00:00Five rounds down in the Shell Series and things are getting tight at the top.
00:05Just 12 points separates Stape and Tander.
00:08A classic fight between champion and underdog.
00:10Only this dog has more bite than a bull terrier.
00:14Well done to Garth Tander. He flashes the lights of the Valvoline Cullens team. Well done.
00:18Three weeks ago, in the tropical sweat of Darwin's Hidden Valley,
00:22Tander turned up the heat.
00:24His first race win for 2,000,
00:25while reigning champ Lowndes put more depth in his title defence.
00:29Oh, look at this.
00:31Whoa!
00:33Flew-ridden Russell Ingle said he would have been better off staying in bed.
00:38Oh!
00:40Whoa!
00:41And the Valley turned on its usual attraction of knock-em-down, drag-em-out V8 action.
00:47Oh, look at that!
00:49Oh, that's promoters!
00:51Oh, damn it!
00:52Can Ford break Holden's stranglehold
00:54as we welcome you to the streets of our national capital,
00:57the historic first running of the GMC 400.
01:01Live and exclusive to your home of V8 motorsport,
01:05Network 10.
01:08Oh, yeah!
01:09Oh, yeah!
01:12Oh, yeah!
01:13Oh, yeah!
01:14Oh, look at that!
01:15Oh, yeah!
01:18Oh, yeah!
01:18Oh, yeah!
01:19Oh, yeah!
01:21Oh, yeah!
01:22Oh, yeah!
01:23Oh, yeah!
01:24Oh, yeah!
01:25Oh, yeah!
01:26Oh, yeah!
01:34The heart of Canberra, focal point for a unique event in world motorsport.
01:38There are other street circuits, yes,
01:40but none that run boldly past the front door of a nation's parliament.
01:45Hello, I'm Bill Woods.
01:46Welcome to Pit Lane here in Canberra,
01:47where the streets are finally erupting after so much anticipation.
01:51The serenity is gone, yes, but not for long.
01:53It'll be a couple of days of absolute mayhem.
01:55This event brings so much that is new,
01:57not only to the V8 supercars,
02:00but also to Australian motorsport in general.
02:03A fantastic concept.
02:04Let's have a look, firstly, at the location,
02:06which in itself is quite remarkable in world motorsport.
02:09We are going between the old and new parliament houses.
02:12This is a circuit that was initiated by the Canberra Events Corp,
02:16but also Mark's gave help in the design,
02:18and so many marvellous landmarks surround this circuit.
02:22The other unique aspect of this event is, of course,
02:25the format over two days, Saturday and Sunday,
02:28that we'll bring to you.
02:29Firstly, we have the top 15 shootout,
02:31reminding you that it's top 15, not top 10.
02:34And then, of course, we have the first of three races this weekend,
02:37and it will be a 25-lap race, 60 points on offer.
02:42Tomorrow, another 25-lap race with a reverse grid,
02:46and then the major points, 120 points on offer
02:48for a 50-lap race with two scheduled pit stops on the Sunday.
02:52Incredible stuff.
02:53And Barry Sheen, welcome to you.
02:55The hotels, all the accommodation's been booked out,
02:57not only in Canberra for the past week or so,
02:59but also the surrounding towns.
03:01It's quite incredible, really.
03:02You know, it shows you the high esteem the V8s are held in.
03:05You know, to have a race around Parliament House.
03:08I mean, you know, you think about the NASCAR thing in America.
03:11I mean, they've never had a race around the White House, have they?
03:13And the other good thing is there's a small Australian company,
03:17a power tool company, a global machinery company,
03:19that have put everything into sponsoring this race
03:21to get their name known.
03:22You know, they're number two in Australia as it is.
03:25And I just think that...
03:26I was talking to the guys that own the company the other night,
03:28and I just think it's so good.
03:29You know, there's such a good feeling about the race.
03:31Circuit's a little bit narrow, but, you know, it can only get better.
03:34Well, the drivers are coping quite well with it.
03:35And it's freezing.
03:36It is very cold.
03:38And on that subject, let's take a look at the weather for today,
03:41at least in the past week in Canberra.
03:43We've had such extremes.
03:44We've had snow.
03:45We've had sleep.
03:45We've had rain.
03:46We've had minus five.
03:48Maximum today of 11.
03:49But very sunny.
03:50You can see there clear skies,
03:52and there's nothing more blue than a blue sky over Canberra.
03:55It's lovely, clear, fresh air.
03:57It is just a fantastic atmosphere.
03:58And, of course, helping bring the atmosphere on the track to you this weekend
04:01will be our chief commentators, Greg Rust and Mark Osler.
04:04And already in the qualifying and practice we've seen, boys,
04:07we've seen some remarkable times
04:09and such a great spread of drivers and manufacturers through the top 15.
04:13Haven't we, what, Billy?
04:13And it's been quite a nervous night on that note
04:15for the Mitre 10 Ford Racing Team.
04:17Mark Larkham has never had provisional pole position before
04:20for a round of the Shell Championship Series.
04:22He did that yesterday during the course of qualifying,
04:24but Mark coming up in the top 15 shootout,
04:26he's got to fight to defend it.
04:28He sure is going to have to fight.
04:29It's going to be a very interesting weekend,
04:30but the fascinating thing about this race,
04:32it's going to be a real fight for survival.
04:34It may not necessarily be the fastest man in qualifying
04:36who wins this weekend.
04:38This is a very difficult racetrack, very bumpy, very narrow.
04:41You've got to drive with your head and be careful and stay out of trouble.
04:43So we could have a really surprised result here this weekend.
04:46Not just the track conditions as well,
04:47but the format of racing, that reverse grid,
04:49that's certainly going to make it interesting.
04:50And in terms of strategies,
04:52you can walk up and down pit lane here in Canberra,
04:53and there's so many different options that people are looking at.
04:56Oh, what a place to do a reverse grid, isn't it?
04:58It's going to be incredible.
04:59But look, there's a real incentive scheme here too.
05:01There's no point in fudging or trying to sandbag.
05:03You've got to do the best you can in those first two heats
05:05to determine your starting position for the final.
05:07So everyone's really got to go for it.
05:09It's going to be a tough job.
05:10Well, as we said, qualifying was yesterday.
05:12Here's how they finished qualifying,
05:13and this is what it looked like in terms of the top 15 shootout.
05:16But on provisional pole position,
05:17Mark Larkham, Craig Lowndes, Paul Radisic,
05:19Tony Longhurst, Mark Scaife,
05:21the man who's been involved in the design of this circuit,
05:23fifth fastest.
05:24Now, there is a question mark over John Bauer.
05:26He finished seventh fastest,
05:27but there is a bit of a problem.
05:28Officials have found some dilemma with the cat racing forward,
05:31and he may be starting off the back of the grid today.
05:33That's still to be decided.
05:35Cameron McClain in there too.
05:36Glenn Seton, good performance.
05:37Garth Tander, a little bit further back than he would like to be,
05:40but some good performances here.
05:41Look at that, Stephen Ellery,
05:42right up there in 11th position.
05:44Stephen Richard, Larry Perkins, McConville,
05:46good strong performance in the autopro machine.
05:48Paul Wheel, Paul Morris in the top 20.
05:50Some of those gnomes you mentioned
05:51jumping up in that second qualifying session.
05:52Neil Crompton, much further back than he would like.
05:54Mark Poole, Forbes and Baird in 24th position.
05:58Yeah, Baird, he was very disappointed with that performance
06:00coming here.
06:01A new track, no previous knowledge for any other team,
06:03so he thought there'd be a bit of an advantage for him,
06:05but it's been a very tough weekend so far.
06:07And it's only going to get tougher, Billy.
06:09Yes, it's a beautiful circuit,
06:11and there's so much to offer in terms of scenery
06:13and, of course, famous landmarks in the national capital.
06:15But it also, of course,
06:17is offering some problems for the design,
06:19and that is the configuration of the streets themselves
06:22and the curb and guttering around.
