00:00Hometown hero Scott the real Harrison will make his first defense of the WBO
00:04featherweight championship against the pocket rocket former WBC bantamweight
00:08titleist Wayne McCullough and in our co-feature another local favorite the
00:13undefeated and very promising amazing Alex Arthur will square off with South
00:17Africa's Patrick Malinga for a vacant marginal junior lightweight crown we
00:24bring you indoors to Brayhead Arena on the outskirts of Glasgow Scotland a
00:27sellout crowd of about six thousand expected an eager anticipation of
00:31tonight's marquee matchup favorite son Scott Harrison in the spotlight and he
00:36wants to put on a good show in his own backyard high expectations here for an
00:40all-action showdown with battling Irishman Wayne McCullough it's fight night in
00:46Glasgow and we take a look at former Bantamweight title holder Wayne McCullough's
00:51arrival at Brayhead earlier tonight with his wife Cheryl and daughter Winona it's
00:56been six years since the pocket rocket has reigned as a world champion and at
01:00age 32 he knows this could very well be his last chance at glory for McCullough the
01:06time is now and the place is here and this was the arrival of the champion
01:13popular homegrown product Scott Harrison who figures to benefit from a raucous and
01:17partisan crowd tonight the featherweight division is loaded at the top and if
01:22Harrison can convincingly defeat McCullough he'll take a big step toward
01:26proving he belongs with the very best
01:32hello again everybody Steve Albert ringside from Glasgow Scotland before we
01:35get started this evening let's take a moment to mention the the men and women
01:39of the coalition forces in the Middle East our thoughts and prayers are with
01:43them and their families as for boxing we have a continuing theme going as we come
01:48to you from the United Kingdom for two straight broadcasts in both shows you'll
01:52see beloved young hometown champions taking on vastly experienced former
01:57champions tonight former world champion and battle tested Wayne McCullough who's
02:01fought the best in his weight classes hoping to go out with a bang facing a
02:05relatively unknown champion trying to get on the worldwide map in our first look at
02:09Scott Harrison here on Showtime championship boxing and then in two weeks
02:13another ex-title holder grizzled veteran Vince Phillips will meet the up-and-coming Ricky Hatton
02:18who receives the rock star treatment in his native Manchester England so aside
02:22from boxing on the American scene we bring you some international flavor as well and with
02:27that let me bring on my ringside partner Showtime boxing analyst Steve Farhood and Steve how
02:32would you compare and contrast the backgrounds of Scott Harrison and Wayne McCullough Steve some of
02:37the contrasts make this a very intriguing matchup by themselves for instance McCullough the Irishman
02:42from Belfast and Harrison the Glaswegian who hopes to be known as a great Scott McCullough former world
02:49champion 32 years old he's fought everybody Harrison 25 years old just recently won a slice of the
02:55featherweight title he hopes to fight everybody but I think what makes this such a good matchup is
03:00timing because Wayne McCullough has a way in all of his big fights of making the battle as much about
03:06will as skill and at this point in Harrison's career he not only needs a test like that
03:12but craves one so we know all about Wayne McCullough tonight we're going to learn about Scott Harrison
03:17sounds like the Glaswegians favor your answer cheering in the background for Steve whether
03:21it's hype or reality there's a perception of bad blood between the two fight camps particularly
03:26the managers Frank Maloney who handles Scott Harrison and Cheryl McCullough also Wayne's wife
03:31have sparred verbally throughout the build-up with disparaging remarks our UK correspondent and British
03:36boxing columnist Colin Hart has more thanks Steve if a Scotsman and an Irishman had a fight in a Glasgow
03:45pub on a Saturday night they will clear the bar in seconds the same scenario is going to apply when
03:52Harrison and McCullough get in the ring tonight both fighters have great respect for each other although
03:58there's no love lost between them the same can't be said of the two camps Cheryl McCullough who is Wayne's wife as
04:06well as his manager looks like a demure young lady but in actual fact she is fiercely protected of her
04:12husband and has a waspish turn of phrase she has angered Frank Maloney who's Harrison's manager all week by
04:19suggesting that Harrison is nothing more than a third-rate champion Maloney for his part has upset Cheryl because he
04:27ridiculed her for taking McCullough on the pads in the gym he said if McCullough could punch he would
04:34break her arms so the stage is set for what should be a thrilling fight back to you now Steve all right
