Tunisia: Atmosphere tense during Amina Tyler’s trial
Al Qarra - Tensions were high during the trial for Tunisian feminist Amina Tyler. At the courthouse in Kairouan, the 18-year-old was sentenced on Thursday to pay 300 dinars, that’s 150 euros, for carrying pepper spray. An illegal act under a law dating back to the 19th century.
Tyler is not yet out of the woods. The judges are continuing to hold her for another charge. She is charged with breaching public decency and desecrating a cemetery. The offenses are punishable by six months to two years in prison.
