00:00Welcome back to the Qantas Australian Formula One Grand Prix and the shot from the Goodyear
00:11Blimp over the course looking back towards Melbourne, the CBD just on the left of screen
00:16there and there is the Goodyear Blimp providing magnificent pictures right round the course
00:20throughout the afternoon and we've enjoyed them in the Celebrity Race so far, now we're
00:24getting ready for the V8 Supercar Showdown and yesterday here at Albert Park, Mark Scaife
00:28led the field home in a barnstorming Hot Wheels V8 Supercar Showdown, today the battle between
00:33Holden and Ford is set for another round and keep an eye out for car number 99 at the back
00:38of the field, my co-host on the footy show slamming Sam Newman. Daryl, this is the homegrown action
00:44that brings the Formula One teams out of the pits as the big V8s light up the park and
00:48may I say Daryl, congratulations because I heard during the week Eddie Jordan, the head
00:52of the Jordan team, regard you and comment publicly that you are the best race caller in the world
00:58so mate, we've got the best in the business, calling the homegrown best in the business.
01:02Thanks Eddie, I had given him a few drinks up until that's part of the day so…
01:06It doesn't matter mate, never knock back a compliment.
01:08Exactly and you're talking about Holden vs Ford of course that's what it's all about,
01:12if you go through the years there's been 32 races, that's including as we look through
01:16the grid as you read who's there and how they've lined up I'll just give you some stats
01:21because they're very interesting. Holden have won 18 wins, Ford 10 and Nissan of course won
01:26five times when they were competing in this class but Holden have won the last 14 races,
01:32the last Ford win was Glenn Seaton in race one of the 1996 first year in Melbourne.
01:39Now also there's seven Formula Four champions in this field, Tander, Bright, Richards, Lowndes,
01:44McConville, Ingle, Larcombe. So when you have a look at it, that's been a wonderful proving ground
01:51for young talent. Now they've found their way into the V8s which in a lot of cases it's probably
01:56not what they want to do but it's the premier racing AJ here in Australia.
01:59It is the premier racing Daz and if you want to become a professional racing driver i.e.
02:03earn a living out of racing cars this is the top category to aspire to within Australia and a lot
02:08of these guys that have done Formula Four, Russell Ingle's been overseas, Larry Perkins has been overseas,
02:13a lot of the guys have been overseas, come back to Australia to settle down and now they are
02:17professional drivers in the true sense of the meaning in the V8 category.
02:20John Watson, for viewers who weren't with us yesterday, I know you're a big fan, that's Paul Radisic there,
02:26he's getting set and he's been driving very well I've got to say over the last couple of days but
02:30you are a fan of these cars. Yes indeed and particularly Paul Radisic and Trish, his wife,
02:34have come back out to Australia having been in Europe and when I come out here for the Grand Prix
02:39and watch these cars it is without doubt the most entertaining form of motor racing out in Australia.
02:43You're connected with this the the small ball touring cars in England and that's a very exciting
02:48series but it's not as strong as this in this country. No it's not unfortunately we've lost a
02:53number of manufacturers whereas here in Australia you've got two manufacturers but what you've got
02:58are grids full with 40 cars and that is just something we would well just hold our breath for to
03:03have in the UK feel like this that's fantastic. It's a good formula in as far as it's controlled
03:08as well the cars weigh 1350 kilos they race a five litre engine which is restricted to seven
03:13and a half thousand revs ten to one compression ratio so it's a fairly tight formula so parity
03:20is there and the only way these guys can gain an advantage is technically through shock absorbers and
03:24so forth. Len Seton all sitting up ready he was the last Ford winner back all of those years ago now.
03:30But just something just picking up on what Alan was saying you know touring cars in England a two
03:34car team is looking at a budget of about three and a half to four million pounds a year for super
03:39tourers these cars are substantially less than that and they provide much closer and much more fun
03:45much more fun rotor racing. All set now on the grid waiting Mark Scaife sitting on pole. Scaife
03:49he's got to do good do a good start here if Paul does a better start and takes the inside line
03:54i think we can see quite a few cars being held up for a while which could even make for a better race.
