00:00:29had with Russell Ingle. I'm really looking forward to this race. Yeah it was not a good qualifying run
00:00:35and even the grid girls don't want to walk down this far. I've got Johnny my number one on the
00:00:39umbrella so he's he's doing two jobs today but no it's just it's yeah the way the the silicon is on
00:00:45the track it probably doesn't look like it at home on on tv but online there's so much grip but then
00:00:51slightly off it's just horrible and yeah I made a mistake I tried to drive like normal and yeah made
00:00:56a mistake and your p24 and then in the next one you get it slightly right your p6 so um yeah see
00:01:02what happens here but Russell reckons he's got heaps of front bars and he's going to push everyone
00:01:05out of the way so um yeah see if he enforces or not not just following through. Can't wait for a good

00:01:17this black stuff on here I can tell you that is stick look at that I can actually pull that now
00:01:21that's out and around the track we'll have a bit of a more of a look at it later here Volvo S60
00:01:25beautiful race car as a result of that grip that Mark Whittlebottom's talking about everyone's had
00:01:30to modify their cars for this race I think it's going to be very very interesting so you can see
00:01:34already at the front of the car that is as you've seen me do before I can usually get my foot under
00:01:39there that's very low that's a sign that they're running the car stiff so if I push down on the oh put a
00:01:44dint in there I best push there look at that that's not like your road car you won't push that that
00:01:49might have I don't know a 900 000 pound spring in maybe five times as stiff as your road car the
00:01:54other thing Pete if you just go down low they've done look at that that's what we call camber look
00:01:57at the angle of that wheel on there because there's more grip in the road remember the tyre's going to
00:02:02grip more that's going to flex under so a little bit more camber on the front a little bit more camber
00:02:07on the rear and if we come around the rear of the car you can see their rear wing in under here
00:02:12adjustable and that's on full or maximum wing what we call maximum wing maximum downforce now I'll grab a
00:02:19quick chat with Scotty McLaughlin mate it is the big talking issue of the day is the massive grip
00:02:24that's come out on this circuit's caught everyone out you're back in 12th didn't read it properly in
00:02:28the first qualifying session oh I made a stuff up I think we should have been a little bit further
00:02:32up maybe not pole but um definitely it's uh it's gripped up a lot it's awesome compared to say you
00:02:36know how it used to be at winter you know what it's like so uh yeah it's great all right mate good

00:03:02in the track and adjusting to the how much grip was out there well yeah obviously the track's
00:03:06something like we've never seen before but you know if you try and attack it like you normally do
00:03:10you just lock fronts because you know there's way too much grip out there so you almost have to
00:03:14drive it at like 85 percent to get the time out of it it's kind of a really strange feeling but
00:03:18like if I said if I told you I was going to do a 20.1 I said I'll be on pole by like two and a half
00:03:23seconds but um 18th or something what are you gonna do to get to the front I don't know I you tell me
00:03:29you've been doing this longer than me we'll have a chat off here
00:03:32Davey Reynolds he's had an interesting afternoon like the rest of them it's extraordinary scapey just
00:03:39how how big a question mark this track has posed I mean you've got guys like Jamie Winkup mid-pack
00:03:46we've got um especially for race eight both of the Red Bull guys down there and they just walked out
00:03:51after the qualifying sessions with their hands in the air well you know straight away from that
00:03:55response from Dave they've got no clue that you can go from the front of the field to the back
00:03:59Winterbottom as we saw there before is way back 23rd and he's up at the front for the next one
00:04:05and fourth and fifth yeah I happen to be standing in the garage when that happened boys and I can
00:04:09tell you they were scratching their heads they genuinely didn't have the answers now I came down
00:04:12here to talk to Garth Tander he's not here but something I've just noticed my feet literally are
00:04:17sticking to the road I kid you not but look at this right in front of Garth's car here on the line
00:04:23that he's going to take off look at that I've just picked up here look at this there's a great
00:04:25line of this sticky tarry stuff so the guys on the grid and if I look around not everybody is the
00:04:30same there is definitely going to be some guys that are going to get a absolute dead set advantage
00:04:35out of this very clever Lee Holdsworth qualifying for you has been quite good this year you've had
00:04:40five out of eight in the top 10 for qualifying and you're in 13th for this one yeah it's pretty cool
00:04:45I mean uh back in 2012 I probably wasn't even qualifying as well as this so and we've just got so much
00:04:51more potential so uh it's looking good for the year ahead we've got upgrades coming everything
00:04:55to look forward to so um it's not a bad spot 13th but the next one's fourth so uh we'll do the best
00:05:01we can in this one and then try and get a uh maybe Erebus's first podium in the next one let's see