04:43Colin Frank Maloney a puckish character who once considered running for mayor of London behind most
04:48of the mischief allegedly fueling the spat in an effort to promote more interest in the fight it is
04:55night time here in the working-class town of Glasgow Scotland population approximately 1 million people
05:01glad to have you with us for tonight's transatlantic telecast in co-production with our good friends
05:06at B Sky B TV our thanks for their cooperation and assistance let's get to it we close in on our
05:15first bout as unbeaten British super featherweight champion Alex author a local product meets Patrick
05:21Malenga for a vacant fringe 130 pound title and a look at Patrick Malenga with his first fight away from his
05:31native South Africa one of four boxing brothers his cousin former super middleweight champ sugar boy Malenga
05:41following in the footsteps of his father and trainer jabalati 13 3 and 2 with 11 knockouts all three
05:48losses by TKO once considered a prospect Steve unbeaten his first 10 but unsuccessful when he stepped up took
05:56this on just two weeks notice is he a suitable opponent well he's a substitute and as is often the case
06:02with substitutes I doubt he's going to go the distance he uh he doesn't seem durable and against a puncher
06:08like Arthur that could be a problem could be a tough night for Malenga now to bring in the crowd
06:15favorite Alex author to ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr ladies and gentlemen we are ready for the first of
06:23our championship attractions of the evening and now making his way to the ring please welcome
06:30the British champion from Edinburgh Scotland Alex Arthur
06:35amazing Alex Arthur from Edinburgh British and Commonwealth 130 pound champion although those titles not at stake
06:48tonight very engaging friendly young man you see him saluting the crowd
06:5599 amateur wins 14 and 0 with 12 knockouts as a pro rated number six by the WBO which may be a a generous rating
07:06this is one hot commodity here in the United Kingdom Steve some here actually liken him to
07:12a future Ken Buchanan one of the great Scottish champions and his friend and idol that is high
07:20praise Ken Buchanan if he has a tough look on his face it's because he still feels the effects of that
07:26punch Duran hit him below the belt with but Arthur just a prospect let's not get carried away with the
07:31comparisons lightweight champ from 1970 representing Scotland Ken Buchanan and this man Alex Arthur hoping
07:39to be a future world champion as we check the numbers Arthur a year younger at 24 the height identical
07:45two inch reach advantage for Malenga yesterday's weigh-in both came in just under the 130 pound limit
07:51and a look at the key rules now there is no standing eight count the three knockdown rule is in effect
07:57a fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round if an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of
08:02the fourth it's a technical draw if it happens after the end of four they go to the scorecards
08:08so here at braehen arena in Glasgow Scotland we're getting ready for Alex Arthur versus Patrick Malenga
08:14it's scheduled for 12 rounds this the first of two fights here tonight with the big main event between

10:14and his opponent across serving on my right fighting out of the blue corner this 12 round

10:28his way ladies and gentlemen nine stone three and three quarter pounds 129 and three quarter u.s
10:35pounds he is the former commonwealth gold medalist undefeated in his campaign of the ring as a
10:41professional professional with 14 wins no losses 12 big wins coming by way out knockout rate number six
10:50in the world by the wbo as a junior lightweight contender please welcome the british champion
10:57the undefeated amazing alex arthur
11:03once again paul thomas is our referee in charge 12 rounds of boxing scheduled
11:15so you're both in the dressing room you know what i expect of you just repeat myself just once keep
11:20your shots on the target area nothing around the back nothing in the kidney area give me a good clean
11:24contest the best of luck to both of you well done final instructions from the third man paul thomas
11:31amazing alex arthur while many in these parts feel he's destined for stardom he's still a work in
11:37progress patrick malinga from a strong family boxing background not sure he's quite in the same league
11:43as arthur skill-wise and punching-wise round one scheduled for 12. arthur in the white trunks with the
11:50gold trim malinga in the very short short black trunks with the gold trim sort of a a throwback to the
11:56to the old days of the 60s and 70s
12:01arthur seems very proficient i know you saw him on showbox the new generation very proficient
12:06offensively but a bit too reckless perhaps defensively yeah you just saw him get hit
12:11with the right hand on cue steve he's listening to you okay no he's a real good offensive fighter