03:58Scaife on pole and it's Radicic beside him Tanda's been fantastic really for the last two days he's
04:04been so quick got muscled and hustled out of it yesterday Larry Perkins in behind him then Craig
04:10Lowndes watch for him we'll be on board with him and Paul Radicic waiting for the start now Scaife
04:14needs to make a beauty because Radicic has been red hot off the line so it's Holden then it's Ford
04:20Holden Holden Holden and Ford to Holden at the moment they've got the ascendancy up game the revs
04:26now get sent for a start start to creep away they go good start by Scaifey excellent start he got the
04:32revs absolutely spot on put all the power to the ground oh dear one of the Kmart cars gone off off
04:37and pit lane that's the second time we've seen that happen today up front there look at this there's
04:42plenty of hustle and muscle up at the front of the pack but most of them get through but that was nasty
04:46off the line we'll come back to the back uh that in a minute because at the moment it's Scaife
04:51and he's doing a good job yeah see a perfect start Radicicic too much wheel spin almost lost his second
04:57place he gained it he bustled his way through turn one that was Steve Richards that went off in the
05:02Kmart Holden he obviously got a little bit of a touch from behind and his teammate or number 12 which
05:08is the uh Greg Murphy that's just exiting pit lane so both Kmart cars out within the first lap Mark Scaife
05:15now winds the big VA up now look at Radishes here's Tander now Tander comes inside with a great
05:20line there he comes round on the outside good bit of work yeah but Radishes got it all wrong he was
05:25on the grass coming out of five Tander got long Saddam got the pace into turn six Tander's been fantastic
05:30down here this place is not intimidated look at this Radishes up the inside now takes the line
05:36beautifully done so he takes his spot back and that's horsepower Paul Radicicic just used the grunt of that
05:40port engine that pulled out fast well the thing is John once you lose your momentum you get a wheel
05:46on the dirt or something like that coming out of the corner you lose that oh look at that Crompton
05:51and Craig oh no Craig is in Crompton is it that's Todd Kelly young Todd Kelly that's the young lions car
05:58oh boy I wouldn't be at all surprised now if they red flag this would at least put the pace car out
06:04so Radishes now and look at this there's been a big change up the front now because it's Radishes
06:09then it's Tander then it's Scaife it's like oh another touch and look at Larry's got involved now
06:15Larry gets on the outside tries to come there darts dancing on the brakes I think they have definitely
06:20forgotten that these cars are meant to be loaded up onto a trailer tomorrow to go across to Perth to
06:24Barbagallo Raceway for round two of the championship this is certainly the most aggressive of all three
06:28rounds we've seen let's look at the start again now watch this crash just a little bit of a jump start
06:34Russell Ingle I think that was have a look here we go now watch the middle of the field here
06:39and you'll see the Kmart car just goes spearing off here we go watch it here we go oh well he was
06:45trying to force his way over onto the inside and I think a lot of that might have been self-inflicted
06:50because we all try and get to the inside of the track to stop people passing us down the inside but
06:54I think he tried to force the issue a little bit too much he certainly came across the front of the
06:58other car but the tap could have been avoided there's been a yellow flag put out the moment
07:03here we are tighter shot this time John yeah again just as Alan says he did get tapped from
07:07the rear but you know if you're going to pull across the front of a car and that's the penalty
07:10you might pay and see the fence move there too well you can see the momentum off the line
07:161350 kilos reversing into that well pace car is out now so all lined up and that's a shame because
07:24gee we were looking for a good scrap there so it's scythe radishes tander
07:31johnny uh johnny bowers up there too which is good to see tony longhurst you car and the color
07:38screen for caltex looks very good yeah i like it it's unusual a lot of the cars oh my god a bit of fresh air
07:43going in there for him air conditioning that looks like a melbourne taxi that one
07:49only one difference he knows where he's going
07:54well it's a shame this has happened has this as you look down in this area this is where
07:58it brought us undone there's the touch bang into the wall wow that's a fair shot for us
08:06glenn's seat's had no luck has he well todd kelly really had nowhere to go there i mean it was a
08:10situation where he was behind another car a gap appeared when that appeared um glenn was there
08:15so a bad break for todd yeah it's just one of those closing gaps you go for it hope you're going to get
08:20through sometimes you do and some occasions here you didn't do it well it's only a six lapper so i'm
08:25not quite sure what we're going to do here because uh unfortunately on a circuit like this once you've
08:30had this sort of an accident it's too dangerous to let them race in that situation and it's going to
08:36take a while to get them off yeah i think you're right as i mean we've got the grand prix sort of
08:40getting closer and closer i would imagine now that by the time they get those cars off the circuit
08:45they'll be pretty well close to uh deciding the race yes and of course remember the fia have to