06:23It's 3.9 kilometres,
06:25and there are, as you can see, a few kinks
06:27where the drivers will be attempting to go as flat as they can,
06:30but there's some very, very hard braking
06:32and some very extreme manoeuvring required here
06:35in what is a fairly narrow circuit.
06:36So a few passing areas, maximum speed,
06:39240 to 250 kilometres an hour,
06:41should be quite exciting.
06:42And Neil Crompton, our own Neil Crompton,
06:44has already had a good, solid run round it.
06:46Let's check out the Ford inside line.
06:48Well, street circuits are supposed to be wild,
06:51and this is one of the wildest.
06:53Welcome to Canberra.
06:54Four kilometres of twisty, bumpy, narrow,
06:58real wild motor racing.
07:00It's been a few years since I've done some motocross,
07:02and it looks like I'm doing it again.
07:04I'm not going to bother with corner numbers.
07:05There's too many to count.
07:07All I can tell you is that this is a fantastic little track to drive on.
07:11It's so demanding.
07:13It demands so much of the driver,
07:14so much of the car.
07:16If you can get your suspension and balance right round here,
07:18you can be quick.
07:19If it's off even a couple of percentage points,
07:22you are in big trouble.
07:23Look at the proximity of the walls here,
07:26and think about just how slippery it is.
07:28This is a normal public road,
07:29so there's dirt and garbage all over the place.
07:32It will improve as the weekend wears,
07:34but right at the moment, she's still pretty slippery.
07:37Plus, it's also extremely cold.
07:39There's Parliament House.
07:40That's not something you see every day when you go motor racing,
07:43let me tell you.
07:44This is the fastest part of the track, 220km.
07:47So there's not a huge amount of pace here,
07:50but it hasn't looked like it's kind of me at the moment,
07:52and things start to pucker up a bit,
07:54because there's certainly enough pace
07:55given the amount of concrete around.
07:57Back to first gear.
07:59Big lumps and bumps everywhere.
08:01That's it.
08:01Get stuck into those concrete walls.
08:03Shave a couple of flour off the paint.
08:06About 200 on Ks down here.
08:08Chicanes are very, very, very tight.
08:10You can use the ripple strips just a little bit.
08:12We're back to first again.
08:16Busy as a one-armed paperhacker.
08:18Up to fourth gear.
08:19Little glimpse of fifth.
08:21About 150.
08:22Hard on the peaks.
08:24Blake Burley Griffin over there on the left.
08:26Hope I don't end up in it.
08:27Whoops.
08:28Up on two wheels for a minute.
08:29This will be the bumpiest part of the course.
08:31The final corner.
08:33Up to fourth briefly.
08:35Little dab on the back.
08:36Back to third.
08:38Ease the throttle on.
08:39So if you nail it, I'll run the forward side.
08:41Which is definitely not a good look.
08:42Okay.
08:43That's one hot lap of Canva.
08:45All you've got to do is stay on those walls.
08:49Neil Compton with the forward inside line.
08:51After the break, the top 15 shootout.
08:53Stay with us.
09:09100 and that is a perfect mixture of serenity and steel.
09:26The V8 supercars about to hit the track for the top 15.
09:30Shootout, your commentators.
09:31Welcome back.
09:32Greg Raston, Mark Osler.
09:33Thank you, Billy.
09:35And what a sight here in the nation's capital.
09:39The V8 supercars have spent a little bit of time getting to know this road course now.
09:43And this is the first of the competitors in the top 15 shootout.
09:4626-year-old Cameron McConville sneaks in courtesy of the fact that John Bowe has been relegated to the rear of the grid
09:53because of an infringement, a technical infringement.
09:57Bowe was inside the top 15 yesterday.
09:58So this is the first ever time we have seen Cameron McConville contest a top 15 shootout.
10:05And in fact, this team, it's the first time they've ever been inside the top 50% of qualifying.
10:11So the Rod Nash Racing boys very excited about the prospects
10:14as McConville now unleashes his bid to grab pole for the GMC 400.
10:19Best result so far this year has been 22nd.
10:21That was his best qualifying performance at Eastern Creek earlier on.
10:24So this is a major step up for the Autopro team.
10:28Cameron McConville, the 26-year-old Victorian,
10:31having a wonderful weekend on the streets of Canberra.
10:34It's a great opportunity for some of these lower-funded teams
10:37to try and even the score with the top runners
10:39because there's no previous data from this track.
10:42So it's a clean slate for everyone.
10:44This has been a wonderful effort for McConville.
10:46As he heads around the back part of the circuit.
10:49Oh, just heads out toward State Circle.
10:53Fastest part of the circuit building up to 240, 245 kilometres an hour.
10:58With the regulation 3.5 to 1 dip, the cars have to run at Canberra.
11:02They're not finding sixth gear around here.
11:05So fifth gear is top, and there's your lap time at the bottom of the screen.
11:08McConville will be looking to try and get to the mark somewhere around the time mark.
11:15Larkham said yesterday during qualifying, a 1.44.09.
11:20He works his way down towards Flynn Place,
11:23and there'll be a left-hand or a right-hand chicane, I should say,
11:26coming up in the Autopro Commodore.
11:27The 26-year-old, former Audi Super Touring driver,
11:311996 Australian GT production car champion,
11:34as McConville gets up on two wheels.
11:36He's working now towards the start-finish line.
11:39Former Formula 4 champion.
11:41What can the youngster from Victoria do
11:43as he goes to try and grab pole position for the inaugural GMC 400?
11:48And he comes across the line, a 1.46.08.
11:53Well, the quickest time yesterday,
11:55Mark Larkham on provisional pole, a 1.44.09.
11:58That was said later in the day.
12:01And changeable track conditions here.
12:03The weather very, very cold.
12:04I saw a few of the teams running these special discs,
12:08which clip over the outside of the wheels,
12:09try and get some temperature into the tyres
12:11by trapping that brake heat with inside the rim.
12:15Here's Larry Perkins now,
12:18in the Castrol Commodore.
12:1913 degrees on track temperature,
12:26so quite a stark contrast
12:28to the sort of temperatures we had in the hot and humid conditions of Darwin
12:33only a few weeks ago at the previous round.
12:35Just 11 degrees in Canberra today.
12:38Great to see a lot of the fans already getting right behind this event.
12:41As Bill Woods mentioned a little while ago,
12:45very difficult to get accommodation for this event.
12:47People have really embraced it.
12:50And this is going to be a real street fight around Canberra.
12:54Perkins exits the chicane at Flint Place
12:59and working his way towards the start-finish line
13:01in the Castrol Commodore.
13:02Got up inside the top 15
13:04in the second half of the qualifying session yesterday.
13:07Surprised a lot of them.
13:08Larry flashes across the line.
13:10Does he go better than McConville?
13:13Well, we'll find out at the end of this lap.
13:15He's got a nice build-up to it.
13:17Good approach to pit straight.
13:19220 kilometres an hour there on their approach
13:21to that incredibly tight turn one
13:22as he swings it out through turn two.
13:2490 kilometres an hour working the suspension very hard
13:27as they come up toward Queen Victoria Terrace
13:28and around the back of Old Parliament House.
13:30Real physical track.
13:31You can see how much air they get under the car.
13:33The driver's trying to chop the circuit down
13:35as short as they can.
13:36Look at that.
13:36The undertray scrapes on the ground.
13:39Very, very tough circuit physically
13:40both on the driver and on the car.
13:42That is a marvellous shot that the road
13:44really has quite a crown in it there, Mark.
13:46And you saw Larry monstering the Castrol Commodore
13:49across the top of it getting plenty of air.
13:52Now, making his way up towards State Circle
13:56on the exit of Kings Avenue.
13:57They really open up the cars here
13:59and get plenty of speed out of them
14:00in the Castrol Commodore.
14:0150-year-old Larry Perkins.
14:04Tremendously experienced driver.