12:15with a big left hook and malinga told us he would move for at least a couple of rounds to try to get
12:20into the fight and take away that body punching of arthur arthur calls himself a boxer by nature
12:28he goes to the peter harrison gym as he pushes malinga back harrison the father of main event
12:34fighter scott harrison he travels a hundred miles a day to train from edinburgh to glasgow he said at
12:42that gym they encourage aggressive so that's why he has to become more of a puncher as well as a boxer
12:48he's never been down as a pro or amateur 112 amateur fights or so 100 to 112 and 14 profile
13:00so far steve arthur landing the right hand i want to see what happens when he lands the left hook
13:04that's his big punching i have to think malinga's a little bit nervous it's his first fight outside of
13:08his homeland member of the zulu tribe from jahannesburg south africa yeah that signature
13:15punch the left hook you alluded to he patterns after the legendary julio cesar chavez he told us
13:22but he does have a tendency to stick his jaw out too frequently which of course would be an inviting
13:27target for anyone he has been fortunate thus far given the level of opposition which is why it's kind
13:34of difficult to believe he's number six in the eyes of the wbo that rating is absurd alice arthur is a
13:40prospect i don't care if he's already a 12-iron fighter yeah he's only had 14 pro fights
13:48and he really hasn't had anybody notable on his ring record
13:53the most notable on the ring record of malinga i mentioned he's a member of the zulu tribe was
13:59matthew zulu but he lost he got overwhelmed in that fight en route to a ninth round tko loss
14:04we approach the final 30 seconds of round one it's scheduled for 12 for something called the wba
14:13international 130 pound championship
14:22arthur not really turning the heat up yet he's kind of checking his guy out
14:28only getting hit in counter situations when he's concentrates on defense he doesn't get hit
14:33malinga a little off balance overhand right
14:38by author but it didn't phase the man from south africa round one of the books
14:47we're set for keys to victory from our steve farhood steve this is what alex arthur needs
14:53aim to the body arthur's hook his best punch it's what distinguishes him establishes edge in power
14:59if arthur gets off early he'll take the fight right out of malinga and don't ignore defense
15:05arthur has to remember to move his head after he punches and for patrick malinga counter don't lead
15:12malinga has to hope arthur is sloppy in his attack shoot the straight right simply put that is malinga's
15:18only chance and stay off the ropes malinga is square he will take a beating
15:39alex arthur fighting pro since november 2000
15:42and started boxing when he was 10. always looked up to local legend ken buchanan as we mentioned
15:48the former lightweight champion alex's father didn't allow him to fight but he went to prison
15:54for a while it was then when his dad was away that young alex took up the sport
16:00at 18 won the silver medal at the european games that was the start of his success
16:06the high point was the gold medal at the commonwealth games in 1998 in malaysia
16:11arthur wearing the white trunks with the gold trim and hearing the singing and chanting from his
16:16supporters here on the ground in glasgow arthur from edinburgh about an hour away
16:23you know that he fought rocky juarez
16:31in the 99 world championships in houston and maybe that's why rocky got the decision i know it was a
16:38very close decision close five to three decision to rocky who went on to win the gold in that tournament
16:42of course the olympic silver medal
16:47malinga takes a look over to his corner
16:50fortunately arthur wasn't firing a punch at the top
16:55malinga did a good job this second round landing right hands he's fighting at the distance he wants
17:00to fight and author's having trouble getting close
17:05coming forward
17:09to the surprise of many here
17:10there's that left hook to the body by author the fans want to see more well you can see what's
17:21happening malinga's having a lot of offensive success as a result he's right there to be
17:25hit and author's landing heavy as well now malinga landing the right uppercut on the inside
17:33and the aggressor here in round two
17:39anytime he even comes close you'll hear the crowd react
17:45there's a good right hand by arthur on the head
17:48that's that malinga's head back malinga shoots an overhand right and he scored with that one
17:57and not only game but showing some offense there's another right hand over the top that connected
18:14by malinga now back comes arthur but not a sustained attack
18:26malinga just walking into a left jab another jab by arthur follows it up with a right but a glancing blow
18:32low
18:39also with a heavy right hand of the jaw
18:48developing into a better fight
18:51okay you're moving in every one other thing right
