00:02 Planners have backed proposals for a new waterside commercial and retail centre near Chesterfield
00:08 as part of ongoing improvements to the area.
00:10 Chesterfield Borough Council's Planning Committee unanimously approved the Derbyshire
00:15 County Council application to build a mixed-use Staveley Town Centre Basin Centre with car parking,
00:20 landscaping and related works. A Borough Council spokesman said,
00:25 "The proposal is to develop a facility adjacent to the basin and it has the potential to attract
00:29 visitors who can use the canal corridor whether it be that on foot, cycle, horse or boat."
00:34 The 2.4 hectare site, which was a former coal working area, will be in the Staveley
00:39 Development Basin area between Ekington Road and Island Close, which is a hub along Chesterfield
00:45 Canal with a lock next to Staveley Town Centre. Construction of the canal basin with an access
00:50 road, slipway and canal lock was approved in 2010 and restoration of the canal from Ekington Road
00:55 to Haig Lane towards Renishaw was approved in 2021. This latest approval is for a two-storey,
01:02 855 square metre centre and is part of the Government-funded £25 million Staveley Town
01:07 Deal Regeneration Project. It will see the creation of office space, a workshop,
01:12 commercial units for small businesses, a restaurant and cafe.
01:15 Stagecoach has partnered with Chesterfield Foodbank to offer a free ticketing scheme,
01:22 making it easier for Foodbank users to access the service by bus. The scheme offers the Foodbank
01:28 voucher codes for a free Chesterfield Day Rider ticket on the Stagecoach app. The ticket gives
01:33 the user unlimited travel on the Stagecoach buses within Chesterfield for the day it's activated.
01:37 Jacqueline Deveur from Chesterfield Foodbank said "Huge thanks for Stagecoach for their
01:42 commitment to social justice and their support for our local community. Some of the people who
01:47 need to use the Foodbank struggle to afford public transport. The distance they need to travel on
01:51 foot can be preventative, especially when carrying heavy bags of tin food back home."