00:07:15everyone's talking about.
00:07:16How are you going to affect overtaking successfully offline?
00:07:19Yeah, that's the interesting thing.
00:07:20There's so much grip out there, it's quite incredible.
00:07:22Really enjoyable to drive a car like that
00:07:24because you can come out of the corner and just stand on the throttle,
00:07:26but it's very slippery offline.
00:07:28So the first lap, if you end up getting put on the outside at three and four
00:07:31and some of the tight sections there,
00:07:33I think it'll be quite tough and you'll drop back a fair bit.
00:07:35So it's going to be quite interesting, I think.
00:07:37The other one, if I can get your professional read on it,
00:07:38we often babble along about tyre degradation, wearing your tyres out.
00:07:42With the grip level so high,
00:07:43do you have any knowledge on tyre degradation or what to expect now?
00:07:46Well, I actually did a fair few laps in a row in practice one there
00:07:49and what I felt, don't tell the other guys,
00:07:51is that it fell away pretty quick.
00:07:53And the thing with the grip is it's super grippy,
00:07:55but when it does let go, it goes really, really skaty.
00:07:58It doesn't drop off a little bit with a bit of understeer or oversteer.
00:08:00It falls away very, very quickly.
00:08:03So I think it's going to be very interesting.
00:08:04You've got a lot of fast guys towards the back of the field
00:08:07that are going to try and charge through
00:08:08and some guys up the front that aren't probably as used to it as others.
00:08:11So it's going to be really interesting two races.
00:08:13I guarantee none, I'm watching the telecast right now, mate,

00:08:22that victorious win with Nissan
00:08:24and starting from a good position for this one.
00:08:26Yeah, that's right.
00:08:27Obviously, a lot different track conditions
00:08:30to what we had this time of year ago at winter.
00:08:32It's just crazy, the grip that we've got
00:08:33and the same with the times, it's just incredible.
00:08:36So I saw a 20.4 on my dash for this qualifying session,
00:08:40thought, oh, that's going to be pretty good.
00:08:41We're fifth, so still, it's not too bad,
00:08:44but it'll be interesting to see how the tyres hang on in the race now.
00:08:48So 34 laps, still a long way around here for one set of tyres.
00:08:52That is the discussion at the moment,
00:08:54how much the tyres are going to degrade because of these surfaces.
00:08:56There's so many unknown factors.
00:08:58Yeah, you're absolutely right.
00:08:59So it's going to be very interesting.
00:09:02Hopefully we can get through the first couple of laps nice and clean
00:09:05and in good position and fight on from there.
00:09:07So I sort of feel like if the track does get a bit greasy,

00:10:14So the start's going to be important and we'll just see what happens.

00:10:45Well, today, obviously, this race is our most important one to get right because, obviously, you're right.

00:10:54We've got to get away to a good start, see where these two guys end up and then see what we can do.
00:10:58Must be a bit of a shock, though, to go from here down the back.

00:12:06trying to find how much braking you should put into it.
00:12:08You know, you guys have done a really good job at BJR.
00:12:11Yeah, I mean, you know, it's been a good track for us.
00:12:14And, you know, the grip that the track's got certainly doesn't seem to affect us
00:12:19as much as what, you know, it seemed to have affected others.
00:12:21So, you know, good effort by BJR.
00:12:23Hopefully we can, you know, get a couple of cars on the podium here.

00:12:57This is the bitumen filler that's been applied to the cracks in the road.
00:13:02And in front of Van Gisberg and Fabian,
00:13:04there's actually quite a big difference to the amount of,
00:13:09the guy's calling it goo,
00:13:11the amount of this grippy surface.
00:13:13And this will be one of the biggest differences
00:13:16when they do drop the clutch and get away
00:13:18because it'll be their initial drive and the initial grip
00:13:21will be profoundly different from one side to the other.
00:13:24I've never seen drivers so excited but so nervous at the same time
00:13:28because it's millimetres the difference
00:13:30between getting on that good stuff and going off the track.
00:13:33So third event of the season, as I mentioned,
00:13:35back-to-back super sprint rounds after being in Tassie last week.
00:13:38This is the home of 18 out of the 25 cars who come here and test.
00:13:43So they know it like the back of their hands.
00:13:44We break it down to 12 turns and it's quite a wild ride.
00:13:48High speed as well.
00:13:49Mark Winterbottom has had a bad qualifying run
00:13:52after posting four pole positions in his career here.
00:13:55He'll want to make a big move.
00:13:57Now's the time for Ford Performance Racing to step up.
00:14:01This is always the most anxious part of the race for me.
00:14:03I'm sure it's the same for most of these guys out here.
00:14:05The heart rate's starting to go now.
00:14:07Making sure you get one of these cars off the line is just critical.
00:14:11The result, at the end of the day,
00:14:13a lot of the time it's determined by how good you get that clutch
00:14:16and that throttle application and the combination just right.
00:14:19I'm going to be watching Shane Van Gisberg
00:14:20and he's got a couple of tram tracks away from the start there.
00:14:23It's going to be interesting to see if he can get down there before Fabian
00:14:25but it's going to be a drag race.