18:53just check back a little bit
18:58big punches you're throwing nice straight punches
19:02right but make sure you're moving left and left
19:06left and left
19:07he's a suckling in there i know i think
19:09i know he can hit you at 81 you can hit him from round two which was a big one for malinga
19:13we said arthur can get sloppy when he's on the attack malinga wide left hook and arthur was there
19:18because he didn't move his head at all didn't bend and he looked discouraged there you could see
19:23he sort of made a face of grimace but arthur did come back malinga got aggressive and that gave
19:27arthur the opportunity you see malinga leaning in right there when he leaned in arthur banged
19:32him with the right hand and malinga later in the round around i gave malinga
19:37count the right hook right hand again arthur getting counted when he's over aggressive punching
19:42from too far away good round for malinga who started his career with a bang mostly against
19:48limited opposition going nine oh and one out of the gate
19:52arthur scoring with the right hand there malinga had several first round knockouts
19:58but a different story with the quality of competition improved he's four three and one in his last
20:02eight and all three losses by technical knockout he's 13 three and two with 11 knockouts malinga in the
20:08black with the gold trim arthur the hometown favorite 14 and 0 with 12 knockouts and the white with the gold
20:16piping once again it's malinga the one who is on the attack well we haven't seen that signature punch
20:25of arthur the left hook to the body largely because malinga has been effective with the right and arthur
20:30hasn't been close enough to throw it
20:38seems arthur has to relax a little bit maybe he's a little over aggressive and tight and as a result
20:43when they both punch malinga faster perhaps fighting in front of the hometown crowd has something to do
20:48with that it's a big card with the wbo featherweight championship stable mate scott harrison the headliner
20:56perhaps there are some butterflies and he's trying to work them out we're in round three
21:06you got jab ellen you got probably coming in a lot looser feeling what does he have to lose
21:12right hand scoring by arthur
21:16arthur now setting up the right hand with the jab it's going to the left uppercut to the chin
21:21arthur's never been down pro or amateur malinga's been down at least a couple of times
21:34arthur has knockouts
21:37in three rounds or less eight of his 12 ko's for malinga all 11 of his ko's in three rounds or less
21:43and we're in round three
21:54under a minute remaining of the third scheduled for 12 for a fringe title at 130.
22:01right hand there across the cheek a nice right cross by arthur
22:05and we're still waiting for that signature left hook to the body as steve pointed out
22:09he's landed it once or twice this round but a left hook to the body especially in a long fight
22:13it's the kind of punch that if you don't land it often it doesn't have as much of an effect it
22:18takes a cumulative effect and he was really talking it up in the fighter meeting with him yesterday
22:23now he watched tapes endlessly of julio cesar chalmers
22:28you're the master of that point
22:40as we head for the bell in round three
22:44well let's send it over to a pair of distinguished looking gentlemen's colin hart
22:50with ken buchanan
22:51right thanks thanks steve i'm with ken buchanan scotland's former world lightweight champion
23:02how do you think arthur's going in this fight so far it is a hard we fight for him like you know
23:07but um he's thrown a lot of punches alec like you know but a lot of them he's dropping short with
23:11them like you know i don't know whether he's just being very wary of the guy or not because he's probably
23:16felt he's got a couple of his punches and he's maybe had a punch in what they made him out to be
23:21but um i'd like to see alex thrown a wee bit if he's going to show a punch make sure the bloody
23:25thing lands you know right now you've known alex for a long time how old were you when you first
23:30know him he must have been about 10 years old when i first met him like and you still you advise him
23:34from time to time don't you oh we talk on the phone we bled her away i go to the gym and that like
23:38you think you'll win a world title i think so yeah yeah definitely thanks very much back to steve
23:44all right colin thank you very much yes they have compared alex author to a latter day
23:49ken buchanan who was perhaps more popular in the united states than in scotland when he fought in
23:54fact on one particular fight card at madison square garden he had top billing over muhammad ali
24:02ken buchanan one of the all-time greats and buchanan didn't get hit he was a master boxer he didn't get
24:08hit like authors getting hit i'll tell you that yeah author's defense very questionable here in the early
