothing on the road?
38:09Or is there something
38:10a little bit more sinister behind it?
38:12Has he seen the police car
38:13when he's reacting to our presence
38:15because he's got something to hide?
38:19Speeding drivers
38:20often play fast and loose with the law.
38:28On the outskirts of Cheltenham,
38:31Gloucestershire police see a Toyota Corolla
38:33flying down the road.
38:36When cops hit the blues,
38:39the driver hits the gas
38:40to try and escape.
38:43But with the law hot on his tail,
38:45he oversteers a corner
38:46before bombing down residential roads
38:48at well over 70 miles an hour.
38:51Hitting the dual carriageway,
38:54the driver revs up yet again
38:57and jumps a red light.
39:00As he comes to a major roundabout,
39:02he tears around it
39:03in the wrong direction
39:05before exiting on the entry
39:09straight into oncoming traffic.
39:13Still trying to lose the cops,
39:15the driver dodges another car
39:17before hitting the curb
39:18and finally coming to a stop.
39:24The driver pleaded guilty
39:26to dangerous driving,
39:28drug driving
39:28and driving without insurance.
39:33He was sentenced
39:34to 10 months in prison
39:35and banned from driving
39:37for two years.
39:49Flying, isn't it?
39:51In Sunderland,
39:53Martin is trying to catch up
39:54with a speeding van.
39:56There he is.
39:58We'll get it a bit closer,
39:59we'll get him stopped
40:00and see what the tail is behind it.
40:14In a rush?
40:16Let's jump out.
40:17Come and have a seat in the car, mate.
40:18Have you had anything to drink?
40:19No, no, I've just picked these up.
40:21Got it in my phone.
40:22Who's the van?
40:23Mine.
40:24Is the van registered
40:25and show it to you?
40:25Yeah.
40:30So I think you know
40:36why I've stopped you?
40:37Yeah, speeding.
40:38Sorry, mate.
40:39Yeah, you're absolutely
40:39hoofing us.
40:40I shouldn't have been speeding.
40:42Sorry.
40:42I just wanted to get home.
40:52F***ing, F***ing,
40:53good, isn't that?
40:56When's that time
40:56you had a drink?
41:00A while ago, mate.
41:01How long's a while ago?
41:02A couple of hours.
41:06Right, mate,
41:07I'm going to be straight with you
41:08and smell drink.
41:12From your manner of driving as well,
41:13I'm going to request
41:14a specimen of breath from you.
41:17If you just lean forward,
41:18I'll keep hold of it.
41:20A big, deep breath
41:20and just blow into theirs
41:21as if you've blown a balloon up.
41:22Keep going, keep going,
41:23keep going, keep going.
41:24That's it.
41:25right you have filled the breathalyser
41:32that means that at this moment in time i'm arresting you on suspicion of drink driving
41:39the reason i'm arresting you is because we've got to go down the station and do the evidential
41:42breath test all right have you got anything on you that you shouldn't have no me phone's
41:48going on i'll get it mate i just want us to tell them to make their own way yeah just a
41:57second
41:59oh man why do i do it
42:02all right fellas he's going to come in with me he just wants his phone i just want me to
42:06lock the van up lads so so where you got to lay but we i stopped him from the reason i
42:12think it's really how's it for no reason like no you're right it's nothing to use
42:27right
42:32what table there you're very very close to the limit but you are over so we've got to
42:37go in because it's come up as a fail
42:39there's a chance of getting out before the morning so whatever you blew in custody
42:43obviously if it ends up coming back under you'll be kicked straight back out right
42:48this is what happens when you do fevers with people i know i take it you drive for work as
42:54well i need me what do you do what do you do
42:58so what that door over there
43:13that's one very lucky driver and he's blown 37 at the roadside which has led to him being arrested once we've got him into custody and put on to the evidential machine and
43:20he's provided a evidential reading in custody of 34
43:35so bearing in mind the legal limits 35 he's managed to keep his driving licensed by the skin of his teeth
43:42he'll probably not get that lucky again
43:44definitely not
43:45you know maybe he needs to go and put the lottery on as well
43:52if you have any dash cam clips you think could feature in the next series of motorway cops
