00:42 Hello, and welcome to "From the South."
00:46 I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:49 We begin with the news.

00:57 In Palestine, the health ministry
01:08 reported that the number of victims of the Israeli genocide
01:12 against the Gaza Strip has risen to 35,857
01:16 since October 7, 2023.
01:19 The organization has stated that at least 80,293 people
01:23 were injured in the military attacks by Tel Aviv.
01:26 In addition, they specified that in the last day,
01:29 the bodies of 57 people who died as a result
01:32 of the actions of the Israeli army
01:34 were transferred to the hospitals in Gaza.
01:36 In this sense, demonstrators from several countries
01:39 have spoken out to demand an end to the genocide perpetrated
01:42 against Palestine and absolute respect
01:45 for its sovereign rights.
01:52 Alleges at the top United Nations court
01:54 ordered Israel to halt its offensive in the southern Gaza
01:57 city of Rafah.
01:58 The other was announced on Friday
02:00 at a hearing regarding the case brought by South Africa
02:03 accusing Israel of genocide.
02:05 The United Nations top court alleged immense risk
02:09 to the Palestinian population to back its decision.
02:12 This comes after South Africa requested
02:14 extra-professional measures at a hearing held last week, which
02:18 concerned in particular the critical situation faced
02:21 by Palestinians in Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza,
02:24 where 1.4 million Palestinians had taken refugee
02:28 and is now being targeted by the Israeli army.
02:31 In response to this, Judge Nawaf Salam
02:34 indicated Israel should halt their actions immediately.
02:36 The court considered that in conformity with obligations
02:45 under the Genocide Convention, Israel must immediately
02:49 halt its military offensive and any other action in the Rafah
02:54 government, which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza
02:58 conditions of life that could bring
03:01 about its physical destruction in whole or in part.
03:06 The Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations
03:08 hails the International Court of Justice order for Israel
03:12 to halt military operations in Rafah.
03:14 The provisional measures adopted by the ICJ,
03:20 we are grateful for South Africa and those
03:22 who supported them for going back to the ICJ,
03:25 asking them for additional provisional measures.
03:29 And we welcome these provisional measures,
03:32 including stopping the military operation in Rafah.
03:37 We believe that the provisional measures of the ICJ
03:41 also previously asked for stopping all military
03:46 operations in the Gaza Strip and stopping
03:49 these crimes and potential crimes of genocide
03:54 against our people in the Gaza Strip.
03:56 Venezuela congratulated the government of South Africa
04:02 for its actions to stop the Israeli genocide
04:04 against the Palestinian people.
04:06 Through an official communique on X,
04:08 the Venezuelan foreign ministry said
04:10 that this Israeli genocide could not
04:11 have been carried out without the complicity of the United
04:14 States and the European Union and accused them
04:17 for paralyzing the United Nations system,
04:20 especially its Security Council, for more than seven
04:23 months of continuous crimes.
04:25 In another part of the document, the ministry
04:27 reiterated the Venezuelan government's commitment
04:29 to the Bolivarian diplomacy of peace,
04:32 which guides its foreign policy and its recognition
04:34 of the courageous and firm position of South
04:36 Africa in defense of the Palestinian people
04:39 and international law.
04:41 The text also sentenced that like millions of people
04:44 around the world, the Bolivarian Republic
04:46 will continue to rise its voice in all international arenas
04:50 to demand the cessation of genocide
04:52 and that those responsible for such barbarism
04:55 be tried and punished in accordance
04:57 with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations
04:59 and international law.