14:07Competed in Formula One.
14:08Was European Formula Three champion back in 1970.
14:11Guy, 1975, I should say.
14:13A guy with enormous experience
14:14and a great variety of cars.
14:17This is a situation he will be enjoying.
14:19Maximum pressure all out on the circle on your own.
14:21Oh, just locks, almost locks the rear brakes
14:24as he turns into Turn 12.
14:26That very tight chicane.
14:27Halfway down Flynn Drive.
14:28Now into Flynn Place.
14:30Flat out down the hill.
14:31180 kilometres an hour.
14:32We've got the fifth gear on the approach to Turn 13.
14:35But you've got to be so accurate.
14:37Tidy around here.
14:38There's a bit of dirt, few leaves and things on the track.
14:40And if you get it wrong,
14:41you're going to hit those concrete walls.
14:43So you've got to be very, very precise.
14:46LP.
14:48The completion of his flying lap.
14:50Will it be good enough to beat Cameron McConville
14:52in the Auto Pro Commodore?
14:53We will soon find out.
14:54The Castrol Commodore goes across the line.
14:56A 1.44.94.
14:59That is a very quick time from Larry Perkins.
15:01Yeah, first into the 1.44s this morning.
15:04Mark Larkham.
15:05Provisional pole yesterday.
15:06A 1.44.09.
15:08But he's gone quicker than he did yesterday.
15:11So it's going to be interesting to see
15:13what this ultimate pole position time will be.
15:15Very, very critical.
15:16Probably the most critical track
15:17on the Shell National Tour
15:19to get pole position.
15:21The drivers are saying it's so narrow
15:22that if you get a driver out in front,
15:25it's going to be very easy to box the cars in.
15:27And then we've got pit stops.
15:28We've got all sorts of exciting stuff to come.
15:30Trying to pick a winner this weekend
15:31is just about impossible.
15:32Here's Stephen Richards.
15:34A man who would like to win
15:35on the streets of Canberra this weekend.
15:37And the Kmart Racing Commodore
15:38as he heads around
15:40to warm the car up
15:41before he goes on on his flying lap.
15:44Stevie recently became a daddy too.
15:46Should say hi to Angela Richards
15:48who is no doubt watching.
15:50And welcome to the world,
15:51little Clayton Richard
15:51with a granddad like Jimmy
15:53and a father like Stevie.
15:54No doubt you'll end up playing golf.
15:57So Stephen,
15:58this is his sighting lap
15:58in the Kmart Commodore.
16:00Winner at Mount Panorama Mathis last year
16:02with Greg Murphy.
16:04Then it was in Winslivery.
16:06Now these are the Kmart Commodores.
16:08He's going to compare his times, Greg,
16:10when he comes out today.
16:11Larry was a lot quicker
16:12than he was yesterday.
16:13Stephen Richards at 1.45.61
16:15was his provisional qualifying time.
16:16So judging by the speed of Perkins,
16:19should be a little more speed left
16:20than the Kmart Commodore
16:22as he hustles around here.
16:26Very, very tight, demanding circuit.
16:28Lights on.
16:30Stephen Richards
16:30has been the best start
16:33to the season so far
16:34in the Kmart cars.
16:35Still struggling
16:35tend to get qualifying speed
16:36out of these machines.
16:40Thundering down
16:41through the trees.
16:42Hard under brakes
16:43as he swings through
16:44the combination eight,
16:45turn nine.
16:46Pulls into Kings Avenue.
16:48Hard on the acceleration.
16:49Just brushes the concrete wall.
16:50Building up to 200 kilometres an hour
16:52on the approach to turn 10.
16:54Back to second gear.
16:56Really hustling this car.
16:57He's got to get this turn right
16:58because it's the fastest part
16:59of the track
16:59through State Circle.
17:01Up to 240 k's.
17:04Stephen Richards
17:04on maximum attack.
17:05Can't tell you
17:07just how excited
17:08we have been
17:09about this event.
17:10The streets of Canberra
17:11just look marvellous.
17:13A very picturesque setting
17:14and you won't miss
17:14a moment of the action here.
17:15We've got more than 24 cameras
17:17plus a stack of in-cars
17:19as well
17:19to bring you all of it
17:20as it happens
17:21around the streets of Canberra.
17:22This is Stephen Richards
17:24embarking on his run
17:25to try and grab pole position.
17:27He too, like Larry Perkins,
17:29is another
17:29who surprised
17:30or went extremely well,
17:32I should say,
17:32in that second qualifying session
17:34yesterday
17:34and nudged his way
17:35up inside the top 15.
17:3827-year-old Stephen Richards,
17:40son of course
17:41of touring car
17:41great Jim Richards.
17:43Born in Auckland,
17:45New Zealand,
17:45now based down in Victoria.
17:46Two times Bathurst win
17:47the guy's actually on a hat-trick
17:49going into the FAI 1000
17:50this year.
17:51He won it for Ford
17:51in 1998.
17:52He won it for Holden last year.
17:53Can Stephen Richards
17:54do it again at Bathurst?
17:55Can he do it here
17:56on the streets of Canberra?
17:58A 1.4575.
18:00So that puts him
18:01second in the order.
18:03So checking the Shell Helix
18:05race score now.
18:07Very tense battle
18:08in the top 15 shootout.
18:10Larry Perkins
18:11was able to better
18:12his time from yesterday
18:14but not so
18:15for Stephen Richards
18:15and Cameron McConville.
18:17More to come
18:17after the break
18:18on your home of motorsport.
18:24The top 15 shootout
18:25is about to continue
18:26here at the GMC 400.
18:28Stephen Johnson,
18:29another of the young bulls.
18:30Can he catch the old bull?
18:31Larry Perkins
18:32who for a change
18:33is quicker
18:34than the young ones.
18:36Larry was in fact
18:37seven tenths of a second
18:39faster, Billy,
18:40than his best time yesterday.
18:42Dipping into the 144s
18:43for the first time.
18:43Now we watch
18:44the first of the
18:45Dick Johnson racing entries.
18:47Both of these cars
18:47are in the top 15 shootout.
18:50This is Stephen Johnson,
18:51the 25-year-old.
18:52Lives these days,
18:53of course,
18:53on the Gold Coast.
18:55Made his Shell
18:56Championship Series
18:57debut in 1994.
19:00And has really had
19:01a, I guess,
19:02a quiet year
19:03in terms of his
19:03full assault
19:04on the championship.
19:05Just easing into
19:06the drive.
19:07Now you see
19:10they're a picture
19:10of perfect concentration.
19:12The youngster
19:12working very hard
19:14down past
19:15the National Archives
19:16Centre
19:16towards Kings Avenue.
19:19Now they swing
19:20up on Kings Avenue
19:21in fact
19:22towards
19:23the State Circle.
19:24Best qualifying performance
19:26so far
19:26from the Queenslander
19:27was eighth
19:28when he was
19:29at Barbagallo
19:29in WA.
19:31So he wants to go
19:32a lot better than that
19:33this weekend.
19:33Stephen Johnson.
19:34A study of concentrations.
19:36He swings through
19:36State Circle.
19:42Maximum speed.
19:43Smoke belching
19:44from the exhaust
19:44as he gets hard
19:45in the brakes
19:46at the end
19:47of State Circle.
19:48Swings through
19:48Turn 11
19:49onto Flynn Drive.
19:50Heading down
19:51toward one of the most
19:52demanding corners
19:52on the circuit.
19:53This very slow
19:54chicane.
19:56Right back to
19:5770 kilometres an hour
19:58second gear.
19:59Some cars
19:59are even using
19:59first gears
20:00through some of the chicane.
20:01Look how close he comes
20:02to the concrete wall
20:02on the way out.
20:03Stephen Johnson
20:04is trying
20:04and trying hard.
20:06He was right back
20:06somewhere in the
20:07mid-twenties
20:08yesterday in qualifying.
20:10All of a sudden
20:11he found some speed
20:12right toward the end
20:12of the session.
20:13Jumped up to 12.
20:13Oh look at him
20:14block the brakes
20:14as he turns in.
20:16He's right on
20:17the limit of adhesion
20:17here.
20:18Stephen Johnson.
20:19He wants
20:19position.
20:20Stephen is the only
20:21second generation
20:22racer in the field.
20:23Son of Dick Johnson.
20:25The legend
20:25and he swings up
20:26towards the start
20:27finish line.
20:27Will Stephen Johnson
20:28be able to topple
20:29Larry Perkins
20:30who is top
20:30of the times
20:31at the moment?
20:32Johnson can't do it.
20:33A 1.45.79
20:34that currently
20:35leaves him third.
20:37Well that's an
20:37impressive time
20:38from Larry Perkins
20:39isn't it?
20:391.44.94
20:41for the Castrol