08:50inspect the circuit it's very important they'll do that right about one o'clock or so and uh if
08:55everything is okay then they'll sanction the circuit for the grand prix now both of you fellas
08:59have been involved with formula one at the highest level the best level when you if you're sitting
09:03in the garage at your motorhome you see this sort of thing happen i mean does it annoy you because
09:08you've got to go out and race on on a dirty race track well the track will be clean but the only
09:12concern you'd have is that you know there's tiny little bits of carbon fiber that can be just trapped
09:16in the cracks in the road and a tire going over that can just suddenly flick it up and and cut down
09:20the tire that's always the concern and let's support races at a grand prix they're there to entertain
09:25the public and give them something to watch prior to the grand prix here's off the line now on board with craig
09:33now here we go we can see tander in front radishes over on the right hand side good start from tander
09:39he's just moving across now to see what i mean about trying to get in front of radishes there so
09:45and a good job he's done to a little bit of it he's done it so very important to get to do what
09:49he did to stop paul from getting it but now paul's gone left the braking way late and taken that position
09:55back yeah really what radishes was able to do is use the braking of mark scaife to slow tander down radishes
10:01didn't have that car in front of us we just elbowed his way back in again tander having done the good
10:06work to get ahead suddenly find himself boxed out see the yellow flags waving now as they are telling
10:14the field just to keep their pace keep their place as they bring them around and todd kelly an accident
10:21that he was wasn't his doing but he just got involved with it glenn seat and by gee i don't know
10:26since uh the last couple of seasons he has had no luck going for him he he's had mechanical problems
10:31that uh we're not used to seeing him have he's been involved in a number of accidents and most of
10:36them haven't been his problem glenn seat i think it might have been crompton then that we saw it must
10:45have been neil crompton yes it must have been neil crompton because he certainly wouldn't be driving that car
10:52that way he's a genius if he is no it must have been neil crompton that uh
11:01that had that chunt so glad to see that glenn is still up and running and uh ready to go again
11:10baguan has gone well you know he started in 10th spot he's now up to fifth
11:13let's hope you can see another lap or two of racing always a big incentive when you've got your
11:21teammate up there on the front of second row of the grid and you're in the same team and uh you're
11:26down on the fourth or fifth row it's a it's a hell of a big carrot to dangle in front of you
11:30well they're just having to keep the tires warm they're weaving around on the circuit and we don't
11:34know how many laps they're going to do under yellow hopefully this is the last when they can get all those
11:37bits and pieces of cars and the remaining cars clear off the track that was on the exit of turn
11:42six to let this race become a race for the final half of course the other thing which will be going
11:47through their minds now is that um are they going to add the amount of laps onto the race or are they
11:53going to say right when the green flag comes out we've only got literally one lap and if that is the
11:58case then then the race face will come on yeah i mean that to me is what will happen they just don't
12:02of the time uh to allow this to go back to sort of the start of lap one again they'll just run the
12:07race from the lap the green flag goes out to the finish and there'll be a sprint to the finish believe
12:11me isn't that a great sight with the trees down here i've got to say that was uh the crowd was just
12:16down slightly on friday but an absolute record crowd yesterday and the people around here today
12:22in my trips back and forth been enormous great crowd daryl i hope the people in melbourne realize how
12:27fortunate they are to have a grand prix circuit in the city because there's an atmosphere you get in a
12:31city race or a home race look at that i mean that is just outstanding and i mean there are so many
12:36cities around the world wish that a park like albert park the only one i know that's any bigger
12:40than albert parks and dublin timmy sheridan timmy sheridan i believe he's with stephen richards
12:46stephen what happened at the start there that was a fair shunt into the safety wall wasn't it
12:50yeah tell me about the uh the kmart racing vt common was not looking too good but i just got a
12:54i got a great start and i just sort of veered across um there's still plenty of room on the inside of
12:58me and i got a tap from behind so i'm i'm honestly not sure where that come from yeah both of the
13:03cars uh in trouble at the start a bit disappointing yeah well you know i mean the object of the exercise
13:08was to stay out of trouble today and that's that's really all we're doing but you know yeah we've got
13:12a fairly damaged commodore okay steve thanks mate good luck next time thanks
13:19back with glenn seaton and uh he's just sitting on board the car there and there's craig
13:24lounge craig lounge uh hasn't looked so comfortable on this track so far i mean we know how fast he is
13:32but he's just been slightly off the pace but uh i mean he's just such a talented driver you give him
13:37half a half a sniff and he's there but he's just seen a little bit more uh relaxed this weekend than
