It is the goal of this channel to present all music of the early days of recording. To that end, a fine example of 1920s early microphone technology used to record this light classical music is presented. Victor first used the new microphone technology only 7 months before Nell Gwyn was recorded.
Pastoral Dance #2, The Merrymaker's Dance #3, from the comic operetta Nell Gwyn is played by the St Louis Symphony under the direction of Rudolph Ganz. The music was recorded electronically December 5, 1925 and was one of the first of the new electronic recordings being introduced by the Victor Talking Machine co. of Camden, New Jersey. The music had been written by Sir Edward German for Anthony Hope's play English Nell which became better known as Nell Gwyn. Sir Edward became the director of the Globe Theatre in London in 1888 and was the successor to Arthur Sullivan as England's foremost composer of comic opera. Sir Edward completed his work on English Nell in 1900.
Thanks to Mike W. of the Gustav Groos Estate of San Antonio, Texas for lending to me a large number of 78s from Mr Groos' 1911-1930 collection to be transcribed and shared on public media.