20:42back veteran.
20:4450 years of age
20:45still going strong.
20:47Stephen Johnson
20:47big career ahead
20:48of him this young
20:49fella.
20:4925 years of age
20:50making his shell
20:52series debut
20:53in 2000.
20:54Doing a good job
20:55on the streets
20:56of Canberra.
20:57Here's Greg Murphy
20:57team mate to
20:58Stephen Richards
20:59in the second
20:59of the Kmart
21:00Commodores
21:01and he has had
21:03pretty difficult
21:04build up so far
21:05some sort of
21:06mechanical gremlins
21:07causing him
21:09problems throughout
21:10practice and
21:10qualifying.
21:11Hopefully the team
21:12have sorted that
21:12out before we get
21:14into action later
21:15on today in race
21:15one.
21:16Merv shared his
21:17second Bathurst
21:18victory with Stephen
21:19Richards just last
21:20year and of course
21:22his first victory
21:23on the mountain
21:23in 1996 with
21:25Craig Lowndes.
21:26Those days was
21:27with the Holden
21:27racing team now
21:28the Kmart racing
21:30operation what
21:31can Murph do
21:31as he commences
21:33his run
21:3527 year old
21:37now lives in
21:37Melbourne
21:38very proud
21:40Kiwi in fact
21:41just an indication
21:43of how difficult
21:44it's been for
21:44Murphy this year
21:45his best qualifying
21:46performance so far
21:47was seventh
21:47oh he can really
21:48sideways
21:49I don't know
21:50he managed to
21:51hang on to that
21:51that was a full
21:52power slide
21:53he kept the car
21:54going in the right
21:55direction but that's
21:55cost him a lot of
21:56time and he would
21:57be filthy about
21:58that too he
21:58doesn't like losing
21:59time in situations
22:00like that that's a
22:01marvellous shot as
22:02they swing out of
22:02the exit of the
22:03Queen Victoria Terrace
22:04down towards the
22:05right-hander which
22:06brings them on to
22:06Kings Avenue
22:07just incredible when
22:08you think how close
22:09these blokes are to
22:10disaster look how
22:11close they're going
22:12this car is
22:13travelling at speeds
22:14up to excessive
22:14200 kilometres an
22:15hour along an
22:16eight metre wide
22:17corridor there's
22:18concrete either side
22:19one slip and you
22:21can pay a very
22:21very heavy price
22:22there is just no
22:24margin for error
22:25around the streets
22:26of Canberra
22:27Murphy now down
22:28along the state
22:29circle to the
22:30left-hand side of
22:31him the new
22:32parliament house
22:33he'll swing right
22:34here into Flynn
22:35Drive get an idea
22:37of his time for you
22:38there it is on the
22:39bottom of your screen
22:40in comparison to
22:41Larry Perkins with
22:42this stage is the
22:44man at the top of
22:45the table can the
22:4727 year old Kiwi do
22:48anything about it
22:49two times winner
22:50of the Bathurst
22:521000 two times
22:54winner of the
22:55Sandown 500
22:55well he's had
22:56experience in
22:57Le Mans
22:57finished second in
22:58class there back in
22:591996 he was also
23:00very strong in
23:01open wheelers back
23:02in his home country
23:03of New Zealand
23:03winning the New
23:04Zealand Grand Prix
23:05he's a guy with
23:06enormous heart
23:07drives with great
23:07courage and really
23:09attacks it
23:10let's see what he
23:12can do here
23:12Stephen Richards
23:14in the 145s can
23:16Greg Murphy go
23:16quicker than his
23:17teammate brings it
23:18out onto pit
23:19straight a 146.52
23:22well just goes to
23:22show when he had
23:23that big power slide
23:24earlier in the lap
23:25that would have
23:26cost him bulk time
23:27take a closer look
23:28at that moment for
23:31you in fact it's
23:31right around this
23:32part of the circuit
23:32that Greg is
23:33travelling along now
23:34that it occurred
23:35heading up towards
23:36the Queen Victoria
23:37Terrace quite a
23:38fast left-hander
23:39as we take a look
23:40on the Shell Helix
23:40replay let's have a
23:41look at it here
23:42all crossed up
23:43Murphy in the Kmart
23:44Commodore keeps it
23:46he would have had to
23:47get out of the gas
23:48there too
23:48so under this
23:50sort of pressure
23:51situation he just
23:52cannot afford to
23:53make even the
23:54slightest error
23:54Larry Perkins' lap
23:56is looking particularly
23:57impressive now
23:57144.94 he's the
23:59only car to get
24:00into the 44s so far
24:01Larry's time
24:05almost a second
24:05mark quicker than
24:07Stephen Richards
24:07we now turn our
24:09attention to a young
24:10guy who co-drove so
24:12superbly with Paul
24:13Radisic last season
24:14at Mount Panarama
24:15Bathurst they
24:16dominated the event
24:17before the car
24:18dropped out in what
24:20could only be
24:20described as cruel
24:21circumstances I guess
24:22this is Stephen
24:23Ellery in the
24:25Super Cheap Autos
24:26Falcon
24:26his best qualifying
24:27performance so far
24:29this year
24:29a 15th at the
24:31Adelaide 500
24:32he's really trying to
24:36get power to the
24:37ground as he builds
24:38up speed to launch
24:39into his qualifying
24:40lap that's not the
24:40way he would have
24:41liked to start it
24:41that corner catches
24:42you out so badly
24:43Mark because it's
24:44so off camera
24:45they tend to come
24:45out of that
24:46they hook that
24:47left hander and the
24:47back end steps out
24:48so easily and that's
24:49exactly what happened
24:50for the 25 year old
24:51who resides on the
24:53Gold Coast
24:53Stephen Ellery
24:54probably another one
24:54of these Gold Coast
24:55residents that's
24:56struggling with the
24:56cooler 11 degree
24:58temperatures here in
24:59Canberra
24:59well he's a guy
25:01when you look at his
25:03pedigree at Bathurst
25:04most impressive
25:05did a double stint
25:05with Tony Longhurst
25:06back in 1996
25:08when they finished
25:08third outright for the
25:09Castrol team
25:10he led most of
25:12Bathurst last year
25:12don't forget with
25:13Paul Radisic until
25:14that crushing
25:15punctured tyre only
25:1720 laps from home
25:18oh look at the
25:19smoke coming
25:19he's damaged the
25:20car or is that a
25:21long break
25:21oh this is an
25:25absolutely wild lap
25:26from Stephen Ellery
25:27he's really giving it
25:29everything
25:29his moment in the
25:31sun the super cheap
25:31autos team
25:32switching allegiances
25:34to Stephen Ellery
25:36at AU Falcon
25:38it's been a very
25:39difficult year for the
25:40team so far
25:41but getting up in
25:42this top 15
25:43and one of the most
25:44prestigious events of
25:45the year
25:45earned plenty of
25:47brownie points
25:47hard under brakes
25:48at the end of
25:49state circle
25:49swings it back
25:52onto Flynn Drive
25:53Stephen Ellery
25:54looking for a good
25:55time here
25:55Larry Perkins
25:56the only man so
25:57far to improve
25:57on the times
25:58he set yesterday
25:59this has been a
26:01good performance
26:01so far
26:02the super cheap
26:03autos Ford
26:04since they arrived
26:05here in Canberra
26:06Stephen you may
26:07recall
26:08not so long ago
26:09at the V8
26:11support races
26:11at IndyCar
26:12he was doing
26:13quite well
26:13until he
26:14crashed down
26:15up there as well
26:15so he tends to
26:16like the street
26:17circuits as the
26:17youngster gets up
26:19on two wheels
26:19as he works his
26:20way towards the
26:21start finish line
26:22this is a quick
26:23one but it could
26:24also be costly
26:25he's gotten up
26:25on two wheels
26:26there and has
26:26been a little
26:26tailier times
26:27Stephen Ellery
26:29what can he do
26:29as he flashes
26:30towards the line
26:31sideways
26:31almost clips the
26:32wall and he's
26:33gone second fastest
26:34a 1.45
26:355.7
26:36not enough to
26:37knock Larry Perkins
26:38off the top
26:39well that showed
26:40great courage
26:41didn't it
26:41that was real
26:42heart in the mouth
26:42stuff
26:43Stephen Ellery
26:43just gave it
26:44everything
26:44he was just
26:45really threading
26:46the needle
26:47so close to
26:47brushing the wall
26:48on a number
26:48of occasions
26:49there
26:49an outstanding
26:50performance
26:51Shell Helix
26:52race score
26:53the tidy lap
26:53of Larry Perkins
26:54is still the best
26:55we'll be back
26:56after the break
26:56with more
26:57GMC 400
26:58there's only one
27:00way to catch