00:14:42and from the pole, back-to-back poles for him today.
00:14:45Fabian Coulthard, fellow Kiwi, Shane Van Gisbergen alongside.
00:14:48Then Dale Wood, career best performance,

00:14:52With the all-time hero of the business, Craig Lowndes alongside.
00:14:55Then it's James Moffat, winner here in 2013.
00:14:58Jason Bright's been a winner here as well.
00:15:00Rick Kelly for Nissan.
00:15:01He'll do well together with Nick Perkat,
00:15:03who snuck into the top ten late in that session.
00:15:06Chas Mostert, great performance inside the top ten for Pepsi Max Ford
00:15:09and alongside him in car number two will be Garth Tander.
00:15:13Michael Caruso and Scotty McLaughlin locking out positions 11 and 12.
00:15:17Look at that, Jamie Winker, second in the championship, 14th on the grid.
00:15:22Tim Slade for Supercheap Auto Racing has Scotty Pye next to him.
00:15:26James Courtney, success here in the final race last year.
00:15:31He's starting down the back as well.
00:15:32So all of these guys face a monumental task
00:15:36because we know that the track surface has a lot of grip in it.
00:15:40The problem is the grip isn't where you need it to be
00:15:43when you've got to make a move and take over.
00:15:45Mark Winterbottom, that's a big one.
00:15:47Starting from position 23, Robert Dahlgren was penalised a few spots
00:15:51while starting at the back of the grid
00:15:52for touching the car in Park Thurman after qualifying.
00:15:56There's a couple of things to pay particular attention to here.
00:15:59The run from the starting line to turn one narrows on the left side of the road
00:16:03by at least one car width.
00:16:06Year after year, people make the mistake of thinking,
00:16:08wow, the world's opened up for me here.
00:16:10I'll sneak down the inside and get a birthday, grab a couple of spots cheap.
00:16:13It never works out.
00:16:14It always ends up in a disaster.
00:16:16The other spot where you can echo those remarks
00:16:19is up in the area between turns six and seven.
00:16:21People dive into the hole there and the hole doesn't exist.
00:16:25They end up making contact
00:16:26and we've seen a lot of trouble over there on lap one.
00:16:30In fact, if you look at safety car analysis, Scaifey,
00:16:32the first couple of laps are typically where the high risk is here.
00:16:36Absolutely, Neil.
00:16:36And what will happen, and all the drivers have commented so far,
00:16:39we're on board a huge amount of cars throughout today's coverage.
00:16:43Will Davison in the Erebus Mercedes E63.
00:16:47But when you get offline to this dark section of road where the grip is,
00:16:51is fantastic.
00:16:52They all say, how good is that?
00:16:53But when you get off it and you get outside those tram tracks,
00:16:56you will go off the road.
00:16:58That will cause the safety car.
00:17:00Most wins at this circuit, John Bowne, Glenn Seaton, five victories
00:17:03since all the way back in 1985
00:17:06when the Australian Touring Car Championship first started racing here.
00:17:09But the current drivers in this crop,
00:17:11Russell Ingle, Garth Tander, Jason Bright, Jamie Winkup and Craig Lowndes,
00:17:16have all found the chequered flag four times.
00:17:19It's a couple of Kiwis at the front.
00:17:22So which manufacturer will take out the first race of the day?
00:17:26Getting tighter and tighter.
00:17:28Remember, Nissan had victory here last year.
00:17:30In fact, so too did Ford and Holt.

