00:00 Here's today's Derbyshire Times video bulletin.
00:03 Opposition politicians have called for an urgent debate over cash-strapped Derbyshire County Council's projected £46 million budget deficit.
00:11 Labour councillors say they are concerned that the prospect of any debate with the Conservative-controlled local authority over its funding crisis could be as long as six weeks away.
00:20 Labour group leader Councillor Joan Dixon claims many councillors were shocked to learn of the council's finances by email, sent after council leader Barry Lewis chose not to report the budget deficit at the full council meeting on September 13, although it was formally announced at a cabinet meeting on September 21.
00:38 However, Councillor Lewis says that opposition leader groups were given comprehensive briefings on the day of the council meeting on September 13, and that they all had access to the relevant papers, comments and press releases from the administration.
00:51 The council has announced that it is to stop all non-essential spending and implement a hiring freeze due to the predicted overspend in its budget by £46 million next March.
01:01 Councillor Lewis told the cabinet meeting on September 21 that the council is working hard, looking at essential and non-essential services, and is hoping to lobby central government for support. It is also looking at staffing and overtime costs.
01:16 A family in North Wingfield has restored a First World War memorial plaque and displayed it on their front garden wall.
01:22 Gregory and Helen Lowe found the memorial plaque after moving into a new home, a converted Methodist chapel on Station Road.
01:29 The memorial has been displayed in the former Hepthorne Lane Methodist Church until the chapel's closure in 2004.
01:35 When the plaque was found it was dirty and much of the lettering had faded, so Helen took on the job of cleaning it up and reapplying the lettering by hand.
01:42 Next month, the family plan to lay a poppy wreath next to the plaque as a mark of respect for Remembrance Sunday and the names of the fallen.