27:11how the clouds
27:12have parted
27:12the snow
27:13has departed
27:13and we are set
27:15for more
27:16great action
27:16on track
27:17here on the
27:17GMC 400
27:18here's the man
27:19who led the
27:19Shell Championship
27:20until the lead
27:20was wrested away
27:21by Mark Scaife
27:22can he take the
27:23contest to him
27:24again today
27:24Garth Tander
27:25well that's the
27:26question on
27:27everyone's lips
27:27Billy
27:27the 23 year old
27:29now resides in
27:30Melbourne
27:30former WA resident
27:31grew up there
27:32winner of the

27:34in 1997
27:35finished 5th
27:36in the Shell
27:37Championship Series
27:37in 1999
27:38but this has been
27:39a much stronger
27:40year for him so far
27:41currently sits
27:412nd in the
27:42points table
27:42behind series
27:44leader Mark Scaife
27:45had a bit of a
27:46disastrous run
27:47in the 2nd race
27:48at Eastern Creek
27:49the youngster
27:49in the
27:50Wolverine Cummins
27:50Commodore
27:51but made amends
27:52for it
27:52at Darwin
27:53with a victory
27:53in that 3rd race
27:54and a good
27:55consistent performance
27:56all day
27:56listen to the
27:57Commodore
27:58as he slides his
27:59way up onto
28:00Kings Avenue
28:00he is really
28:01trying
28:02so far
28:02this has been
28:03a pretty
28:03masterful display
28:04of controlled
28:04aggression
28:05from Garth Tander
28:05he is driving
28:06that car
28:07right to its
28:08maximum
28:08and he's
28:08managing to
28:09keep it
28:09pretty tidy
28:10a couple of
28:10little wisps
28:11of smoke
28:12as he locks
28:12the brake
28:12turning into
28:13corners
28:13but nothing
28:13outwardly
28:15too costly
28:16at the moment
28:16this is looking
28:17like a fast lap
28:17from Garth Tander
28:19the 23 year old
28:20from Perth
28:20in WA
28:21and he really
28:23has been
28:23a sensation

