00:04Five Derbyshire councils have confirmed their intention to begin a review of protected Green
00:09Belt areas amid criticism of the Government's new planning legislation from environmental
00:13groups.
00:15Authorities for Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Amber Valley, High Peak and Derby
00:20have each been awarded £70,000 in Government funding to undertake Green Belt reviews in
00:25respect of recent updates to the National Planning Policy Framework.
00:29Politicians in Westminster are looking to encourage housing and infrastructure development
00:34by lowering previous regulatory obstacles that could open up new areas of Derby countryside,
00:39but local councils maintain that any decisions are some way off.
00:43A spokesperson for Chesterfield Borough Council said,
00:46This funding will be used to assess land currently within the Green Belt and ensure it is meeting
00:50the functions set out in the National Planning Policy, whilst also trying to identify land
00:55which would meet the Government's new Grey Belt definition.
00:58The Green Belt in Chesterfield has not been fully reviewed for over 30 years, but the
01:03review does not necessarily mean that it will be altered.