05:11 - In other topics, in Brazil, heavy rains
05:23 returned to the state of Rio Grande do Sul,
05:25 causing widespread flooding and a total of 163 deaths.
05:29 The Brazilian government reported on Thursday
05:31 that the death toll in Rio Grande do Sul has risen to 163
05:36 following the rains and floods that
05:38 have affected 468 municipalities.
05:41 The latest bulletin issued by the civil defense
05:44 said that 72 people are missing and 806 have been injured.
05:48 According to local media statements,
05:50 to date, Rio Grande do Sul has 581,643 people
05:55 affected by the floods caused by the biggest
05:58 climatic crisis in the state.
06:00 2,342,460 people have been affected,
06:05 while 65,762 are in shelters.
06:13 In Papua New Guinea, a landslide hit the Kau Kalami village,
06:17 bringing about at least 100 deaths.
06:19 The incident occurred at around 3 AM local time on Friday
06:23 in the Enga province, some 600 kilometers northwest
06:26 of the Papuan capital port, Moresby.
06:29 The government has not issued an official death toll yet,
06:32 but locals and the media fear it could be over 100.
06:36 According to testimonies, the landslide
06:38 shattered village houses into pieces, blocking a road.
06:42 The prime minister, James Marape,
06:44 offered his condolences and announced sending rescue teams
06:47 to the site.
06:47 Several studies reveal that the size of fishes in the oceans
06:56 has been decreasing in the last few years.
06:58 Let's see more details.
07:01 This is a phenomenon that has been
07:03 ongoing for several years.
07:05 In all the world's oceans, fish are getting smaller.
07:08 Example of fishes with decreasing size
07:11 abound, from salmon in the Arctic
07:13 to rays in the Atlantic.
07:15 Studies reveal that between 1960 and 2020,
07:19 sea fish body characteristics have
07:21 been the most consistent pattern of reduction.
07:24 The University of St. Andrews in the United Kingdom
07:27 points out that there are two possible explanations.
07:30 One, quite obvious, is fishing.
07:32 And the second will be linked to the climate change.
07:35 The research points out the impact
07:38 that these changes may have on populations
07:41 whose economy and main source of nutrition depends on fishing.

08:05 In Colombia, the prosecutor's office
08:07 rejected the request to nullify the trial against former
08:10 President Álvaro Uribe, who is accused of witness bribery
08:13 and procedural fraud, and ordered it to continue.
08:16 The judge in charge of the hearing
08:18 also determined that no appeal may be
08:20 filed to overturn the decision, pointing out
08:23 that this would be an obstruction
08:25 to the administration of justice and abuse of the law.
08:29 During the hearing, former President Uribe's defense
08:31 attorney requested that Senator Iván Zapata and three
08:34 other former officials not be recognized
08:37 as victims in the case.
08:39 On the other hand, former President Uribe
08:41 intervened in the hearing, denouncing that his process has