13:42i've seen for a while well you know it's not a championship race so maybe he's just sort of
13:46holding it back a little bit as you know we've got barba gallo next weekend where the championship
13:50starts again timmy sheridan's back in pit lane tim yeah daryl you guys were talking about the
13:56drivers trying to keep their cars in one piece for perth cameron it just didn't happen today
14:00no not at all tim there's a fair bit of carnage out there on the first lap unfortunately neil
14:04crompton got turned around in front of me and i just had absolutely nowhere to go jumped on the
14:08brakes but uh you know this is the result unfortunately we've got perth next week as you
14:13said so there's a bit of work to do so yeah you sure have this it's been a lively race so far hasn't
14:18it uh you know as you say a lot of bump and grind i'm really surprised i've got to be honest because
14:22it's a six lap race everyone knows it's not for points in our championship uh but you know i suppose
14:27it's a grand prix isn't it after all the red light goes out and everyone has a real go yeah red light
14:31goes on red veil comes down thanks cameron thanks tim on you timmy good job down there on pit lane well
14:37the car is still out as you can see the pace car coming up the main straight now
14:41and lights are still flashing so still under yellow caution this is a real shame because uh
14:50the crowd they just love this type of racing and uh to have it finished under these circumstances is
14:54a real disappointment well i think alan they'll try very hard to get this race to finish under green and
15:00this is the end of lap three so we're almost halfway through the race and they're still those cars still
15:04by the side of the track they haven't got them away no but they've pulled them off uh on a better angle
15:08there you can see where they've just pushed them in i think they will race now the drivers have been
15:12around enough times they know where they are they know the track is okay they'll keep stationy yellows
15:16out there they'll not be allowed to overtake in that part of track and it'll only be afterwards when
15:20the green flag comes out they can get back to racing so they've had a good look at where those two
15:24cars have parked and then parked them up against the fence as tight as they can so i'm quite sure we
15:29will get at least two racing laps in let's hope anyway i would say it does by the fact that those two
15:38cars are up against the wall everything looks under control i think we'll get a start next lap round
15:42i work the words just come through green on next lap green on next lap so we will get a race in
15:48for a lap of two anyway two racing laps will remain so this will be a ding-dong battle now it'll be on
15:54now i tell you what if you can hold your breath for two laps it's going to be a cracker because uh i
15:58mean nothing like putting a racing driver under pressure sometimes the best way to get a performance
16:02from a driver is to hold them back until those last moments damage there too remember as jonesy
16:07said the shell championships continue from west australia next weekend so there'll be some
16:12mechanics doing a lot of work the cars were scheduled to go either tonight or tomorrow morning i think
16:17that couple of them might be postponed a bit there's tony longhurst car gee that's uh i reckon that's a
16:21smart color scheme it's really good because he he can now just concentrate on driving he doesn't
16:26have to worry about running the team anymore that's right the stone brothers are responsible for
16:30for the preparation of that car so it allows tony now literally just to turn up at the circuit with
16:34his helmet and jump in and concentrate on doing nothing but racing and a few other pastimes which
16:39he's very fond of really pulling hard down on the wheel on board with craig lowndes and uh he might
16:51just be he's always very good on these sort of restarts great land so he'll be thinking to himself if
16:57i can hit the right slingshot off the line well the front two rows are intact so it'll be that sprint
17:03once again down to turn one and uh i think the dud will be up even higher than it was when this race
17:08started the important thing here john is to really anticipate when that pace car is going to pull off
17:14and not let the guy in front of you be too far uh it's a bit of an art in itself to be able to just
17:19judge that and get the right revs on and get a run at him yes it is and uh scape of course has the
17:25advantage but uh i suspect lines with the grunt that he's got and uh likewise paul radicich are
17:29going to be on his case great shot then you look down the cars weaving and heating up their tires
17:34and here's the traffic beside them uh here at albert park so a great contrast of people wanting to
17:40get on with the race the other ones wanting to get on out of the the traffic jam paul morris doing a
17:45good job too he's in an older model holden and he's uh i think he's up there in about seventh or
17:50eighth position so um a good effort from him big kev looking after him brand new sponsor the motorsport
17:55team he's excited the lights are right so the pairs cars coming in all right so we'll be ready
18:01now for a restart so the lights have gone out here we go get set scale full planet radishes will know
18:07that they're racing again now as they come onto the straight we're gonna cut the laps in here now see
18:12lounge lost out there see he dropped back uh from tanda and it's amazing to see the gap between the cars
