00:00In Venezuela, the second national public consultation is underway as the people
00:14choose which community projects they would like to develop in each territory.
00:23The new Israeli massacres against Palestinian families in the Gaza Strip
00:27have killed at least 51 people in the last hours.
00:34And in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,
00:37hundreds of people mobilized to demand an end to the armed conflict in the region.
00:47Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:49My name is Belen de los Santos.
00:50I'm from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:53We begin with the news.
00:57We now begin with the information.
01:08Venezuelans are participating nationwide in the second public consultation this year
01:12in order to elect their communal projects to benefit their communities.
01:16On Sunday's elections, thousands of people will vote for their most needed communal proposals to be enforced.
01:23The most voted projects will be financed by the national government and executed by the community,
01:29while the second most voted will be sourced by the state government.
01:35In this context, the National Electoral Council informed having activated 5,718 voting centers nationwide
01:42and over 7,400 polling stations.
01:53Meanwhile, the Bolivarian National Armed Forces have deployed on Saturday the Republic plan
01:58to guarantee the security of the second national consultation of the year.
02:04As in all electoral processes in the Bolivarian nation, the armed force takes control of some territories
02:10with the purpose of guaranteeing the democratic participation of all citizens
02:15and the protection of the right to vote.
02:17This is the strengthening of our democracy.
02:31It is the protagonist participation of the people who is deciding their own needs and sorting them out directly.
02:37I think this will be within the framework of the seven transformations
02:44because we are heading for a communal city or even a communal country
02:47grounded in the fact communes are already our reality.
02:53The strengthening of the popular power for our democracy to make it perfect.
03:01Based on it Venezuela poses an unusual threat to the capitalist model.
03:05At least it solves the most common problems of our communes.
03:11At least in our neighborhoods.
03:13We no longer face floods due to sewage wastes.
03:17We count up with lights on streets and houses facades have been painted.
03:21Have you noticed progress and development?
03:23Yes, of course, I have, during the whole revolution.
03:26What can you say about citizens' responsibility,
03:29taking into account that citizens are the ones who elect?
03:32Yes, of course, we decide by ourselves.
03:35And we expect bureaucracy not to be in the way.
03:42In the second great popular consultation of this kind,
03:46the people will once again be the protagonist.
03:49Let's see more in the following report.
03:50A demonstration of the participatory democracy and popular power promoted by the Bolivarian revolution.
04:00Millions of citizens, organized in 53, 38 communes throughout the country,
04:05are ready to vote for the structural projects to be developed in each community.
04:08The importance of voting in the elections is the participation, more than anything else, of the communes.
04:21Of the people who are members of our communes, they are the participants, the guarantors of the projects.
04:25Before the elections, the assembly is held, and they propose together with us, all as a team, we propose the projects.
04:32So the important thing about voting on this day is that the whole commune participates, so that the dreams become reality.
04:38Together, we make our own projects. We self-manage our own projects.
04:49A significant increase in electoral participation is expected.
04:54Since in one year, $148 million were invested and 14,000 approved projects were built.
05:05These projects have benefited a lot of people, not only here in my area, but nationally,
05:13and I think even internationally because other countries have seen the communal political development
05:18that has been done in Venezuela, which I think is one of the most beautiful parts of this revolution.
05:24This has a direct impact because we are in the territories, we know the realities, the immediate needs of our neighbors,
05:36of the people in our area, and through the communal councils, the social organizations that are alive in the territory,
05:42we have articulated with the institutions to give an immediate response.
05:4680% of the resources will be transferred from the executive branch to the project supported by the majority of voters,
05:57and the remaining 20% will be granted by the governors and mayor's offices.
06:02Next Sunday, all the neighbors, on Sunday from 8 a.m., in more than 7,000 voting tables,
06:14from 8 a.m. will be the natural leaders, spokesmen, and spokeswomen of the communal councils and
06:27communal circuits, waiting for you in the voting centers so that each neighbor is the one who decides
06:32with his vote the project prioritized to approve.
06:34To finance it immediately and fix and make your commune beautiful.