24:13stages of his career is only his 15th pro fight and they may be a little premature as you mentioned
24:19earlier in forecasting a world championship he says he's in no hurry but he's certainly not deserving of
24:27being number six in the wbo rankings he just hasn't fought enough high caliber competition to earn that
24:34and you can see he's having his problems here with a nondescript opponent patrick malinga
24:39just seems malinga's in rhythm you know his crunches are flowing
24:46not the case with arthur he's reaching back his right hand has been effective but they've been
24:51very very precious few left hooks
24:59also as mentioned malinga very loose
25:02perhaps also because he only had a couple of weeks to prepare sometimes that works in your favor yes
25:07he didn't have time to get uh he's fearful i guess nervous right
25:10now when they were in close like that and they were only in close for a few seconds arthur has to
25:18take advantage that's when he has to muscle his man and get that left hook going it was a good one
25:25arthur the british commonwealth 130 pound champion the british 130 pound champion
25:34in his first british title defense back in december he was not
25:38particularly in top form in a six-round tko over a very durable and brave fighter named carl greaves
25:46arthur a sloppy at times and easy to hit but also poised and methodical
25:52his mouth was bloodied in the third but arthur staggered greaves in the fourth and dominated most
25:57of the bout rocking greaves with a series of punches in the sixth before it was stopped
26:02let's see if things pick up for arthur here
26:07come back with the hook
26:1430 seconds remaining in the fourth it's scheduled for 12.
26:23good countering right hand by malinga
26:25he's got answers he does steven arthur just doesn't move his head
26:29something that's really common among the british the better british prospects a lot of them just
26:35don't have the head movement american fighters have
26:44that was one of the great things about mike tyson early in his career the head movement which of
26:48course has diminished with time
27:01alex arthur where is the left hook that's his signature punch
27:13and that was about as flush he led with the punch he didn't jab and then hook maybe that's why it
27:20landed because he hasn't been featuring that malinga wasn't you ready for it later in the round
27:25arthur stepping straight back gets the receipt the right hand from malinga again no head movement
27:40in the front
27:48jabalani the father and trainer of uh patrick malinga a former lightweight
27:54fighter himself and the pros and what a family my goodness patrick's boxing brothers peter former
28:00south african national champion samuel a fighter vusi a south forges 21 according to patrick the best
28:06of the malinga brothers and the cousin and most famous of the malingers tulani sugar boy former wbc
28:12super middleweight champ who beat an aging nigel ben in england in 96 we were here to broadcast that
28:20fight on showtime championship boxing you and sugar boy have remained very close very close friends in
28:25in fact after that fight when ben lost he got down on one knee and proposed to uh his future wife
28:35round five scheduled for 12
28:39it's a long fight steven i think arthur knows that and he feels that he can just continually pressure malinga
28:46he'll be okay last round there were a few seconds there where arthur actually went into boxing mode
28:50moved backward i don't think that's a very good idea he's got a pressure malinga get close so he can
28:56land the hook and i think uh peter harrison in the corner would agree with you because as mentioned earlier
29:03arthur believes by nature he's a boxer but they teach aggression at the peter harrison gym and they want to see
29:10more of that from alex arthur well he's trying to mix it up here is arthur in the white trunks
29:22oh a big right hand over the top to the jaw of arthur by malinga that got his attention
29:30and poking right through the gloves by arthur but not much behind it
29:42a lot of course
29:53melinga seems to be uh taking most of these punches by arthur he's got malinga backed up at the turn
29:59but it's malinga who seems content to be there didn't seem to bother him yeah he punched right away
30:06discouraged Arthur and Arthur stepped back I don't understand that did author
30:12exhibit more power in his punches the last time you saw him of course it was
30:16against a different opponents yeah that opponent he just pounded on for about
30:20five rounds till it was stopped in this fight the only punches he's landing in
30:24those straight rights and he hasn't hasn't hurt Malinga yet at all not a bad
30:31idea by Arthur right they're jabbing to the body a little bit they let fly with
30:35a left uppercut to the jaw of Malinga there's a left up upstairs by Arthur
30:41that that sent the South African reeling a bit
30:47right
30:54hey