18:19now i mean they knew that that that car was going to pull in they should have been right up each
18:23other's backside yeah but look at scape really used his head he got that little bit of advantage
18:27coming off the final turn and look he's just got uncomfortable lead these last two laps well it
18:34comes a two-lap sprint now so mark scape out in front four radishes then it's a guard tander then
18:39lounge they're the top four and this car oh larry under brakes very twitchy looks like he's got a lot
18:47of bias to the back there john with a touring car of course it is always the more rear brakes that
18:51you can have the better because you've got all that weight up the front and as your fuel load and
18:56what have you and the rear tires go if you can stand a lot of rear brakes it's better but uh larry
19:01really got it twitched up under brakes then jason bagwana in the valvaloon car too it's a terrific
19:06job to be up where he is now and there's that uh wrecks that have gone through there pretty safely
19:10only one more turn to go through there what surprised me john i noticed a green flag before those
19:15cars which i think is ridiculous i think your idea of having a stationary yellow before and then a
19:20green after the cars would have been the way to go yes i do i'm surprised they had a wave been at that
19:25point that's mark scape out in front craig lounge trying desperately to stay in touch paul radicic
19:32his car has been so incredibly powerful but it doesn't look like he's making up too much ground
19:36there as he really locks it up he seems to have just dropped that little bit of horsepower because
19:41yesterday and the day before he was rushing up behind the field yes he doesn't seem to be doing
19:45it here this afternoon suddenly his last performance compared to the start of this race earlier well i
19:50tell you i thank goodness for him because without him there wouldn't be too many forward flags flying
19:54looking back now to uh from paul radicic that's satanda all over the back of him that's lounges in behind
20:00him and this garthanda he's been amazing all over the weekend he's been fast and unfortunately got
20:07shuffled off the track and that put him back a little bit but you can see how competitive he is
20:11i mean and this car's got plenty of poke when it gets on a straight line it's no slower than anybody
20:16else here no they've always look at craig lounge though just shaping up now he's trying to get a
20:21draft that's so tander is breaking there in front and lounge that will allow lands but now he's gone to
20:26the outside so i don't doubt very much whether he'll do anything there last lap now last lap to go
20:31round for the the victor is here on the grand prix circuit they're always a show always a lot of
20:38accidents and crashes the very nature of the place just dictates that we're hoping for a real scream
20:43of a race today unfortunately that didn't happen but at least the the v8s have been seen here the
20:48europeans as i've said they love them the formula one mechanics all come out all cheer they just love
20:53the sound of these cars magnificent around here watching larry perkins lost none of the old art of being
20:59a racing driver flying the opposite lock another right foot that doesn't get them any further up
21:03the field in sixth place that's a great shot does isn't it through the trees heading up now with the
21:10boats on the right hand side people actually bring them in uh by truck and then just put them there so
21:15they can sit on the back of their boat and watch the cars yeah it's magnificent from the air you really
21:19get the nice layout there and you see the racing line you can see that black strip of the racing line
21:24where uh over the last three days the cars have been trying to straight line the corners as much
21:29as they can and the track's been getting better and better as the rubber gets laid down yeah well
21:34i mean as the heat and the rubber gets on the track therefore the grip level goes up here we go oh
21:39paul oh dear oh well let's see once there was paul romano bringing up the rear and uh i think it was
21:45ashby or um steve reed steve reed that's right he co-drives with ashby in that car and uh paul had nowhere
21:53to go brad james was involved in that too he's a brand new into a ford this time round and uh pretty
21:58paint job on the car looks terrific aussie male and he's been trying hard he's he said it's going to
22:03take him a while it's only his second race into the car so he's going to settle it down up front
22:08mark scape though still doing a pretty good job no problems here swings it around beautiful new paint
22:13job from the holden racing team basically gone all red this time round and up he comes over the start
22:18finish line he'll take it second one lights go on flashes the lights so mark scape paul radishes
22:24garth panda craig lounge that's how they finish one two three and four as the flags belch out the side
22:30of the holden and holden now add to that tally again they've just uh building and building on
22:35their record here at the grand prix circuits both both in adelaide and both in melbourne well
22:42disappointment that the race had to go under yellow flag for such distance because there was
22:46potentially going to be it's again another crack up there just on the last lap that's what happens
22:52when you run wide get over those curbs onto the grass ryan the baby goes forever ashby's been around
22:57a few times over the weekend and uh spectacular looking paint job on the car and be back to the