00:17:33It's a lottery.
00:17:36Fabian Coulthard to start from pole position.
00:17:40The Giz is next to him.
00:17:42Dale Wood and Craig Lowndes behind them.
00:17:45This circuit is like chewing gum.
00:17:47Who can find the sticky stuff and make it count?
00:17:49Look at Lowndes go.
00:17:50Threads the needle.
00:17:53He'll get up into second, but then three wide behind him.
00:17:56Fabian Coulthard gets through.
00:17:58Van Gisberg and gets it back on Lowndes.
00:18:00Up over the rise towards turn three.
00:18:05Pretty clean start.
00:18:06Now they start jostling.
00:18:08And around turn four.
00:18:10Looks like Nick Perkett lost a bit of ground in the opening couple of corners there.
00:18:14And look at Slade on the outside here getting muscled at turn four.
00:18:19The sweeper, turn five, fastest corner in the track.
00:18:23Right in the middle of the complex.
00:18:24And a problem for Robert Dalger.
00:18:25And they've had to bring that car back to the lane.
00:18:27And we'll get a report on that for you when things settle down.
00:18:31So Robert Dalger can't get a gear in that car.
00:18:34Van Gisberg and almost stalled at the start with that grippy surface in front of him.
00:18:37He actually hit it with a clutch.
00:18:39And it almost stalled.
00:18:40That's why he's back where he is.
00:18:42This is pretty lively.
00:18:43Courtney with Scott Pye right in front right there.
00:18:46Tim Slade being really aggressive too.
00:18:52As he tries to hold the position.
00:18:53There's Chas Mostyn.
00:18:56Phil Key's already been on the radio to Fabian Coulthard, the race leader in the Lockwood entry here at turn 11.
00:19:01And said you've got a good margin.
00:19:03Just get into your rhythm.
00:19:04That's a key message.
00:19:10Look after the Dunlop tyres.
00:19:12Look at the gap first to second.
00:19:14It's nearly one second between Coulthard and Van Gisberg.
00:19:17And it's a ripper start for Fabian.
00:19:20It was a great start too from Lowndes.
00:19:22But Van Gisberg was up to the occasion by the time they got to turn two.
00:19:29A little bit of all single file.
00:19:30Well, there's no real point, is there, looking around at the moment?
00:19:33Because you've got to stay on the fast line, on the railway tracks.
00:19:37And what will happen, Matt, is two schools of thought here.
00:19:39When you're on the dark section of road where the high grip level is, the tyres have more grip.
00:19:44So you have to use that grip level and make sure you don't exceed it.
00:19:48Don't go outside that tram track area.
00:19:51But if it is faster and it uses the tyre harder, it will knock the tyres around.
00:19:57You see Courtney down the inside of Pye.
00:19:58They're having a pretty healthy battle in the first couple of laps.
00:20:01So this one school of thought is there's less wheel spin.
00:20:04The tyres will hang in better.
00:20:06On the other hand, you're going faster.
00:20:08You're loading them more.
00:20:09You create more heat.
00:20:10And they'll hurt the tyre worse.
00:20:12So we'll have to really watch this.
00:20:14Because as this race unfolds, some cars will suit that.
00:20:18Other cars won't.
00:20:19Fabian Coulthard at the moment.

00:21:07The other point of significance here is that the threat of the Pedder's safety car intervening
00:21:12in the first couple of laps didn't materialise.

00:22:27He's 15th behind Lee Holdsworth, who also had a very strong day yesterday, but couldn't convert in qualifying in that frantic 10 minute or early.
00:22:35It's almost a question of how low can they go time-wise.
00:22:38And it's interesting that the three guys who have now posted 122.7s are trailing each other.
00:22:44Reynolds, Slade and Courtney.
00:22:47And what's interesting too, Matt, is that because they're all staying on this dark, what is the groove line that has the high grip,
00:22:54in the early part of the race, you've got no choice.
00:22:56So they're all there.
00:22:57So we're on board with Reynolds and we see there that everyone's on the same line.
00:23:01No one's game to go out.
00:23:03But when the tyres start to go away, there will be disparity in performance.
00:23:07But you have to go past people.
00:23:09So that's when you'll see some mistakes and some drama.

01:11:37all agree and I think he
01:11:38does too that he did the
01:11:39wrong thing and he
01:11:40deserved to be penalised
01:11:41for it the question is
01:11:42did the penalty fit the
01:11:43crime I personally would
01:11:45rather have seen a post
01:11:46race and see him get to
01:11:47the end
01:11:48I agree and that's
01:11:49that's always one that
01:11:50the sport has a problem
01:11:52with in terms of how
01:11:53you actually assess
01:11:54those Matt the reality
01:11:55is he did do the wrong
01:11:56thing he should have
01:11:57been more patient and
01:11:58he would have still
01:11:58finished on the podium
01:11:59that's actually the
01:12:00racing perspective the
01:12:02second part of that is
01:12:03that you do need to
01:12:05consider what the
01:12:05overall entertainment is

01:12:07fit the crime I would

01:14:20happened at turn one two
01:14:22and also at six seven
01:14:23actually for me is a bigger
01:14:25deal than what happened
01:14:26with Russell a little bit
01:14:27later in the race because
01:14:28for me that's all madness
01:14:29none of that stuff really
01:14:30needed to happen and it
01:14:32just turned into a smash

01:14:36was almost stopped by the
01:14:38time he actually made
01:14:39contact so Russell went down
01:14:40there but he was almost
01:14:41stopped you see all these
01:14:42guys there I think one of

01:14:49at turn one were way more
01:14:51severe because it's faster
