Welcome one and all to another exciting Tech Connect video, brought to you by Vision Forward. Today we are bringing you a little more about the Meta Glasses, this time we are demonstrating how to use apps like WhatsApp to make video calls either using your phone's camera or the Meta Glasses themselves.
Previously we have covered how to use the Be My Eyes app to get assistance from volunteers. This really is a great service and their volunteers are typically very kind and professional. However, what if you don't want a stranger's help? What if you have a question about something personal or financial in nature and you'd rather not share it with a random person? No problem! Meta Glasses makes it easy to start a video call with someone in your contacts, and you can even switch between the phone camera itself and the Meta Glasses perspective depending on your needs.
0:00 Start
2:45 Meta View Settings and Communications, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, etc
5:00 Making a video call using your Meta Glasses and WhatsApp
7:55 Wrap Up Review
9:45 Upcoming Livestreams, Relevant Video Topics, LMS and Webinars for ACVREP Credits!
If you have any additional questions about the Meta Glasses, or wearables generally, please add those down in the comment section and we will endeavor to help!
Vision Forward's Tech Connect continues to bring you the information you need to make the most out of your devices. Our experts know there are many factors to consider, so if you have any follow up questions please post them in the comments and we will help you find the assistive tech that's best for you.

00:00Alright, let's do the cold open in unison. You ready? Mm-hmm. Three, two, one.
00:04Hi. Hello.
00:14Hello and welcome back to another exciting episode of Tech Connect.
00:18It's been a whole two weeks since the last episode and I know people, Corey, are
00:22chanting at the bit to find out some more exciting and accessible information about assistive technology.
00:27If you look down in our comments, there's at least 50 comments in every video that says,
00:32we miss you. Has it been two weeks? We want more videos.
00:37This may or may not be a hallucination of Corey's, but either way, we're going to assume it's true.
00:41So, we are back with another exciting episode, this time covering, Corey, the Meta Glasses.
00:46Yes, I know we've done a couple of videos before, Corey. What have we done before with the Metas?
00:50Well, so far, our most recent was using Be My Eyes with Meta Glasses.
00:56And then we've also had a more general, what are the Meta Glasses?
00:59I definitely recommend checking out both of them.
01:02Yes, you can check out the cards that Jonathan is going to put in the top right,
01:06or you could go down into the fish tank and have a swim around and you should find them down there as well.
01:10Oh, wonderful. Maybe the little chocolate box, little Valentine's?
01:14In the chocolate box. Well, it's past Valentine's by the time this video goes up, I'm afraid.
01:17It is never past time for chocolate.
01:19That is very true. That is very true.
01:22But today's Meta video, we are looking at some other features that we haven't covered yet, Corey.
01:27Those would be making video calls using WhatsApp and or Facebook Messenger.
01:33Two great ways to make video calls to people that you know and love.
01:37Yes, we've done, as we said, we have a video on using Be My Eyes.
01:40Those that are familiar with Be My Eyes, it's a visual volunteer service.
01:44Connect with a volunteer.
01:47They can see through your phone or your Meta Glasses and can help you.
01:51And that's great. It works great.
01:53Volunteers have always been good, but there might be times when you want to look at something sensitive
01:59or maybe your friends or family just know you better,
02:03know your preferences, and it makes more sense for you to connect with a friend or family.
02:08And so that's what we want to show today, how to use WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger to connect with your old buddy, your old pal.
02:17Yes, exactly. So we're going to do that.
02:19Or rather, Corey is going to do that because I'm getting out of here.
02:22I've got a flight to catch. I'm going to France. It's finally time for me to visit the Eiffel Tower.
02:27Corey, did you bring your France pants?
02:31I'm going to say yes, but I don't know what that means, but I'm going to say yes.
02:34I've got my France pants on. I'm ready to go. So Corey, take it over if you will.
02:38And if you need anything, just give me a call. Safe travels.
02:40Thanks, sir. See you later. See ya.
02:46All right. So first off, before we can do a demo,
02:49we want to talk about how to get this enabled.