28:33and the very
28:34dedicated team
28:35that worked
28:35with him
28:35because they're
28:37doing an
28:37outstanding job
28:38in 2000
28:39giving this man
28:40the equipment
28:40he needs
28:40to continue
28:42this fight
28:42let's hope
28:42it goes
28:43right through
28:43the series
28:44all the way
28:44down to the
28:44FII 1000
28:45if you've just
28:47joined us
28:47this is the
28:48fight to determine
28:49who is the
28:50king of the
28:51streets of Canberra
28:51in terms of
28:52grabbing pole
28:53position for the
28:53GMC 400
28:54right now
28:55Larry Perkins
28:55the time to
28:56beat a
28:56144.94
28:58can the
28:5923 year old
28:59who currently
29:00sits second
29:01in the championship
29:01beat that time
29:02he swings up
29:03towards the
29:03start finish line
29:04this looks like
29:04a good one
29:05he's getting
29:05very close
29:06to the wall
29:06a 144.1
29:08Garth Tander
29:09goes to the top
29:10well
29:11what an outstanding
29:12driver
29:13look quick
29:13but you can
29:13never tell
29:14until that stopwatch
29:15closes the lap
29:16down
29:16and he's found
29:17eight tenths of a
29:18second on Larry
29:19Perkins
29:19that's a phenomenal
29:20drive from the
29:2023 year old
29:21Garth Tander
29:22goes to the top
29:23of the order
29:23now
29:24we get
29:25the second
29:26of the Fords
29:27out on the track
29:28it's Glenn Seaton
29:30who's been doing
29:31an outstanding job
29:32in the Shell
29:32championship series
29:33the last three rounds
29:34he's been on the
29:35podium
29:35he's caught his way
29:36up to third
29:37in the points
29:37476 championship
29:40points compared
29:40to 596
29:41for the championship
29:42leader
29:43Seaton is really
29:44in this battle
29:44that's a terrific
29:45shot
29:46our Ford
29:46in car
29:47camera showing
29:48you the way
29:48around with Glenn
29:48Seaton
29:49I can tell you
29:49that that face
29:50shot that you
29:50can see there
29:51will change
29:51dramatically
29:52during the course
29:54of his hot lap
29:55to try and grab
29:55pole position
29:56Seaton really
29:58grits the teeth
29:58as he gets into it
29:59you can see the way
30:01he's just really
30:02leaning on that
30:02wheel
30:03just trying to
30:05weave backwards
30:05and forwards
30:06to stort that
30:06tyre case as much
30:07as possible
30:08to get maximum
30:09heat into that
30:10rubber
30:10to get these
30:11tyres
30:11their optimum
30:12operating temperature
30:13before he goes
30:14out and gives
30:14this car
30:14everything he's
30:15got
30:15Seaton now
30:17full throttle
30:18as he swings
30:19round this
30:20very very long
30:21right hander
30:22you can see
30:22it goes under
30:23Commonwealth Avenue
30:23there points it
30:24up toward
30:25the V8 paddock
30:26and that long
30:27pit straight
30:28out over the
30:29white line
30:30and Seaton
30:30now
30:31he's on his
30:31hot one
30:32220 k's
30:33on the approach
30:33to this incredibly
30:34tight turn one
30:35twice the champion
30:36in the Shell
30:38series
30:38his last
30:39series victory
30:401997
30:41right now
30:43sits third
30:44in the point
30:45score
30:45just ahead
30:46of Paul Radisic
30:47one of the most
30:47experienced drivers
30:48in the field
30:49originally from
30:50Sydney
30:50and have been
30:51based in
30:51Victoria for many
30:52many years
30:52129 championship
30:55stars for the
30:56Ford star
30:568 pole position
30:5717 wins
30:58he's been on
30:59the podium
30:5948 times
31:00incredibly
31:01consistent
31:01performer
31:02and he's
31:03really got a
31:04fight on his
31:04hands here
31:04look at the
31:05way he talks
31:05his way around
31:06this circuit
31:06he talks to
31:07the car
31:07he talks to
31:08himself
31:08trying to make
31:09sure he gets
31:10maximum speed
31:10out of every
31:11turn
31:11back through
31:13the gears
31:14off King's
31:16Avenue
31:16interstate
31:17circle
31:18see the enormous
31:19plumes of smoke
31:19coming from the
31:20exhaust
31:20that's because
31:21the car's in
31:21qualifying trim
31:23they set up
31:23the electronic
31:24engine management
31:24system
31:25so they're
31:25tipping a lot
31:26of fuel
31:26through the
31:26engine to
31:27make maximum
31:27horsepower
31:28amazing
31:30amazing layout
31:32here at Canberra
31:33this is the
31:34christening of it
31:35if you will
31:35a lot of the
31:37drivers are
31:37describing it
31:38as a cross
31:38maybe between
31:39the Macau
31:39street circuit
31:40others are
31:42saying that it's
31:42got a lot of
31:43the Gold Coast
31:44characteristics about
31:45it
31:45Seton swings out
31:46of the roundabout
31:48heading up
31:48Flynn Place
31:49now
31:50you can see
31:50on the bottom
31:51of his screen
31:51there
31:51an idea
31:52of the
31:52time that
31:53he's doing
31:53the man
31:54he has to
31:54beat
31:54Garth Tander
31:55did it on
31:56the previous
31:56lap
31:56the 23
31:57rolled
31:57a 144
31:5910
31:59Seton
32:00swings out
32:00of that
32:01chicane area
32:02gets up
32:02on two wheels
32:03and the
32:03Ford Tickford
32:03Racing
32:04Falcon
32:05heading towards
32:06the start
32:06finish line
32:07what can
32:07the Victorian
32:08driver do
32:09hard on the
32:11throttle now
32:12as he comes
32:13out over the
32:13line
32:13a 44
32:1462
32:15a 144
32:1662
32:16that put
32:17Seton
32:17second in
32:17the order
32:18but not fast
32:19enough
32:19to knock off
32:20Garth Tander
32:20good
32:23consistent
32:24tiny lap
32:24from Seton
32:25lost a little
32:26bit of time
32:26all the way
32:28around the track
32:28it doesn't take
32:29much to lose
32:30a half a second
32:30over a 3.9
32:31kilometre track
32:32that looked like
32:33a fast accurate
32:33lap from Seton
32:34but not quite as
32:35fast as the
32:35Valvoline
32:36Cummins machine
32:37keep in mind
32:38the only pole
32:39position
32:39that Garth Tander
32:41has previously
32:42in the Shell
32:42Champions Series
32:43was at the
32:43Adelaide 500
32:45and that was a
32:45single car top
32:4610 shootout
32:47so maybe this
32:48high pressure
32:48single lap
32:49format really
32:49suits the
32:50youngster
32:50and here's a
32:52man we haven't
32:52seen at the
32:53pointy end of
32:54the field all
32:54year
32:54it's been a
32:55very very
32:55tough season
32:56for the
32:56Greenfield
32:57Mowers
32:57operation
32:57Cameron
32:58McLean
32:59he was
32:59absolutely
33:00top dog
33:00in the
33:01privateer
33:01battle last
33:02year
33:02one of the
33:03decanter
33:03in the
33:03ex-Dick
33:04Johnson
33:04Racing
33:04Falcon
33:05this year
33:05though
33:05things not
33:06going quite
33:07so well
33:08for the
33:08Queensland
33:08based
33:09operation
33:09but he
33:10really does
33:11love street
33:12circuits
33:12Cameron
33:12McLean
33:13and his
33:14qualifying
33:14performance
33:15yesterday
33:15proves that
33:16he's up
33:16in the
33:16top 15
33:17and looking
33:17strong
33:18as you said
33:19Mark
33:19it's been a
33:19real change
33:21of form
33:21for this
33:22team
33:22they have
33:22struggled
33:24in a lot
33:24of ways
33:24since stepping
33:25up to
33:25level 1
33:26status
33:27if you will
33:27a former
33:28winner
33:28at the
33:29Independence
33:29Cup
33:29in Super
33:30Touring
33:30driving a
33:30BMW
33:31and last
33:32year
33:32the
33:33privateer's
33:33champion
33:34in
33:34V8
33:34as McLean
33:35goes up
33:35and over
33:35this is a
33:36big spin
33:37here from
33:37McLean
33:37that's at
33:38Queen Victoria
33:39place
33:39right in
33:39between
33:40the two
33:40parliament
33:41houses
33:41he clips
33:42the wall
33:42and that
33:43has put
33:43pay to
33:44McLean's
33:44flying lap
33:45well
33:47you know
33:48I reckon
33:48his pulse
33:49rate was up
33:50when he
33:50started this
33:51lap
33:51he just
33:51would have
33:51doubled
33:52the bed
33:52that was
33:53at home
33:54just an
33:54idea of
33:55how you
33:55cannot afford
33:56to make
33:57a mistake
33:57around the
33:58streets of
33:58Canberra
33:58it's as
33:59simple as
33:59that
33:59it does
33:59show you
34:00Greg
34:00that's
34:001.3
34:01tonnes
34:02of V8
34:03supercar
34:03when that
34:04thing gets
34:04out of
34:04shape
34:04it's very
34:05very hard
34:06to get
34:06it back
34:06and it
34:06just shows
34:07what a fine
34:07line these
34:08guys are
34:08riding doing
34:08these hot
34:09laps
34:09it just
34:10shows how
34:10easy it
34:11is to
34:11just make
34:11one mistake
34:12and how
34:13quickly that
34:13thing can
34:13get away
34:14from you
34:14that is
34:15rotten
34:15luck
34:15because
34:15in that
34:16split
34:16qualifying
34:17session
34:17yesterday
34:18they
34:18split it
34:19into
34:19two
34:19halves
34:20Canberra
34:20was running
34:21in the
34:21second
34:21half
34:22and he
34:22jumped
34:22up to
34:238th
34:24fastest
34:24time
34:24and things
34:25were
34:25certainly
34:26looking good
34:27that is
34:27going to be
34:27a very
34:29costly
34:29outcome
34:30if you
34:30like
34:30he'll be
34:31enormously
34:31disappointed
34:32this was a
34:32big opportunity
34:33for him
34:33he's
34:33loving this
34:34place
34:35really relishing
34:35the challenge
34:36the streets
34:37of Canberra
34:38let's have a
34:38look at that
34:38on the replay
34:39look he just
34:40like he comes in
34:41there way too
34:42hot he's got
34:42brakes locked up
34:44and as he hits
34:45the grass
34:46the car
34:46breaks away
34:46from him
34:47and he did
34:48a very
34:48very good
34:49job managing
34:49to keep
34:50that thing
34:50off the
34:50concrete
34:50what a
34:51wild ride
34:52to the
34:52left is
34:53the old
34:53parliament
34:53house
34:53right there
34:54just where
34:55Cameron
34:55right near
34:56where Cameron
34:56clips the
34:57wall
34:57and to
34:57the right
34:58is the
34:59new
34:59parliament
34:59house
35:00well
35:00under this
35:01format
35:02the worst
35:02he's going
35:02to go
35:03is 15th
35:04he won't
35:04start any
35:05lower than
35:0515th
35:06because he's
35:06made it
35:06into this
35:06top 15
35:07shootout
35:07but he
35:08would have
35:08been much
35:10happier
35:10starting right
35:11up the
35:11order
35:11we thought
35:12it might
35:12have been
35:12a 157
35:1335
35:13so Cameron
35:15McLean
35:15will most
35:16likely start
35:16for 15th
35:18running those
35:21special wheel
35:22covers on
35:22the wheel
35:23and the
35:23idea of
35:24that being
35:24to trap
35:25that brake
35:25heat inside
35:26the rim
35:26and warm
35:26the tyres
35:27up
35:27so top
35:2810
35:28Garth
35:29Tander
35:29Glenn
35:30Seaton
35:31Larry
35:31Perkins
35:32will be
35:32back with
35:32more after
35:33this
35:33it is
35:40only
35:41millimetres
35:41here in
35:42Canberra
35:42between
35:43doom
35:44and
35:45absolute
35:46elation
35:46big
35:47big
35:48lose
35:48for
35:49Cameron
35:49McLean
35:50but fortunately
35:50he will
35:51still be
35:51in the
35:51top 15
35:52albeit
35:52at the
35:53bottom
35:53don't
35:53forget
35:53Greg Ruston
35:54Greg Murphy
35:55the chat
35:55room
35:56right after
35:57this
35:57telecast
35:57today
35:58on your
35:59home of
35:59motorsport
36:00still
36:00wonderful
36:01weather
36:01and
36:02extreme
36:02action
36:03here in
36:03Canberra
36:04as we
36:04get set
36:04Todd Kelly
36:05refreshing
36:05to see
36:06him not
36:06only in
36:06the top
36:0715
36:07but in
36:07fact
36:08in the
36:08top
36:0910
36:09interesting
36:10point that
36:10you made
36:11there
36:11Billy
36:11this is
36:11in fact
36:12the first
36:12time that
36:13the 20
36:13year old
36:13from Melbourne
36:14has ever
36:15contested a
36:16shootout
36:16in the
36:17Shell
36:17Championship
36:17Series
36:18so great
36:18to see
36:19him
36:19in the
36:20my car
36:20holding
36:21young
36:21lines
36:21entry
36:22being
36:22right up
36:23there
36:23did
36:23exceptionally
36:23well
36:24during
36:24the course
36:24of
36:25yesterday's
36:26qualifying
36:26session
36:27finished
36:28in sixth
36:28place
36:29in fact
36:29so what
36:29can he
36:30do
36:30today
36:30car
36:31looks
36:31very
36:32very
36:32tidy
36:32on the
36:32road
36:32mark
36:33yeah
36:33he's
36:33a guy
36:33who's
36:34really
36:34on an
36:34upward
36:35spiral