09:02 Agreements include sectors such as agriculture, health,

09:39 of the Iranian embassy in honor of President Ebrahim Raisi.
09:43 The Venezuelan president ratified the solidarity
09:46 and support of the Bolivarian nation to the Iranian people
09:49 as he signed the book of condolences
09:51 in honor of the Iranian martyrs.
09:53 The head of state stressed that the Venezuelan people
09:56 hope that the legacy of Ebrahim Raisi
09:59 will be light and a guide for peace and well-being in Iran.
10:02 Nicolás Maduro addressed the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali
10:05 Khamenei and expressed his condolences
10:08 and eternal solidarity and union in a moment of pain
10:11 that the Iranian people are going through.
10:13 He also stated that Venezuela and Iran will be always united.
10:17 In a level of deep integration, thinking
10:26 about the common development of the people of Iran
10:30 and the people of Venezuela, two courageous people,
10:35 two anti-imperialist people, two peoples that stand up,
10:41 that show in practice what the deep dialogue of cultures,
10:44 of civilizations, of religions is,
10:50 that we are united in values, in struggles, in pains,
10:54 and also in hope.
10:56 In this context, several authorities
11:01 of the government of Cuba paid tribute
11:03 to the President Ebrahim Raisi after his passing,
11:08 the president of the National Assembly,
11:09 together with other senior officials,
11:12 signed the Book of Condolences open
11:14 at the residence of the ambassador
11:16 of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Havana
11:19 in memory of the Iranian president
11:20 and other senior leaders of the fraternal nation.
11:23 Meanwhile, in Lebanon, Hezbollah resistance
11:33 expressed its condolences to the Iranian people
11:36 for the loss of President Ebrahim Raisi and his companions.
11:39 Resistance Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah
11:42 made a statement highlighting some
11:44 of the work carried out by martyred President Ebrahim
11:47 Raisi.
11:48 Nasrallah also pointed out the diplomatic progress
11:50 achieved by Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian
11:54 in his three years at the helm of Iran's foreign ministry.
11:58 The Hezbollah leader also noted that the loss of President
12:02 Raisi and the people around him represents
12:04 a loss for the axis of resistance in the Middle East
12:07 and is a struggle against Zionism.
12:09 Through this event, we are together
12:17 with Iran, the Islamic Republic of Iran, with its leader
12:24 and with our leader, of course, leader
12:26 of the nation for its people, for its government,
12:32 its citizens, and each individual.
12:34 And the worthy families of these great martyrs
12:41 that we have lost in that incident.
12:42 We express our feelings and our condolences for the loss.
12:50 We understand what it means to lose figures like these.
12:53 And we also declare our loyalty to those
13:00 who have been with us in every moment
13:02 and have never abandoned us.
13:06 The people of Iran accompanied the farewell ceremony
13:08 of President Ebrahim Raisi at the shrine of Imam Reza
13:12 in his native Mashhad on Thursday, May 23.
13:15 Let's review the events.
13:16 Prior to the burial of the Iranian head of state
13:22 in his hometown, thousands of citizens
13:25 accompanied the coffin of President Ebrahim Raisi
13:28 in the city of Birjan, together with members
13:31 of the Iranian diplomatic corps and more than 90
13:34 regional and international delegations.
13:37 The mobilization toured the city of Mashhad
13:39 to bid farewell to the remains of the Iranian leader, which
13:42 were later deposited in the mausoleum of Imam Reza.
13:47 During the state funeral, Tehran hosted the ceremony
13:49 to bid farewell to Foreign Minister Hossein Amir
13:52 Abdullahi at the Foreign Ministry headquarters,
13:56 after which he was buried at the Abdul Azim Al-Hassani Shrine.
14:00 Later, during the ceremony for the president
14:02 and his companions, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
14:05 performed namaz prayers to bid farewell to the dead diplomats.
14:09 The ceremony was held at the University of Tehran
14:12 in front of the coffins of Raisi,
14:13 the Iranian foreign minister, as well as
14:15 the six dead in the accident.
14:18 In turn, thousands of citizens participated
14:21 in the funeral procession of Ayatollah Ali Hashem.
14:25 In addition, thousands of citizens of Sanyan
14:28 attended the funeral of Berus Gadimi,
14:30 crew member of President Raisi's helicopter,
14:33 and Mohsen Darianush, co-pilot of the helicopter.
14:36 President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir
14:40 Abdullahi, and other officials died on May 19,

14:46 of the eastern Azerbaijan province.
14:49 After the incident, the authorities
14:51 carried out high-range search operations,
14:54 which were partially obstructed by the bad weather conditions.
14:57 The rescue efforts relied on international support
15:00 and maximum intelligence teams to locate
15:03 the wreckage of the aircraft.
15:05 Despite the death of high-ranking Iranian government
15:08 officials, the people reiterated that Tehran will not
15:11 change its policy and will continue
15:13 the legacy of the leader under the framework
15:16 of the Islamic revolution.