02:52So there are some requirements, some things you're going to need.
02:55Obviously, you need meta glasses and you need a smartphone, either your iPhone or an Android device.
03:01Once you've got your glasses paired to the MetaView app,
03:05we're going to head into the MetaView app and take a look at where we can make these connections.
03:12So again, as we mentioned in the intro, we will be focusing primarily on WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
03:19One quick note before we dive in, I recommend downloading WhatsApp,
03:25getting that set up and logged in. Same with Facebook Messenger.
03:29If you don't already have those apps on your phone, go ahead and do it.
03:33It's going to make life a lot easier when you go into that MetaView app to enable them and get that connection going.
03:39All right. So we're going to go ahead in the MetaView app here.
03:42We'll touch settings in the bottom right corner.
03:48There we go. In the settings now, we're going to look for communications.
03:56There we go. Double tap.
04:02Now within this screen here, we've got a number of different apps that we can connect,
04:08including an actual connection to your phone itself.
04:12We also have WhatsApp, and you can see mine's connected already.
04:21That's our Facebook Messenger. And last, we can do Instagram.
04:30Whichever one you want to connect, go ahead and tap that.
04:33So if you're going to do WhatsApp, you'll tap WhatsApp.
04:36And then just follow the prompts through the continue button,
04:39and that will go ahead and connect your WhatsApp to your MetaView and your MetaGlasses.
04:46You can then come back to communication here and follow the same steps for whichever other services you'd like to connect,
04:55if that's Messenger or Instagram. Once you've got those all done, then we're ready to actually make a video call.
05:03This is perfect timing because I'm hoping you guys can keep a secret,
05:08but I was going through my desk today and I came across this piece of paper and I actually realized this is a power bill to our studio.
05:17It was given to me to pay and I may have forgotten about it, but I don't know how old it is.
05:24So we're actually going to use our new, not our new,
05:27but we're going to use our MetaGlasses and call Luke on WhatsApp and see if we can figure out when the due date is.
05:33So we're going to get our glasses out here.
05:42We've got them connected automatically as soon as we put them on. To initiate the WhatsApp call,
05:47we're going to do it from the actual WhatsApp app.
05:50So I've got that open. I've got Luke chosen and I'm going to do the start video call.
05:58I'm going to hear it ringing through my glasses.
06:03That sounds like I'm getting a call on WhatsApp. Let's have a look. Oh, Corey on a vacation.
06:07I don't believe this. Let me answer anyway. Hey, Corey, how you doing?
06:11Well, hello, Luke. How is your little vacation to France?
06:15Yeah, yeah. Having a nice vacation. Thanks.
06:16So here at the Eiffel Tower, not quite as cool as I thought it was going to be,
06:19but, you know, still having a nice time nonetheless.
06:22Oh, I feel bad about that, too.
06:25How are your France pants holding up? The France pants?
06:30Yeah, stitching is still looking good. Yeah, I'm still holding up.
06:33All right, that is very good. So I'm going to currently,
06:38this call is going through the camera on my device,
06:43but I'm actually going to reach up to the glasses on the right temple.
06:46There's a physical button. If I hit this twice,
06:49it's going to switch the camera view over to my Metaglasses.
06:55Now our glasses camera is active. Luke, we were all joking,
06:59but unfortunately I came across this power bill
07:04that I was given a long time ago for the studio
07:07and I may or may not have forgotten to pay for it.
07:10Can you tell me when is this due? How much trouble am I in?
07:16Okay. Well, let me take a look. Move your head a little bit to the right here
07:20just so I can see the page. Oh, okay. Do you want the good news or the bad news?
07:24Well, I am a lights a hundred percent kind of guy.
07:27So give me the good news first. All right.
07:30Well, the good news is the lights are still at a hundred percent right now.
07:33Bad news is probably not for long because this bill is way overdue.
07:38Hopefully we've got enough time. I better take care of this before we lose power.
07:47Aw, darn. Kaui, why did it go all dark?
07:54All right. So we have paid our bill. Luke, I no longer need this bill anymore.
07:58Wow. We've paid it and it's been taken care of.