06:48To prepare, educate, and raise awareness among the people is also one of the objectives of the state.
06:59This is the work that the ministry and the planning school do.
07:01They implement training courses for the communal spokespersons in order to strengthen and grow the popular self-government.

07:43In Mexico, wildfires continue raging in the western Sierra Madre on Saturday.
07:49These fire outbreaks have hit the region since last March.
07:53The Secretary of Rural Development, the SDR, registered 13 active wildfires in different municipalities.
08:01Hence, authorities recommended that citizens may report any fire or risk to which they may be exposed to the emergency numbers in the region.
08:09Over 258 firefighters from various units have been deployed to put out the flames and assist those affected and attend to emergencies.
08:21They will especially hit the municipalities of Bocoina, Guadalupe, Calvo, Vallesa, Guadalupe, Calvo, Vallesa, Guadalupe, and Urique.
08:33Also in Cuba, authorities in Pinar del Rio have intensified their efforts to fight a large fire that has been active for several days in the Arenales area.
08:47According to official sources, aerial observation systems have been in place since last Friday to recognize and attack the flames.
09:07The actions link aerial and terrestrial strategies in the whole territory as well as aerial crews composed of experienced firefighting personnel.
09:17Simultaneously, joint brigades from the agricultural sector have completed the construction of a large trail that will help to close the fire front.
09:27These measures are expected to deal at the size of blow to the fire and also mitigate its impact on the region.
09:34Heavy landslides in Ecuador also caused the closure of roads due to the rains that hit the south of the country.
09:47The storm, which has caused serious damage to agricultural land in the community of Nangora, specifically in the Malacatos Valley in the municipality of Loja,
09:58has caused the ground to become saturated, resulting in mud and rock slides.
10:03Local residents report that their homes have not suffered serious damage but express great concern about the loss of crops,
10:10a significant blow to a community that is mainly a peasant community.
10:16And we now move on to other topics.
10:23Nine people have died in the city of Vancouver in Canada after a driver ran over a group of people during a festival of the Filipino community in the country.
10:32The incident occurred at 8pm local time on Saturday while the citizens of the Philippine community in Canada were celebrating Lapu-Lapu Day honoring this heroic figure of the Asian nation.
10:46According to police reports among the nine dead, one child was identified while seven others were injured.
10:53The 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene of the accident after being identified as the perpetrator of this massacre.

11:22Final short break. Don't go away.
11:35So, new Israeli massacres against Palestinian families in the Gaza Strip have killed at least 51 people in the last hours.
11:43According to health sources, another 115 people were injured as they warned that the death toll could rise.
11:52So far, the emergency teams are having difficulties to reach the victims who are trapped under the rubble due to ongoing Israeli attacks against ambulances and civil defense personnel.
12:03Since October 7th, 2023, more than 52,240 people have been killed by Zionism, mostly women and children, despite calls by the United Nations and the international community for an immediate and definitive ceasefire.
12:24And the Hamas Palestinian resistance movement rescued one of the Israeli hostages in its custody from a Zionist bombing.
12:31The movement posted some images as evidence of their effort to save the Israelis alive, who had been buried due to the shelling of its own government when a military plane attacked the area where several Israelis were held captive.
12:47Both the hostages' families and the resistance itself denounced that the brutal and indiscriminate airstrikes put the hostages at risk.
12:55Indeed, the occupation aggressions have already killed several Israeli citizens who had been under Hamas custody since October 7th.
13:04As a result, their families accused Prime Minister Netanyahu of sacrificing their children to stay in power.
13:10And the Palestinian commission of resistance to the apartheid wall and the Israeli settlements has denounced the ongoing strategy of colonization of land in the occupied West Bank.
13:27The organization pointed out that the Israeli authorities approved the construction of houses in the Jewish colonies illegally built on the West Bank.
13:35Experts pointed out that Israel is expanding its occupation in the territory despite international criticism of its illegal occupation campaign.
13:44They also denounced Tel Aviv's attempts to divide Palestinian areas by expropriating land and building settlements and roads meant exclusively for Jews.
13:53And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