15:53 In Argentina, a new national strike
15:55 on all levels of the educational system
15:57 has started demanding the reopening of discussions
16:00 over salaries, among other issues.
16:02 Our correspondent, Juan Carlos Bartolotta from Buenos Aires,
16:05 has extended to us the following information.
16:08 The general strike was called by the unions
16:14 of the primary, intermediate, and university education
16:16 sectors.
16:17 The latter, in spite of the government's promises,
16:20 is still awaiting definitions for the financing
16:21 of university education.
16:23 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
16:26 It must be said that the conflict is far from over.
16:28 It is necessary to solve the central budgetary problem
16:31 of Argentina, which is the salary of teachers
16:33 and non-teachers of the national universities.
16:36 We have lost more than 50 points against inflation.
16:39 We are the most punished sector in Argentina.
16:41 And we believe that this is not a coincidence.
16:44 But rather, it responds to a political ideological
16:47 festering that the president has with the public universities
16:50 of Argentina, which have been and are
16:53 a factor of critical discourse.
16:56 The teachers' claims have not ceased
16:57 since the swearing-in of Javier Millet
16:59 as president of the country, which is clearly
17:01 shown by what is happening in Misiones,
17:04 but also in other provinces that have been holding strikes
17:06 for days.
17:08 We are in a national strike with a high level of compliance
17:11 all over the country, even in the universities.
17:14 We are demanding educational financing,
17:16 both for national universities and
17:19 for the compensatory system.
17:20 The reinstatement of the National Teachers' Incentive
17:23 Fund and increase of the compensation salary
17:26 floor for teachers.
17:27 The increase of the salary floor to compensate salary
17:30 inequalities, which is very low, and it is 250,000 pesos.
17:36 In general, for teachers, the current situation
17:38 is a regression to the 1990s, when the adjustment
17:41 policies of former president Carlos Menem were imposed.
17:44 It is almost a deja vu of what we already
17:47 live in the '90s, which is educational underinvestment,
17:51 persecution of popular leaders, adjustment in education.
17:55 So in that sense, sad for us, because it is a big setback.
18:00 We have conquered many rights, and this
18:03 is a big setback for Argentina and for Latin America.
18:07 So we are standing up.
18:08 We are the teachers, the professors, the university
18:12 professors, the female professors fighting,
18:15 the universities.
18:17 Today, the whole educational system
18:19 is on strike, from the initial level to the university.
18:24 Total stop.
18:25 A strike all over the country.
18:29 This is the first unified strike of the educational system
18:32 since the inauguration of the government of Javier Millet.
18:35 The main demand is salary and budgetary,
18:37 with a demand for the convening of the National Teachers
18:39 Meeting to discuss the minimum salary for the sector,
18:42 together with the restitution of the National Teachers'
18:44 Incentive Fund.
18:45 Russian President Vladimir Putin said
18:55 he doesn't refuse to negotiate a peace agreement with Ukraine,
18:59 but he would only do it with a legitimate government.
19:02 The statement was made in Belarus on Friday
19:04 during a meeting with that nation's President Alexander
19:07 Lukashenko.
19:08 The Russian leader said the peace talks
19:10 should be based on common sense, rather than that ultimatums,
19:13 and with a legitimate Ukrainian government.
19:16 Putin pointed out that according to Moscow,
19:19 Vladimir Zelensky's legitimacy as president is over.
19:22 In that sense, he had argued that the peace
19:25 summit on Ukraine to be organized next month
19:27 in Switzerland is a public relations stunt
19:30 to legitimize the current regime in Caib.
19:32 We consider that the legitimacy of the current head of state
19:42 is a stunt.
19:46 I proceed from the fact that peace negotiations should
19:50 be resumed, that they shouldn't be based on ultimatums,
19:56 but rather on common sense.
19:58 If it comes to this, we, of course,
20:00 need to understand with whom we can and should deal in order
20:06 to reach the signing of legally binding documents.
20:09 Then we must be completely sure that we are dealing
20:13 with legitimate authorities.
20:16 Meanwhile, the summit of ministers of the Group of Seven
20:19 began in Italy to discuss financial issues.
20:22 For two days, member countries are
20:23 expected to evaluate the possibility of supporting
20:26 Ukraine with the resources from confiscated Russian assets.
20:30 The meeting is attended by finance ministers
20:32 and central bank officials from the United Kingdom, France,
20:35 the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, and Italy.
20:38 These nations provide technical and military assistance
20:41 to Caib while promoting more sanctions against Russia.
20:45 The world of music remembers on Friday
20:53 the first anniversary of the death of the exceptional singer
20:56 Tina Turner.
20:57 Anamai Bullock, better known as Tina Turner,
21:00 began her musical career in the mid 1950s
21:04 under the name Little Anne.
21:06 Her debut as Tina Turner was with the single A Fool in Love
21:10 in 1960.
21:12 As a solo artist, her 1984 album Private Dancer
21:16 launched to start on songs such as What's Love Got
21:21 to Do with It, Let's Stay Together,
21:23 We Don't Need Another Hero, and The Best,
21:25 consolidated her career.
21:27 Her life was made into a movie in 1993's What's
21:31 Love Got to Do with It.
21:32 She was recognized for her energetic live performances,
21:36 her outlashing outfits, her powerful voice,
21:38 and her long career, during which she
21:41 won eight Grammy Awards.
21:42 We have come to the end of this news brief.
21:54 But before, let's listen to fragments
21:57 from the performance of the Queen of Rock and Roll
21:59 at a concert at Wembley in 2000.