08:01That's how I file things away. I crush them up and toss them away.
08:05Okay. I mean, once you paid it, you don't really need to keep it. Am I right?
08:08Yeah, I'm not sure that that was the power bill anymore.
08:12So yeah, I mean, that was very helpful, wasn't it, Kaui?
08:15You got to call me while I was on vacation. Thanks for disturbing my peace and quiet.
08:18I'm glad you're back. Yeah, we can't do TechConnect without you.
08:22You are the wind beneath my wings. I can't do these videos without you.
08:26Why is this whole place fall apart? I didn't pay a power bill.
08:30Yes. Yeah. Yes. You complete me. Yes.
08:33However, if you were on vacation, I might not notice.
08:38I was when I was in Disney. Everything seemed to go just fine and dandy.
08:42What happened when you're in Disney? Nothing. You did a video.
08:45Everything went great. We've done a few things on Metaglasses.
08:49They are great. As we mentioned at the top of the video, check out some of our other videos,
08:55especially the Be My Eyes. But today we were saying,
08:58what about if you didn't want to use Be My Eyes?
09:00What about if you had a bill that you were embarrassed about
09:04and you didn't want anyone to know except your best mate?
09:08That's what we showed today. Yeah, but my friend Scott wasn't available.
09:12So I called Luke and he told me what the bill is.
09:16So put us down and put it down in the old bread basket there.
09:19If you have a bill that you're embarrassed about
09:22and don't want anybody to see and what the bill is for.
09:25Yeah, and then Luke will give you his contact information
09:29and he'll be happy to tell you how late your bill is. Indeed.
09:33So there we go. I mean pretty short video call.
09:35Pretty straightforward. If you got the Metaglasses,
09:38why not get them hooked up to WhatsApp, get them hooked up to Facebook Messenger
09:41and start making video calls to the extreme.
09:44Let us know in the comments if you have got the Metaglasses
09:47and if so, what you think of them, how you've been getting on with them
09:49and what you are doing with them. And also put down in the comments there,
09:53Corey, if Corey is the wind underneath your wings.
09:57I'd be happy to be the wind under anybody's wings.
10:00We've got a number of things going on here with TechConnect.
10:04First of all, if you like the content, subscribe.
10:07It really does help out the channel. Hit that like button.
10:09Do the old ringy dingy bell and all those other stuff that every YouTube creator says,
10:15but it actually does make a huge difference in getting our videos out to more people.
10:19So we appreciate that. We do. And if you want to see more content,
10:23we have a few different avenues. We do have a podcast.
10:26It is a audio version of our live show,
10:29which by the way, Corey, is shown every two weeks on a Thursday at 11 a.m.
10:33Central. If you're watching this video on the release day,
10:36our next live video will be one week after this.
10:38All you have to do is go to YouTube.com forward slash at Vision Forward TechConnect
10:43and you can check us out live as long as you're there at the right time.
10:46As Corey said in the last video that we made,
10:48if you just stay on the video then, you know, for a week, then it should appear.
10:53I mean, watch other videos while you're waiting for that week.
10:55Got to help the algorithm as well. I like it.
10:58I like it. Don't go to any other YouTube channels.
11:01Nope. I have a short list of people you definitely don't want to go see.
11:05No, if you want to see what the short list is,
11:07then put it in the comments and Corey will let you know.
11:09I'll let you know privately. We have a lot of little secrets today.
11:13We do also have a online learning management system.
11:18If you want free on-demand ACVREP credits
11:21or you just want some great webinars, head over to TechConnect.vision-forward.org
11:27TechConnect.vision-forward.org
11:30and you will be able to sign up for a free account
11:33and have a lot of great information.
11:35We've got a new one on AI.
11:38We've got a new one coming out on the OrCam Read
11:42and then we also have one on low vision magnification,
11:47when you should use what type of magnification,
11:51pros and cons, those kind of things.
11:52Indeed. Check them all out.
11:54So with that being said, Corey, it's time to go pay some more bills.
11:56So let's get out of here. All right, give me your wallet.