36:41but Todd
36:43Kelly
36:43has been
36:43most
36:44impressive
36:45he really
36:46loves
36:46this
36:46place
36:46he talked
36:47to some
36:47of these
36:47drivers
36:48oh
36:48I'm a bit
36:48tired
36:49or
36:49some might
36:50have a few
36:50complaints
36:50about it
36:51he just
36:51loves this
36:51he said
36:52it is
36:52fantastic
36:53fun
36:53and I tell you
36:54the Holton
36:54Racing team
36:55did something
36:55very interesting
36:56a while ago
36:57during testing
36:58at Winton
36:58Todd was really
37:00struggling getting
37:00the most out
37:01of the car
37:02so they decided
37:02to put a
37:02passenger seat
37:03in
37:03and he did
37:04some laps
37:04alongside
37:05Markscape
37:05and Craig
37:06Lowndes
37:06he said
37:06he learned
37:07more in
37:07that day
37:07than he has
37:08done in
37:11he found
37:11a second
37:12or a second
37:12and a half
37:12just in himself
37:13and he really
37:14has found
37:14now that
37:15being able
37:15to ride
37:16in the car
37:16to feel
37:17what it's
37:17like to drive
37:17one of these
37:18cars
37:18on the limit
37:18has completely
37:19changed his
37:20driving style
37:20and obviously
37:21that's improved
37:22his performances
37:22struggled at
37:24the Adelaide
37:24500 with
37:25a wrist injury
37:26but is now
37:27back to full
37:27fitness
37:28finished second
37:29in the Formula
37:29Holden
37:30Championship
37:30in 1998
37:31and a wonderful
37:33concept
37:34the Holden
37:34Young Lions
37:35giving up
37:36and coming
37:37stars like
37:37Todd Kelly
37:38a go
37:38as he works
37:38down
37:39Flynn Drive
37:40good place
37:43I should say
37:43swings it
37:44right
37:44into the
37:45chicane
37:45all of them
37:45getting up
37:46on two wheels
37:46through there
37:47again though
37:48the 20 year old
37:49looks just so
37:50tidy
37:50you can see
37:50his time
37:51on the bottom
37:51of the screen
37:52will it be good
37:53enough to beat
37:54Garth Tander
37:55a 144.1
37:56is the benchmark
37:57Kelly
37:58flashes over the
37:59line
37:59it's not quick
38:00enough
38:00a 146
38:012.3
38:02and that leaves
38:03Todd Kelly
38:04in 8th position
38:05well
38:06it's a good
38:06tidy lap
38:07as I say
38:08it's a race
38:09of survival
38:09this weekend
38:10is to keep
38:10the car
38:10off the
38:11concrete
38:11walls
38:11is just
38:12about as
38:13important
38:13as a good
38:13grid
38:13position
38:14so Todd
38:15Kelly
38:16cools the
38:17car down
38:17and he may
38:20be a man
38:20to watch
38:20as these
38:21three races
38:22unfold
38:22just to give
38:23you an idea
38:23if you've just
38:24joined us
38:24we are going
38:25through the
38:25top 15

