Al Qarra - Police regained control of the Taksim Square in central Istanbul, occupied for several days by protesters. The police used tear gas and water cannons but did not enter Gezi Park.
Protesters responded with Molotov cocktails and stone spears.
The police had left Taksim Square June 1st in the wake of violent confrontations and accusations of brutality.
Faced with growing protests for the past two weeks, Prime Minister Erdogan has taken a tough line with protesters, many of whom are demanding his resignation.
On Monday night the prime minister agreed to meet with representatives of the protesters on Wednesday.
The anti-government unrest was sparked by a police crackdown on a local protest over an Istanbul park.