30:57don't care enough okay okay don't get no way don't start showing up too much I know
31:02that's a nice punch in there and he's cocky this is why I thought that's all right
31:08that's all I'm tired
31:11yeah I think I'm out all fight long Malinga has been successful with right hand if you
31:16want to see why just take a look here Alex Arthur's hands both hands were down
31:20and if he's not going to move his head and he's not going to block a punch he's
31:24going to get hit flush and now here you see later in in round five Malinga against
31:30the ropes but he's the one punching Arthur doesn't take advantage and what
31:33happens Arthur throws right hand steps are full two steps back you wonder why
31:38obviously a very forgiving crowd here in Glasgow Scotland cheering on the the Edinburgh native
31:53and the white trunks Alex Arthur but I'm sure they like us waiting for him to unleash a few bombs
32:03nice left jab but he didn't follow it up with anything it's one and done
32:10very systematic and methodical Arthur I'm just not sure what he has in mind here
32:21well one thing's for sure he is fighting his opponent's fight because all Malinga really offers
32:28is a one-two Malinga has no left hook to speak of
32:31he punched so hard he fell off balance and hit nothing but air
32:38this is the Scottish equivalent of the champ air bowl
32:45all the point you got into his opponent a career he lives
32:46vetoing the enfermer
32:50another one at one
32:52point one at one the center
32:53against the band
32:54points
32:55the player
32:56with knot
32:58this is fair
32:59there's no BS
33:00very.
33:02the player
33:02guns
33:04and finally
33:07is
33:09L
33:09it's
33:12a massive
33:13man
33:14wide
33:15and he's got a long way to go a minute 20 in round six and what punch did it start with
33:31steve a left hook to the head first solid punch he's landed with the left hand
33:35as we approach a minute remaining this could be a long minute from a lingo if he makes it
33:49oh upstairs and that's it referee paul thomas says that's enough it's over in round six
33:55well i guess that's what that looks like
34:05he was just waiting for the opening steve boy uh i guess he got tired of listening to us
34:17criticize him and for not throwing the left hand one left hook to the head that's all it took
34:22malinga's legs turned to rubber and the fight was basically over at that point
34:26he got stunned initially at the 112 mark of round six
34:31and then it was just a matter of time and now for the fourth time in his four losses malinga loses by
34:40technical knockout
34:42alex arthur victorious for the 15th time and he wins a vacant fringe title
34:49called the wba international 130 pound belt
34:53even though he won the fight and very convincingly in round six were you a little surprised at the
34:58length of the fight steve farhut yes i was i really thought this was three or four maximum
35:04the good news for arthur he stayed patient things weren't working out that well early he was getting
35:08hit by a lot of straight right hands but he stayed patient and when he did land the big shot at least it
35:13had the desired effect so we know his rep as a puncher is legitimate
35:20so he's able to do it here in his own backyard of scotland
35:25and this is where it all started the one left hook by alex arthur to the head
35:33there was a counter punch because malinga extended that right hand arthur almost suckered him in there
35:38arthur was near the ropes and you could see malinga the wide stance and he's he's done at this point
35:43it's a question of how many punches arthur can land
35:49yeah back to the ropes arthur it's like as if he suckered him and then boom he would he had to be
35:53looking for that punch it was it was beautifully set up
35:59yeah he was on unsteady legs from that point on and at this point malinga
36:04was grabbing desperately didn't want any more and the referee did malinga a favor
36:10arthur remains undefeated going to 15 and 0 with 13 knockouts set for the official time from our
36:17ring announcer
36:19mr jimmy lennon jr ladies and gentlemen we have the time of two minutes three seconds in round number six
36:25a referee in charge paul thomas stops the contest the winner by way of technical knockout
36:32still undefeated and now the new wba international super featherweight champion amazing alex arthur
36:46so alex arthur being steered on by the hometown fans being talked about here in stotland as a future
36:52world champion but needs to step up the quality of opposition at this point don't you think yeah this
36:57fight was good in it he fought a guy who he should have gotten rid of maybe a little earlier but he
37:02got six rounds of work in the only two times in his career alex arthur's gone the distance were four
37:06round fights so forget that wbo number six stuff that's nonsense he's a prospect and he needs some
37:12good ten round opposition before we even talk about him fighting a contender so alex arthur posing for