38:32only Larry
38:33Perkins
38:33Garth Tander
38:34and Glenn

38:4244 second
38:43bracket mark
38:44well everyone
38:44holds their
38:45breath
38:45when this man
38:46comes out
38:46for a hot
38:47lap
38:47I think he's a
38:49hot lap
38:49qualifying specialist
38:50Mark Scaife
38:5133 years of age
38:52the New South
38:54Welshman now
38:54based in
38:55Victoria

38:57an outstanding
38:57job with
38:58Holden Racing
38:58team
38:59he's putting
38:59together
38:59an unbelievably
39:01good season

39:24been so good
39:25this year
39:26at being
39:26on top
39:27of qualifying
39:27that left
39:28him fifth
39:28at the
39:29conclusion
39:29of things
39:30yesterday
39:30what can
39:31he do
39:31in terms

39:40magnificent
39:41part of the

39:55no worse
39:56than third
39:57at the

40:01really
40:02very very
40:03good

40:31championship
40:32starts
40:32he's taken
40:3318 pole
40:34positions
40:34will this
40:34be 19
40:35being a
40:37road course
40:37Canberra
40:38like so
40:39many street
40:39circuits
40:40is bumpy
40:40and a lot
40:42of the
40:42teams have
40:42had to
40:42work on
40:43getting a
40:44suspension
40:44set up
40:45that compromises
40:46those bumps
40:47and make
40:47sure they get
40:47maximum drive
40:48across them
40:49and a little
40:50bit softer
40:51most of them
40:51in the
40:51suspension
40:52settings
40:52you see him
40:52ride those
40:54curbs there
40:54now working
40:55towards the
40:56underpass
40:57if you like
40:57under Commonwealth
40:58Avenue
40:59this could be
40:59a quick time
41:00Mark
41:00you're spot
41:00on there
41:01he heads up
41:01towards the
41:02start finish
41:02line
41:02a 142
41:03so far
41:04over the
41:04line
41:05what is it
41:05a 144.84
41:07but not
41:08enough to
41:09beat Garth
41:09Tander
41:10for pole
41:10well
41:11isn't that
41:11a surprise
41:12Garth
41:13Tander
41:13he's on
41:14fire on
41:14the streets
41:14of Canberra
41:15a 144.11
41:17the fastest
41:17time so far
41:18that puts
41:19Skate third
41:19in the order
41:20and he was
41:21about seven
41:22tenths of a
41:22second slow
41:23in the
41:23Valvoline
41:23Cummins
41:24machine
41:24so
41:24so
41:24we see
41:26Garth
41:26Tander
41:27on
41:27pole
41:27well
41:27that's
41:28a good
41:28question
41:28and interestingly
41:29Skate's lap
41:30was a tenth of a
41:32second slower
41:32than his best
41:34yesterday
41:34so he failed to
41:35improve on it
41:35here is the Caltex
41:37Haviline
41:37Ford
41:38of Tony
41:38Longhurst
41:39such a stark
41:41contrast in the
41:41Stone Brothers
41:42Racing Falcons
41:43this weekend
41:43Craig Baird
41:45by comparison
41:45is well down
41:46the order
41:47but Tony
41:48yesterday
41:48at the conclusion
41:49of qualifying
41:49was fourth
41:52fastest
41:52well the most
41:54experienced
41:55driver in the
41:56field
41:56Tony Longhurst
41:57a veteran
41:58of 140
41:59Shell
42:00Championship
42:00starts
42:01he's a man
42:03with enormous
42:04experience
42:04former Bathurst
42:05winner in 1998
42:06with Thomas
42:06Mazira
42:07in a turbocharged
42:08Ford Sierra
42:09oh look at the way
42:10he turns it in there
42:10locks the brakes
42:11right on the limit
42:12of adhesion
42:13just gets off the
42:14pedal in time
42:14to get that car
42:15back on line
42:16Tony Longhurst
42:18really wringing
42:19the neck
42:19of the Caltex
42:20Haviline Ford
42:21both Ross
42:21and Jimmy Stone
42:22have commented
42:23on how they've
42:24had to almost
42:25I guess
42:26re-educate Tony
42:27he's been so used
42:28to driving
42:29with the seat
42:30of his pants
42:30now they're
42:30working very closely
42:31on helping him
42:32to analyse the
42:33data that they
42:34derive from these
42:34cars and
42:35turn his car
42:37into a better
42:38racing package
42:39and it is
42:39certainly paying
42:40dividends
42:40with every outing
42:41the car seems
42:42to get better
42:42and better
42:43Tony is more
42:43and more pumped
42:44up
42:44he's a real
42:46adrenaline junkie
42:47too Mark
42:47someone that's
42:47spent a lot of
42:48time in water
42:49skiing and done
42:50all kinds of
42:50things
42:51well I'll tell you
42:52the last time
42:52this man was
42:53on pole position
42:54was back in
42:551990
42:55can you believe
42:56it
42:56Barbagallo
42:57Raceway
42:58in WA
42:59it's been a
43:00long time
43:00between drinks
43:01for Longhurst
43:0178 rounds
43:02without a win
43:03his last victory
43:04in the Shell
43:05series was in
43:05a BMW
43:06back in 1992
43:08so it's been
43:10a long time
43:10off the podium
43:11for Tony Longhurst
43:12can he turn
43:12that form around
43:13this weekend
43:13the Caltex
43:14Haviline Ford
43:14looking strong
43:15as he thunders
43:16down there
43:1742 year old
43:18from the Gold
43:19Coast
43:20swings in
43:20through this
43:21chicane area
43:21here
43:21you can see
43:22a change in
43:23surface there
43:24as well
43:24a little bit
43:25of concrete
43:25and some
43:26tough tarmac
43:27he exits there
43:28and works
43:29towards the
43:30start finish line
43:30a quick dab
43:31of the brakes
43:31and then it's
43:32flat out
43:32a little bit
43:34sideways
43:35is the time
43:35quicker than
43:36Tanders
43:36no it's not
43:37a 146
43:38160
43:38two seconds
43:40slower
43:40yeah a little
43:40surprising
43:41I must say
43:41it did look
43:42tidy for a while
43:43there
43:43yeah it looked
43:43very tidy
43:44but looks
43:45can be
43:45deceptive
43:46quite often
43:47a car
43:47will go out
43:47there
43:47and look
43:48wild
43:48and spectacular
43:49and be slow
43:49other times
43:50look like
43:50he's on a
43:50warm-up lap
43:51and he goes
43:51and gets
43:51pole
43:52very very
43:52hard to
43:53pick around
43:53this circuit
43:53it's time
43:55for team
43:56Ford
43:56and a chance
43:57to win
43:57this
43:57and then

46:32you've got it
46:33all crossed
46:34up there
46:34coming into
46:34the chicane
46:35well
46:35maybe it's
46:36the problem
46:36here now
46:37the temperatures
46:38are so low
46:38track temperature
46:39particularly is
46:40low
46:40I've had a lot
46:41of teams

46:42getting those
46:42tyres up
46:43at the right
46:43temperature
46:43before they
46:44have to
46:44give it

47:01number of
47:02mechanical failures
47:04and critical times
47:05during races
47:06have really cost him
47:07a lot of points
47:08this is a very
47:09very crucial round
47:10for Craig Lowndes
47:11wondering if his car
47:13is perhaps set up
47:13a little differently
47:14Mark to Todd
47:15Kelly's and
47:16Mark Scaf's car
47:17it seems to be
47:17getting a lot
47:18more air
47:18and Craig is
47:19really muscling
47:21it across the
47:21kerbs
